Former Naples chamber leader, banker laid to rest in Oregon

Edward J. Oates Jr., who championed Naples and dedicated his life to working for its people, businesses and causes, died this week in Forest Grove, Ore., and was buried with full military honors.

He was 77.

“He was Mr. Naples — he loved his community and his family," said Sharon Bryson, Oates' daughter.

During the 44 years that Oates lived in Naples, he worked at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, several banks including First National Bank of Naples and for the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce as president and executive director.

But that was just the beginning.

According to the obituary written by his family, Oates served on 89 civic and community organizations and boards, including the David Lawrence Center, the Fine Arts Society, the Collier County and State of Florida Heart Associations, the Humane Society, Naples Kiwanis Club and Naples March of Dimes, as well as city and county boards. more

Clarke, Minghella were show-business giants

Talented show business people die every week, but there were two major losses this week.

Science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke died in Sri Lanka, while filmmaker Anthony Minghella died from surgery complications in his native England.

Clarke, who was 90, wrote the novella "The Monolith," which served as the inspiration for the 1968 science-fiction film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

That was one of the films that made a strong impression on me when I was a youngster.

Minghella was 54, and while I didn't necessarily like all of his films, they were never uninteresting. While I was less enthralled than some with his multiple Oscar-winning, 1996 adaptation of "The English Patient," I did love his 1999 adaptation of "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

And he was also one of those interviews I'll never forget. more

Open Question: Will me being an Asian Indian really hold me back in life?

Okay so currently I live in the deep south (a place with a reputation of being close minded and racist). I will be getting out of here soon but despite being called tons of racial slurs I have managed to make those same people like me. The same people who stomped on me and called me names are now my good friends. People tell me that I don't sound "Indian" and usually they point out that I sound more White, I always get mixed up with Hispanic and Middle Eastern in most cases. When I watch TV, I see that usually White guys (not to be racially offensive) get to have the most fun in life like walking off with a pretty lady from a different country, working with a wild animal like a tiger, getting into the top colleges like Harvard and Yale, being the Quarterback of an American football team and everything. Usually people and the media portray us Asians as being lame. Will being an Asian Indian hold me back in life? Will not get to do the other things and enjoy life to the fullest like other races get to enjoy it? Soon I will be going up North (I plan on spending my life out of the deep south, I hate living here, too boring and still heavily conservative). Some have told me it will limit what I do. Hello and welcome to EYAF V2 Onslaught! *Huge pyro to open off the show* *Theme song "Light It Up" by Rev Theory plays through the arena* The owner of EYAF V2 comes out to the ring, he welcomes everyone to the return of one of the best feds ever created! He says that tonight all signed superstars shall be used and then after the show they will be split into the main roster and the development roster. He says that our first ppv will be "War-Time" four weeks from now. He then introduces the competitors of the first match, which will be competed under Extreme Rules and will be for the X-Treme Title. Match 1- Extreme Rules Match - X-Treme Championship Prasdana vs Amazing X Result: Amazing X picks up the victory when he hits a flying corkscrew over the top rope and onto Prasdana who is on the arena floor. He then sets up a table against the security barrier and then hits a hurricanerana and sends Prasdana straight into the table. He drags Prasdana back into the ring and covers him for the three count. New X-Treme Champion=Amazing X Amazing X is now immune from the draft and shall be placed on the Onslaught roster. The GM of Onslaught comes down to the ring and adresses the issue of what if competitors tonight win a championship but then they are drafted to the developmental brand? He says that if a competitor wins a title tonight, unless it is the tag titles because they can be defended on both brands, that superstar automatically earns the right to remain on Onslaught and will not be a party of the draft. *Member of the original EYAF, Twister, is seen backstage. He says that it is good to be back and he plans on reclaiming his throne here in EYAF by winning the world title. But then Dylan klein walks up to him and says that as long as he is around, Twister will not be wearing that world title.* Match 2 -Tag team match - Tag Team Titles The Jamesaw and Nigey McBonez vs Kawajai and Risky Business Result: Kawajai and Risky Business steal the victory when Nigey McBonez gets the tag while the ref is busy with Risky. When the ref sees Nigey in the ring he starts arguing to tell him to get out of the ring. Then behind the ref’s back Kawajai and Risky hit their double team finisher on Jamesaw and Risky gets the pin. New Tag Team champions= Kawajai and Risky Business Kawajai and Risky Business are not immune from the draft as the tag titles can be defended on both brands. *The Titan-Tron turns on and it shows a graphic for the developmental brand, which will be run by Blue voodoo King, it shows the logo for it and reveals the name of the show. The name of the developmental brand shall be FS Coloseum, Future Star Coloseum!* Match 3 - No Limits Championship - Ladder Match Mike Adams vs Blue Voodoo King vs Richard Kingston vs Jayjay Helterbrand Result: The match comes down to Mike Adams and Richard Kingston, they both climb the ladder brawling when they reach the top. Richard Kingston gets the upper hand when he smashes Mike Adams’ face into the top of the ladder. He then lifts his leg high and kicks Mike in the face, Mike then falls to the floor. Richard reaches to the belt and pulls it down. New No Limits Champion= Richard Kingston Richard Kingston is now immune from the draft and shall be placed on the Onslaught roster. Match 4 - Winner receives immunity from the draft Brick Brock vs Y2J Result: The match comes to an end when Y2J connects with his patented move the lionsault on Brick Brock, but Brick Brock tries to counter by putting his knees in the way of the lionsault. But this counter is countered by Y2J who grabs Brick Brock’s legs and locks in the Walls Of Jericho, this makes Brock tap out. Y2J is now immune from the draft and shall be placed on the Onslaught roster. *The GM of Onslaught comes out to the ring again and hypes the main event, which is up next!* Main Event - World Title Match - No DQ - No Count Out King Cliff vs The Twister vs Dylan Klein vs Shazam McAmazing Result: The Twister is just about to pick up the victory on King Cliff after he hits the Rock Bottom, but Shazam hits a legdrop from the top rope onto Twister who is making the cover. Shazam then grabs Twister and throws him out of the ring, but out of no where Dylan Klein runs up behind Shazam and hits the Skull Crushing Finale for the three count. New World Heavyweight Champion= Dylan Klein Dylan Klein is now immune from the draft and shall be placed on the Onslaught roster. After the match Dylan runs up the ramp holding the world title above his head. Twister stands up and stares down with Dylan before turning to Shazam, he starts to beat down on Shazam screaming at him saying he cost him the match. Eventually security run down to the ring and pulls Twister away from Shazam and took him backstage. more

