Consultants seek improvements for South Grand business district

As popular as the South Grand business district is, people like Hamish Bahrami might say it's in spite of South Grand."People drive really crazy. It's not pedestrian friendly," said Bahrami, the owner of the Cafe Natasha Kabob International Restaurant at 3200 S. Grand Blvd.The street - between Arsenal Street and McDonald Avenue - needs more green trees and flowers, Bahrami said."Parking is a big deal," she said. "We don't want them to take the parking away from us."Bahrami was one of the South Grand business people, customers and residents interviewed by consultants from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments as part of an effort to make the section a "great street."Monday night, those consultants showed off three different options for slowing down traffic and improving the environment for pedestrians from Arsenal Street south to McDonald Avenue.Proposals by East-West Gateway planners, engineers and designers are:- Having four lanes with intermittent "bulbouts" in which sidewalks jut out into the street. more

Rollins Agrees to Buy Centex Business

Rollins Inc. said Monday it has agreed to buy Centex Corp.'s pest-control business, HomeTeam Pest Defense, for $137 million.

The exterminator company, which also owns Orkin, PCO Services, Western Pest Services and The Industrial Fumigant Co., expects the deal to close in early April.

Entrepreneurs sweet on downtown Rochester despite sour economy

No one told Cara Vanderbeek that you don't open a new business in the dead of winter.

The 30-year-old Oakland Township resident launched her first venture, East Street Pilates, a block off Main Street in downtown Rochester, in January. A Pilates teacher elsewhere for seven years, many of her clients followed her to her own new studio.

Local business briefs: Tennessee Commerce faces Nasdaq delisting

Franklin-based Tennessee Commerce Bancorp, Inc. said Friday it received a letter from Nasdaq saying it was subject to possible delisting for not filing its annual report on time. The business bank plans to request a hearing before Nasdaq that could take place within the next 45 days.

The $900-million asset bank said two weeks ago it discovered problems with internal controls over its financial reporting and had hired an auditor to look into the issues. It also put its chief financial officer on paid administrative leave but bank officials said they had no reason to believe the deficiencies would impact previously reported results.

Tubing business doing better this year

Sunny skies and warm weather adds up to replenished revenue for outfitters on the rivers.

So far, business is on the rebound in New Braunfels, and that's good news following last year's weather-related wash out.

Some businesses say this weather is exactly what they need to keep sales afloat.

"In the month of March last year I think we had 10 closed days, which we hadn't done in about four or fives years, just because of weather alone," John Bruce with Rockin' R said. "We didn't even make half the business of the year before."

They've paddled through rough waters, and now businesses along the Comal River are floating into a new season that, by all appearances, holds the promise of success.

"Everything's going our way this time," Bruce said. more
