The Insider: Whoo hoo, guess who's got a blog about them?

In its June issue, Business Facilities magazine ranks the top 10 localities for "biotech strength" in the United States.

Not making the list? Washington.

Business Facilities says it used a number of criteria to rank states, including "the amount of state R&D funding and venture capital investments; the level of concentrated occupational employment in biotech; tax exemptions specifically targeted to biotech; the number of biotech facilities; biotech patents generated; university grant funding; and bioscience higher education degrees, among other factors."

The list is topped by Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts, Ohio and Texas.

It's at least the second list Washington's biotech community has been left off of in 2008. Earlier this year, when BioWorld, the biotechnology newspaper, issued a special magazine, the "BioWorld Expansion and Relocation Guide," profiling 11 "biotech hubs" in the U.S. more

Model 'knew too much about Rivkin business'

THE late stockbroker Rene Rivkin was concerned that model Caroline Byrne knew "too much about his business and private life", a Supreme Court jury has heard.

Rivkin's driver, Gordon Eric Wood, 44, is accused of throwing his live-in girlfriend to her death at The Gap, at Watsons Bay in Sydney, about 11.30pm on June 7, 1995.

In his opening address yesterday, Crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, QC, told the jury that Wood had urged others to invest in a printing company associated with Rivkin, which he told them had been deliberately burned down but was over-insured.

"It's a set-up," Wood said, adding that "government people" were involved. He named the person he believed was the arsonist to Ms Byrne, the jury heard.

On Christmas Eve 1993, Offset Alpine's premises and equipment were destroyed by fire in suspicious circumstances, said Mr Tedeschi. more

How To Start A Bad Credit Loan Business Questions asked

Resolved Question: Does anyone know who will give you a auto loan with bad credit?

For a car not off their lot...we already found one we want. But a timeshare we had bought didn't report that we had paid them in full and closed our account, and so it shows that we've been delinquent for like a year and 1/2 :( We are disputing it, but until its fixed our used to be good credit has been flushed down the toilet. We really need to get another car (well van) because of the business we started and how much equipment we have to haul around, including our kids and 2 dogs. We found a used one for like $8000 (which puts our payments where we want them too, even at like a 20% interested) But we've already been denied by the credit union and Chase bank :( And waiting for a reply from wellsfargo (but doesn't sound promising).. I don't know where else you can apply, is there auto only lenders or anything out there? Thanks!Doesn't matter, co-signers are only good if you have little or no credit...not crap credit. (sorry I just went through it all today so I'm still frustrated at the situation...should have gone to freecreditreport.com lol...then we would have known that they never reported paid)Thanks we will look into Americredit. more

Resolved Question: Captial one card NON SECURED that I will be receiving or SECURED card from US bank to rebuild bad credit?

Please read this in full and respond with appropriate answers only to all questions listed. Do not list false websites or you will be reported! I want to first say that I am 25 years old and back in 2004-2005 I went thru some credit problems. I have not had any credit since and have no credit debt and it has been paid off for almost 2 years all accounts are closed. I have 3 negative accounts that will come off my reports by late 2012. I would like to start rebuilding my credit. I have recently been rejected by bank of America for a regular card which they talked me into applying for and a secured card so I have 2 inquires as of January 2010 from them. One inquiry in February 2010 from applying for a NON SECURED Capital One card with a $39 annual fee and have been approved will be receiving next week but after many reviews of the company they seem to have deceiving business practices, raising the APR rates and instead of putting for example $300 as you credit limit they put instead what you charge which would hurt my utilization on my credit scores. If you try to close the account they add fraudgelant charges to your account etc. Their customer service is from India and is not good. Is this true? I read this on yahoo answers and my 3 cents complaints. If so should I try for a US bank SECURED card with $300 down with a $35 annual fee? The credit union out here does not offer secured credit cards. If I can not receive a secured card from US Bank should I open up a 1-2 year $1,500 secured CD with my bank which is Harris bank to show an installment loan? I have 2 charge offs and a credit card account with a couple 90 day late payments which is CLOSED also. I have 5 accounts in good standing but are closed and were never used. How much will my credit scores go up from 1-2 years from now? Currently before all new inquires for 2010 my FICO scores were TU: 597 Equifax: 648. I will only be using 7% of my limit of $300 instead of under 30%. Refer to my other question on here from the other day for more details on my credit situation titled “How to rebuild credit with different types of credit and my scores quickly?” Thank you. – 10 points for best answer -I already know alot about credit from research online so do not tell me how to handle credit. Keep your debt to ration utilization under 30% but 7% or less is better because this is how you obtain a very high FICO score. Do not open alot of lines all at once and wait 6months-1 year. Do not close oldest accounts this affects the average age of credit. I know all of this.Always pay in full to avoid intrest charges and higher rates, never pay minimum payments. more

Resolved Question: Father In-Law Ruining My Marriage?

