Arizona Business Conditions Index makes positive gains

The Arizona Business Conditions Index is edging back to growth territory.

The March reading moved up to 49.3 from 46.3. A reading above 50 represents a growing economy.

"Is this the turnaround in the economy that we've been hoping for? While this does not breach the critical 50-point mark that indicates growth or recession in the local economy, it is the first step upwards seen since November," said Dawn McLaren, a research economist at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, which compiles the monthly index. "It does not create a trend, but it may be the first step towards reversing the strong downward trend that began at the beginning of 2006."

The production component of the index gained the most ground, rising to 51.3 from 44.3 in March. more

Prices Of Industrial Producers Rise 1.2% During February In Slovak Republic

(RTTNews) - The prices of industrial producers for domestic consumption and exports rose 1.2% on a monthly basis, in February 2008, according to a report published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. This was due to increase in prices of industrial products for domestic consumption and for exports.

Producer prices increased 1.2%, in February compared to the previous month. While prices of products of industrial producers for domestic consumption increased by 2.4%, the prices for exports increased by 0.2%, the report noted.

In domestic consumption, prices of utilities, which included electricity, gas, steam and water supply, increased 5.4% while prices of mining and quarrying products rose 4.2% while the manufacturing sector rose 0.2%. Prices in the construction sector rose 0.5% in February. more

The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. Open Question: Advertising-- management software?

I am in ad sales and would like a software program to simply organize my client base on the run (as in something I can access online from my phone or an app I can download to manage those clients). Every single time I have an interaction with my client base (150 businesses) I would like to document it for quick and easy future reference. If there's nothing like it, are there any suggestions as to how to organize these leads simply by hand? (I don't want to carry around a huge binder wherever I go with 150 lined sheets for each business.) more

Open Question: I have major issues with my husband and I don't know how to change things?

