Picking the Best Franchises (And Avoiding the Worst)
And Entrepreneur magazine compiles annual lists if Top 10 franchises in multiple categories, such as the best home-based, best low-cost, and best new — based on growth, litigation and other factors.
Another approach is to use a search engine and blogs to learn about the litigation that franchise systems may be facing and what disenchanted franchisees are saying about their franchiser. This recent post about Cold Stone Creamery here is one example. FranchiseLawBlog.com lists class actions in progress. And FranchisePundit.com occasionally highlights the stories of unhappy franchisees, like this one from Subway.
Whats are other good franchise blogs? What are some of the best and worst franchise experiences youve heard of — and how could they have been avoided?

Taking Stock Of Tech Startups In Paris
In some ways, being an entrepreneur in Paris is like being an entrepreneur anywhere. The odds are against you, nothing comes easily, and most people think you are crazy. It???s harder to be an entrepreneur in Paris than it is in Silicon Valley. It also seems harder than NYC or many cities in the US. And I suspect it???s harder than London as well.
Entrepreneurship is a French word and modern day venture capital was invented by a Frenchman named George Doriot. If you don???t know about Doriot, you haven???t been reading this blog recently. But even though the French have a historical connection to entrepreneurship and venture capital, the French economy and society doesn???t seem to be particularly supportive of entrepreneurship.
It starts with the economics of being an entrepreneur. more

Here is my thought: 1. The President appoints former public officials, doctors, insured and uninsured people and former insurance company leaders. Maybe 5 democrats, 5 republicans, 5 doctors, 5 insured people, 5 uninsured people, 5 former insurance company executives and a professional facilitating company to lead meetings and sessions. 2. Identify the main problems with the current system and come up with potential solutions. Use problem solving methods like LEAN or Kaizen, or Kempner Trago like thousands of successful businesses do today. 3. Go out to town hall meetings (committee members) in different regions, and get input for local people to add to the bank of knowledge. (not yelling or screaming or anything like we have seen) 4. Bring the findings and a few simple, detailed solutions to the major issues to congress. Then we will truly have a bipartisan solution, with input for the American people. moreResolved Question: What is your opinion here Almighty Latin King & Queen Nation Gunning down people in our streets and?
What is your opinion here Almighty Latin King & Queen Nation Gunning down people in our streets and distributing illegal drugs throughout our communities ?WASHINGTON, Feb 24, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ---- The leader of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (ALKQN) in Texas and one of his enforcers were found guilty this afternoon on multiple charges related to their participation in a large scale narcotics and firearms trafficking conspiracy, announced Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division Lanny A. Breuer and U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas. Specifically, the two men were found guilty for their roles in the May 4, 2008, murders of a pregnant female and another bystander. "Gunning down people in our streets and distributing illegal drugs throughout our communities, these gangs spread violence and addiction wherever they go," said Assistant Attorney General Breuer. "We will not allow their repugnant acts to go unpunished. Today, a jury of Texas citizens sent a message loud and clear to would-be gang members -- we can and we will hold you accountable for your crimes." "For more than a week, this jury listened to testimony concerning the movement of a large amount of drugs and guns throughout the state of Texas by members of the Latin Kings criminal organization," said James T. Jacks, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. "Not only did this gang pollute the streets of Texas with dangerous drugs, as a result of their heinous actions, two adults, one of whom was pregnant, were brutally murdered with an assault rifle. We are proud that we, along with the hard-working members of the agencies that contributed to this investigation, have brought civilized justice to otherwise uncivilized gang wars. This office is proud to have assisted the Department of Justice's Gang Unit in the successful prosecution of these criminals." Jose Robledo Nava, aka "Chino," 31, of Lubbock, Texas, and James Johnathan Cole, aka "Blitz," 19, of Lamesa, Texas, were each found guilty by a federal jury in Lubbock on two counts of using a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, and one count of a conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and 100 kilograms or more of marijuana. But the fact of the matter is the scientist lied. moreResolved Question: Isn't a matter that was duly reported to the UN re: the creation 1 million extra ballots a more feasible item?