My father in-law and I have never gotten along. But we were able to stand each other until last thanksgiving. My husband and I were buying our first home and I found out that my husbands name was on a pickup his father purchased. I found out that when my husband was 18 his father needed a pick up but because of his bad credit could not get one. So my husband being dumb and 18 signed his name to it. Well when I found out that was why we were not getting our house loan I asked my father in-law to refinance. It has been 5 years since they got the pickup and his credit is a little better. But he refused. He wouldn't even go see if it was an option at the bank. So long story short we had a fight on thanksgiving about him refusing to see if he could get it refinanced. A week later the bank approved our house loan anyway and we moved in. Ever since then my father in-law has talked terrible about me. Recently my father in-law asked my husband to start a business with him. Against my wishes my husband quit his job where we both had health insurance to start this business with his dad. It is going good thank the lord but everyday all day my father in-law tells my husband what a terrible person I am and how could he have married such a B***** and so on and so on. Everyday my husband comes home and tells me everything. I can not stand it anymore. I do not know what to do. I know I should be angry at my husband for taking the job and for telling me everything but the root of the problem is my terrible father in-law. What should I do?? I am at the point where a divorce sounds like the best option. We don't have kids. Just pets and our home.....I just do not know what to do because I do love my husband and I believed what I said when I said 'I Do". Any advice?? more

Resolved Question: How can I recover from this situation that I put myself in?

Hello, I'm 23 years old and I made some mistakes in my life, I am a good guy and all just got involved with the wrong people. I am from Ohio, but I attended college out in Arizona a couple of years ago and I met someone through the college to start a business with. This business failed, I accumulated credit card debt, and he got me involved working with his uncle which turned out to be a scam artist and then set me up to commit a crime involving cashing bad checks in which I thought he was loaning me money which got me arrested, put me in jail and my family had to get a lawyer to solve this situation. Now fortunately, I'm out of jail, but I still have little money and my family is helping me out. To be honest, I thought about committing suicide, but my family helped me out and I want to repay them. I have other ways to try to make money right now filing for unemployment, going back to college, and making music and advertising it since I have music for sale online, I just need to build my fanbase. But anyway, any suggestions from anyone to help me get on my feet? more

Resolved Question: Need A Small Business loan of $6500 with bad credit. Any Ideas?

This morning had a small vending machine business idea that popped into my head. Did the research and realized in order to start it i would need just $6500 dollars. Problem is bad credit technically i could save money to get it but the problem is i would be selling a unique product to a very special clientele that i know for a fact will devour the inventory (as i am one of them) also found that i may be able to sell the product for LOWER than the price in retail stores but all it takes now is for some one else to figure this out and it goes to the first one with the idea and the money. This is a slam dunk guarantee with a very small investment. Any ideas how i can get funding? more

Resolved Question: My banks keep messing up my loans/terms, any advice?

I had a few loans out through my significant other, one small one that i used for a car about $6,000, one larger one for about $28,500, and then we had some combined stuff to do around the house, etc, so that was a home equity for about $30,000...all in all those were gotten about a year or two fairly closely together though, and they all started out as lines of credit, fixed interest rates. We both kept making payments on time, and were on great terms, then this whole credit crisis hit...our credit cards, some of them, the limits got slashed, one or two just closed.....then two of these lines of credit became variable rates...and then if that wasn't enough, they reduced the terms from lets say 6 and 8 years down to 5, just like that... and just today I found out that they're freezing them, the two of them, and they're no longer lines of credit just simply loans..which totally eradicates drawing more on it lets say at a later date. So now I especially am very angry, because I feel like we're being messed around by these banks just because they "can," even though we have good if not great credit, make our payments on time, and that's actually not THAT bad of outstanding debt being that it's not all under one person's name. it's just ridiculous though. We've been paying them down, and we still have alot of other credit available that we NEVER use, and income is good..everything is good. So now I'm depressed, becuase in the last year, with all this slashing, it put a serious dent into being able to withdraw espeially for necessary things like health bills. So as of right now I want to know what the best option would be? Should I just let things go how they are, or should I try a different bank and then just consolidate a few into one bigger loan, or try to get a line of credit and just transfer over and pay off the, forgive my language, cr@ppy loan deals we now have? Another concern is, with this outstanding debt, which isn't astronomical but it's still quite a bit... will they be less likely to approve, especially if it's secured? Does going in person help any..rather than just over the phone and internet, and perhaps putting up a collateral or securing it with something might help? The thing is, I used personal lines of credit to have as a safety net, just in case emergencies come up, I mess up and over spend,, or whatever financial crisis may arise especially in THIS economy, and it's something that you pay down but can also reach in if you need it. IT's great for rescues, but now banks are seriously cutting that down, and well....not much is available. So I'm very upset over it. I mean I can understand the economy being bad but...these banks aren't even giving out notices ahead of time to WARN us about changes@! They NEVER notified us about this recent change where they're just becoming loans and not lines of credit which we got APPROVED of. no letter in the mail, just happened. This is all by the way, BANK OF AMERICA! the other one is with capital one, and they're fine thus far. is bank of america just a bad place to do business with? They even treat their LOYAL customers like dirt and we've been banking with them for a long time now! Very depressing I'll say. What are our options? I don't want to go into some debt consolidation thing either because I can totally pay off the bills from the loans etc, tey're not that much considering they're spread out for many years, and they serve a great purpose to withdraw money from if they're lines of credit.also, once the banks do this, are these permanent changes or can they be subject to change? Bank of America's reasoning was : well we just don't DO lines of credit anymore. Fine, but why should we then bank with them? It's our money too we're paying back, so why pay under one bank's conditions & terms you don't agree with. If another bank is more negotiable and nice to their customers & offers better rates/plans.....then...why stick with bank of america? They seem very blase about actually working with you. IT's more like...this is what we offer, this is not, take it or leave it GOODBYE, no care about good customer service or a good payment history NOTHING. I feel like a number and they treat you almost condescendingly. Well why do banks offer these services...if they later complain that people shouldn't be USING THEM? It's a catch 22, if no one used them...their businesses wouldn't be as successful. Banks, what's the deal!? more

Resolved Question: How can you start a business if you don't have enough collateral to get the loan approved?

