Coosa Valley Tech wins $2,500 manufacturing camp grant

Coosa Valley Technical College has been named a winner of a 2008 manufacturing camp grant awarded jointly by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association Foundation (FMAF) and the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation (NBTF).

The grants are given to not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions that offer overnight or day camp experiences that introduce young people ages 12 to 16 to careers in manufacturing and engineering.

Coosa Valley Technical College, which received a $2,500 award, is one of 26 recipients nationally.

The winners were named by John Ratzenberger, host of the Travel Channel’s “John Ratzenberger’s Made in America,” former “Cheers” star and co-founder of NBTF, a charitable organization dedicated to introducing young people to the pleasures of tinkering, and Terrence Egan, director of the FMA Foundation, an educational, research and charitable organization that promotes metal forming and fabricating technology in manufacturing. more

S&K sees potential in the uniform business

S&K Famous Brands Inc. is the latest competitor to jump into the uniform business.

The Henrico County-based discount menswear retailer has created a division to design and sell uniforms and other corporate apparel to companies for their employees to buy.

The selection of clothing ranges from uniforms worn by housekeeping or culinary workers to health-care workers and valet parking attendants. S&K also can outfit workers who need specially tailored suits for, say, front-desk work at a hotel.

The idea behind S&K Corporate Apparel is to give companies an alternative for workers so they can buy uniforms rather than rent them, said Joseph A. Oliver III, S&K's president and chief executive officer.

"We are good at sourcing clothes," he said. more

GWU seeks industrial tribunals reform

The GWU has written to minister John Dalli, who is the minister responsible for employment relations, calling for an urgent reform to the composition of industrial tribunals.

The union in a statement said it is concerned over the way tribunals were being constituted and the impartiality of the members, particularly in cases involving parastatal bodies.

"Free and impartial industrial tribunals are an essential element for the maintenance of industrial peace" the union said.

It added that as an expression of its determination to see change, it had filed two Constitutional applications in court where it is arguing that the existing tribunal is denying it the right for a fair hearing.

The union said it hoped the minister will take up the matter before the hearings are held and said it was ready for talks. more