than this attempt to explain away the inexplicable? http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2010/01/explaining-mahindas-landslide-victory.html The exact text of the Election Commissioner's statement also explains his position of utter dismay in government actions to suppress his powers under the 17th Amendment - which is also the consolidation point of both majority and minority voters. The photographic evidence of Rajapaksa family members partying with LTTE elements in foreign countries whilst people at home are denied even rudimentary voting rights and 26,000 military perished in Eelam War 4 make this a very unsatisfactory distortion of democratic process. When even the Election Day functions are sullied by early morning explosions and bombings by Rajapaksa led military, the entire 17th amendment initiative scrapped by a string of terrorist attacks on police stations and training facilities (when there is a clear LTTE/Rajapaksa family affiliation) there is no option other than stepping down from office or Repolling with international election experts running the operations. The harassment of Swiss press by The Rajapaksa administration may also effect India's position negatively as India in its hegemonic desires that gave birth, supported, trained and financed the LTTE for the past 30+ years also happens to get itself positioned in an Election day controversy where the Rajapaksas depart "unexpectedly" to New Delhi and a string of explosions over Sri Lanka waterways is mimicked by an exactly strange occurrence in the Koreas when lo and behold the chief guest for India's promotional act of independence is none other that the president of South Korea. Indian Political pundits can announce this "landslide" as a manna falling from heaven but the reality is that there is nothing miraculous about cheating and to have such audacity as denying Fonseka even his own franchise, utilizing state media (which had already been reported to be 90+% monopolized by Rajapaksa) tasking utilizing former lieutenant Gothabaya Rajapaksa (who went from ret'dlieutenantt directly to head of military) denying a four star General that led the war effort sans the LTTE last days atVannii (as Fonseka was in China on business during that juncture) makes Fonseka the architect andadministratorr of a very successful war and hostage rescue operation and makes the Rajapaksa Brothers the responsible parties for those last events at the Vanni - not the military, not the security apparatus, not the country but the Rakapaksas. Gothabaya Rajapaksa being a US citizen is fully accountable not to India but to the USA for these pre/post election violences, the disruption of the elections process on morning of elections, he is also responsible for the intake of military deserters (so if there were any placed in Fonseka's detail they also would be coming from the Rajapaksas, just as the attempt to insert SB Dissanayake as Opposition Leader (Rajapaksa first cousin) and the fraudulent attempt for this Indian pundit to refer to SLFP as Rajapaksa's party when in actuality he is in UPFA is just more Indian parsing for India getting caught once again red-handed in supporting illegal political activity ( which in this case is diminutive form of terrorism on the Citizen's franchise) a matter that requires the immediate curtailment of any further hegemonic advances of India. Gothabaya Rajapaksa was recused from further arms purchases after the M. Rajapaksa declared "end of war" and even his brother the current president agreed with this move. With huge contingents of security details for Rajapaksa family members there can not be guarantee if military deserters were somehow overlooked and placed into Fonseka detail by Gothabaya Rajapaksa that these same kinds of Rajapaksa "mistakes" haven't occured in others. But there is no explicable error in Rajapaksa's continual chumminess with certain LTTE elements, thugs, traffickers that has now trickled down to his own son. When we have state organizations that have performed outstandingly in efforts to incorporate the 17th amendment and a US citizen of questionable repute completely circumventing the constitutional process as well as sending repetetive threats to political leaders over wire services these acts must be duly reported not just to Sri Lanka government and military but also US. As for India who has always tried to foist its proverbial "Big Toe" of extermist elements at neighbours we say before you try and develop or culturalize Sri Lanka clean up and develop your own country. If India (which undoubtably does) have a hand in removing Swiss press or any other Swiss service from Sri Lanka then they are in direct contravention of internationally accepted protocols of the import of nuetral party involvements that were placed and approved by many including myself at Mannar. India's persistent meddling and encroachment has once again backfired. I'm only asking this because I've come across a few people who believe that real life issues used as angles and feuds are entertaining and successful. Which brings me to my questions: Does a feud that consists of past or current real life issues (between wrestlers) hurt or help the credibility of the wrestler and the company (that they respectively work for)? Also, are angles that use real life issues (past or current references of certain wrestlers) always successful, in terms of the business? Lastly, which angles based off real life conflicts should be used over the other: a wrestler's past/present conflict with life (i.e.: Jeff Hardy, MVP and etc) or a wrestler's past/present conflict with another wrestler (i.e.: Shawn, Bret and Vince -- Edge and Matt, etc)? If you're against promotions using real life conflicts and using it in their product, then feel free to say so and explain. I'm aware that most wrestlers are past their conflicts, but I'm only asking this for the sake of asking a question. I -- What exactly was the purpose for the Royal Rumble match from 1988 - 1991? Should you feel like answering, please read the entire question. It is meant to provoke some thought. I have listened to many economists that share the same question. The federal government's ability to borrow money at a reasonable interest rate, just over 4% right now for them, is not going away any time soon. In the middle of an economic recession, it is the government's role to spend our way out of it. Consumers aren't spending money, businesses aren't spending money...so the government has to, otherwise there will not be any growth. This is a concensus by many economists, they are not dumb people. It's not going to cause taxes to go up, in fact, if they are successful in getting more jobs for everyone, their tax revenue will go up simply by the fact that more people are working. Therefore, the deficit will work out itself in the long run. It seems more people are concerned about the short run height of the deficit, and do not realize that the deficit being raise by economic recovery is justified, and certainly people would realize that spending money to help people is more justified than spending money fighting wars. As Republican President Ronald Reagan once said "I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself." When did it become that ordinary citizens have this fear about the deficit, when the only people that should be worrying about the deficit is congressional leaders. I fear this is a burden that republican leaders have tried sharing with common people when it shouldn't be their burden to bare. Wouldn't people rather have a high deficit and more jobs or a smaller deficit and a continued economic crisis? I guess anyone favoring the latter could be assumed to already have a job and having no empathy or compassion to those struck hardest by this economy. But the government is not an average household, it is the government, and such a comparison does not hold water. If you think the government should be held to the same constraints as an individual, then you don't understand the role of government. moreResolved Question: I don't have time and I need help !?