Open Question: Why do so many people think I'm weird?

Okay, so I'm a guy in 8th grade. At my school, each grade is divided into primarily two "teams", each one having 4 teachers for each subject. For whatever reason, the students call them the "Advanced" and "Normal" (sometimes even "Stupid") teams, but that doesn't make any sense at all because we all basically learn the same thing at the same time, unless you're like in Algebra 1 or something instead of 8th Grade Math. Anyway, almost ALL of the "Normal" people call me a nerd, weirdo, stalker (I don't even know where they got this one from), and every other negative name under the sun. But they don't say these things directly, they just talk about me amongst themselves. Like when I pass people in the halls they don't whisper "loser" or anything like that, but I know for a fact that they talk about me behind their backs. When I talked to some of my friends in that team (which are few), they said the others think I'm weird because of the way I talk, act, walk, dress (which I'm like wtf because we have uniforms!), look. Some people say my last name is strange (in a bad way) too! One time during lunch I was talking to another friend about this and she was like "I don't know why so many people call you weird because you don't act weird and you don't do anything that's weird." She's one of those people that most people like and respect. Anyway, I'm basically a quiet person that minds his own business, and some people say I'm like really smart (which is probably why some call me a nerd). But even though I'm quiet, when I get into conversations I really TALK a lot. And of the people in my team, I hang out with basically every type of person and try to start a conversation with everyone at least once. What I don't understand is that even some people that I have NEVER talked to and don't even KNOW me also say I'm just plain weird. And if one of my friends step in and defend me by saying something like "Hey, I'm his friend! Don't talk about him like that!", the other people are like "Ewww, really?" Honestly, this whole situation is just frustrating and annoying.... Any suggestions to help me? And I'm getting the feeling that my really true friends, the ones who are brave enough to step in and defend me, would get the weird label too. And I really don't want that. Ohhh... middle school is crazy, ain't it? By the way, each "team" holds about 100 people. So yeah, like 90 people think I'm some kind of weirdo. I doubt standing up for myself is going to help. Some of those get into really, really lengthy conversations about why I'm weird. Some are just like "Yeah, I know him. He's such a weird nerd..." and don't go any further because it isn't interesting for them. And OH MY GOODNESS I didn't realize my "question" was sooooooo long! I'm sorry! I just wanted to be a "little" detailed and I guess I went overboard. Bless your soul if you read all of that...Guys, I actually DO hang out with the jocks and cheerleaders (i.e. popular ppl) ALOT. I hang out with them more than any other "group." Yes, I know I should diversify... Thanks, I got it. But I'm like getting really confused because it sounds like some of yall are saying they're the ones calling me weird... and they aren't. Other than that, great answers everyone! more

I usually write my job description and duties, responsibilities here is an example of 1 I done recently:- Duties involved receiving and validating business broadband contracts on a daily basis in the provisioning department. I achieved this by planning and organising my workload in a set manner ensuring that I met customer requirement date. Resolved Question: I suspect my husband is mentally ill. How do I get him and us help?

