Group 1's weathering a one-two

Second-quarter sales dropped 7 percent while its parts-and-service business grew 5 percent, the Houston-based company reported Tuesday.

Both the drop in sales and the rise in parts-and-service could be attributed in part to people trying to hold on to their vehicles longer, the company said.

Working in its favor, the nation's fourth-largest auto retailer is relatively well-positioned among dealer groups because of its heavy focus on in-demand Japanese brands, the company said.

"Wall Street is impressed with the job we did," said Pete DeLongchamps, Group 1 spokesman. "We executed the fundamentals."

The company's stock rose $2.63 on Tuesday to close at $19.85 a share, up 15 percent.

DeLongchamps highlighted the company's strengths: sales of parts and service, expense control, used-car inventory control and its finance and insurance business. more

The Connecticut Water Company Signs Agreement to Purchase

EAC is a regulated water utility company that provides water service to approximately 750 customers, or approximately 2,300 people in the town of Ellington, Connecticut. Under the terms of the agreement, Connecticut Water will purchase all issued and outstanding shares of EAC for $1,495,000.

Connecticut Water currently serves more than 36,000 customers in Ellington and its surrounding towns in northern Connecticut and its water system is in close proximity to that of EAC. Eric W. Thornburg, President and CEO of Connecticut Water, says this transaction will benefit the customers of EAC and CWC alike. He stated, "By interconnecting the EAC and CWC water systems, we can avoid significant capital expenditures for both companies that in the long-term will keep rates lower for CWC and EAC customers than if EAC had remained an independent company. more

Letter: 'Local' businesses should support local economy

As a longtime resident of Vero Beach, I have seen residents and businesses supporting the local economy almost constantly. But in recent years, as big businesses take over smaller ones, “Supporting Your Local Business" has gone out the window.

On a recent visit to a new bank on State Road 60, I noticed an out-of-county company performing work on the interior of the building. Why can't we support our community?

This bank wants all its depositors to stay, yet from what I have seen almost everything it has done has been accomplished by out-of-town companies. How can this bank's customers support it when the institution doesn't support its depositors?

A lot of other companies are doing the same thing. The new shopping center on Route 60 and 58th Avenue was built by an out-of-town company, as was just about all other new construction along that corridor. more

Minimum Wage Increase May Affect Small Businesses in West Texas

So if local businesses want to compete in the job market they have to put up more cash to get the sought after employees.

"Well, it really hasn't had that much impact on us, because we have been paying starting employees at more that minimum wage for quite a while now," Russell Johnson, Manager for La Casa Verde Nursery, said.

La Casa Verde Nursery has been paying more than minimum wage to make sure they keep their employees. At any time, they have anywhere from 10 to 15 employees on the job.

"We do want to attract quality employees and we do realize our employees do have to make a living and they have families to feed and their expenses, whether it's gasoline or groceries have gone up, so we have to pay more than minimum wage and have for quite a while," Johnson said. more