IV- JEREMIAH, A key to success. Nothing happens unless first we dream. Dreams are the touchstones of our characters. We’re the IV- Jeremiah living in a dream that we want to achieve, we want to be successful in life so that we can prove to other people that this attitude will change, we all have talents but so shy to show it off, we just started showing it and will continue it through the years. Memorizing thousands—no, millions—of dates or names for each battle and learning about one country conquering the next was my idea of wasted brain space. But the one thing that made war history somewhat appealing was the individual story of each general, captain, colonel, or lieutenant who led their men into battle. Their capabilities, their commands and, particularly, their victories and failures reveal exactly what kind of leader they are. That is why I chose to write about a leader from South Korean war history. I did not learn about him at school or from my parents, a documentary, or a biography. I learned about him through an 81- episode drama. Of course, this means that the facts I do know of him are not facts; they have probably been embellished for the media. He is not the actual historical figure. He is the one on my television screen on channel 18.3. He is the man for whom the drama is named: Jumong. Born as the son of a king’s concubine, Jumong grew up in a rivalry for the crown between his two older step brothers. Although he had never coveted for the throne, his brothers label him as a threat and try to murder him. Naturally, his brothers fall into corruption and deceit while Jumong fights to save his people from their enemy, the Han nation. He succeeds in freeing his oppressed people and finally ends up establishing his own kingdom of Goguryeo. Doesn’t it sound like some fairy tale involving a lost glass slipper that we all know and love? Yet, this simple fairy tale-like concept is transformed into a story of bravery and leadership. In nearly every episode of Jumong, the director uses war scenes to emphasize Jumong’s remarkable archery skill or his brilliance in developing strategies and predicting the enemy’s every move. However, I noticed something about this leader that could not be directly written into the script. Extraordinary relationships were forming between Jumong and his men, progressing through each battle they fought together and every stubborn obstacle they demolished. His men revered him with an emotion stronger than love and bestowed upon him their complete devotion. Jumong discovered each man’s potential, and entrusted him with a task. Every task was essential to help Jumong realize his greater goal of establishing a nation that lasted for hundreds of years in Korean history. He changed his soldiers’ lives individually by cultivating their talents into necessary skills, influencing several soldiers to become leaders themselves—he transformed three common criminals into generals of war. He valued their lives and talents. CMC is a breeding ground for leaders like Jumong, people who want to take control of their destiny and improve the lives of others. It is a place that can see the potential in people and nurture them to become successful leaders of their own. And just like Jumong changed culture and thought, so will I. moreVoting Question: Does my letter of motivation looks strong enough or does it need any changes?

While our attention was being diverted by the health care reform commotion, the Democrats in Congress have been back to forming bipartisan deals like the one that led to the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley banking deregulation act, which repealed the Depression era Glass-Steagal act and led directly to the financial meltdown of 2008. They want to extend the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley banking deregulation act for the rest of the financial sector. They decided that banking deregulation was so successful at melting down the banks, they want to melt down the rest of the financial sector the same way. "The legislation still imposes restrictions on derivatives, aiming to prevent manipulation in and bring transparency to a $600 trillion global market. An amendment by New York Democrat Scott Murphy, adopted 304-124 Thursday night, exempted businesses that trade in derivatives, not as financial speculators, but to hedge against market fluctuations such as currency rates or gasoline prices. The amendment also provided an exception for businesses that are not considered too big to be a risk to the financial system. Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson (born 18 July 1950) is an English industrialist, best known for his Virgin brand of over 360 companies. Branson's first successful business venture was at age 16, when he published a magazine called Student. He then set up an audio record mail-order business in 1970. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores. In the late 1990s, Branson and musician Peter Gabriel discussed with Nelson Mandela their idea of a small, dedicated group of leaders, working objectively and without any vested personal interest to solve difficult global conflicts. n June 2006, a tip-off from Virgin Atlantic led US and UK competition authorities to investigate price-fixing attempts between Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. In August 2007, British Airways was fined £271 million over the allegations. Virgin Atlantic was given immunity for tipping off the authorities and received no fine - a controversial decision the Office of Fair Trading defended as being in the public interest. Branson had poor academic records which contrasted with excellent performance in sports, especially swimming. Sir Richard also wanted to run the National Lottery at no cost to benefit the people but was rejected, would you like this man to run your country if he was American? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/1078341.stm moreVoting Question: criminology????????????????????????????????????
The card was returned to the wallet and booked into property at the Mariposa County Jail with the clothing of Rodriguez. You are a sworn peace officer with the Fresno Police Department, and a designated member of the Multi-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Force. You have been assigned to the Narcotics Division for the last ten years. On July 3, you were called by the jailer in Mariposa County whose attention had been directed to the business card by the Park Ranger who made the arrest. You immediately recognized the name on the card as belonging to the chief assistant, go-for, and right hand man of Fresno Attorney D. Lawrence Manning. Manning is the most notable criminal defense attorney in Fresno’s history, and has attained a national reputation as a result of his successful representation of Arnaldo Alfonso Felix, the brother of a Mexican cartel leader arrested in San Diego several years ago. You have long suspected that Mendoza serves as a “capper” for his boss, bringing him clients and related income. Although you have no proof of an association, the lavish lifestyle led by Manning and Mendoza have led you to believe that they are somehow involved in the drug trade. On July 5, you decide to travel to Mariposa County to interview Ibanez and Rodriguez. Before conducting the interview, you visited the property room at the jail, and inspected the items taken from the two men. Among the items obtained from Ibanez was a small leather-bound diary. You opened it and read the contents. There was a reference to the date that he was hired to tend the marijuana plants, and a notation that he was to receive “$5,000 at the time of the harvest.” You looked at the card from Rodriguez’ wallet and turned it over. In handwriting were the words, “Don’t tell the cops nothing, call DLM – 786-5439.” The phone number is an unlisted number for the office of attorney Manning. 1.True orFalseYou had the right to read the diary belonging to Ibanez as a lawful incident to his arrest. 2.TFYou had the right to inspect the business card in the wallet of Rodriguez. 3.The authority for your actions with regard to the business card result from the decision of the United States Supreme Court in which of the following decisions: A.Terry v Ohio B.United States v Edwards C.Chimel v California D.Olmstead v United States moreVoting Question: plantar fasciitis from work what is this case worth?
