Restaurant, hotel and bar business is always good when Chicago comes to down. It's even better with a tight battle for first place. As one hotel manager says, he wishes there was a Cubs-Brewers series every week.Bill Burger and his Cub fan friends from Rockford are lucky. They've got a hotel room and tickets…both incredibly hard to find this week.“We've come up here for quite a few years. We were at Wrigley a couple weeks ago. It's pure fun," Burger said.They're staying at the Ambassador Hotel, and the inn is out of room. Most other hotels say they have nothing available until Thursday, after the Cubs-Brewers series ends.“The Cubs being in town this home stand has got the hotel sold out for the series. We sure love it when the Cubs come to town and the Brewers are doing well," Jon Jossart from the Ambassador Hotel said.Aside from a few scattered single seats and standing room spots, the box office is out, driving prices way up at ticket brokers.At Ticket King, John Lamoreaux says he's never sold Brewers tickets like this before.“The only time we've seen demand like this is for the Packers. more

Businesses expect big profits from luxury cars

Automobile businesses predict that luxury cars continue to be dominant in imports in the second half of this year as the demand is still on the rise.

Meanwhile, imports of other kinds of completed built unit (CBU) cars declined in recent two months, from 5,500 CBUs in May to 4,500 in June.

It was partly attributed to the Finance Ministry's decision to raise the import tariff on CBUs from 60 percent to 83 percent and banks' tougher loan restriction to reduce inflation.

Experts forecast a continual decline in imports of CBUs in the second half of the year following the Government's solutions to rein in raging inflation.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Communication, there are over 800,000 automobiles in Vietnam, compared to over 20 million motorbikes. more

During the summer holidays, however, he changed his mind after working for a synthesiser company. When the boss offered him a job with a start-up venture selling computers he jumped at the chance.

Dudderidge ended up staying with the company for five years. He left in the hope of getting a job with a firm specialising in 3G mobile-phone technology. Without an MBA or a degree, however, he couldn’t find a business to take him on. So he joined an events-management company, running a new division.

He did well, but when the market collapsed three years later in 2001 — and with the arrival of his first child — Dudderidge realised that it was time to make a change.

So he took a job as sales manager with a European technology company — but it was still not where he wanted to be. more

'Crime is choking small businesses'

Crime has a devastating effect on the profitability and viability of many small enterprises, according to the findings of a Small Business Project survey released on Wednesday. The survey found that small business owners were very worried about crime affecting their business and their own safety. "They feel unsafe and are pessimistic about any prospect of relief." According to the survey, two thirds of business owners interviewed did not see any decrease in crime levels over the next year and over a third expected crime levels to rise. The survey covered 446 small and emerging businesses, almost all owned by previously disadvantaged groups in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. . more

3 men charged with stealing equipment from Warren company's vans

The three men had taken four catalytic converters, several saws and other tools and equipment belonging to the fire protection company.

All three men pleaded not guilty to the charges and were being held at the Macomb County Jail. Vogel and Richie and held on $50,000 cash or surety bonds while King�s has been set at $100,000. They are scheduled to be back in 37th District Court on Aug. 5 for a preliminary exam.
