Gas retailers need relief

"Government needs to recognize that it need to allow businesspeople operate their businesses. This government should not be stepping in the way of business, an in effect closing businesses because of inflated prices," McNeil said Wednesday. "The price now is driving Nova Scotians across the border to fill up their tank."

He said it makes no sense for government to be putting that kind of pressure on Cumberland County businesses.

"There's no way New Brunswick should be selling gasoline, on average, 10 cents a litre cheaper than Nova Scotia," McNeil said.

McNeil's comments come as the province has issued a request for proposals for yet another study of gas regulation.

"Every study this government has done has indicated that gas regulation is costing Nova Scotian consumers," McNeil said, pointing out the two reasons the government used for implementing regulation have not come to fruition. more

Government must step up to spark innovation

While no one can deny the fact that businesses like low taxes, this is not enough to create the high-value businesses and jobs that Canada needs for future prosperity.

A successful country also needs policies that will specifically target the creation and growth of high-value businesses. The Harper Tories reject this, arguing government cant pick winners and mustnt even try (unless its the aerospace industry in Quebec or its flawed biofuels subsidy). Their philosophy seems to assume that if the so-called framework conditions are right low inflation, low taxes, pro-competition policies and money for education then the "market" will take care of everything else.

The Liberals would agree on getting the fundamentals right but seem more ambivalent and largely silent on the issue of public policies to support innovative companies. more

Dabur, Marico confident of maintaining margins

How do you expect growth and the topline to be impacted going forward on account of those brands and relatively newer businesses like the Kaya Skin Clinic?

Mariwala: We should be able to maintain a good volume growth even in the current year and overall. We are confident that we will be able to maintain our growth level.

Q: Your sales were up better than the industry. You managed over 20% growth in FY08. Will you be able to maintain more than 20% growth in the current year?

Mariwala: We will try and do that.

Q: Would there be more focus on value-added services or products rather than mass production and mass consumption products?

Mariwala: Certainly, that is the journey we are undertaking for the last 3-4 years. more

Republic merger divestitures would attract Veolia, Waste

As such, it makes sense for these businesses to grow though acquisition for route consolidation, to internalize waste streams, or reduce overhead expenses.

Waste Connections, the listed California-based solid waste company, believes it is well positioned for any potential divestitures that come out of either combination, said CFO Worthing Jackman, who declined further comment. The analyst added that Waste Connections is clearly geared up for buys, noting its roughly USD 500m in capacity and its ability to add another USD 300m if necessary.

Wisconsin-based Veolia Environmental Services North America, a unit of France-based Veolia Environnement, is also expected to be interested in pieces, according to the second industry banker. Veolia's focus is the upper Midwest/Mid-South, and it could look at pieces there or in a new region, said the banker. more

Small businesses and small agricultural cooperatives that suffered substantial economic injury in the following counties are eligible to apply to the SBA: Lake, Jasper, Newton, and Porter counties in the State of Indiana; Cook, Kankakee and Will counties in the State of Illinois.

Economic injury disaster loans are available up to $l.5 million for small businesses and small agricultural cooperatives to meet ongoing operating expenses. The loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits.

The interest rate on these loans is 4 percent with a maximum term of 30 years. The SBA determines the amount of economic injury and the terms of each loan based on the financial circumstances of each borrower. more