i began working on this job as a temp emp.. when i got there i notice how easy it was to move up in this business and how equal oppt. plays a roll in the company. I was told with a lil hard work i could easily get hired on permentally and move up in the company but there was some there that has been there on temp for 2 or 3 years. they put me in one of the worse position in the building,it was too building hugh boxes. It was a requirement to get 4 boxes in a 10 hr period. after i learned the job i showed them a strategy on how to get more boxes done. it worked but it was hard work. so they hired me on permentaly with in 7 mo. they move me to night shift to get the same thing done with the night shift crew and it was successful also. with both shift doing 7 to 8 boxes thats 15 to 16 boxes a day we ran out of work to the point to where we only needed 1 shift. my seniority wasnt there so they moved me to another department the other one that no one wanted to do. installing radiators. there THEY were only doing 2 or 2.5 units a day. to make along story short when i got thru with my strategy i was doing 5 a day by myself and 7 with two other helpers. this cause me to have to do a lot of climbing and forceful walking. my heels started hurting real bad when i would go on break and especially when i wake up in the mornings. I told my team leader and he said that auggh its just a heel spur. but he didnt report it. so i told him that i was going to the doctor and he said to let him no what the doctor say. i was diagnosis with bi-lateral plantar fasciitis with severe lower extremeties. i have seen a total of 5 doctors that stated and charted that it was job related. so my employer sent me to have ime. the company doctor stated that i do have the injury but it didnt come from the job. but he stated in his notes that he didnt think that i could work on hard surfaces for a prolonged perion of time. so my atty ask if he think that the surface at my job aggravated my condition. the company doctor answered and said that walking is a part of life. and that it didnt come from the job. 5 doctors said yes it did and 1 the company doc said it didnt. what would you do in this situation? moreResolved Question: If you're accepted into an Ivy League school, do you essentially win life?
More specifically if you earn any sort of degree from any Ivy League institution, especially Harvard University, are you guaranteed success for your life to follow? If you take a look at alumni from these top notch prestigious universities, you will notice that a vast majority of them serve as world leaders, child prodigies, elite computer programmers (whether it was Microsoft or facebook), world famous business entrepreneurs (the apprentice), influential book writers, overwhelmingly talented actors, highly respected doctors, CEO's of both yours and my favorite television networks, hilarious talk show hosts and quite frankly extraordinary people. And if they're not one of those, the rest become generally successful people, regardless of their global recognition. So my question is, if you successfully earn your degree in whatever it is you decide to concentrate on from any of these top tier schools, are all the doors open? Have you in fact won life? moreResolved Question: Why is politics so extreme?
I guess what I am trying to ask is: Why must it be this way or that way. I am conservative, but I have zero tolerance for racism. I also believe in protecting the environment. I mean what could would it do to be successful in a world which is inhabitable? Yet I have been told by some that I am not a true conservative because I believe in protecting the environment. I hope that some day we can find a solution to the issues with the environment without hurting businesses. And I believe it can be done. Furthermore, must I hate Barrack Obama to be a true conservative? I do not support his policies, but that doesn't mean I should hate him does it? I always thought that diversity was what this country stood for. Now when they go to changing the constitution, and promoting socialism we will have a serious problem there. But to hate someone because they view things differently than I do isn't right. Just because someone is a Democrat doesn't mean they cannot have good ideas for our country. I think Evan Byah would make a good President and he is a Democrat. I just think he is intelligent and has what it takes to be a true leader. He is no Ronald Reagan, but he does know what he is doing.I guess I just need to realize that this isn't the 70's or 80's. Sadly, politics has gone haywire!Well, I not here to attack Obama. What good would that do? Its the vote that counts! I can attack people until I'm blue in the face, or I can go and vote when the time comes. I think plan B is the better option.Steve: I agree! I guess I am referring more to things that do not effect our personal freedoms such as the environment. That is unless they impose so many restrictions that it does hurt our personal freedoms. I would be against that. I wouldn't want someone to tell me that I cannot fish or hunt because it harms the environment. As long as I hunt for food and use every part of the animal respectively, then I think its perfectly fine. moreResolved Question: pls help ... already have the answer but only as a second check?

