Why do we have the WNBA. From my understanding, the league can't even hold its own. It has to be subsidized by the NBA to cover its expenses. It is professional sports, not a charity. I don't think it is fair we live in a world where athletes make more in a year than most people make in a lifetime. As a business scholar I appreciate good business comes with good profits; however, in this case we are paying these women way more than they are worth. "NBA Cares" seems like a good idea, why don't they scratch women's ball and spend their money of something worth a damn, instead of just trying to open up a market for women that doesn't really exist in the name of "equality"Thanks Eddie. But despite their fan base, they are not covering cost. I understand that the highest paid star probably makes about the minimum of an NBA player. But you are missing my point about how they have to be subsidized just to play. Why should we pay them so much money when they are not earning the money? I don't care if we pay Peyton Manning 20 million a year, as long as he helps to bring in that income and indianapolis is still making a profit. moreOpen Question: Big Ethical Question?
Hey, There is a guy named Tom, he works as a van driver for deliveries for a juice company. I own a retail store in a shopping centre, that Tom frequently delivers to. He has come into my store and approached my staff for buying juice. I think he may be selling this juice out the back of the truck, and the company has no idea. I approached my staff and have come to the conclusion that he indeed is pocketing the money for himself, and the company has no idea of the losses they suffering. As a fellow entrepreneur i think it would be my "obligation" to tell this fellow business about this individual. However, from another perspective, this man is very poor, and maybe this is his way of providing for his family. I live in South Africa, and crime is high, if he loses his job there is no doubt that crime may be an option for him, thus putting innocent lives at risk. Should i tell the company? OR Should i close a blind eye? moreOpen Question: Looking for some attractive names for my online baby/kids store?

I met this really shy girl named Anna at the beginning of the semester. She is in one of my classes, and she is really really shy. She rarely talks to people in my class; she would just sit in her seat and minds her own business. On the second day of the spring semester, I moved over to sit next to her with my friend because we hate sitting in back where we couldn't hear anything my professor says. I started talking to her with some very simple lines. it took a while for her to kind of open up to me and we start to have some really good small conversations other than just hey, how was the test yesterday or did you know how to do this problem. Anyway, over times, I found her really smart, relatively mature (at least in some aspects, maybe boys is not one of them) and unassumingly pretty. I would sometimes talk to her on the way to her next class. I remember one time when I was walking out of the classroom, I looked back, she saw me and we had a very brief eye contact. She smiled and blushed (maybe she is just really shy, I don't know), and my face was sort of burning as well. So I kind of like her and I want to ask her out maybe not as a date first, but as a friendly hanging out the first time. My roommate is a member of the orchestra of our university. They are going to have a classic music concert on April 6th. He invited me and all of other roommates to come and cheer for him. I also remember Anna told me she likes classic music because she plays violin. So I want to use that opportunity to ask her out for a friendly hanging out (not a date yet). So that is what I have in my mind. I have no idea on how well it will work, or whether or not it will work at all. I just want to get to know her a bit better. If things don't work out, then HOPEFULLY, we can still remain friendly. Right now, I am a bit concerned about what would happen if she says no. I am not fearful of rejection because I’ve had it before. What if she starts to act weird around me? I would hate myself for that. Btw I was never in a real relationship before in high school. moreOpen Question: A challenge to anybody who enjoys genealogy and/or history!?
I want to find out more about my family's history, but I have no idea how to go about doing that! I'm researching my great-great-grandad whose name was John Connolly (later shortened to Conley). He and his family came from Ireland in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, and settled in Brockton, MA. I also know that my great-great-grandad had six children and eventually started a bakery on Main Street in Brockton, MA. According to my grandfather, John Connolly (later shortened to Conley) also bought a 13-room house after the bakery business took off! Any information you can find about my great-great-grandad would be so helpful! Public records, newspaper articles...anything! Thanks so much!! moreOpen Question: For anyone who rents a booth for cosmetology?
