ABC Learning Centres rebrands some facilities

But at least one marketing expert thought ABC's sector prevalence could be driving a move to attract those who do not want to use ABC facilities.

The centres remain ABC-owned but are run by a company with personal business and family ties to ABC chief executive Eddy Groves.

The rebranding, under the name Neighbourhood Early Learning Centres, started a year ago.

Centres operate under NELC procedures with ABC earning a cut of revenue.

ABC said it involved less than 5 per cent of the 1100 Australian centres it owns.

The ABC brand and purple teddy bear logo have become synonymous with child care following the Brisbane-based company's rapid expansion since 2004.

Some parents have told BusinessDaily they find standards at ABC centres very good, while others have questioned its standards. more

Parkville, Riverside enter into marketing agreement with county

Both Parkville and Riverside have entered into a marketing agreement with the Platte County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to try to market the cities to tourists.The city of Weston has also entered into the agreement for marketing services, and Zona Rosa has been offered a spot but has yet to make a decision.Cheryl Thorp, director of the Platte County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, said Parkville, Riverside, Zona Rosa and Weston were chosen because of their marketing strength in the county."I’m looking at the county as a whole and the top four generators of tourism in the county and I want them to have the first chance," she said.The marketing services would last from Aug. 1, 2008, to June 30, 2010, and would cost no more than $19,381.56 for each participant. The Platte County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is estimated to spend about $70,000 in staffing and resources on the project as well, said Thorp.For Parkville’s share, the Parkville Chamber of Commerce and the Parkville Main Street Association have each agreed to pay 25 percent, making the city’s bill for the marketing agreement only $9,690.78.In total, the marketing plan will cost about $187,188.83 for the media coverage planned in different visitor’s guides, travel magazines, trade shows and Web sites. more

I have a villa which is going through foreclosure (since Chase Bank wont approve my deed in lieu - but that's another story)...I'm also trying to open a Professional Organizer business which normally doesn't require too much money to open. Resolved Question: What's a polite way to tell a contractor that I am choosing another for work on my company's facility?

I work for a manufacturer as sort of a building improvement coordinator, which means I'm responsible for coordinating the efforts of contractors and city financing assistance to improve various aspects of the facility. We're talking things like HVAC systems, flooring repairs, exterior/interior wall repairs, etc. I bring in the contractors, get the quotes, and apply for city and state-run programs that provide financial assistance (in the form of loans and reimbursements) for these improvements. I'm not the engineer or the warehouse or production manager, but I am really the only one around here who gets how to work with the government to partially subsidize these projects. So I'm not too familiar with working with contractors. As part of the application process for some of these grants, I had to bring in three different contractors to provide estimates for the work to be done, and because of some deadlines and I needed them in a hurry. I've decided who I want to work with, and barring any disagreements between me and my boss, I want to call him and start coordinating on the work. What do I tell the other contractors? I mostly feel awkward about it because they all kind of rushed out to do the estimates at my behest. They are aware that we were looking towards other contractors, both so that we could secure competitive bids and because the programs I mentioned require multiple bids for the same projects; but is it ok to leave the unselected contractors hanging? Part of me says yes, they're used to that and it's just part of running a general contracting business. But I feel like I owe them at least a phone call because we were on a deadline and they went out of their way. Or maybe they didn't go out of their way and they're used to that too. I have no idea! I believe he is not a socialist and I'll give 10 reasons why he is not. 1) Obama proposes tax cuts on the middle class, not redistributions of wealth. This means Middle class workers have to work for bosses X number of hours to reap the benefits of his proposals, it's not a socialist handout. 2) Socialists redistribute wealth unconditionally, Obama does not.Of all Obama's stimulus packages, not one of them was as nutty as Bush's giving every employee 600 dollars as a handout. In fact, Obama's recovery act money is not without clear criteria for how every dollar is to be spent. 3) Obama's healthcare plan does not even have a public option, enough said. You keep your health plan, you don't pay a fine either. Sounds quite private to me. 4) Obama did not use the Government to propose and control the solution to the BP oil spill, he rightfully gave BP the resources it needed to do the repair work. This is hardly a socialist solution, and maybe should have been more of one, Govt didn't involve itself enough in the issue. 5) Obama passed the HIRE act recently, which proposes additional taxcuts for businesses that hire additional workers, now this is a capitalist way to handle the problem. Clearly he's not FORCING businesses to give up money to workers, but allowing them to consider the decision under new economic circumstances. A socialist would TAKE money from these businesses and give it to unemployed. 6) Obama's continuance of his predecessor's TARP (Troubled Assets Relief Program) allows the Government to buy up assets of failing companies, but these are LOANS, not giveaway grants. This is Govt engaging in business, not taking business away. 7) You can take every president since Roosevelt until Reagan and call them socialists, because the individual taxrate at the highest bracket had been 70% of income, or even 91% in the 1950s. Nobody complained then. Obama hasn't even proposed a tax hike beyond letting the existing taxcuts expire. 8) Obama's recent choice for Supreme Court justice Kagan is CLEARLY centrist and a shoe-in by both Republicans and Democrats. 9) Obama has kept the US military separated from the Domestic scene, continuing under the same leadership as his predecessor. A socialist would take full control of the military. 10) I see absolutely no regulation of the Internet whatsoever, probably the most crucial mechanism of imposing socialism would be to use media to do this. The last time i checked, we have private enterprise running TV, radio, internet unblocked... Voting Question: Does American actually operate under free-market principles, or socialism?