I met my husband 2 yrs ago and got married in Jan 09 much against my parents wishes as they felt he's not the right guy for me (our education levels are contrasting- I am a doctor and have about 3 degrees n 2 diplomas while he has passed 10th grade) I could not agree tht education was a reason to dismiss a wonderful human being like him and so convinced my parents tht I will marry him and him only and they reluctantly agreed. He was a very happy go lucky guy and was never serious about money issues. Still he managed to lead a comfortable life. In the last one yr of marriage he went on to make stupid mistakes like buying a business by investing a huge amount of money (He took a loan for it)I had repeatedly insisted that he shud not buy the business as I knew it was going to be a huge loss He went on to borrow more money from frnds n all possible sources. He quit his well paying job to run the business (I had begged him not to leave the job, but he did not listen) Now he is in huge debt. I took up a part time job as I had full time uni for my masters program (which I was half way thru when I got married and did not want to quit ) and I am supporting the family thru this money. he has taken up a casual job but it is closed at the moment and he has no source of income. I am more than happy to work harder and help with the house but the bills are already overdue and some utilities are disconnected. He spends most of his time on the internet looking for some money making sites like work from home n stuff like tht and spends most of his time on it or reading about films n film stars. If he is not doing this he is on the phone with the prospective buyer of his failed business who has agreed to buy the business and paid him some money but keeps threatening to back off. If he is not doing this, then he goes to meet that guy (buyer) and talks abt future imaginary business projects and comes up with a new idea every day and tells me tht he is going to do this and tht. Otherwise he is on the phone with some one else who is absolutely useless. I have finished my masters now and m looking for a good job. I m confident of getting a high paying job and I am sure to get rid of his debts but he is only talking abt one thing - "Making money and becoming a billionaire" and not thinkin how he will do it. Before marriage our sex life was grt but now thr is no sex at all. i cant tell my parents anything cuz I dont want to hurt them and I know dat if my husband gets to know dat my parents know all this, he will ask them for money. Is there any options I should add or forgo? I really want an amazing computer that I can play games on, use the internet with, and multi-task on. Read the last paragraph if you read nothing else. At least someone in America isn't feeling a credit squeeze: Uncle Sam. This week Congress will vote to raise the national debt ceiling by nearly $2 trillion, to a total of $14 trillion. In this economy, everyone de-leverages except government. It's a sign of how deep the fiscal pathologies run in this Congress that $2 trillion will buy the federal government only one year before it has to seek another debt hike—conveniently timed to come after the midterm elections. Since Democrats began running Congress again in 2007, the federal debt limit has climbed by 39%. The new hike will lift the borrowing cap by another 15%. There is surely bipartisan blame for this government debt boom. George W. Bush approved gigantic spending increases for Medicare and bailouts. He also sponsored the first ineffective "stimulus" in February 2008—consisting of $168 billion in tax rebates and spending that depleted federal revenues in return for no economic lift. Democrats ridiculed Mr. Bush as "the most fiscally irresponsible President in history," but then they saw him and raised. They took an $800 billion deficit and made it $1.4 trillion in 2009 and perhaps that high again in 2010. In 10 months they have approved more than $1 trillion in spending that has saved union public jobs but has done little to assist private job creation. Still to come is the multitrillion-dollar health bill and another $100 billion to $200 billion "jobs" bill. We've never obsessed over the budget deficit, because the true cost of government is the amount it spends, not the amount it borrows. Milton Friedman used to say that the nation would be far better off with a budget half the current size but with larger deficits. Mr. Obama and his allies in Congress have done the opposite: They have increased the budget by 50% and financed the spending with IOUs. Our concern is that the Administration and Congress view this debt as a way to force a permanently higher tax base for decades to come. The liberal grand strategy is to use their accidentally large majorities this year to pass new entitlements that start small but will explode in future years. U.S. creditors will then demand higher taxes—taking income taxes back to their pre-Reagan rates and adding a value-added tax too. This would expand federal spending as a share of GDP to as much as 30% from the pre-crisis 20%. Remember the 1980s and 1990s when liberals said they worried about the debt? We now know they were faking it. When the Gipper chopped income and business tax rates by roughly 25% and then authorized a military build-up, Democrats and their favorite economists predicted doom for a decade. The late Paul Samuelson, the revered dean of the neo-Keynesians, expressed the prevailing view in those days when he called the Reagan deficits "an all-consuming evil." But wait: Those "evil" Reagan deficits averaged less than $200 billion a year, or about one-quarter as large in real terms as today's deficit. The national debt held by the public reached its peak in the Reagan years at 40.9%, and hit 49.2% in 1995. This year debt will hit 61% of GDP, heading to 68% soon even by the White House's optimistic estimates. Our view is that there is good and bad public borrowing. In the 1980s federal deficits financed a military buildup that ended the Cold War (leading to an annual peace dividend in the 1990s of 3% of GDP), as well as tax cuts that ended the stagflation of the 1970s and began 25 years of prosperity. Those were high return investments. Today's debt has financed . . . what exactly? The TARP money did undergird the financial system for a time and is now being repaid. But most of the rest has been spent on a political wish list of public programs ranging from unemployment insurance to wind turbines to tax credits for golf carts. Borrowing for such low return purposes makes America poorer in the long run. By the way, today's spending and debt totals don't account for the higher debt-servicing costs that are sure to come. The President's own budget office forecasts that annual interest payments by 2019 will be $774 billion, which will be more than the federal government will spend that year on national defense, education, transportation—in fact, all nondefense discretionary programs. Democrats want to pass the debt limit increase as a stowaway on the defense funding bill, hoping that few will notice while pledging to reduce spending at some future date. Republicans ought to force a long and careful debate that educates the public. Ultimately, the U.S. government has to pay its bills and the debt limit bill will have to pass. But debt limit votes are one of the few times historically when taxpayer advocates have leverage on Capitol Hill. I'm 20 years old; I start going to college at the age of 18. I was so excited! High School for me was not I expect to be, My mom though that I won't have a future because for her I never do anything in life. At the age of 17 I start the GED program, I couldn't understand what's the professor was teaching so I decided to take the books to home and teach myself. But for my mother, I was doing anything. At the end of the year by June 2007 I asked my professor to send me to take the exam, Although he didn't feel I was going to pass, he sent me. When I came back from vacation, I Received a letter with my High School Diploma and a over high passin grade 4 every subject. I was happy I Knew that for the first time, my mom would be proud of me. When I start going to college, everything were awesome! But my mom start to push me to get a job saying that I have to stop being so useless, because for her I was doing anything. So I apply for target and got accepted, I love this store but its a retail store and crazy as hell scheduled. On spring fall 2008 my GPA star to fall. My scheduled at target was 3:15-12:00 am. But I didn't want my mom to start saying that I was a worthless. I talked to her and accepted. But the same think start again. She said that I misuse TAP and FAFSA money, but Hey! I worked the entire christmas 2008 days and night over hour; But I didn't take that money for me, I gave it to her! I Don't care about money I just care on making my people happy but its like they forget about me! I'm not a party person I just like to be at home with the love of my family.But this job at school its not the type of job I like, I like a place to move around and etc, Like Target! The main reason that make lead me to decide to start working its to start from the beginning & get experience, But this is affecting soo much my career. First, I understand that this sound arrogant so let me do this. Disabled: 20 years paraplegic, walking but not well. Broke: I have been trying not to take advantage of a system that I have little respect for, but lost my job 4 months ago. Not physically suited to much, and lacking documented education. Highly intelligent: tested 11 out of 12 years of school to be of higher intelligence than 95 percent of the schools I attended. Special placement for "gifted kids" until I moved to a state my senior year that didn't have such a program. Here's my question: I have been developing a concept for a website for several years. I have recently found that another company has started something similar but does not exploit the full opportunity available, but they Just got $25M in funding. There is only one competitor to that sight right now doing things slightly differently, but they are off to a slow start, and seem kind of half in. And, there have been 2 other companies that both went broke in earlier days of the internet seemingly doing something similar. The 2 from the past are harder to research but it seems they both spent way too much money on advertising and not enough on the business of the business. How do I protect the idea and find somebody to develope an actual representation of the full site with all of it's intricasies when I don't have any money? Unfortunately I have never written a business plan and find it rather intimidating, but I can justify and explain every little nuance, from the business, to the backend, to the marketing and the execution. It seems that one of the dead companies may have patented parts of its' process, and this too may be an issue, but phone calls and research thus far all have led to the need to spend money I just don't have. I'm not affraid to share, and I am truly not greedy, but I don't want to let the cat out of the bag to be snatched and made into some foreign meal. Has anybody out here had experience with situations like this? Can you help? Looking for an investment? Please allow me to be clear. I don't have the knowledge or experience to create this site myself. I am an idea guy, and am looking to find out how to execute. Voting Question: How common is it to construct a team to program a piece of software without knowing how to program yourself?