If someone is trying to start a small business in this economy it is harder than it used to be. According to the banks, and credit unions the bad economy has limited the loans available for startup funds. And you have to provide a higher percentage of collateral for the loan. Even if you could qualify for a minority loan under normal circumstances it is more difficult now. How can you start your own business if you can't gett the funds to get it off the ground? more

Resolved Question: I don't want to kill myself, I want to start living? (need $?)?

I want to learn how to invest like Warren Buffet did. He borrowed $107,000 from a total of 7 rich friends & family members. He then created a stock brokerage firm / mutual fund. I want to do that, but instead... I have a part time job with no hours I'm an actor, but can't afford headshots or classes I have court in 3 weeks, which might land me in jail for 6 months My truck is totaled, I am still waiting for my check? I have a huge street gang who's waiting for me to pay $ I owe them I owe $3,000 in bills, which will cut into the $ I get from my truck In this economy, what am I supposed to do? I'm 18, I have no credit! I don't qualify for college loans until I have good credit, and I have to spend a year taking remedial classes before I can take AP/SAT exams I'm somewhat suicidal because of my circumstances. I lost $30,000 in 4 months, equivalent to gambling it away [legal issues, bad decisions]. I'm willing to work 90 hours a week if I must to make $10-20,000 so I can get business partners to invest in a company start-up with me, but there are no jobs, where I live the unemployment rate is 14%, and I think I need to join the military to get away from the gangs & jury? I'm in quite the pickle of life right now, and I really need outside input... Help? more

Resolved Question: Being dishonest to my wife.....again?

Hi people, i'm new to the site and having googled my problem i have signed up. Here goes. About 8 months ago, my wife found out that we had quite a lot of money on credit cards and loans. She hit the roof as you'd imagine. When asked about how we were doing financially i always replied - yes. Even with this debt hanging over us I personally always saw the light at the end of the tunnel and therefore never saw it as the problem it is. Having realised this, I swore i would never do such a thing again. The pure temptation of bank transfers onto cards etc made me totally sure that we were doing ok. I only saw as far as our main bank account balance - nothing else!! She said she would leave me if this sort of thing happened again. After the mess was cleared up as far a repayments were concerned, i chopped up all credit cards but made one fatal error. I did not close down our other joint account that i knew fine well had a £1000 overdraft limit on it. We agreed to keep to a budget with all ingoings and outgoings which has worked ok. There have been a few expenses i have not been honest about (business related so nothing selfish or extravagant). As a result of this this other account is over £600 in its overdraft. Only last week she asked if we were ok for money and again i said yes. Its like I don't appreciate how much money is worth and that one 'little' debt to me can be massive to those you love. When she cornered me about it she could tell i wasn't being honest and i knew i was still trying to cover my tracks - even when i should have just came out with the truth there and then!! I knew that the worse it got that i couldn't tell her. I was always confident that this debt would be repayed in the coming months but seeing as though we are trying to work to a budget i just couldn't see how i'd manage. We talked, well more like i listened like a naughty schoolboy and she was the teacher. We have 2 young kids. I fear i'm going to loose my family and if so i don't know what i'll do. I know the error of my ways - but i still ask myself - DO I REALLY?? Who's to say i'm going to do the same thing again? I mean, i already did. Why can't i be honest about money with my wife? If this account was never left open then i would never have been tempted to play with it. When i say to her i will pay it off asap then cancel it she says that all trust is broken between us. It was just starting to be rebuilt from the last time but now i have ruined it all and don't see a way back. I don't gamble, watch EVERY penny - yet i cannot be honest about little expenditures. Do i have a problem? I know in my heart of hearts that this temptation is taken away if the account is closed. My wife quite rightly does not want to hear it, or anything for that matter. This has only just happened this evening. Its just gone midnight, i'm finishing off my final drink whilst my wife has gone upstairs. We have not spoken in hours. If anyone has any advice on any sort of condition that i may have i would like to hear from you. Thank you for taking the time to read more

Resolved Question: What has Obama done for our country?

I'll tell you what he's done! MORE THAN BUSH DID IN HIS 8 YEAR TERM. Let's see, Obama: -Reversed restrictions on stem cell research -Appointed an assistant to the president for science and technology policy -Created a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners -Expanded loan programs for small businesses -Extended and indexed the 2007 Alternative Minimum Tax patch -Expanded eligibility for State Children’s Health Insurance Fund (SCHIP) -Expanded funding to train primary care providers and public health practitioners -Directed military leaders to end war in Iraq -Sent two additional brigades to Afghanistan -As promised gave a speech at a major Islamic forum in the first 100 days of his administration -Granted Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send money to Cuba -Restored funding for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne/JAG) program -Released presidential records -Now requires new hires to sign a form affirming their hiring was not due to political affiliation or contributions -Pushed for enactment of Matthew Shepard Act, which expands hate crime law to include sexual orientation and other factors -Created a White House Office on Urban Policy -Supported increased funding for the NEA -Funded a major expansion of AmeriCorps -Worked to overturn Ledbetter vs. Goodyear -Banned lobbyist gifts to executive employees -Pledged to weatherize 1 million homes per year -Invested in all types of alternative energy -Enacted tax credit for consumers for plug-in hybrid cars -Provided grants to encourage energy-efficient building codes -As promised appointed at least one Republican to the cabinet -Extended unemployment insurance benefits and temporarily suspended taxes on these benefits. I'm sick of hearing ANYBODY say that Obama hasn't been doing anything, you don't even watch the news, read the papers, research shit online. How would YOU know what he's done? Who are you to say he's not fit for presidency, who are you to say he can't do his job right? How could you even THINK that he's worse than Bush when he's gone a hell of a lot more than Bush ever did within his 8 years. Even other countries are finally happy that we got a good president, because it's about damn time we get this country whipped into shape. Your beloved Bush put us into war, he put us into an economic crisis, and now Obama has to get us out, and he plans on trying his hardest, in fact he's already started. So all you Obama haters, shut your mouth unless you're actually informed. And to you racists, I don't know how anybody can't like somebody just because OF THEIR FREAKING SKIN COLOR! Ughh, I KNOW this isn't a question, and I know I'm going against the rules by ranting, but WOW. I guess Americans really ARE stupid.ALSO, yes a lot of people hate him for his skin color, they say it plain as day, they call him a f-ing n*gger, I've heard it plenty of times. What, did you think there was no such thing as racism in America? Also, it wasn't an actual question moron, as I clearly stated in my passage. Do you see why you're a moron now? more