In America, there is the Federal Reserve who uses the tool of changing interest rates on loans it makes to private banks in the American economy. The prime rate you often here is the rate at which the cost of borrowing from the Federal Reserve is charged to the banks and in turn, the banks will pass the cost of borrowing to their customers who are mostly made up of private businesses in the market place. This control or lever that the Federal Reserve uses, is for the purpose of controlling the proper economic climate so that private businesses can thrive. If the interest rate is too high, it can have the affect of slowing down the economy, if the interest rate is low, it can have the affect of growing the economy or increasing productivity in the economy. I do not here anybody accusing the Federal government who either increases or decreases the interest rate to control its economic activity as “manipulating” its currency for the desired affect. But folks, that is exactly what the Americans are doing. They are “manipulating” the desired affect. Americans are guilty of what it accuses China, only that the Americans uses different words. Instead of the word “manipulation” as it uses against China, the Americans use the word “monetary policy”. If you can use your critical thinking skills, you can see, Americans are hypocrites when they make the argument against China about “manipulating” its currency. It is monetary policy that any sovereign government has the right to do. Next. Lets talk about the phony free-markets that the Americans espouse that they practice in their private businesses. One example to show you that Americans do not practice free-market competition is in the pharmaceutical industry. This industry has lobbied congress to write laws whereby it is illegal for American citizens to buy prescription drugs from other countries. Drugs from Canada is a fraction of the cost of drugs sold in America. But it is illegal to buy drugs from Canada if you are an American citizen. Another example of American companies that preach free-market capitalism and don’t practice it is the big agriculture businesses in America. One company such as Monsanto is a good example. They grow a single crop, corn. The term monoculture is used to describe a farm that grows only a single crop. That is what Monsanto does. It sells genetically modified corn seeds to farms and has its own farms that grow it. There product is sold around the world. Monsanto’s lobbiest has persuaded congress to pass laws that favor their business. They get huge subsidies to grow a single crop, the more they grow, the more subsidies they get, and this has changed the competitiveness of its leverage to compete in the world. If they did not get any of the subsidies paid by each taxpayer in America, they would not be in business and would not be able to compete in the world market. If it was not for the government to step in and grant billion dollars of subsidies, Monsanto would not be a viable company to compete in the world. Now, this example does not suggest that they operate under free-market principles with their own bootstraps as they preach so much in American culture. And if we use the same words that the Americans use against China, we can say, the American government is “manipulating” free-market principles and “manipulating” private companies to help them compete against foreign companies. Now if you are going to accuse someone, make sure your own hands are clean in regards to the same accusation you make against other countries. Otherwise you lose credibility and show yourself as a hypocrite and a dummy. Certainly, Americans and their government is guilty of this. Just pointing this out to you people who fall into this camp, and there are a lot of you, if not most in your phony country. Remember America is not what you say you are. The American dream is just that, an illusion built on false premises. All the lofty talk about the good values of Americans is just a façade to cover up its decadence, its hypocrisy, its lies, and its power hungry bullying self centered insecurities. USA is not that golden nugget in a vast sea of darkness, instead it is an mirage of an oasis out in the dessert, those that are thirsty for water gravitate towards it, and when they see the mirage up close, they will learn that its all an illusion, nothing it says or appears is for real. Voting Question: Where can I find grant information?