How common and successful is the act of finding and building a team to build a product (which basically only requires programming) without being able to program in that language yourself? (as the project lead) From what I've seen, almost all (mostly freelance and Indie) projects cropping up around the Internet seem to have an experienced programmer leading the design and development of the product instead of say, a person who would call himself a designer. I'm asking this because I believe I have a few good ideas that can be laid out in a detailed, organized, and understandable fashion--in design documents. I'm wondering how realistic it is to try and look for a team without having years of experience in the require programming languages that will be used for the projects. Now, that's not to say I won't know anything about logic or the design flow of the programming required meaning the programmer(s) won't need to rewrite and reinterpret the design in a way that can be used by them. I'm talking about, with a good design document, how common, realistic, and finally, successful is it to find a team. On a related note: how do I let the prospective team members know I have a good design document and know what I'm talking about without giving away the entire document and opening the project up for copying or theft. (Not to say I'm against open source software or sharing ideas, I would just like to note that these ideas in mind have business ideals tied into them and are structured in such a way that is built for the user AND to bring in some sort of revenue) (If applicable, I would be open to releasing the code and/or design once the project had been completed) On yet another note: could anyone point out some good sites (with an exception to this site, of course!) for picking up possible team members? Resolved Question: Did I waste my time on an Engineering Technology Degree.?

