Workshops aim to assist startup businesses

DURANGO — Durango's community center will host a conference designed to help would-be entrepreneurs start their own businesses.

The April 9 conference will be at the Sunlight Room of Durango's Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Featuring local banker Beverly Ellis of First National Bank in Durango, the conference will enable people who want to start their own businesses to learn the technicalities, the legalities and the risks and benefits of doing so.

"First National Bank is a sponsor," Ellis said. "Joe Keck starts off the workshop with a lot of valuable information, then I follow him with information about how to find a banker and deal with banking issues."

Ellis spoke at the group's last workshop a few months ago.

"She gave advice on the state of the market and on loan availability," said Colorado Small Business Development Center Media Coordinator Rachel Beckelhymer. more

Senate candidate visits Holloman

Democratic Rep. Tom Udall toured Holloman Air Force Base Friday, viewing areas where present and future construction for the coming F-22 Raptors will be housed and maintained.

"Part of my visit was for a briefing on the bed down of the F-117 Stealths, which are being retired in Tonopah, Nev.," he said.

Udall said with the terrain at Holloman being similar to that of the Middle East, the base is ideal for training pilots.

"The future of transferring our forces into ones that can effectively face today's threats are significantly different than threats our nation has faced in the past," he said. "Holloman is premier space for air space."

Udall said he is always impressed with how past senators had the vision to see the value of this location as a base. Udall is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici. more

Open Question: If ACORN is such a reputable organization, why are they closing their doors in Ohio?

As part of a settlement agreement resulting from a lawsuit filed by Maurice Thompson of the 1851 Center for Constitutional Law, ACORN has agreed to permanently give up its business license and curtail many of its political activities in the state of Ohio. The agreement does not prohibit some of their other activities, but it does amount to an admission that their voter registration efforts produced a demonstrable pattern of fraudulent regstrations. Under the settlement ACORN is supposed to end its operations in Ohio by June 1st. They have also agreed not to return to the state to carry out those operations under a different name as they did when prohibited from registering voters in New York and California. http://blogcritics.org/politics/article/acorn-to-shut-down-operations-in/ Wasn't Obama part of this organization at one point?http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2010/03/11/copy/acorn-is-out-of-ohios-elections.html?adsec=politics&sid=101 http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/87338437.htmlCrown - I live in Ohio. more

Resolved Question: I want to start my own make up line?

The purpose of this is to start my own business by opening a web shop with my own cosmetics. I will be making these (mainly loose eye shadow) products myself. I don't know if I have to register anything, such as the name for the company and products or need to get a license. Who do I need to go to? I mainly need an answer to this as I don't know what the regulations are for this in the UK. I would also like to know if someone knows any suppliers of cosmetic jars for a good price, in particular 5 gram jars and where I could get labels or stickers printed with the company's logo and name (or is there a device that will allow me to do this myself). This goes in particular for the stickers as they will have to fit on the jars. Please note that I'm not interested in reselling make up, I will be making the products myself and just need help on finding jars and stickers. Some help on setting up a website would be helpful too as I don't know if and how I can do the layouts, pages, etc. I would love some help on this as it has been a dream of mine to produce my own cosmetics and I don't want to mess it up. Other tips are appreciated as well =) more

Voting Question: UK VAT question in relation to a sole trader with 2 separate businesses?

Hi, I have 2 separate companies which were formed at the same time. One of them needed to be registered for VAT whilst the other was not as it won't reach the VAT threshold. Resolved Question: Can someone claim trademark to a name online outside of his jurisdiction?

My partner and I have a small business repacking coffee beans. We are registered here in the Philippines with DTI. We opened up a shop on Multiply with our business name (for example, "Golden Bean Coffee"). Then just yesterday, our Multiply account was suspended because another coffee company in North Carolina who had the same trademark ("Golden Bean Coffee") claimed we were violating their trademark. Is that allowed? Considering we are in the Philippines and the other company was in the US? We're selling our beans online, to both local and foreign buyers. What do we do? Change our name or stick to it? more

Resolved Question: Production Company name Copyright question.?

