New Tax Plan Could Jeopardize Small Business Owners' Privacy

The problem is, in many cases, small businesses use their owners' Social Security numbers as their taxpayer ID.

CDT called the proposal "disturbing" because it said it "would require credit card companies to turn over to the government large amounts of data about their merchants without any reason to believe that they have broken any laws."

"The Treasury Department has done little to justify why Congress should impose this substantial new burden on sole proprietors and other small businesses," CDT concluded.

The administration proposed a similar plan in last year's budget that would have required Internet "brokers" like Amazon and eBay to collect and report similar data, but the idea met opposition on Capitol Hill and was never included in any implementing legislation. more

Knowledge management - without it, ICT systems are pointless

In the hands of more than a few, knowledge is exponentially powerful, and it unlocks the true potential of business.

Opening the vault to the intellectual assets of a business falls into the domain of Knowledge Management (KM), a concept that has been around for more than a decade and is now being formalised as part of the business approach of numerous large organisations. In this country, KM is especially relevant.

Explains Mohammed Bhyat, project delivery leader at e.com institute, a business solutions provider: "SA is in the unenviable position where it has, and still is, losing a large amount of its institutional knowledge. Failing to identify and leverage that knowledge is severely hampering the efficiency and effectiveness of organisations in both the public and private sectors."

Nine out of ten SMEs lack viable disaster recovery plan, says survey

AROUND 90% of Welsh SMEs lack a viable plan to get their businesses up and running quickly if they are hit by disasters such as fire, flood and catastrophic IT failure, it has been estimated.

Cardiff-based Circle IT surveyed 50 organisations and found that although the majority had disaster recovery plans, most would be unable to cope adequately with a severe interruption to their operations.

The company says that the essential requirements for disaster recovery include the availability of alternative accommodation and equipment for staff, as well as off-site back-ups for replication of servers and key business systems. These should be a continuous data recording system that copies everything on a second-by-second basis throughout the day.

The company claims that even if companies have back-up systems in place, most would not be able to prevent a significant loss of data or system configurations that are vital to the running of businesses should their network servers be destroyed or fail due to a severe fault, virus, or sabotage. more