I graduated from a very good school with a degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering Technology. My degree was a 5 year fully ABET accredited B.S. which included Calculus I, II and Dif Eq. I graduated with a 3.3. This was supposed to be the practical side of engineering. The school itself was ranked in the top five technology schools. The classes were practical but complex. This was all fine until I graduated and started talking to recruiters and HR managers. Here is what they ALL seem to say about Engineering Technology programs. These are not engineering programs and do not have the theory or mathematics needed for research or engineering. Many people are miss lead to believe that such programs are a branch of practical engineering. Most companies will not consider an engineering technology degree to be of any worth. Not enough theory for engineering and not enough business for management. Seems like my only hope is in a Maintenance department or to work as a technician. Ok wondering what to do at age 35. Should I go back to another school and pursue an undergraduate degree that is EE and NOT EET or maybe a masters degree in something else. I don't think a masters degree in EET would be any better or different. I'm leaning toward going for an EE degree, I will loose about two years worth of credit and it may take three or four years going part time and working. Do any companies still consider EET or MET degrees to be valid to apply for a management or practical engineering position. Is there any hope. Any advice or thought form people who know about the field would be appreciated.I am from and currently live in the USA. more

I've been applying for jobs since June when I graduated with my bachelors degree. I can't even get a callback. I have a fantastic resume. I've had multiple professors and two school's career services get it as close to perfection as possible. I've done many mock interviews with career services at my school as well. I have probably applied to 200 jobs or so since June. When information is available, I always send a follow-up e-mail about a week later restating my interest and qualifications. I have all these e-mails approved by my contact at my career services. I got desperate for work and money, so I started applying for part-time jobs. I went around to every restaurant and retail store in the area. My work experience includes 4 years as a waitress at a variety of restaurants, 1.5 years working as a department lead at Target, an internship with Ernst & Young, another accounting/business related internship, 6 years coaching gymnastics, and multiple leadership roles both in student organizations and jobs. I have kept in contact with my bosses at my old jobs and they have all said that they have received 0-1 calls from jobs and they would always shed me in a positive light. I also have 5 solid professional references. I graduated with honors from a top University (3.7 GPA) and I was in the business honors program. I'm running out of both options and money... any ideas? I even got rejected to be a minimum wage cashier at Wal-Mart :( more