so i wrote an essay on why napolean was a friend of the revolution and idk how to write the conclusion. please help. besides summarizing the main pts. and help with additional sentences for 4th pgh. thanks. heres the essay: Fellow citizens of France, Napoleon was clearly a friend of the revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. In 1779, he entered Brienne military school, and graduated at 16. He overthrew the directory government and became the commander of the French army. He proceeded to cross the Alps and won many victories against Austria and Sardinia. He crowned himself emperor of France in 1804. In 1810, he married Marie Louise and had a son to become the king of Rome. As a military genius, he whipped the army of 10,000 infantry into shape, followed by many victories over Italy, Austria. The mastermind never used a strategy twice. Napoleon was a friend of the revolution by creating better laws, and promoting equality. He also improved the economy, and created positive social change. France was changed for the better because of Napoleon’s rule. To begin with, Napoleon created improved laws and equality with France. He created public schools called lycées and 6,000 scholarship opportunities. Before public schools, not everyone had a chance for education so it was impossible for them to progress out of the peasant class and their poverty. They were not entitled to on of the three natural rights according to Locke: opportunity. Napoleon fired corrupt leaders, and selected officials fairly for the good of the French people. This made the government controlled with fairness and people more satisfied with the country. Leaders were also probably pleased because they knew they had been selected fairly. Additionally, the church lands became controlled by the government. Earlier, the Catholic Church’s overwhelming power took advantage of how the land was used. It was unreasonable for the Pope in Italy to own 10% of the land in France. Jews and Christians also became equal to one another. Religious equality made all people equal under the law and decreased the power of the Catholic Church over other religions. Many laws were created by Napoleon that were a positive addition for the people of France. Secondly, Napoleon greatly improved the economy of France. He established a national bank and fair tax collection. Previously, the third estate made up of 98% of the population was required to pay half of their income to taxes, while the first estate paid 2%, and the second estate paid none to taxes. Napoleon solved this problem and developed equality among the estates. He also gave out state loans to businesses and consolidated debt. Businesses needed loans so they could start their business and then pay back the money, making the economy more successful. By combining the debt, he made it easier to pay off. In addition, he stabilized the currency and balanced the budget. With the currency worth always changing, one wouldn’t know how much they would be paying for bread in the next week. He made it much easier for people by keeping prices stable. The economy was greatly enhanced as a result of Napoleon, which helped the people of France. Third, he created positive social change. Under Napoleon, children could receive equal inheritance from their parents. This prevented inequality between families and outrages or rebellion of French people because of the difference of inheritance. People could also marry or divorce as they wished, outside the Catholic Church. By limiting the excessive power of the church, fairness of marriage was provided to everyone, not just Christians. He stopped the revolts of the peasants as well, and unified the classes so they could work together. Napoleon claimed he would help the peasants, so they stopped rebelling with outbreaks. I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY I KNOW THIS PGH IS TOO SHORT. moreResolved Question: Those of you from PA must be really proud of your rep John MURSA. On a scale of 1 - 10 where would you put hi?
Friday, October 23, 2009 Murtha, Moran Steer Millions to Defense Firm Chuck Neubauer When software firm MobilVox wanted to break into the lucrative world of defense contracting, it pursued an unmistakable strategy: It expanded operations from its Northern Virginia base in Rep. James P. Moran's congressional district to the southwestern Pennsylvania district of Rep. John P. Murtha. Working with two of the most powerful members of a House subcommittee that controls Pentagon spending, the company also hired lobbying firms that employed former top aides of both the Democratic lawmakers and Mr. Murtha's brother. Company executives and their lobbyists donated thousands of dollars to the two congressmen. Soon, money flowed the other way. Between 2003 and 2009, Mr. Murtha and Mr. Moran helped deliver $12 million to MobilVox in earmarks - money that is set aside by lawmakers for pet projects in the government's annual spending bills. The latest House defense spending bill introduced and pushed through by Mr. Murtha includes an additional $2 million earmark for MobilVox requested by Mr. Moran. The bill is currently pending in conference committee. MobilVox, the two lawmakers and the lobbyists hired by the company insist they followed all congressional rules and campaign fundraising laws, and that all earmark decisions were made on their merit. None has been accused of any wrongdoing. But MobilVox's success fits a pattern of doing business in Washington that ethics watchdogs deride as a "pay-to-play" system - one that became infamous during Republican years and continues to operate under a Democratic leadership that had promised to change a "culture of corruption" in Washington. Mr. Moran's and Mr. Murtha's relationship with MobilVox "raises red flags. It is not subtle. It looks bad," said Joel Hefley, a retired Republican congressman from Colorado who chaired the House ethics committee when that panel admonished then-Majority leader Tom DeLay for ethical lapses earlier this decade. Mr. Hefley, who retired in 2006, said he was particularly troubled by MobilVox's opening of an office in Mr. Murtha's district, saying that while there may have been a good reason, "It looks like it was done to curry favor with a person who has power to benefit them." Mr. Murtha, chairman of the House defense appropriations subcommittee, is under siege as multiple grand juries investigate defense contractors close to him. The contractors built their businesses on Murtha earmarks at the same time they donated to him, hired lobbying companies that employed his former aides, associates and brother, and opened offices in his home district. Mr. Moran has escaped the public scrutiny that Mr. Murtha has faced, but Federal Election Commission (FEC) and congressional lobbying records show his relationship with MobilVox fits a substantially similar pattern that benefited his campaign coffers and delivered lobbying work to one of his closest former top aides, Melissa Koloszar, the congressman's longtime chief of staff and appropriations aide. A federal grand jury in Washington is investigating one of MobilVox's key lobbyists, Paul Magliocchetti, and his defunct firm, The PMA Group, which was highly successful in getting earmarks for dozens of clients. Prosecutors have signaled that what began as a probe into questions of whether Mr. Magliocchetti illegally reimbursed associates for their campaign donations may end up targeting members of Congress and their aides. Although federal agents searched PMA's offices and Mr. Magliocchetti's home in November, the investigation did not become public until February, three months before Rep. Peter J. Visclosky, Indiana Democrat, announced that a grand jury had subpoenaed records from his congressional and campaign offices. PMA employees were the top campaign contributors to Mr. Visclosky, and one of his former chiefs of staff was a PMA lobbyist. Mr. Visclosky, a member of the defense appropriations subcommittee, has denied any wrongdoing, but has stepped down as chairman of the energy and water appropriations subcommittee. A spokesman for Mr. Magliocchetti, who worked as a defense subcommittee staffer with Mr. Murtha and other members for nine years before becoming a lobbyist, declined comment on the probe. Mrs. Koloszar, who worked for PMA after leaving Mr. Moran's office, now works with her own lobbying firm. In an e-mail to The Washington Times, she said she did not lobby Mr. Moran's office during a one-year House-imposed "cooling off period" aimed at preventing top staffers from seeking legislative favors from their old bosses. She also said she did not lobby Mr. Murtha's office during the cooling-off period. Bill Allison of the D.C.-based Sunlight Foundation, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said the system that firms like MobilVox use to get earmarks amounts to "an influence tax on defense contracts. "It raises the question of moreResolved Question: Government regulating executive pay and employee bonus?