Resolved Question: How can I get a small business loan with bad credit ranking (no debts, just not enough credit history)?

Hi, I was wondering how easy it is to get a small business loan (app. 2000 pound) if you have a bad credit ranking? I haven't been long enough in the UK to build up a good credit history...I have just recently got a debit card and I do have a credit card with a credit facility of 100 pound, hoping that this will help me to get a better ranking (I always pay the full amount on time). But I moved quite a lot, which doesn't help...I do have a job but don't earn as much as I used to 3 month ago...So I'm looking to start my own business...Not sure how I can persuade my bank? more

Resolved Question: Why is it when I have put all my energy into teaching my children?

what I believe to be the true values in life they have turned out so horrible? When I met my husband over 20 yeas ago we were both real ling from bad marriages.(We were single when we met). We both had partners that the only thing that seemed important to them was how things "looked". You know, the nice house full of every thing shiny and new, flash car, debts up to you're eye balls. You know what I mean. The veneer to cover up what is really going on. My husband was a social climber and so was my husbands wife. We were both miserable. This was not the life we wanted. My husband was a bore, he gave me "pocket money" and treated me like a half wit. My husbands wife was a serial adulterer and left him for his "best friend" and business partner and took everything he had, including his children. We worked together, that's how we met. We hit it off immediately, both of us going on and on about what we were really looking for, what would be nice, our hopes and dreams. We were singing from the same song sheet!! Anyway, the thing is he asked me to move in with him, and then he asked me to marry him. We have just celebrated our 21st Anniversary and I think I probably love my husband more every day. We vowed that we would not do the debt thing - no credit cards, no loans, no mortgages, no overdrafts. If we wanted something we would save up and buy it outright. We have stuck to it. Sometimes things have got really tough, especially when the children started to come along. But we did it. We have taught our children that possession's are not important and why should you have things that you haven't earned. What you have around you should be as a result of what you have achieved, not a pretense of what you would like to be. Our home is secure forever (we live in a council house) no bailiff is ever going to come to my door. My children have everything they could want. They have been on school trips to France, Italy, Barcelona, and quite a few day trips here there an everywhere. All paid for, no credit, no debt. We have two computers in the house - bought and paid for. We have five children - yes I know probably a couple to many. Things happen and you go with it. My eldest is just about to turn 17 he is mean spirited and at times very cruel. The next is 15 and tells us regularly how grateful an appreciative of him we should be as he is doing so well at school, of which he is, but this is the reason why he should be given everything he wants and shouldn't have to do anything to help around the house! My daughter who is 14 is just an unpleasant little cow, she comes and goes as she pleases, dresses like a little tramp, stays out all night without permission, smokes, drinks and gets up to god knows what with the boys. Tells me that I don't ever listen to her, which is not true,we have spent many hours talking. She makes proclamations, admitting to all her wrongs, promises to be a good girl, I let her make the terms to try and win her round, then she still can't stick to them. My twins are just about to turn 10 and time will tell what happens to them. Hopefully we have learned a few lessons from the older ones. We have taught them that people are important, looking after, and looking out for each other. Loving and caring, being honest, respectful of others and their beliefs/feelings. To do the right thing, to be a decent individual that is quite clear in their idea of right and wrong. Yet none of this seems to have stuck and we have a unpleasant bunch of selfish brats. Why is that? I have spent the last couple of days still fighting back the tears from my eldest sons latest comment, I quote, "Anyone would think you were African, you breed like vermin and live in squalor." It saddens me to think that I don't like my children, what will they become, I just hope it is just the "phase" they are going through, what do you think? I have to say that they are all doing very well at school, and everybody who meets them says how bright, intelligent and articulate they are, and how polite and helpful they are. It's just me and their dad that they are so unkind to. I love my children, they just make me unhappy. more

Voting Question: When applying for a poor credit business loan, what are the minimum credit requirements?