I want to start a nonprofit organization that helps the community with needs both basic and not basic. What my nonprofit will do includes but not limited to the following. - Affordable if not free day care for working parents. - Temporary housing for displaced workers in need of help getting back on their feet. - Employment search and acquisition aid through working with local businesses - Help get people get enrolled in college or trade school. What will be required of those who take advantage of the temporary housing. - Residents will have to give back to the community that is helping them by doing volunteer work that helps the community. - Help operate the day care center. - Help each other through internal and external networking. The goal of this nonprofit is to get the US citizens back on track. Get them to learn that we are the UNITED States, not the INDEPENDENT States of America. Get them to help and rely upon each other instead of the government for help. Get them to be able to be relied upon by those in need. Help them understand that everyone has times of need and that it is up to the community to ensure that no one is forgotten about. Teach them to be independent from state and federal government programs but not separate from their communities. Finally, to give them the ABILITY to be completely independent, but the willingness and desire to help build an interdependent nation of citizens that can and would survive regardless of the governments actions, regardless of what companies appear in Forbes magazine, regardless of what corporation is currently bending the ear of our so called representatives in Washington. I want my fellow US citizens to come to the conclusion and understanding, regardless of race or religion, that our fellow US citizens are not our enemies. That we cannot continue the partisan bickering amongst ourselves and expect to survive. That we must stop placing blame on each other and start building each other up into the great country we all claim to be. My problem is this. I don't know where to begin. I am looking for NON GOVERNMENT grant and loan information so that I can begin looking for help funding this non profit organization. Yes, I will have to abide by the law, and I will do so willingly. The media lets us know about everything else, such as rape, murders and crazy ish that happens daily and is nothing new in our society. Yesterday night I went into the store and my mom bought 3 deli sandwiches. Now if you're a New Englander like me than you will know we have alot of Hindus, Muslims, Arabs and whatever in these deli stores, subways, gas stations, dunkin donuts, etc etc. Now, okay so we check them out at the cashier. Of course they're Arabs, Pakis or whatever the hell they are, I can't tell them apart, they're all Islamic and that's all that matters, but anyways my mom asked if that was his father (A young Arab and Old Arab man behind the counter), he said no that's his Uncle. But then we get checked out come to find out the whole thing was BULL and the sandwiches were expensive. Now we don't mind since we treat ourselves, but GUESS WHAT, the taxes on the 3 sandwiches was $1. My mom was PISSED, it's not we can't afford $1 but the LAW is 6%, okay and we bought a soda, too. This Arab thinks because we're Americans that we are stupid and don't pay attention, and they rip us off. It's no secret, (me growing up around Arabs). Now, he ringed that up, so still who charges $1? That's actually illegal, like I said, it's not we can't afford $1, but it's a shame how these n a s t y muslims come into our country, BOMB us, then turn around and rip us off. Very little people know about what they do, they don't run their mouth. Anyways, we go back and ask for the change, and that you only charge 6 percent in taxes, right? Well the Indian or whatever he was guy got an attitude and said, no. We went back to the car, took our caculator on the phone and did the math and come to find out he did rip us off big time, so we went back and the guy left so his "nephew" gave us our change and laughed. I've finished my AA and will be transferring this fall to another university to complete my BA in either Middle East Studies or International Relations. I've been accepted to two schools but I have no idea which one to choose. Option 1: I have a scholarship to my local university in FL which would cover all of my tuition and my family and I would pay the rest of my school expenses and my housing off campus, which wouldn't be too much of a problem. Option 2: I would pay all out of pocket for two years spent at the American University in Cairo. That's about $35,000-40,000. I would be taking out loans to cover most of the cost. However, I haven't completely lost my mind. I am hoping to land a job at a business or government position and hope that having the experience of living in a middle eastern country would grant me better opportunities in my chosen field. I would also have first hand experience living in the middle east and would have also learned the language and the culture. I would also not have to pay for housing. I haven't been able to find any information from past graduates and I am just curious if the degree is worth the amount of money? And if a degree from the AUC is prestigious or if it doesn't compare to a US university degree? I'm 20 years old and thinking about opening a jewelry/accessory store in my town. Resolved Question: What, ideally or practically, is the cost to create a job that will last between 1-3 years, public or private?