Hi, I was wondering what you think of my opportunity that has recently presented itself: I just got my license from school for cosmetology and I have had this opportunity to rent a booth in my local town. Renting a booth was clearly out of the idea, being as I don't have clientele built up at the moment. I know what you must be thinking: Why in the world rent a booth when you don't have clients? Well, what is keeping me considering and my husband agreeing with me, is that I didn't get much education in school. And, the booth rent is $25 a day, and i will only pay for 2 days a week. While i am building my clientele, I will get to come in and learn from the owner and her daughter all the different things about hair and makeup. I can rent out books or DVD's to my name to learn from the salon. This salon has been in business for 15 yrs and is very upscale: Haircuts are $70. Color is nearly $200.And, it seems like its always very busy. The owners said they have confidence in the fact that I can build my clientele quicker than I think and anything I don't know they will help me learn. They encouraged me to take time to figure out if this is really what I want to do, and if it is, I can gain education and build a business at the same time. But...Im just a little concerned! What if this doesnt work out?? Can you tell me what you think about this?? ***Are there any catches to this situation I might be missing????I suppose i forgot to mention that Id be working another part time job on the side, incase you were thinking "how will she earn income?" So there is a guy whom I recently reconnected with via Facebook. He contacted me on Valentine's Day, but he qualified it with "Happy Valentine's Day to my old __ friend" [__ = name of place we worked] So at first I just thought that he saw me as a friend, and I responded in kind. We sent a few e-mails back and forth, and my e-mails got progressively longer while his e-mails stayed short. He told me that he wanted to buy me a cup of coffee. (I accepted) He gave me his number and said to call him anytime I need. I didn't call for a week (a LOT going on) and during this time he was fairly active on my Facebook page, including a comment on one of my photos "wow". But he had my number too and he did not call me either. I had let him know that I had just gotten out of a relationship and was not ready for anything, and that a couple of other guys had been calling me every day and it was really annoying me and I told them that but they didn't listen to me, and I felt that it was disrespectful of where I am at. I actually really appreciated it that he left it up to me to call him. So up to this point I am thinking that he probably sees me as a friend. Then I get this crazy idea in my head to ask him if he wants to go to a family wedding with me, which is OUT OF TOWN, requires a 7-hour road trip (round trip there and back), no one he knows, in a small town where there is nothing to do, on a Friday night. He responded almost immediately and said that he would "love to" and that he was super excited about going!!! This is a very busy man who owns his own business and this is 11 hours of his time (travel time + lunch + the wedding) and this is the first time we have spent time together since we worked together years ago!!! I am really excited that he is coming with me too... I was being honest with him that I can't handle a relationship right now, but he is amazing and I would LOVE to explore the possibility of having one with him in the near future, when I have my s**t together (I need to get over my old relationship first, also I have to start school soon and it takes a lot of time and energy for me to start out right). Now I am very nervous and freaking out about him coming. I think it would help to solve my nerves if I could know what his intentions are. And I can't ask him (normally I could) because I myself am not ready for anything yet so I cannot clearly state my own intentions in return. Do you think that he sees me as just a friend, or possibly more? Thanks.Mike, I am sorry, your answer didn't get to my inbox until I had already deleted the first posting of this question, I thought I had zero answers at that time. I wanted to go back in and edit my question. Wish I could have read your answer!!! moreResolved Question: I can't tell if he sees me as more than a friend or not... objective opinions please!?

Thank you! moreOpen Question: Just found out I was sued, I was never notified?