I am owner of a small business (LLC) that delivers to vessels in ports. I have an investor, my tax id, and all legal paperwork. Technically I am functioning, and have been for 2 weeks. My issue is this. I had another investor who has backed out, due to personal matters. I had not tried to apply for a loan at start up because I though my personal credit was too low (between 515 - 565) the business itself still has zero. I have customers that need to be supplied now, and need to come up with the other 50K. Our business plan is structured that we pay off the financier in 12 months at 30% interest. (that would have been the total 100K) So you can see incoming cash flow should not be a dilemma, and my business plan shows this. The other issue is since my industry is behind the public eye, (how many of you have been on a tanker?) It is hard for an individual to believe the numbers are accurate, when in fact we are "low-balling". If I applied as a bad credit minority, would I have a chance? Where are the best places here in Florida or otherwise to apply? Any suggestions? I need to get this going or be in a devastating situation. Additional Details I cannot go to family, or friends in this economy, finding another investor, going through the process with them, their accountants and lawyers will end up taking too much time and ruining what has been started. Our mission is to be a loyal company, my customers that I have had since fully financed, still need to be served as promised. more

Resolved Question: Why do Americans brainwashed to believe the business world is perfect?

There was a Yahoo Videogames article about how video game sales were suffering during the recession/depression. I simply said, well, if Microsoft and Sony would stop charging $60.00 for a new game printed on a piece of plastic, maybe sales would go up. I see computer games selling for much less than the same Xbox versions, what's up with that? I asked this question a bunch of people started saying, Oh, there are developer costs, royalties, programmer costs, blah blah blah, all the same excuses I've heard for years. Fact is, that's probably a SMALL percentage of the fixed costs, and the royalties are probably legalized extortion anyways. These companies make an enormous profit, and the typical excuses follow the same ones the oil companies give. Yet, why do they make huge profits? That shouldn't be happening if what they say is true. It's sad that people in America are being taught to be good consumers and not question unfair pricing practices. I see a lot of people my age and younger who have the attitude that business is about charging whatever you can get away with. WTF? It is really true that greed is destroying America, and that people are too stupid to see how it's happening. I think a lot of the problem lies with easy credit, and it should be fun to see this recession get worse as more people default on their credit card loans. We have to change, no joke!I meant, "Why are," not "Why do," sorry. more

Voting Question: Obama says - "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090620/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_consumers What in the world?!?! He's trying to MAKE the people in Washington do what he says??!! Isn't this ILLEGAL?!!? Don't the people in Washington have a LEGAL RIGHT to NOT do what he says?!?! I'm not asking if what Obama is wanting is right or wrong, good or bad. I'm just asking if it's illegal, him trying to MAKE them do what he wants. WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one." Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries. In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up. "This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments." The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms. "It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts — pages of fine print that no one can figure out — will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you." More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve. "I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept — what I will vigorously oppose — are those who do not argue in good faith." By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington. "These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now." more

Resolved Question: Why do people Blame Bush on the Economy when...?

The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) started this entire mess. If you did not know already, the fall of our banks, housing markets, and the oil crisis in the summer of 2008 lead us to our demise. The Community Reinvestment Act started it all. This Act was passed in 1977 by Congress to address the so-called discrimination by banks, which would not lend money to most minorities. The act provided that banks have “an affirmative obligation to meet the community’s needs.” The banks were not giving the loans out to minorities because most of them just didn’t have the money to pay them back-but the liberal congress under President Carter thought differently. But this Act was not enough to force the banks to give loans out to everyone. So in 1989, Congress amended the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act which required banks to collect racial data on mortgage applications. This data all came together in great use when in 1995 the Clinton Administration’s Treasury Department issued regulations tracking loans by neighborhoods, income groups, and races to rate the performance of banks. The ratings were used by regulators to determine whether the government would approve bank mergers, acquisitions, and new branches. The regulations also encouraged liberal-aligned groups, such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) and the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA), to file petitions with regulators, or threaten to, to slow down or even prevent banks from doing their business by challenging the extent to which banks were issuing these loans. With such great leverage over the banks, many of the liberal groups were able to legally extort banks and make huge pools of money available to them. Then with such power over the banks, the government and groups were able to force the banks to give out loans to individuals who had bad credit or insufficient income. These loans are known as “sub-prime” loans. Most estimates put the figure of CRA-eligible loans at $4.5 trillion dollars lost to the banks… In 1992 the Department of Housing and Urban Development pressured two government chartered corporations, known as Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, to buy large bundles of those sub-prime loans for the conflicting purposes of diversifying the risk and making even more money available to banks to make further risky, sub-prime loans. Congress also passed the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act, which mandated that those companies buy 45% of all loans from people of low or moderate income… In 1995 the Treasury Department under the Clinton Administration established the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, which provided banks with taxpayer money to allow the banks to give out more risky, sub-prime loans. All of these actions turned the sub-prime mortgage market into a huge ticking time bomb that would magnify the housing bust by orders of magnitude… These policies lead to the housing boom which was seen in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. But it all eventually back fired when loans weren’t being paid back. The banks ended up losing more money than they were making - that lead to the collapse of our banks. This also led to the housing market’s demise or BIG bust… How did this affect the housing market? Well there were no more loans being given out, since the banks finally began to collapse. With no money being given out and thousands of houses going into foreclosure it is easy to see how the housing market went to hell… As you can see, the liberals caused us the major reason for our demise. All because they believed people had the right to houses. All because they believed high spending and expansion of government would help the poor… It didn't... But that was not the only reason for our fall. The high spending from congress led to higher debt and almost no money, which forced us to borrow from China… This debt left us with almost no money and that is why taxes were raised on most middle class families. This spending came from republicans and democrats who believed more government programs would reduce poverty or fix any other problems. It mainly came from the war over seas. Then came the gas crisis in the summer of 2008. This crisis happened due to the supply of oil being lower than the demand. It was also due to the speculation at home and the raising of prices by the Saudi Arabians. This all could’ve been avoided if President Clinton allowed the oil companies to drill in Alaska. In the 1990’s the companies went to congress for approval, but they were shot down… Many liberals say we have almost no oil here, but the REAL experts from the oil companies say we have more oil than the Middle East. Who would you trust? Oil company experts or politicians? My point is thI'd like to see people actually read this answer instead of acting like ignorant idiots. more

Resolved Question: question about how first time small business loans work?