Let me first explain this to the left in a way my 4 year old son understands it... For a company to be successful, they need to hire the best in the business. The best in the business deserve higher pay because they are the best at what they do. If the govt imposes limits on what companies can pay their own executives, how can a company retain highly skilled leaders? Why would a top executive stay with a company that pays them less than half of what they can make anywhere else? If these companies are "too big to fail" why did we throw money at them and now cutting their legs from under them? Congress is full of career politicians and they have no idea how a business is run. I did not want my money to go to bailouts, but if these companies are truly to big to fail then I want the best in the business leading them to success.Dayoop - I don't want any company to have my money in the first place!! But the deed has already be done. You're not getting your money back. The purpose was to not let the companies fail, now we are setting them up to.You are shareholder but you are not getting your money back!! moreResolved Question: The Bank Manager’s Dilemma?
Topic: Institutions and Markets (Loan Covenants) Characters: Sara, A branch manager at a large commercial bank As a young branch manager at a relatively small retail office within a large bank holding company, Sara has been challenged by her superiors to increase loan and deposit volume within her local banking market. In Sara’s first year on the job, she has designed and implemented an aggressive calling program in which she visits local businesses and solicits new corporate accounts for the bank. Her initial efforts have been most successful. In spite of strong competition from other local financial institutions, Sara has managed to land a new $2 million deposit account from a local apartment management firm, Silver Valley Estates, and she is currently negotiating with Silver Valley’s president to provide a $300,000 mortgage loan for his new personal residence. After a recent credit committee meeting at the bank’s regional headquarters where Sara presented the mortgage loan request and received approval from the bank’s senior leaders for this loan, Sara is called to her boss’s office. She can hardly contain her excitement in greeting her boss, telling him of the new mortgage loan she is planning to make. Upon hearing the news, Sara’s boss frowns and tells her of a mistake that occurred in the bank’s deposit operations center several weeks ago. It seems a group of checks worth $20,000 deposited into Silver Valley’s rental collection account two months ago were returned to the bank for nonsufficient funds by the Federal Reserve. Instead of promptly deducting the bad checks from Silver Valley’s account and returning them to the firm, one of the deposit operations clerks at the bank inadvertently placed the checks in his bottom desk drawer and forgot about them. After several weeks, the bank’s auditors located the checks, and now Sara must debit Silver Valley’s account and return the checks to the firm. Sara protests to her boss that this action would clearly be wrong, because the bank’s written policy states that checks accepted for deposit cannot be returned after the tenth business day following their date of deposit. In addition, Sara explains that one condition of the bank’s mortgage loan approval to Silver Valley’s president is that the firm must maintain a major deposit account with Sara’s branch. She knows that if she charges the Silver Valley account for the bad check loss, she will anger Silver Valley’s president, lose the $2 million deposit account and the new mortgage loan, and sacrifice all future business from Silver Valley to competing financial institutions in her local market. Sara’s boss claims that he understands her dilemma, but he is adamant in his instruction to her. The bank cannot afford a $20,000 loss to a new corporate depositor, and she must debit Silver Valley’s account to cover the bad check loss. Moreover, Sara is quietly warned that discussing this matter with any other senior officers of the bank will prove most damaging to her career. What should she do? moreResolved Question: Have you read the Lou Pritchett letter?

Ok i have always been interested in business, and I've always dreamed of being a successful Entrepreneur or Business man while growing up. The problem for me is.. I don't know how to go about what i'm going to do in the business/marketing field. I've always been into urban fashion ( the first thing i look at when i see a person is how they dress, idk it's a habit) And i always like helping people with music, supporting them and helping them on their road to success, I'm familiar with the real estate field, but that's more of a last resort thing, Because i want to go to college after high school (im 15 in 10th grade) And i want to create a company/business/enterprise, not work for someone else. I mean if it comes to that i'll go to it but hey, i'm a leader. I'm just clueless on what i should do. I know ALOT about business and i'm anxious to be a part of something that deals with it asap. Thanks in advance. And yes i know i'm young, but i'm mature. moreVoting Question: What position at Abercrombie & Fitch would best provide me with experience for my own business?
I am still in high school, and know that i want to open my own business in clothing retail. I want to go to college and work in the abercrombie home office and design clothing for them since they are obviously successful and are probably the leader of high school/college apparel. I'm not sure which specific position (in general)would give me the best experience. There is apparel & graphic design, finance and business operation, many things that i am not sure would give me the best experience for my own business. I watched a very brief portion of Obama's education speech today and asked myself what are the very young supposed to take from this. I have three kids all under the age of six, the oldest in first grade. My understanding is that the speech was directed towards pre-k through 12. I have told my kids the importance of school, the importance of homework, and making good grades. I talk to them about what they like and what they want to do when they grow up (that changes constantly.) I graduated from college and now am a stay at home mom and my husband has a successful business which we run together. He did not learn how to be a great business man from going to college or being a great student, but from being in the military. I don't mind a good motivational education speech, but I do mind that our very young children are being subjected to such a serious speech by our President. I don't think a speech like this should even be considered for kids younger than middle school...if that. Parents, caring teachers, school staff, and community leaders should be encouraged to do this. I am saying this only because I look at my kids and see their interests right now in life...being curious and learning new things that are appropriate for their age. Hearing a speech from the President about choosing and sticking to what they want to be is ridiculous (for the very young.) These kids need to be kids...responsible kids...for the very short time they have in this world to be kids. That is the parents purpose and those who directly educate them in our schools. Do any parents feel like I do about this? moreResolved Question: How about the FCC Czar you know ,good old Mark Llyod another Marxist sympathizer, will he follow Vladimir Van?