My daughter graduated High School this year, she was supposed to get into LPN school which was only an 11 month program but would be a "safe" career choice for the time being,she could further her education in whatever career choice she wanted from there, but would always have that as a back up. Though she is very smart, she had poor attendance in school. and though she tested very high she wasn't chosen for the full-time LPN class. Her brother who is in the army and is trying to get her to choose a 4 year college. Finances are a major issue here and what she chooses has to lead to some kind of a decent career move. I sent her, and talked myself to her guidance counselor but it seemed pretty pointless. My daughter came back with answers like "photography" etc - and though she is creative,things like this to me are hobbies not careers. I, myself had gone to talk to a career counselor at Ohio Business College which has 2 year programs and no matter what class I pitched at the counselor she spouted off "35-40k EASY!" - I went home and researched and it would be more like 12 an hour for most. Are all career counselors dishonest and/or commission driven? and do most of the bigger schools charge fees for career planning testing? She is a good girl, doesn't drink,smoke and definitely not a sl**. I don't want her to wind up in the minimum wage loop like I am, she is much too smart for that. For the third time in a week, Obama sought to focus on job creation, noting that the unemployment rate was still at 10 percent in November, though down slightly from its 10.2 percent peak. He said "a staggering" 7 million Americans have lost jobs since the recession began two years ago. While his proposal did not include the kind of direct federal public works jobs that were created in the 1930s, he said government could set the stage for more job creation by private businesses. A major part of his package is new incentives for small businesses, which account for two-thirds of the nation's work force. He proposed a new tax cut for small businesses that hire in 2010 and an elimination for one year of the capital gains tax on profits from small-business investments. Obama also proposed an elimination of fees on loans to small businesses, coupled with federal guarantees of those loans through the end of next year. He called for more government spending on infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and water projects and for new tax breaks for consumers who invest in energy-efficient retrofits in their homes. Ok, I need help/opinions. I am an ecommerce operations manager for a major retail apparel website. And our area of the company has grown enormously in the last year so there has been more focus and money thrown at us (since online businesses are growing at a rapid pace nowadays). So things have been restructured a bit and I just acquired a new boss. She told me flat out that what I get paid ($45,600) is way below industry standards….so she is going to work on getting me more money. Especially since new people below me will be brought in (since we are much larger part of the business now) at/around my current salary. But she wants me to do research to see what other people in my role are getting paid. I did plenty of research…looked on monster, salary.com, simply hired.com, but didn’t come up with anything informative. Hi, I'm from a working class family. I just enrolled in an elite public college in my state last semester in the International Studies program to get into law school. I am 21 years old. Before I got into the state school, I was in a community college because wasn't that great of a student in high school and we didn't have any money to enroll me in a university out of high school. I recently changed my major into clinical psychology, after last semester's workload and the nature of their program (too business and economics focused) led me to become disenfranchised with my aspirations to become a lawyer. Every professor I've had so far had said I was very well-spoken, a smart student, and I become emotionally involved with the aspect of the study. When I was in community college, I had a 4.0 average for all five semesters. On top of that, I worked a job and was in the gym more or less for an hour a day. When I got into this university, I was overwhelmed by the amount of work they give the students- who, having been grandfathered into their curriculum out of high school, seem to accept this. Everyone I know studies, has a relatively high GPA, maintains this go-getter attitude, and has time for sports, music, and friends. I only found myself able to effectively complete and understand all of my work pulling all-nighters and absorbing excessive amounts of caffeine. I made a mistake last semester by working. It was my mother's (who is single) mandate that I maintain a job in order for her to give me a place to stay over break. My grades fell from the stellar 4.0 I had before entering to a staggering 2.3. None of my professors here were sympathetic. They all said "Manage your time. You'll get through this. You're smart." And off they went. I barely made it out last semester with the minimum credits for a full-time student. Now I'm taking an extra course to catch up, so in total, I'm taking sixteen credits this semester. I was doing fine for the first month, which is generally a baptism-by-fire type of workload. I still pulled all-nighters and drank coffee. I felt I was lacking in the social department since I had recently dropped going to the gym and decided to quit work to focus on studying and socializing, but keeping expenses to a minimum. I decided to become involved in Greek Life by joining a fraternity. I was hit by the ten-ton hammer that is pledge season. I am so behind in my schoolwork from missing so many consecutive classes due to lack of sleep and low motivation. Now I've hit rock-bottom. I have two B+'s, a C, and a C-. I'm completely unprepared for next week's final exams. I haven't read a quarter of the semester's workload. It seems irrational. The teachers here assign a week's load of work for a day, two of which we have per class. My community college friends who enrolled in other universities seem to be having it much easier. I feel that I've been dealt the wrong hand in life here by choosing to attend a prestigious school; sometimes I imagine transferring to another university, but I feel it's too late being a junior to start over. I don't see myself belonging here, amidst these robotic students with 3.5+ GPA's who eagerly take 18 credits a semester and enroll in organizations while having time for coffee with friends and going to parties. I've even lost interest in playing music, which is something I've always loved. I think this college and its high expectations are taking the best of me. People have said recently I've looked stressed, detached, and cold. I don't know what to do... I'm working 20 hours again to pay off pledge expenses. But now I feel like I'm not going to be able to go to grad school and will end up as a failure in life. How can I survive this next week, and what can I do about next semester? more

Resolved Question: can a marriage survive infidelity?

My wife and I have been married for 5 years. We have a new born at home. Alcohol, an out of town business trip and opportunity led to her meeting a new business associate at a professional dinner and ended that night with the two of them together in bed. The relationship continued for a few more weeks until discovered and has now ended. I have confronted the business associate but have not yet told his wife. My wife has for the first time begun a 12 step program to address her drinking but agrees that although a contributing factor to how the infidelity began, alcohol was not a factor in its continuation. She has apologized and says she wants to work things out. We are civil and talking but it is pretty labored. She has a fair bit of resentment about me and thinks I need to lighten up. I believe I can get generally past her infidelity with time but feel much change is needed for me to stay in the relationship. We are also in marriage counseling. I struggle with how easy it was for her to stray so quickly and casually to another's bed and have no ideas as to how to move on other than one day at a time. Voting Question: New construction handyman business, Need filing and organization help?