Hey, I am working as a Cinematographer here in New York. Whenever I work on a project, I have my production company name logo played in the opening sequences. Now I don't have a production company, I just use this name (lets call it ABC Productions.) I plan to actually start the production company in the future, with offices and employees and everything, but for now I just want to use the name. Is there a way that I could copyright the name of the production company, to use for my website, and for my work, without actually having to deal with all the other business stuff (permits, taxes, etc.) I don't want to register a company, just the name, so I can start the company later, but I want to use the name now. Thanks in advance, Franky more

Voting Question: Business takeover question?

A friend and I are starting a company. However, I don't agree to his terms. Also, he wants to do this under the table. I believe that the business idea will be successful. He thought of the idea and we both thought of the name. My question is, if he hasn't registered the business name or trade marked the name. Can I legally register the business and have it be my business? Keep in mind, he thought of the idea, but we both thought of the name. However, there are no records proving that he came up with the idea. Thoughts?I am not looking to screw him over. I am looking to have this done right. And to stay in business long enough so that we can make good money. more

Resolved Question: Married ladies, What do you think of this?

I was reading this weekend and inspired to a business opportunity which caters to the married woman. I think it would be a sort of escort service for married women and I think many would pay for this service. Its a night out which provides all the things that husband does not. It would start by meeting in a suite in a 5 star hotel suite discreetly registered under a name that cannot be traced. There I will cook a great dinner with no kids, cell phones, husbands or beer ( fine wine if desired only for you). During being served dinner and while you dine, conversation about anything you want with rapt attention. After all of this, its finally to bed for something you really want. Large bed satin sheets, turn out the lights where I lean over quietly and whisper, " You had a hard day, you need your sleep, Good night" There I kiss your cheek and quietly leave. In the morning you leave the cash on the dresser for me to come back and clean up and remove the trash. I think that married women would pay huge for this one. What do you think? Would you ante up for this?@Wet Pet, Yes I forgot. I would arrange for the baby sitter as well.OKAY, I hear you, massages too, foot, back, whole body, whatever. That will have to be an additional cost option though. Without the sex thing I'd have to be paid somehow. I AM a guy afterall. more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with this new bill Bill to eliminate illegal immigrant driver loophole advances?

Weymouth — A bill filed by Sen. Robert L. Hedlund designed to prevent illegal immigrants from registering motor vehicles in Massachusetts has advanced in the Legislature and is gaining support from lawmakers. The Joint Committee on Transportation approved the bill Thursday, just two days after the Senate included similar language in its “Safe Driving Bill.” “It is clear that more and more of my colleagues recognize the danger that exists when loopholes exist that enable people without driver’s licenses and, without any sort of training, register and then get behind the wheel of a car,” Hedlund said. The measure was not included in the House version of the Safe Driving Bill. Differences between the House and Senate bills will be negotiated by a conference committee. Sen. Hedlund expects to be one of the six legislators named to the committee. “Including this piece in the final version of the Safe Driving Bill will be one of my top priorities as a member of this conference committee,” Hedlund said. “We cannot truly have safe roads, if we continue to make it easy for unlicensed and untrained drivers to own cars.” The Transportation Committee endorsement is important, he said, because it provides extra weight during the conference committee process. It also means that if the language is stripped out from the final conference committee report, it measure can still be passed as a standalone bill. State law currently prohibits illegal immigrants from applying for and receiving drivers licenses. However, drivers are not required to show proof they have a valid license when registering their vehicles. By taking advantage of this loophole, many illegal immigrants are able to drive legally registered cars without ever having to take a driver’s education course, or pass a road test. According to reports, there are approximately 170,000 vehicles on the roadway with so-called “X-registrations.” Although some belong to senior citizens who no longer drive, or to commercial business, the vast majority belong to illegal immigrants. Hedlund filed his bill, S 1921, after hearing from a number police officers complaining about difficulties policing illegal immigrant drivers. According to one North Shore police officer, during an 8-month period he pulled over 13 vehicles that ended up being registered to drivers without a valid license. Other police officers say illegal immigrant drivers also often cancel their car insurance, or let is lapse, once they secure their registration. This can lead to problems if an unlicensed, untrained driver without insurance is involved in a car accident, the officers say. The bill requires that corporations registering motor vehicles produce a federal tax identification number, or a social security number, if the business entity is a sole proprietorship. It allows the RMV to grant specific exemptions, such as if a vehicle is owned by a senior citizen who no longer drives, but instead is driven around by friends or family members. http://www.wickedlocal.com/weymouth/news/x1918404513/Bill-to-eliminate-illegal-immigrant-driver-loophole-advances more