What is the average cost to create a job that will be viable for a year, or employment which will remain viable for years to come? I understand that the cost may range depending on the type of position, from an IT worker to an engineer to a laborer, but what are the most prominent factors to be considered? It seems that 30% of low income workers are unemployed, while even during the great depression managers and employers were affected more equally by the economy, and those low income workers generally lack the skills to make as quick of a rebound as the high income workers did during this recession. With this very important statistic taken into account, what would the best solution to undertake? I'm wondering this as various types of legislation are passed, and I hear the right disingenuously moaning about the deficit being inflated while the government attempts to create jobs which will lower unemployment and in turn create demand for businesses that regain their customers and obviate the need for government assistance. (A 15 billion dollar jobs bill IS larger than a 85 billion dollar jobs bill, right? Apparently the cost of bipartisanship is 70 billion in special interest re-election money, minus the additional unemployment funding and such which would've been added) I can understand the argument against creating government jobs, which are created with government funding and return a small portion to the government in the form of taxes; but also create more immediate employment, albeit less efficiently. Is there any unseen benefit in having government jobs, aside from providing their designated service? Or is it a fiscal black hole? Also, is the cost creating jobs in the private sector roughly equivalent of creating public jobs? I also wonder, what is the "best" way to create jobs in the private sector? To my understanding, small businesses, not large transnational corporations, create 60%-70%+ of employment within the country. I don't advocate relying on dispensing targeted grants, as they'd be derived from borrowed money in a non-"deficit-neutral" manner , but wouldn't strengthening the SBA and securing prudent loans to small businesses to allow them to grow (which I know are risky, hence why banks are hesitant to lend to them) be the most pragmatic solution with perhaps tax incentives for those and more developed small businesses to hire and expand? more

Voting Question: I chose the wrong major when I started college. I have the right major now. How do I start over?

I am currently at my fourth university. I have majored in two different fields (aviation & political science) and minored in three different fields (business, psychology, & philosophy). Originally I had passion in all of these subjects. The more I became specialized in each field the more I resented the field. I guess I just had romantic ideas about what could be accomplished with a chosen field of endeavor and then I was struck with the reality of how businesses and job markets are shaping my educational pursuit. Anyway, I have always been a talented musician, but up until last semester I never considered training to become a professional. The great thing is the more I become specialized in this field the more I truly grow to enjoy and respect the field. There is no doubt that this is where I belong, but it took me along time to get here and now I have $26,000 in student loans and just about 150 credit hours on my record. When I reach 150 credit hours I will no longer be able to recieve the pell grant or any other government grant for that matter (at least to my knowledge). The only debt I have to my name is student loans, I started investing money about a year ago and I have $4,000 in securities. That's basically my position. I have a passion but I don't have the means to pursue it. I have set goals, for instance, I would like to have my B.M. by 2015 and my Doctorate of Music by 2020. I have no money but have been painting for about 10 years. I have about a hundred paintings now. My husband and I are closing on our first house next Friday. We moved in prior to close because the seller had a block where he couldn't close for 90 days. It was between us and another offer he had, but we were willing to move in 3 months early and rent from him until closing so he wasn't losing money, so he went with us. We moved in December 15th, and we have had issues with the house since. We have fixed these issues and the house is running in good shape. One of the biggest issues we had was the sewage kept backing up into the basement, so we had the line snaked and it STILL was backing up, so we paid for a camera to inspect our line, and found out we needed and ENTIRE new sewage line. We told the seller to fix it or we backed out of the sale, and he fixed it. It was $7,000 and we have a new sewage system, for free. Now, we are using a government grant for our loan, of $5,000. Because of this grant, we only needed 1% down at closing, and that is all we have. However, we just found out yesterday that because I own my own business, they are canceling our grant. Apparently our mortgage broker has been fighting with them for a week and a half and finally the actual DIRECTOR called her and said enough is enough. It's done. So basically, we need 3.5% down now -- we need to come up with $5,500 by next Friday or we lose our mortgage. We only have $2,100. We can get the money from family, but now my husband is worrying if everything that has gone wrong is an omen or a sign that we should just back out of the sale. He thinks it's too big of a risk. The thing is, ANY house is a risk, something can go wrong anywhere. Now the other thing that is an issue is if we back out of the house and have to move, I will probably lose my business which I've been successfully running for over 2 years now, and have to find another job. If I'm not working, we can't afford our mortgage so basically if we move, I will *HAVE* to find another job or we are screwed. Would you back out of the sale, or would you dive in and go for it? P.S. -- the contract we signed with the seller protects us if we back out of the sale. Voting Question: Applying for Canadian Government Student Loans for UK school?