So I started a little handyman business. I got my general contractor's license, insurance and bond and am getting a fair amount of work. I like it but don't like having to sit down at the computer for too long of a time doing paperwork. I've got a makeshift filing system, all paper with folders, cabinet etc. I use MS Office Pro programs like Outlook for email/calendar etc and Word for all documents for bids, invoices, letterheads etc. I'm looking for the best and most efficient ways of dealing with all the administrative duties associated with running a small construction business. I wanna use technology as much as I can to help me keep track of receipts, invoices, job leads, etc. I know I need Quick Books or a program similar but not sure how much that program alone will help me when keeping track of everything. Should I keep a handwritten ledger of all transactions (fuel, materials, tools, withdrawals etc) or is there a program I can use to do that? Any help is much appreciated. Resolved Question: How come I always feel lost?

I am a 24 year old man, and I was always in the gifted programs in school. However, when it comes to adult tasks that require me to pay attention to things like paying bills, writing out sales letters and following through with leads, I always underperform. I get lost all of the time just doing basic stuff; like, when I am driving it will take me hours to find a place or get to a job interview. It's like I am always lost, so I get scared to even go out sometimes because I do stupid stuff like driving in the wrong direction and it will take me 30 minutes to get from point a to point b even if I know where I am going ahead of time. It has been hard for me to concentrate on minor details that make a person successful in life and in social relationships. I always feel lost about stuff, so I take an extra half hour to get to whereever I am going. I will sometimes get lost in a conversation and it's like I don't know what to say next or when it's my turn to speak or go do something in front of the crowd. Always had attention problems, and as a result none of the 'businesses' that I have ran have never had the potential that they once could have. What's going on? Diagnosed with ADD as a kid, which was probably mainly because I got into trouble with the authority, so they chalked it up to ADD and that made it hard for me in school. Now, as a man it is making things really difficult on me and I would like to know what's going on so that I can salvage my life and make myself a successful person. more

Consumers will always want the cheapest service/product. Here are 2 Prime Examples: In our Mixed Economy Education: Many people send their kids to public schools then private. Why? Because the first option is "free". Mail: Many people send their letters through USPS then private. Why? Because it's conveniently outside your house(Mail-Box), and it's "cheaper". --------------------------------------------------------------- Health Care will do the same thing as the two examples. What will happen is it will be "Cheap" since tax payers subsidize the cost. Consumers directly see a "cheap" cost, despite not seeing how the costs are lowered through taxation. This will lead to a government ran program, which is socialism. I wish we can keep everything privatized, so their will be competition. Private Schools here charge 7,000 a year intuition. While the state pays 11,000 per student. (Because of the District buildings and bureaucracy outside the schools function) You can't have a government program in competition with a private program. The private program can go bankrupt. This is why USPS and Public Schools are dominant over the private sectors. It's not because the private sectors are expensive. It's because consumers know (Or I hope), that their tax dollars makes these things function. So they pick those choices first. Consumers will always though pick the "cheaper" product. This is why Wal*Mart and Costco are widely visited. So in theory, you should either socialize America. Or do what the fore fathers wanted and privatize everything. (Read "Wealth of the Nations" by Adam Smith a Libertarian) This is why industry's that are 100% private with no government intervention never have problems. Voting Question: Why are the majority of the youths' education in North America inept in the English language?