Voting Question: maybe a love story? or maybe i'm just confused (need some secret agent females with decoding skills!)?

about 3 months ago I sold something on eBay and the buyer requested that I FedEx it. So I hit the internet and found a fedex place nearby. I called before hand and they said they could handle the package (it was kind of big). I went over there and it was a very girly place (candles and cards and other stuff) and they were all very nice. i dropped the package off and left. The next day I got a call asking me to call them back, there was a problem with the package and that they would be there till 2pm or something like that (this was on a friday). I neglected to call or come by on sat. Monday I called there and asked to speak to the girl who helped me the day before (we'll call her Aud) the girl on the phone said she wasn't available then asked if i wanted to leave a message. I told her who i was and all of a sudden she perked up and said here's Aud. She told me that the package needed to be repacked there was a problem...I asked if i could repack it there, she said yeah...So i told her i'd be there later in the afternoon......Later that afternoon (monday) I went over there and she asked if i was going to do it there and I said no I'll take it with me, I have some stuff to do. I take the package home and repack it. Next day (tues) I head back over there. This day I'm dressed a little bit nicer (was in work clothes the other two times). I can tell she's a little nervous talking to me (kinda had the deer in headlights look in her eyes). I thought she was sweet so when she wasn't looking I tried to catch a glimpse of her ring finger to see if she was married...Halfway down her arm she caught me. I know she had to think I was staring at her chest...lol. At this point I'm embarrased and she seems to be too. Thankfully one of her coworkers compliments me on my cardboard engineering (it was a poor attempt but you could tell I worked so hard on it) I said thanks (i really did appreciate the compliment cause I did catch hell with that box). So, business is done and I'm getting ready to walk out the door and this girl does the most befuttling thing. She says they're gonna play with my tennis ball machine (what was in the package) and then kind of jumps in the air, throws her head and arm back and kicks her heel up behind her like a figure skater. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STORE...Customers and everything. This girl has been quiet, shy, and nervous the whole time I've been there and then she does something like this. I was lost. I smiled at her, gave her a funny look, and said "ok ya'll have fun with it". and was out the door before I knew it. Looking back I think she was trying to get my attention and like I said I was out the door before it registered with me. Once you drop the ball the ball's dropped, right. So fast forward to last friday. I have some stuff I might need to ship fedex so I called that afternoon. I called right at 5:30 because that's what time they close. Got the answering machine. Wasn't listening so I called back to see if they said the store hours. This time someone answers...So i'm like is Aud there? they're like no, and then they ask to take a message. I say no thanks I'll call her back later. So saturday night I get a call from a number I don't know. I say "hello?" they don't say anything. I say hello again and still nothing. I say "hellooooo" one more time and don't hear anything but silence so i hang up. Monday afternoon about 15 min before they close I call the fedex place and get some other girl. She says "fedex can i help you blah blah blah" and I say "can I speak with Aud". the girl's like she stepped out is there something i can help you with. I explain that I'm trying to ship something and I tell her my name and that i was in there a couple of months ago with the tennis ball machine. As soon as I said that she was like "yeah we remember you! la la la la la" and she commences to practically throwing herslef at me. Thing is I called over there because I'm really just interested in the original girl (i don't even know who this other girl is). Anyway after steering the conversation back to what I was originally calling for she said that Aud was out picking up her son and would be back in a few minutes and that if i would give her my number she would ger her to call me back. That was Monday. She hasn't called me back. What do ya'll think 1. she could be less than enthused to talk to me considering it's been 2 1/2 months 2. She could not give a rats ass about returning a business call 3. her friend could have forgotten to give her the message 4. the friend's mad i shot her down and conviently 'forgot' to give her the message. I get the sneaking suspicion she's either pissed or the friend is cockblocking me. What do you girls think? damn that's a book sorry more