I am interested in starting a small business. I am in my mid-twenties and I have very good credit. I also have a steady job that I would intend to keep while running my business at the same time. I am looking for a small business loan of roughly $100,000. I have no major debt at all other than a car payment. With the economy so bad, what are the chances of a bank giving me a loan of $100k? Since I am young, will I more than likely need a co-signer? any info is appreciated. I am just curious as to how this process works. thanks more

Resolved Question: Why do stores have to borrow to stock their shelves?

I guess I'm naive, but I remember being very surprised upon hearing how the credit crunch affected retailers, who were having a hard time getting loans to buy merchandise. I guess I always thought it worked like this: You buy an item for $5, sell it for $10. $5 goes to buy a replacement item, the other half is profit. Simple. Obviously it's not like that. But if you ~borrow~ $5 to buy your item, and have to pay back $6 with interest, your $10 sale only nets you $4, not even enough to buy another item, let alone any profit! I understand how a business would borrow money to get started, but borrowing every month makes no sense. I think it gets to the fundamental reason for the current economic crisis; our economy is based on Credit, not Money. It's not really goods and services that are traded at the top levels, but Debt. Good for banks, bad for people. Or do I have it all wrong? ;-) more

Resolved Question: How can I go back to school?

Hi! I'm 26 years old. I have 2 years of college under my belt. I stopped going to school because I was out of money and didn't understand how things worked (getting plus loans and such). Now I finally know what I want to do with the rest of my life (become a Physician's Assistant). The problem I have is this: I've worked for the past 5 years. I have a girlfriend, rent, a car payment, Insurance and I pay student loans as well, not to mention standard living expenses. I'm getting a job at a company that does tuition assistance but they only cover business type degrees whereas I need a biology(science) degree. I'm at a loss as to how, with these bills, to go back to school. My credit is messed up from when I was younger. I'm trying to save up to get it back to normal and I've made some progress but still owe about $4000. Has anyone been in a similar situation and made it back to school full time? Is it easier to get loans at 26 then when you are younger because of expected contributions from family? With bad credit can you get enough loans to cover tuition and living expenses? I'm not worried about owing money because PA's have a high starting salary and normally a ton of OT available if they want it. Anyway, I appreciate the help! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How can I raise money to start a small business? Are there grants available for someone to start with?

Voting Question: What are the Technical degrees most wanted by the Air Force?

My husband just finished his associates in CNS. And he is now getting his Bachelors in Network security. He really wants to join the Air Force as an officer after that.He will be 29 years old when he has his Bachelors and his GPA right now is 3.8. I have heard they like engineering degrees but what about computer/network security? p.s. anything you can tell me about joining as an officer in our situation would help. We have 2 kids and have bad credit because of forclosure and losing our business in Michigans bad economy. But we did what we could by him immediatley joining school and continuing to work full time. We moved to San Antonio because we thought there were better opportunities here. Also, will he be able to go to school part time for his masters ?(it doesnt matter to us if they pay or not) He already has over 100k in private and technical school loan debt. He can't be out of school for more than 6 mos. Or he has to start paying his loans back. So how soon after joining as an officer could he take at least 2 courses towards his Masters? Our long term goal is to have a rewarding career where we can live small and pay off our student loans ASAP. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How can I go about starting my own retail business if I have bad credit?

I have an idea for a business that may flourish in the area where I live. The start-up should not be too much. My only issue is that my credit isn't too good. What can I do get a loan to start up a business? Who can I go to for support financially if I get turned away by banks? The business would be a gaming/hobby shop. One has to travel almost 10 miles north or south to find such a shop. That's why I think I would flourish. FYI this would be in the Central Orange county area, in Southern California. more

Resolved Question: It was Bush's fault because...well because?

Do people understand that what caused most of the economic problems that we have today? The real estate market is 25% of the US economy. Depending on where it is the rest of the economy generally follows. Back in the 90's clinton implemented actions that forced lenders to approve loans to people with bad credit and low income. This is sometimes called the sub-prime market or B loans. These loans gave money to people to buy houses that they had no business owning. Because money was so cheap and available housing prices went up. People were then able to use home equity to get more credit. Little obama was a major fan of these lending practises. This is what he did as a community organizer, he even protested two banks that were going to merge and not offer sub-prime loans. Well this sub-prime market fell apart in the last few years just like so many people had warned. Credit, the thing that keeps the economy moving, dried up effectively stopping the economy. Banks and insurers began to fail. Bush had only one part in all of this. He sent numerous requests to Barney Frank to have him fix the problem. Franks boyfriend sat on the board at Fannie Mae so nothing happened. Barney would rather his boyfriend stay rich than save the American people the trouble we face today. Also, keep in mind that the economy was doing well from 2001-2006 when Congress fell to the democrats control. So Bush and Congress was able to keep the economy in the black after clinton left a shrinking economy and after 9/11 and with 2 wars taking place. So how is this Bush's doing? Should we just ignore the damage Congress has caused in the past 2 years? Is clinton not to blame even though he started the issues that have us where we are today? Please, give serious answer, and think first! more

Resolved Question: Will having several bank accounts hurt my credit score? Or be bad for me in any way?