My husband has always been a bit...different. He doesn't like to socialize and is easily angered, and very verbally abusive once angered. We were young when we got together and I wrote his name-calling and insults off as being immaturity. It has been 8 years and things are only getting worse. Now with just the verbal abuse (which is a seperate issue I am trying to handle) but with other instabilities as well. He has become increasingly paranoid. It has gone from thinking everyone is staring at him, to everyone is talking about him, to everyone is plotting against him, and now a new person cannot even be introduced to him without him going on about how they mean to do him wrong somehow. Worse, he thinks people are spying on us, in our own home! He starts up these "fake" discussions with me to "throw them off our trail" (he invents things that didn't happen or will start talking about things that make no sense, like our friend so-and-so's business degree when this friend of ours is only a high-school graduate and works as a cashier). only I don't know when they're fake so I don't know to play along (and usually am confused) and he gets FURIOUS with me and starts yelling at me and going on about how the neighbors and people are listening and I ruined what he was trying to do. I don't know what to do about this and I am starting to feel really on edge myself. I can't bring myself to have these "fake" discussions but if I try to get him to stop he get so ANGRY at me. I have been unable to convince him people aren't eavsdropping on us. He remains certain they are and gets mad just when I say that because "they" with hear me say that. So I tell him that they should hear me say it cause if "they" are eavsdropping they are in the wrong and should know we know about it. But he doesn't see it that way. This comes and goes. Sometimes a week will go by and I wont hear anything about it. Then there will be a few days where he doesn't want us to do any talking in the kitchen cause the neighbors will hear, or he's sure someone is outside our window listening. This spills over into his work life too. He has a good job but is sure everyone on his team has it out for him. If his boss schedules a meeting that is not in the normal schedule he thinks he is getting fired. If a new employee is hired he thinks it is to replace him. If his boss has a meeting that he isnt invited to he thinks it is because they are talking about him. I feel like living with this day in and day out is wearing on MY mental health as well, it is so stressful. There is no convincing my husband to just relax, that things are okay, that no one has it out for us. I have brought up seeking a professional with him and he is agreeable up until the point of actually DOING it. He won't see a therapist. He doesn't want to take any drugs. Sometimes he can get mean and violent. He's never hit me but he's shoved me multiple times, thrown things at me, and he cusses me out and calls me all kinds of names and degrading things whenever I make him mad. He does this right in front of our toddler child. Recently our child has been standing right next to him screaming and hitting me when he sees his dad looming over me and yelling in my face (husband is six and a half feet tall and likes to loom and point when yelling). When I point out to husband how our child is acting when he yells my husband just says it's because our kid doesn't like how I tread him (my husband). I know that this is not truely the case but my husband seems convinced of it. I can't just leave. I think my husband would truely fall apart then. Plus I am a stay at home mom with no resources of my own. No car, no money, no family within 2,000 miles, I have no where to go. I've been to the local domestic abuse center and they said they would help but they don't actually help (I think they just wanted my info because it get's them more funding) I've contacted them multiple times but I've never heard from them. They told me they could get me counseling, public assistance and a place to live but they've never come through or even gone beyond the initial paperwork with me despite my multiple attempts at contact. And they seem to have high turnover and every time I call or meet with them its a new person who has no idea about anything we prevously talked about beyond my initial paperwork. I'm frusterated! I keep seeing questions like ' Bush's spending was O.K because of blah, blah, blah. But Obama's spending is bad..' And on the other side 'Bush and the repubs love big corporations, BTW Obama and the dems are correct in forcing us all to by insurance from the big corporations...' It seems that very few of you have any principles, you just back whatever your party does. If your a dem and you want to reign in big business, then you should support that in principle. And if your a repub and you want to reign in government spending then you should support THAT in principle. Don't make excuses for your 'side' when they do what you object to. This should be about your beliefs, not about your team. I honestly think some repubs would support Bush even if he did exactly the same things that Obama is doing. And likewise, the dems would criticize him for it. What is the difference between any of you, other than the name and emblem of your party? If your a Republican you should be a Republican because you believe in smaller government, cutting spending, cutting taxes, and keeping the government out of the peoples business as much as possible. Bush did very poorly by those standards. And if your a Dem., you should be a Dem because you believe regulating big business, keeping us out of war, and strengthening our civil liberties. Obama has done none of those things so far. Yet you both defend your 'guy' to the death, but neither has done much for what you are supposed to stand for. Voting Question: My parents don't believe in me what do i do?

So i play football and I'm not the biggest kid on the team or the best but I've always tried hard and work my ass off 4 everything that has happened in my football career. My parents have seen my play once freshman year and i was okay. It's been 2 years and I have gotten much better hell I play special team 4 varsity and have some gotten playing time on varsity this year. I recently got a invitation from 365 Sports to attend the Trans Pacific Australian Cup and to represent the United States in this tournament. I really want to go and play football for my country. My parents have never really been there for me and I don't think they support me in anything besides my academic career. They really don't care about me playing football and when i asked my dad if I could go to Australia he said no. I asked him why and he said that it's a scam and the are running a business so you won't get selected. He also said that they send this to everybody and it's the same thing like the spam thing where they call you and say that you've been selected for a free trip or something. I looked it up online and it looks legit. It's basically a once in a lifetime opportunity and it will also get me recognized by college coaches and possibly get me a scholarship to play football in college which I really want to do. He said that they just change the name of the person and send it to everybody. He said that he knows how these things work and its a scam. So what should I do? My sister, age 29 (and married) is having a baby in April (it's a ways, but she wants to have a list of names already). She likes older names that aren't used a lot and I like totally unique and original names. Possibly a good team for baby namin' business, but I'd like to hear your opinions on these names before I hand my list over to her (we're close and thought because I didn't get any part in naming my other two nieces), that I can help her with him/her.