Resolved Question: What exactly do I need to do in order to get a website up and running?

Our family business is ready to have a website. What exactly do we need to do? I guess what is the best place to start in order to help us start a new website. We have an idea, just don't want to pay for something and not have it be what we are looking for. Our idea so far is to build a website on a website builder program/service. And then we were thinking about registering with google to get our name out there. Is this the right thing to do? Are we going in the right direction? more

Resolved Question: suspended license? PA/NJ?

okay i'm gonna try to make a long story short, i used to live in Pottsville, PA. my boyfriend at the time asked me to register a truck for him in my name for a landscaping business. At the time I only had a EXPIRED SUSPENDED NEW JERSEY license, and the state of PA still let me register it. The truck ended up breaking down & got a ticket for abandoning of veh. I moved back to NJ, renewed my NJ license & I was paying my fine for months on time, PA informed me that I was over paying & to not worry about it for a couple months. Okay fine, months go by and they never sent me a letter stating how much I still owed or anything. I recently got a letter in the mail stating that I'm $70 behind and that they suspended my license on the 22nd. Can they do this?? I also just checked on the Motor Vehicle Commission for NJ, it says my license is fine, and i owe nothing! more

Voting Question: What do you think of my story?

Here is chapter one of my story (I'm not asking about grammar I just want to know what you think of the plot so far. Also i have chapter 2 done and i am working on number 3 right now) On the first day of my adventure I woke up to my favorite song “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi. Of course at the time I had no idea what was about to happen “Morning already?” I groaned. Suddenly my eyes shot open as I realized what day it was “It’s the first day of summer vacation and yesterday was my last day of 12th grade…that means freedom!” suddenly the phone rang “Hello?” I said when I picked up the phone it was my friend Mike on the other line. “Hey Michael,” said Mike “’Sup?” I asked casually “Not much, you?” “I just woke up,” “You just woke up? Dude it’s like 1 in the afternoon,” “So? It’s not like there’s school today,” “Dude there was a snow make up day today you missed school today and they said anyone who didn’t show loses their diploma and has to repeat the 12th grade,” “…what? Are you serious?!” I asked, panicking “Nope I’m just screwin’ with you,” “I’ll get you for that,” “You say that every time and yet you never do,” “Just you wait you’ll never see it coming,” “Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before anyway I gotta go, talk to you later,” “Bye,” I said and hung up. Mike and I have been friends since grade school some people say it was fate because they had we same first and middle names, and, although it was fate, our names had nothing to do with it. Mike was the always the prankster and I always tried to get him back but never succeeded but I would always dream of the day when I would win, little did I know it would actually happen…but that’s for later. I walked outside, locked up my house, turned on the alarm, put Moose, my St. Bernard outside, and got in my car. I didn’t know where I was going I just knew I would drive until I felt like stopping I was free and that’s all I cared about. I was driving for a few hours and that’s when it happened. I was just driving along minding my own business when someone ran right in front of my car. I slammed on my brakes to try and stop in time but I still hit the guy and totaled my car. I immediately got out of the car to see if the guy was ok. “Hey man I’m so sorry you alright?” I asked the guy lying on the street. I turned the man over to see the blood coming from my forehead “Oh my god I think I killed him.” The man’s eyes slowly opened as I reached into my pocket “Take this and go to this address,” he said handing me a piece of paper “Tell him…Cerb sent you” and with those last words the man passed away and I walked to the gas station 2 miles away and called Mike. “Dude you gotta help me I think I killed a guy,” I said “What?! Where are you?!” “I’m at a gas station at where we used to drive,” “Alright I’ll be over ASAP,” “Thanks dude oh and bring 2 shovels.” A few hours later Mike showed up at the gas station “Come on I’ll take you there,” and they went to the crash site but my car was fine and there was no body “What the hell happened? My car was totaled,” I said “Well it looks fine now,” Mike replied not believing me. “You think I’m making this up!?” I asked now scared “Well earlier you did threaten to get me back,” “I didn’t mean like this,” “It’s over Michael you won I’m going home.” And with that Mike walked away and went back home. I stayed and looked at my car to make sure it was fine. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the paper with the address and ripped it up. After that I got in my car and drove to the gas station. I looked at my gas gauge. “Empty,” I muttered. I walked inside grabbed a soda and some snacks for the road and gave the cashier 20 dollars “Number 6,” “My favorite number,” the cashier replied. As I was leaving the cashier called back to him “Sir, I think you forgot something,” I walked back to the register to see a piece of paper “Tell anyone of our meeting and you will regret it, now then you will go to this address tomorrow or I will find you,” I grabbed the paper ran to the car and turned it on. When I looked in the gas station the guy at the register smiled a wicked smile and I glanced at the gas gauge and saw it was full and saw the 20 dollars in my cup holder and drove off. The next morning I woke up lazily, looked outside saw the bright sun and partial clouds and remembered the previous day instantly. “I’m not going to let my life be controlled by some creep I’ve never even met.” I carried on with my day normally which consisted of video games, eating, and watching television. This time as I was watching my favorite show the screen went fuzzy, turned off, and the man from earlier showed up on the screen. “Go to the address. Go to the address,” I repeated over and over. I tried changing the channel but it didn’t work. I tried turning off the TV. Nothing. I tried unplugging it, muting it,I have never seen secret life of the american teenager I've just always liked the name moose for a St. Bernard but i will change it anyway. more