Right now I've got: - 1 savings account (I never touch it) - 1 checking account that I use to pay for food, books, living expenses - 1 checking account that I use for selling stuff on eBay (PayPal Business account) Both checking accounts are at different banks - mainly because I just moved and one of the banks has a branch right by my new place. I also have two credit cards - one tied to first checking account I mentioned, and one department store credit card. I always pay my credit card balance in full by the end of every period. I'm never late, I've never over-drafted, etc. I'm still in college, but I have no loans / debts. Now my question (finally! haha): I want to set up a separate PayPal account - just a personal one for shopping on eBay. PayPal says that having one personal and one business account is fine, but each account must have its own separate financial info. Now I'm finding myself needing a different bank account to start a new PayPal account. I don't mind moving some money over to start one up, but I wasn't sure if it "looks weird" to have a bunch of checking accounts? I've heard people say that it's bad to have too many credit cards, so I was just thinking... Sorry if this is a dumb question. I just wasn't even sure how many accounts the average person has, anyway...? Is four more than / less than average, or does that even matter? Thanks!! more

Resolved Question: How do I get a better relationship with my father?

This one has some length to it, so beware before reading. When I was 15, I started talking to my father. We grew extremely close and would talk nearly everyday and I would stay over there at least once per week. We continued to be this close until I was about 17. Then we slowly started to grow farther apart. We still spent some time together though, just not as much. The time we spent together became less and less. I turned 18 shortly after I graduated in May 2008, and I was kicked out of my mother's place because she couldn't afford for me to stay there. My father said he didn't want me to come live with him (my father and his wife make over $200,000 per year) and I didn't have a job or a place to live. A friend's parents ended up letting me stay there for 2 months. I found a job and saved up some money. I think it is also important to note that I lived in Nebraska where the legal age of an adult is 19, so I couldn't sign contracts or anything to get an apartment. I only saw my dad maybe two or three times over the summer. After the time at my friend's was up, I needed a place to live. I couldn't afford to go to school, and my father wouldn't help me cosign for a student loan to pay for school (I couldn't sign for one myself because you have to be 19 in Nebraska). My mother's credit was not good enough. To explain school situation: I only applied to one school before the deadline and it was a private school, so I didn't receive nearly enough to cover the $30,000 tuition. I applied to the public universities, but it was after the deadline so no scholarships. So anyways, I couldn't go to school, which meant no living in dorms. And I couldn't get an apartment. So I have an aunt and uncle in Florida who offered to help me out. They invited me to come stay with them and I could work at their business and start school here one I qualify for in-state tuition. So that's what I'm doing now, but since I moved to Florida, I never talk to my dad. I'll try to call him but he never answers. When he does answer he's busy and has to go. He never returns my calls or texts. I tried calling and texting him on Christmas, but he never called or texted me back. I sent him a card, never received one. He ended up texting me a week later for New Year's. That was it though, one text. I just want to be close to him again. It almost feels like he's a stranger to me. What even hurts more is that it's like he doesn't care. I have a 23 year old stepbrother that doesn't go to college. He got to live with my father and his mother until he was 22. At that age they ended up buying him a house. I just don't understand why my father doesn't even acknowledge me anymore. And I don't understand how he can buy my stepbrother a house and not even cosign a student loan for me and allow me to become homeless. If it wasn't for my aunt and uncle I would be homeless, and he didn't even care. I had never asked my father for anything until I asked for him to cosign for the loan. Has anybody else gone through something similar? I just want to know how to get close to him again. I just want him to acknowledge me and talk to me every once and awhile. Or at least give me a call on Christmas. I just feel like I'm being pushed away. It's not like my dad's a bad person. He is very nice and used to always be there for me. I just feel like I'm not good enough for him anymore. more

Resolved Question: I want to start a vacation rental business and I need help!!?

I dont know where to start. I have a great idea to start a small vacation rental with the option of very limited personal use... I can buy a condo on South Beach in Miami on Ocean Ave. Estimated cost 300-400K. I think a 500K business loan would be enough. Or maybe a mortgage. I dont have any collateral. My only income is day trading, and on top of that I am basically broke since I could not find a job after college, and in some credit card debt from moving and not working for a few months. I have a college degree in Economics. I live in NYC so my personal rent expenses are high. 1500/mo just for rent. The truth is that if if I charge the regular rate of hotels in South Beach, $400 a night.. I only need about 1000 nights to cover the cost of the condo alone. That would be 3 years if I booked every night so lets say 10 years WORST case scenario. Most mortgages can be 20-40 years leaving me plenty of breathing room to be profitable. I have the marketing tools available to rent this condo out plus South Beach is filled with INTERNATIONAL tourist money.. I NEED HELP on how i can get this done! more

Resolved Question: Have you seen Ron Paul's speech on the floor about the economic crises & the pending world banking reg scheme ?

