Microsoft: still a business of threats?

The obvious thought came to me while writing last week's column ("SCO Group: Its future is all used up") that about the only folk (other than the deluded and amoral management of the SCO Group) that want the SCO Group effort attacking Linux and other open source initiatives to succeed is Microsoft. So I decided to explore that side in this follow-up column, but a bit of reading led me to the conclusion that things are not as simple as they appear.

For years Microsoft has been claiming that Linux has been stealing its intellectual property rights (IPR, i.e., patented technology).

NC ranks among top states for business climate The Business

Texas, North Carolina and Georgia have the best business climates among the 50 states, according to a recent survey of executives by Development Counsellors International.

North Carolina ranked second among the 281 respondents, with 30 percent saying the state has the best business climate.

Texas was No. 1 among 41 percent of survey participants, while Georgia was third (20 percent). They were followed by Tennessee and Florida (15 percent each) and Nevada (14 percent).

Executives frequently cited a strong labor market and low operating costs in selecting the top states.

The poll placed California, New York and Michigan at the bottom.

Earnings: Disney Inches Past Estimates; Cable Networks Business

Disney ( NYSE: DIS) announced quarterly revenue of $9.23 billion, up 2 percent form last year, and edging out analyst estimates of $9.14 billion. Net income was up 7 percent to $1.28 billion. Diluted EPS, excluding an accounting adjustment was $.62, just a shade ahead of $.61 consensus estimates. The results almost look like the opposite of Viacom's ( NYSE: VIA) report from yesterday. Cable Networks revenue was up 12 percent to $2.59 billion, while total media networks revenue was up 8 percent to $4.12 billion. Recall that Viacom basically showed no growth at its cable networks, depending entirely on Rock Band to lift media revenue. Cable Networks op income was up 14 percent to $1.2 billion, which the company attributed to its ESPN franchise and international growth at the Disney Channel.
