Consumers tired of celeb-based marketing

Brands should stop basing marketing campaigns around sports, music and TV stars as consumers are becoming fed up of celebrity marketing, according to a new report.

The report by market analyst Datamonitor, based on trade interviews and journal research, says over-exposed celebrities have saturated the market and aging populations mean that the growth audience is shrinking.

Marketers must therefore pursue new tactics to avoid the pitfalls associated with celebrity-backed campaigns.

Nigel Haworth: National's 90-day probation plan would cost business

National's intention to introduce, if elected, a 90-day probationary employment period, possibly in the small business sector, should concern everyone who supports the building of a high-value, high-productivity economy.

High standards in the labour market are synonymous with high performance. Equally, low standards promote the opposite - high labour use, longer working hours, poor investment in training, lower capital intensity, lower wages and, eventually, reduced competitiveness.

Removing employment protection from new employees is a fundamental weakening of those high labour standards. Removal erodes an important building block of a high-performing economy.

The Council of Trade Unions has raised an obvious point: probationary circumstances are common in New Zealand; new employees are likely to be subject to more critical observation and assessment. more

HydroOGK approves 2008 business plan

RBC, 20.05.2008, Moscow 14:58:23.HydroOGK's Board of Directors approved on Monday the company's business plan for 2008, including an investment program worth RUB 78.1bn (approx USD 3.29bn), the power generation company's press office reported. Specifically, RUB 10.4bn (approx. USD 438m) will be used to modernize and renovate existing hydroelectric power plants, RUB 53.9bn (approx. USD 2.27bn) will go towards the construction of new facilities, and another RUB 6bn (approx. USD 253m) towards their design. The company is planning to install 410 megawatts of additional capacity. The investment program is to be financed by the company's own resources, as well as those of its subsidiaries.

A report to be released today on 'Doing Business In Nigeria 2008' by a team of World Bank (WB) officials working on investment climate programme, in concert with DFID, reveals that states in Nigeria vary substantially on the ease of doing business.