I try very hard, but I cannot seem to write properly with the traditional tools of the pen and paper while I can see clearly what I am writing about on a monitor screen with a keyboard. One of my in-class assignments was hand-written. I received the latest in-class assignments back from my professor and I felt my heart sunk into a void where I essentially believed that I could not write, read, or even speak the English language. I felt horrible. I was shattered into a million pieces. I choked on my own spit and my mind ran shaking thoughts of discontinue going to school. I felt that discouraged as the markings on my assignment reminded me of the times during elementary where the teachers had to point out every single mistake I had made on a paragraph as I could not comprehend the proper structure of a paragraph or its sentences. At that moment, my mind went blank, detached, mindless you may say, but as I walked out of that classroom, I wanted to cry. I felt humiliated and undetermined to do anything accomplishing. All of my life I had always thought of myself inept in the English language until my college years. My professors then were very encouraging and found my writing works excellent for business and politics. However, from those encouragements alone made me wanted to step up from college to university into a Humanities program. It was a whole different level. The writing and reading was obviously academic and on a higher scale than what a young adult or a teenager would be able to read on a swift speed. Who can truly understand H.L.A. Hart's concepts and criticisms of natural law and legal positivists' theories through one read? I certainly cannot. The words just are not simply processing in my mind. I wish there was another way. Perhaps I should change majors and not aspire to be a lawyer. It's expensive (except in Quebec) and difficult to accomplish when practising as one. I know this because I currently work for a lawyer in a private law firm. Anyway, my boss complained about how the youth of today's generation are not adept in the English language. They cannot write, spell, or even read properly. We are always on a fast-paced level where we cannot stop for one minute to figure things out slowly and meticulously. We never try to slow down, and whenever we do, we are considered to be mentally retarded or slow. The faster we go, the faster we try, we are depicted as fast learners, thinkers, and achievers. Perhaps. If not so, then from your point of view, what is the case with most of the today's youth generation has an inept understanding of the English language from its most simple basic to complex structures. For instance, it's not statue, it's statute. It's not lead, it's led. Small things like it's or its or its', or Boss' or boss's, etc... to complexities such as dangling modifiers. I support drilling ANWR and off-shore, but I don't see anything wrong with a windfall profits tax for oil companies because the resource they are using is everyones (isnt that kinda liberal?) I am for civil unions, but against gay marriage because I believe the government shouldn't control the church. I am against abortion in ALL cases. My biggest conflict is I see how the government needs to regulate some industries to ensure we aren't drinking lead poison in our water and we aren't being taken advantage of by corporations, but I also see them as a good thing and should have low taxes and it should be easy to grow and start a business to create a strong economy I dont believe humans are causing global warming and think it could be a natural occurence if it even is happening. I believe in strong military defense spending. I know some of these positions are conservative, I just sometimes wonder if I am liberal at the municipal level because I see the importance in a city having strong public transit and zoning high-density land although I am against to much in social programs which I think is wasted alot. I believe in pre-emptive strikes and unilateral action against countries deemed a threat to national security and also support the patriot act. On the environmental front, although I do think there should be drilling in the artic reserves and other areas, I also would be for establishing lots of national parks and preserved lands which is a pretty liberal position i guess? more

Resolved Question: If I start as a nurse, can it lead to a physicians asst career?