Many officials in the Obama Administration are sympathetic to Marxist regimes. For example, Obama’s appointee to be the FCC’s “diversity officer” is Mark Lloyd, a big fan of Venezuela’s socialist dictator, Hugo Chavez. Although Chavez has shot unarmed demonstrators, Lloyd has called socialist Venezuela a model, praised its authoritarian leader’s “incredible revolution” and defended his attacks on independent media. Obama’s nominee to be Assistant Secretary of State, Arturo Valenzuela, has a reputation as a loud defender of Venezuelan dictator Chavez’s terrible record on freedom of the press. Lloyd is in fact a Saul Alinsky disciple. In his 2006 book entitled Prologue to a Farce: Communication and Democracy in America, he calls for an all-out "confrontational movement" against private media. He wants leftist activists - through incessant political pressure - and the government - through the creation of a totally untenable operating environment of fees, fines and regulations - to work together to force the commercial broadcasters out, to be replaced by public broadcasters. "It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press. This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies. I'm 24, but returned home to live with my parents since 3 years ago due to my financial situation and transferring studies to a campus near where they live. In my country, it is common for unmarried adults to live with parents. In the past half decade I've found it very hard to make a solid start on a career or be happy with the things I'm doing, although when I proceed on a project I usually excel at it and it carries out successfully; actually, I frequently function as a leader or key decision maker. I'm the type of person that many people forecast as "most likely to become successful in five years time"; but so many "five years" have passed and I feel like I've been going around in circles. Recently I began to notice that part of my problem lies with interpersonal relationships, and that's probably why my ventures hardly ever last. I have a tendency to be disliked by my colleagues because they think I'm demanding and insensitive. I tend to make very few friends, and the true friends I do make are usually seasonal friends bound together by a seasonal professional agenda. And I seem to have this issue with the authority above me--bosses, lecturers, clients, the government, my pastor at church, you name it. I find it hard to pay them the respect they deserve and make myself available to assist them, I get irritated when they don't treat me right, and I constantly complain about them because I always get disappointed with them. Apparently this pattern has started at home. I find it very hard to respect my mother. She always complains, demands, gets mad at everything, and blames everybody else. She always thinks she's the smartest and always right, but she's inconsistent about her principles. She guilt trips everyone and nothing anybody does for her is ever good enough. She calls everyone selfish just because they didn't put her first. She's a spoiled brat trapped in the body of a 53-year-old. The bottom line is, when there's a problem (even when it's not supposed to be hers), she always volunteers to make the problem worse and make everybody feel bad about it, but never does anything to actually bring a solution. In my mind I subconsiously don't think of her as a parent but as another one of my dad's kids... one that is spoiled rotten. Because of this treatment, I've had some serious yet undetected problems with self esteem. I appear confident and competent on the surface, but am always tortured by guilty feelings inside. In order to make up for the emotional destruction my mother always causes me, I've tried building mentor relationships with "surrogate mothers" --other people who I thought I wanted to become like-- only to find that in the end they were like my mother after all, and that I find it difficult to maintain respect for them too. My current mentor says that the root of my problem is my disrespect for my mother. If this were solved, that would bring about significant improvement in my interpersonal relationships and a breakthrough in my career. The thing is, I never intended to be disrespectful. I feel that I've respected and loved my mother as best as I know how. I've simply decided that I don't like some things about her character, resolved not to end up like her, and not take advice from her because I can't trust anything she says. Most of the time, I'm simply minding my own business and having a good time when somebody suddenly throws a tantrum at me and tells me that I've been disrespectful--and then I get hurt and things dwindle down from there. What's more, my mom is also disrespectful towards my dad and her parents... so I really don't have no idea of what respect for authority is supposed to be like, even after years of living far from my parents under other people's authority. OK, so I can't change my mother, but I can change myself into the respectful daughter I'm supposed to be. Where should I start? moreVoting Question: english assignment dream job?