Resolved Question: Another Odd Japanese Question?

OK, I was interested in getting an inkan registered in Japan for business purposes. OK, simple enough. but I am wondering about if one should get it in Kana, or simply in the normal English. Again, this would be used for legal and business purposes? My first name is Ken, which surprisingly does have an equivalent in Japanese, although I am not sure of the Kanji. The rough equivalent name is Kensuke...which has the same literal meaning and the Celtic "Kenneth." Obviously just a coincidence, but I am wondering about how to write my name in Japan. Is a Western signature acceptable in lieu of the inkan? Thanks again.@Lutlam: The problem with using the kana is that most US names are long. I mean, Kenneth would take up most of the space. Then we have the middle initial and the surname...so my inkan would be the size of a tennis ball. LOL more

Resolved Question: Can someone help me understand this?

Doubtless, there is a universal justice emanating from reason alone; but this justice, to be admitted among us, must be mutual. Humanly speaking, in default of natural sanctions, the laws of justice are ineffective among men: they merely make for the good of the wicked and the undoing of the just, when the just man observes them towards everybody and nobody observes them towards him. Conventions and laws are therefore needed to join rights to duties and refer justice to its object. In the state of nature, where everything is common, I owe nothing to him whom I have promised nothing; I recognise as belonging to others only what is of no use to me. In the state of society all rights are fixed by law, and the case becomes different. But what, after all, is a law? As long as we remain satisfied with attaching purely metaphysical ideas to the word, we shall go on arguing without arriving at an understanding; and when we have defined a law of nature, we shall be no nearer the definition of a law of the State. I have already said that there can be no general will directed to a particular object. Such an object must be either within or outside the State. If outside, a will which is alien to it cannot be, in relation to it, general; if within, it is part of the State, and in that case there arises a relation between whole and part which makes them two separate beings, of which the part is one, and the whole minus the part the other. But the whole minus a part cannot be the whole; and while this relation persists, there can be no whole, but only two unequal parts; and it follows that the will of one is no longer in any respect general in relation to the other. But when the whole people decrees for the whole people, it is considering only itself; and if a relation is then formed, it is between two aspects of the entire object, without there being any division of the whole. In that case the matter about which the decree is made is, like the decreeing will, general. This act is what I call a law. When I say that the object of laws is always general, I mean that law considers subjects en masse and actions in the abstract, and never a particular person or action. Thus the law may indeed decree that there shall be privileges, but cannot confer them on anybody by name. It may set up several classes of citizens, and even lay down the qualifications for membership of these classes, but it cannot nominate such and such persons as belonging to them; it may establish a monarchical government and hereditary succession, but it cannot choose a king, or nominate a royal family. In a word, no function which has a particular object belongs to the legislative power. On this view, we at once see that it can no longer be asked whose business it is to make laws, since they are acts of the general will; nor whether the prince is above the law, since