Hello Okay I just checked my credit score, and saw my public records said Judgment. I recognized the name of the person who sued cause they where my landlord last year. I own a LLC company and I told my land Lord with ample time last year that I was moving out of his building. I owed him some rent and he said to catch up so it doesn't build up. I was served a eviction notice a week later and then I gave him majority of the past due rent. He told me he was going to contact the court and cancel the eviction. Well a couple weeks after this and multiple conversations with the land lord I go to lunch one day and when I get back the locks are changed, and there is a letter from the sheriff "Lock Out" do not enter the building. Rite away I called the landlord and he laughed and said you didn't show up to court, don't enter my building, your not getting your things and hung up. At this point I went to the court showed proof of payment after i was served the eviction, and explained how my landlord tricked me, so the court advised me that I have legal rite to collect my belongings. I then rented a truck and moved my whole business in two days. My landlord and I had a verbal agreement that I was moving out at the end of Oct, and I had a tenant to replace me. He agreed that I will pay him the $4,000 once I moved out at the end of Oct and also use my security deposit towards the payment. The papers I was served were for non payment and the eviction notice was on my door, I received a phone call from him days after I moved out and he said " I lived on a farm with pigs, and pigs are cleaner then you, If I want I can sue you for less then a penny". I left the place just as I moved in, let alone through out the years I was there he never maintained the property, replaced everyone's light fixtures with more efficient ones besides mine, and let other people enter my building without him being there and without permission. I forgot to mention my lease was over in 2008, and this all happened at the end of 2009. But anyway I checked my credit score today and I saw under public records a judgment and amount due of 10K. I was never served any notice of this suit, He never contacted me, and I had no idea until now that this went on and If I didn't check my credit today I would not know at all. I know and will contact an attorney, but wanted to see if anyone on here might have had a similar issue or any advice. Thank You All moreOpen Question: Tag line ideas for new company!?

I am constantly looking for great pieces at auctions, flea mkts, craigslist and the like, to use in my projects and have a small inventory of such items.(some of which I may occasionally sell on my site too) I provide a client sketches and or a design board to show them what I'd like to do & I first look to repurpose whatever clients already have, then make changes or addition where necessary. (This is not just decorating...I do flooring, moldings, tile, painting, countertops, sinks and fixtures, etc) I want this site to be a local resource where people in my area can refer to find good deals on products and materials for the home from vendors I work with and do some affiliate marketing on my site. I will have how-to articles and decorating tips and such for do-it yourselfers, so it will also appeal to those outside my area. I had come up with a great name "Resourceful Designs" only to find the domain name is already taken. I was planning to work my marketing message around "reinvent, reclaim, refurbish, repair, repaint, recycle"...now I'm just stumped. I can't seem to find anything that says it all like that does. Something creative and catchy (like combining words maybe) would also be great. I've been brainstorming for days and just dont like anything I've got so far. Heres what I've brainstormed so far......(Not limited to 2 words, just all I could come up with) (Also, the name can include "designs, staging, interiors, properties, or spaces, but trying hard not to limit myself too much).....If you can't come up with anything....let me know if any of these jump out at you. <Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. I seem to remember this show opening with an old man sitting in a chair, listening to a timer counting down, and a little boy walks over to him to buy a picture of a tree(i think) and the old man gets upset because the boy promised him more time, it seems time was being used as money in this episode. The man reluctantly agrees to sell this picture to the boy, and the boy adds "time" to his countdown, which is when you realize that the old man's timer is counting down on his own life. You then see the boy with his sister, she's smoking, and the boy asks her how much time she has left on her timer, and she says "I dunno, about 40 years, but don't tell mom..." Fast forward, the boy's a man, and he's at a casino with his sister and business partners. His sister uses the remainder of her "time" on slot machines, and dies in her brother's arms. This same boy has a chance to save his own mother, as he's "rich with time" and decides to let her dies as well. I have no idea if it was a movie or a TV show. I think it was on the Sci-Fi Channel once or twice. Does anyone know the title??? moreVoting Question: business name ideas? not sure if my idea works?

I'm looking to start a small business online as a copyediting consultant - I'll be doing projects for other companies editing their ad copy, web content, etc. on a contract basis; and I'll be editing any other documents that individuals might have, including resumes and the like. I want to do this under a business name rather than my own name, so I know I'll have to file a DBA, but how would I go about that? Because I have no idea how far my business will go, I want to start small. Has anyone else done a similar business venture in which startup costs are rather affordable?