"Madame Speaker, many Americans are hoping the new administration will solve the economic problems we face. That’s not likely to happen, because the economic advisors to the new President have no more understanding of how to get us out of this mess than previous administrations and Congresses understood how the crisis was brought about in the first place. Except for a rare few, Members of Congress are unaware of Austrian Free Market economics. For the last 80 years, the legislative, judiciary and executive branches of our government have been totally influenced by Keynesian economics. If they had had any understanding of the Austrian economic explanation of the business cycle, they would have never permitted the dangerous bubbles that always lead to painful corrections. Today, a major economic crisis is unfolding. New government programs are started daily, and future plans are being made for even more. All are based on the belief that we’re in this mess because free-market capitalism and sound money failed. The obsession is with more spending, bailouts of bad investments, more debt, and further dollar debasement. Many are saying we need an international answer to our problems with the establishment of a world central bank and a single fiat reserve currency. These suggestions are merely more of the same policies that created our mess and are doomed to fail. At least 90% of the cause for the financial crisis can be laid at the doorstep of the Federal Reserve. It is the manipulation of credit, the money supply, and interest rates that caused the various bubbles to form. Congress added fuel to the fire by various programs and institutions like the Community Reinvestment Act, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, FDIC, and HUD mandates, which were all backed up by aggressive court rulings. The Fed has now doled out close to $2 trillion in subsidized loans to troubled banks and other financial institutions. The Federal Reserve and Treasury constantly brag about the need for “transparency” and “oversight,” but it’s all just talk – they want none of it. They want secrecy while the privileged are rescued at the expense of the middle class. It is unimaginable that Congress could be so derelict in its duty. It does nothing but condone the arrogance of the Fed in its refusal to tell us where the $2 trillion has gone. All Members of Congress and all Americans should be outraged that conditions could deteriorate to this degree. It’s no wonder that a large and growing number of Americans are now demanding an end to the Fed. The Federal Reserve created our problem, yet it manages to gain even more power in the socialization of the entire financial system. The whole bailout process this past year was characterized by no oversight, no limits, no concerns, no understanding, and no common sense. Similar mistakes were made in the 1930s and ushered in the age of the New Deal, the Fair Deal, the Great Society and the supply-siders who convinced conservatives that deficits didn’t really matter after all, since they were anxious to finance a very expensive deficit-financed American empire. All the programs since the Depression were meant to prevent recessions and depressions. Yet all that was done was to plant the seeds of the greatest financial bubble in all history. Because of this lack of understanding, the stage is now set for massive nationalization of the financial system and quite likely the means of production. Although it is obvious that the Keynesians were all wrong and interventionism and central economic planning don’t work, whom are we listening to for advice on getting us out of this mess? Unfortunately, it’s the Keynesians, the socialists, and big-government proponents. Who’s being ignored? The Austrian free-market economists – the very ones who predicted not only the Great Depression, but the calamity we’re dealing with today. If the crisis was predictable and is explainable, why did no one listen? It’s because too many politicians believed that a free lunch was possible and a new economic paradigm had arrived. But we’ve heard that one before – like the philosopher’s stone that could turn lead into gold. Prosperity without work is a dream of the ages. Over and above this are those who understand that political power is controlled by those who control the money supply. Liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats came to believe, as they were taught in our universities, that deficits don’t matter and that Federal Reserve accommodation by monetizing debt is legitimate and never harmful. The truth is otherwise. Central economic planning is always harmful. Inflating the money supply and purposely devaluing the dollar is always painful and dangerous. The policies of big-government proponents are running out of steam. Their policies have failed and will continue to fail. Merely doing more of what caused the crisis can hardly provide a solution. The good news is that Austrian economistDid you know that tomorrow 11/22 is End the Fed day at 39 Federal Reserve branches across the nation? www.endthefed.usSORRY - it cut off - here's the rest: "The good news is that Austrian economists are gaining more acceptance every day and have a greater chance of influencing our future than they’ve had for a long time. The basic problem is that proponents of big government require a central bank in order to surreptitiously pay bills without direct taxation. Printing needed money delays the payment. Raising taxes would reveal the true cost of big government, and the people would revolt. But the piper will be paid, and that’s what this crisis is all about. There are limits. A country cannot forever depend on a central bank to keep the economy afloat and the currency functionable through constant acceleration of money supply growth. Eventually the laws of economics will overrule the politicians, the bureaucrats and the central bankers. The system will fail to respond unless the excess debt and mal-investment is liquidated. If it goes too far and the wild extravagance is not arrested, runaway inflation will result, and an entirely new currency will be required to restore growth and reasonable political stability. The choice we face is ominous: We either accept world-wide authoritarian government holding together a flawed system, OR we restore the principles of the Constitution, limit government power, restore commodity money without a Federal Reserve system, reject world government, and promote the cause of peace by protecting liberty equally for all persons. Freedom is the answer."So which do you want? Virtual world government through control of the global banking system, or a return to the Constitution?http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul494.html more

Resolved Question: 12 Ways to Get Rid of a Telemarketer?

12 Ways to Get Rid of a Telemarketer 1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. Ask, "How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?" 2. If you get one of those pushy people who won't shut up, just listen to their sales pitch. When they try to close the sale, tell them that you'll need to go get your credit card. Then, just set the phone down and go do laundry, shopping or whatever. See how long that commission based scum waits for you to get your credit card. 3. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died...." When they try to get back to the sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems. 4. If the person says he's Joe Doe from the ABC Company, ask him to spell his , then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long as necessary. 5. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Julie and I'm with Dodger & Peck Services.... You: "Hang on a second." (few seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?" 6. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Julie!! Is this really you? I can't believe it! Julie, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Julie a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the heck she could know you from. 7. Say, "No," over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up. 8. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any friends...would you be my friend?" 9. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood - chicken blood too?" 10. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or, "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card number to someone who's a complete stranger. 11. Tell them you work for the same company they work for. Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Widget & Associates." You: "Widget & Associates!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?" Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too? How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya." 12. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers). If the person says, "Well, I don't really want to get a call at home," say, "Yeah! Now you know how I feel." (smiling, of course...)  more