he is a member of the State; nor whether the law can be unjust, since no one is unjust to himself; nor how we can be both free and subject to the laws, since they are but registers of our wills. We see further that, as the law unites universality of will with universality of object, what a man, whoever he be, commands of his own motion cannot be a law; and even what the Sovereign commands with regard to a particular matter is no nearer being a law, but is a decree, an act, not of sovereignty, but of magistracy. I therefore give the name "Republic" to every State that is governed by laws, no matter what the form of its administration may be: for only in such a case does the public interest govern, and the res publica rank as a reality. Every legitimate government is republican;10 what government is I will explain later on. Laws are, properly speaking, only the conditions of civil association. The people, being subject to the laws, ought to be their author: the conditions of the society ought to be regulated solely by those who come together to form it. But how are they to regulate them? Is it to be by common agreement, by a sudden inspiration? Has the body politic an organ to declare its will? Who can give it the foresight to formulate and announce its acts in advance? Or how is it to announce them in the hour of need? How can a blind multitude, which often does not know what it wills, because it rarely knows what is good for it, carry out for itself so great and difficult an enterprise as a system of legislation? Of itself the people wills always the good, but of itself it by no means always sees it. The general will is always in the right, but the judgment which guides it is not always enlightened. It must be got to see objects as they are, and sometimes as they ought to appear to it; it must be shown the good road it is in search of, secured from the seductive influences of individual wills, taught to see times and spaces as a series, and made to weigh the attractions of present and sensible advantages against the danger of distant and hidden evils. Voting Question: Does this paper look okay?

[business complaint letter for a school assignment] 5 Hill Street Madison, Wisconsin 53700 February 15, 2010 Ms. Lidia Marks President Lidia’s Soups and Sandwiches 123 Blossom Lane Boston, Massachusetts 01234 Dear Ms. Marks: My name is Jill Smith. I have visited your branch at 545 Main Street often over the past five years and have enjoyed the fast service and high quality of the food. Unfortunately my last visit was unpleasant. I would like you to reevaluate how you train your new employees and enforce the company’s policies. On February 16th, 2010, I came into Lidia’s Soups and Sandwiches to order my usual meal and noticed that the new cashier was wearing rubber gloves while operating the cash register. I watched as he took the money from the customer in front of me with his gloves on, and then proceeded to prepare a sandwich for her! He did not take his gloves off, wash his hands, and put on a new pair of gloves before he touched the food. When it was my turn to order, I told the new employee that I would appreciate it if he took off his gloves and put on a fresh pair before he prepared my food. The boy seemed annoyed by my request, but did as I had asked of him. When my order was ready the employee did not inform me to have a nice day or even smile. I left feeling disappointed. Ms. Marks, with a stronger training system, your employees will not only understand the importance of following the state's health code properly, but also server your customers with a smile. This will ensure that customers are happy and will want to come back. If I have another bad experience at Lidia’s Soups and Sandwiches, I’m not sure I will be coming back. Best Regards, Jill Smith more