I am having a hard time finding solid information as to how much I could expect to receive. I am also looking for information as to what the Canadian Government need from me while I am in the UK applying for the loan. I am still studying in Canada at this moment finishing a diploma course in accounting and business. I am still in the process of applying for my Perspective Student Visa. But I want to have everything in order for all the steps I need to take to be a student in the UK. I want to be able to apply for my Student Visa while I am in the UK. I would like to avoid the extra expense of having to fly back to Canada then return to the UK just because I forgot to “dot an i or cross a t”, if that is at all possible. I want to study in Wales. I am not sure if I will be accepted to a University or have to do some schooling at a college my first year or two in the UK. 1)Is the amount that the Canadian student loans site says is per week, 350CND I believe, also meant to cover a persons’ tuition? Or is that a completely separate amount? I have looked at my past Student Loans and it seems that there are a couple separate amounts. The living amount, grants and tuition. The school admissions advisor handles all of the paper work and deals with student loans, so I have to learn all of this now. a)Is this weekly amount for living expenses? b)What is the maximum amount for tuition and fees? c)Do they take into account that students are in another country with different economies? Or is it still calculated from where the student is from? 2)I have read that if you are an independent student away from home there is a higher amount you can receive. Is this true? 3)What is the document that a student needs to show the UK that they are eligible to receive funding from Canada student loans, before they actually receive the loan? I believe that I will need to show documentation that I can receive the loan and that the Canadian Government is my sponsor for schooling in the UK. I am a "minority" and I want to take advantage of the government business loans/grants that they seem to like to give out to people. I face two problems however; first being that I have poor credit, no capital or collateral; the second being that my business idea is adult originated and somewhat controversial; in fact I believe the only place I could run it without sticky legal laws getting in the way would be Reno. However; my idea is original and hasn't been done before; it would generate anywhere from 50-100 or more stable and safe jobs; and I think the idea could make a lot of money if it catches on; which would allow me to expand and open even more jobs. With the economy the way it is these days; is the government still giving out small business loans and grants; would they loan to someone who creditors consider a "moderate risk"; would they loan to someone who's business idea is somewhat controversial (depnding on who you ask)? more

Voting Question: What effect will opening a business have on personal credit?

I understand that business credit is different than personal and that at first many entrepreneurs personal credit is their business credit at first or at least the basis thereof. My question is, if you open a business is there any effect on your personal credit score? The reason for the inquiry is my personal credit score is decent about 700 but is falling because of a high debt ratio. So, because of the high debt ratio, lately no credit cards will touch me and what I want to do is transfer to an introductory rate to get out of high interest debt. I am able to pay all of my minimum balances plus 100 percent each month but I am of limited income from disability but get $26,000 a year for grants for Grda school each year, $10000 of which is government sub loans. So what is happening is I get the installments twice a year. I immediately pay down all of my cards ranging from $1,000 payment to $4000. My total debt is about $20,000 and most happened prior to my disability. Nearly all of my Grad school grants and loans are going to my credit cards and by the end of a semester I am out of funds from supporting my wife and son and myself. So, I use the credit cards I originally tried to pay down at the beginning of the semester and the whole thing cycles again. What should I do, bankruptcy? I really feel a moral obligation to pay off my debt, I spent the money and that is my responsibility. The problem is that because my debt ratio is so high and I constantly teeter on the limits of my cards I get hit with crazy rates. The last one was a raise from 5.9 percent to 15 percent and 32 months later a raise to 29.9 percent from Citibank. I think that with the upcoming laws the credit card companies are trying to lock me into these high rates and since my situation is that of a stressed borrower they immediately hit my account with any raises. That was really long winded. The 2 questions I have are will opening a business help my personal credit and can I freeze my credit card APR's or cards because of becoming "permanently" disabled in the span of accruing interest about 2 years ago. Any advice would be really appreciated, I''m really stressed out and trying to support my family while going to grad school and on disability all the while making the maximum amount allowed to stay on disability per month, $900.00.
