New River Technical and Community College is trying to make sure their students are well prepared for the business world. They held a forum today with area businesses and colleges to discuss what type of curriculum to include in a new program they're starting. The Mechatronics Program will be held at a new facility on Stafford Drive in Princeton. Skills that were considered included technical skills, management and leadership.

Three new Beaumont businesses to open soon

Three new Beaumont retail businesses are set to open in the coming months. All three businesses will be located at the 2nd Street Marketplace, Beaumont.Beaumont City Manager Alan Kapanicas announced at the Tuesday night city council meeting that Best Buy will open in April. He also stated that Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Pet Co. will open in May.Best Buy is scheduled to open April 25, according to Developer Gary Hanshaw of Hanshaw Properties. The company has already joined the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, Director of Marketing Autumn Young said.General Contractor Richard H. Borden Engineering and Construction, Inc. spokesman Tom Rowe said that Bed, Bath, and Beyond is scheduled to open May 5 and Pet Co on May26.Staples office supply is set for a June 15 grand opening.The Ross clothing store is looking to open up in early July, Rowe said. more

A glum outlook from Japanese firms

Japanese companies have grown pessimistic about business conditions, according to a government survey released Monday, fueling fears that the Japanese economy may follow the United States into a recession.

The business survey index of sentiment at large manufacturers slumped to minus 12.9 for January-March from plus 5.2 in October-December in a joint survey by the Ministry of Finance and the Economic and Social Research Institute, an arm of the Cabinet Office.

The index readings for January-March were the lowest in all categories since the data began in April-June 2004.

The survey reinforced expectations that the Bank of Japan's closely watched tankan survey, due out April 1, would show a broad slide in the business mood and a lackluster capital spending plan. more