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 4:20 PM PT Jimmy Carter became our 39th president at the young age of 52. He was a one-term governor from Plains, GA, where he managed the family peanut farm and taught Sunday school. He was also a graduate of the Naval Academy and served seven years in the Navy, leaving as a lieutenant. He came to power in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the resignation of President Nixon. The public wanted change and someone new, and Carter was an ambitious, hands-on politician who promised better days. As good as his intentions were, however, the things he tried were not successful. In fact, he created far more serious problems than he ever solved. The centerpiece of Carter's foreign policy was human rights, and he did achieve one noble success: a peace treaty between Egypt 's Anwar Sadat and Israel 's Menachem Begin. Unfortunately, that later led to Sadat's assassination at the hands of Muslim radicals. THAT'S RIGHT, MUSLIMS! Many people felt Carter was a good man who worked hard and meant well. But he was naive and incompetent in handling the enormous burdens and complex challenges of being president. He wrongly believed Americans had an 'inordinate fear of communism,' so he lifted travel bans to Cuba , North Vietnam and Cambodia and pardoned draft evaders. He also stopped B-1 bomber production and gave away our strategically located Panama Canal . His most damaging miscalculation was the withdrawal of U.S. support for the Shah of Iran, a strong and longtime military ally. Carter objected to the Shah's alleged mistreatment of imprisoned Soviet spies who were working to overthrow Iran 's government. He thought the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini, being a religious man, would make a fairer leader. Having lost U.S. support, the Shah was overthrown, the Ayatollah returned, Iran was declared an Islamic nation and Palestinian hit men were hired to eliminate opposition. The Ayatollah then introduced the idea of suicide bombers to the Palestine Liberation Organization, paying $35,000 to PLO families whose young people were brainwashed to kill as many Israelis as possible by blowing themselves up in crowded shopping areas. Next, the Ayatollah used Iran's oil wealth to create, train and finance a new terrorist organization, Hezbollah, which later would attack Israel in 2006. In November 1979, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Iranians stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. Not until six months into the ordeal did Carter attempt a rescue. But the mission, using just six Navy helicopters, was poorly executed. Three of the copters were disabled or lost in sandstorms. (Pilots weren't allowed to meet with weather forecasters because someone in authority worried about security.) Five airmen and three Marines lost their lives. So, due to overconfidence, inexperience and poor judgment, Carter undermined and lost a strong ally, Iran , that today aggressively threatens the U.S., Israel and the rest of the world with nuclear weapons. But that's not all. After Carter met for the first time with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, the USSR promptly invaded Afghanistan . Carter, ever the naive appeaser, was shocked. 'I can't believe the Russians lied to me,' he said. The invasion attracted a 23-year-old Saudi named Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan to recruit Muslim fighters and raise money for an anti-Soviet jihad. Part of that group eventually became al-Qaida, a terrorist organization that would declare war on America several times between 1996 and 1998 before attacking us on 9/11, killing more Americans than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor . On Carter's watch, the Soviet Union went on an unrestrained rampage in which it took over not only Afghanistan, but also Ethiopia, South Yemen, Angola, Cambodia, Mozambique, Grenada and Nicaragua. In spite of this, Carter's last defense budget proposed spending 45% below pre-Vietnam levels for fighter aircraft, 75% for ships, 83% for attack submarines and 90% for helicopters. Years later, as a civilian, Carter negotiated a peace agreement with North Korea to keep that communist country from developing nuclear weapons. He also convinced President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to go along with it. But the signed piece of paper proved worthless. The North Koreans deceived Carter and instead used our money, incentives and technical equipment to build nuclear weapons and pose the threat we face today. Thus did Carter unwittingly become our Neville Chamberlain, creating with his well-intended but inept, unrealistic and gullible actions the very conditions that led to the three most dangerous security threats we face today: Iran , al-Qaida and North Korea. On the domestic side, Carter gave us inflation of 15%, the highest in 34 years; interest rates of 21%, the highest in 115 years; and a severe moreResolved Question: What do you think about this letter to Obama?

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you. You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support. You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American. You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll. You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core. You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others. You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail. You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America' crowd and deliver this message abroad. You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector. You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one. You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves. You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world. You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations. You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals. You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people. You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient. You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do. You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Relllys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view. You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing. Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years. I'm having trouble finding reliable graders so I could use some help. All feedback, good and bad is welcomed. Assignment: Do memories hinder or help people in their effort to learn from the past and succeed in the present? Many people tend to forget their memories because of unwanted feelings that those memories bring. However, these memories can help one to success, as demonstrated by history and personal experiences. Mohandas Gandhi, also known has Mahatma Gandhi, is a well known leader that helped the people of India achieve their independence from Britain. Gandhi’s story began with him as a lawyer, unaware of the discrimination that happened across the world to Indians. He was on business in Africa, and needed to take the train to reach the law firm that he was planning to go to. The Africans were enraged that an Indian was sitting in the First Class section of the train. Many furious train passengers complained to the conductor, demanding that the Indian be kicked off. When asked to leave, Gandhi refused, claiming that he bought a ticket and had a right to sit in the train. Gandhi’s refusal got him physically thrown off the train and stripped of his belongings. It was at this point that Gandhi decided to devote his life to freeing Indians from persecution all around the world. In his conquest to save India, he always recalled this past memory as a motivator to helping people in similar conditions. He was finally successful when he freed his people from British rule. Until the day he was assassinated, Gandhi referred to the incident of the train a “golden opportunity.” It was by the influence of this memory that he was able to free hundreds or millions of people from imperialistic rule. Memories are a truly powerful tool, especially when they came to me in what could be called the most important few minutes of my life. With my Boy Scout troop, a group of 20 other boys and I embarked on a thirty mile bike ride towards East San Jose in California. We arrived a part of the ride that had slippery roads, and on these roads one of our friends fell off his bike and suffered a head injury. We stopped and quickly attended to his injury, seeing that he was unconscious and blood had begun to come out of his head. Panicked, I struggled to figure out what I should do. At this point, I recalled a time in which I too suffered a severe injury such as this one. My parents quickly bandaged my head with the nearest cloth and kept my head elevated. Although I didn't know exactly what t4ese things did, I did them anyways. I grabbed an extra shirt from my bag, and bandaged him while telling another boy to prop his head up. We waited until the paramedic came, who took our friend to the hospital where he would make a full recovery. The paramedic told us that our quick actions to minimize our friend’s blood loss may very well have saved his life. I was glad that this memory came to me, because without, my dear friend may not be with me with me today. My eyes were opened anew to the incredible power vested in my memories. Although many people view memories as ghosts of their past coming back to haunt them, they play a greater role than most people think; one memory saved a nation, just as an equally important memory saved a friend. moreResolved Question: What do you think of this letter ?