I want to become a physicians assistant but 1. I don't think there is a program near me and 2. I don't know that I have the time to commit to it. I was looking to start out as a registered nurse and working my way up there for a while. Later in life I'd still like to go the PA route but would it be worth it or should I just go the nurse practitioner route? Side notes: My kids are 2 and 3. They will either need to be in daycare or pray that I can find a nanny/babysitter...I have a bachelors in business. My husband is in the military, we are stationed in central alaska. Reporters and commentators follow his every move and bombard the public with notice of his activities and opinions. But while the mainstream media promote his ideas about the state of planet Earth, they are mostly silent about the dramatic impact his economic proposals would have on America. And journalists routinely ignore evidence that he may personally benefit from his programs. Would the romance fizzle if Gore’s followers realized how much their man stands to gain? Earlier this year Gore experienced a notable public relations debacle. The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a state think tank, revealed that he was an energy hog. Public records show that Gore’s Nashville mansion used in one month more than twice the electricity the typical American household uses in a year: His average monthly electric bill was more than $1,359. Moreover, Gore’s household energy use increased after An Inconvenient Truth, his film about global warming, was released to ecstatic reviews. Never mind that the scientific community is divided over what causes global warming, how bad it is and how to deal with it. Gore plays Chicken Little to the media’s applause, insisting that the world is warming dangerously and that he has the solution. The ‘Cap-and-Trade’ System To resolve the “climate crisis,” Gore wants to put a cap on the production of greenhouse gases. He calls for an immediate freeze on U.S. emissions, a ban on new coal-fired power plants, tough new fuel-economy and energy-efficiency standards, renewable energy mandates, carbon taxes and mandatory targets and timetables for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Those emissions consist mostly of carbon dioxide (CO2), the byproduct of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, which supply 85% of all U.S. energy. Gore’s blueprint to save the planet moves the United States towards a command economy in which government regulators hold sway over what kinds and amounts of energy will be made available to the private sector. His principal regulatory tool is what’s called carbon-credit trading. Under a so-called “cap-and-trade” system, government places a ceiling or “cap” on private-sector emissions of CO2 and other “greenhouse gases.” Each sector, industry or business is allocated a fixed quantity of carbon credits that allow it to emit specific quantities of greenhouse gases. As an example, one tradable carbon credit might permit the emission of one ton of CO2. If a business emits more tons of CO2 than its supply of credits allows, it has the option to buy surplus credits from other firms -- or it will have to pay a fine in proportion to the amount of the excess emission. By contrast, businesses that emit less than their allocation can sell their excess credits. This system, which may sound market-friendly, is something only a bureaucrat could dream up. The twist is that the carbon market exists only because the government’s imposition of a cap creates an artificial scarcity in the right to produce energy. In a cap-and-trade system, buyers will purchase their offsets from a broker or through an electronic trading platform. In Europe, carbon trading is already a reality. Since 2005, carbon offsets have been traded electronically on the European Climate Exchange (ECX). Most carbon cap-and-trade programs also allow regulated entities to earn credits by taking actions that supposedly reduce emissions outside of the firm’s facilities or operations. In one popular version of the carbon-offset concept, firms earn credits by buying seedling trees for planting in less-developed countries. Supporters claim the CO2 intake of the trees will balance out the carbon emissions of the sponsoring firm’s industrial activity. Despite its public relations value, scientists scoff at the notion that it’s possible to plant enough trees to balance out man’s production of CO2. But carbon-offset projects are popular in the environmentalist community. More Chances to Cheat However, the most radical environmentalists reject cap-and-trade. They say it allows polluters to continue to pollute by purchasing carbon credits. That is true but irrelevant. A ton of CO2 emitted in Beijing has the same climatologic effect as a ton emitted in New York. need advice please....... Ever since childhood I have enjoyed being a keen observer and an early learner. My interest to know more has always led me towards exploring new avenues of learning. Throughout those years, I have been intrigued by a lot of sciences. As far as I remember, my special interest in Engineering came to light when I first thought of product productions at the age of 11. During my high school years, chemistry and math were my favorite subjects. I graduates high school at the age of sixteen and I attended online school program from London, UK. I was in double major with computer science and electronic commerce. During my first year of study in computer and business, I play professional computer games to pay my tuition. Finally, I realized that being a programmer was not my dream job. So I decided to go to United States and study to become a Chemical Engineer but my parents were very disappointment with my decision and they did not want me to go to foreign country because I am their only son. During my first year of study in Community College, I took general elective courses, math and basic engineering courses. Btw I had to start school from the beginning because of the credits from FC are not transferred. Two years later, I transferred to a very competitive engineering school with 3.3 GPA. I am majoring in chemical engineering. I chose chemical engineering program because it has a good knowledge combination of math, chemistry and mechanical engineering course load. I also like the idea of production of useful products for industry and people. I am really good at math and science (I had grade A in Cal1, 2, 3, Diff Equ and general chemistry and physics classes but C in English composition and literature classes) but right now I am having trouble with following my chemical engineering analysis class and organic class. ( the homework load of material balance and manometer problems are killing me). I am not a student like who like to party and always enjoying fun stuff. I am taking 16 credits and study at least 30 hrs a week just my own in library like individually not with the group. Is there anyone who did really well in sophomore year of ChemE and would like to advice me? Resolved Question: Many School Related Questions?

Hey guys, I am entering my senior year in high school and I have my eyes set on going to the University of Washington next year. I don't know if any of you guys have heard of the running start program in the state of Washington but it basically allows high school students to attend classes at local community colleges and gain college and high school credits at the same time. I will have my associates degree from college a few months before I graduate from high school. Afterwards I will go into UW as a mid-year junior. I looked at the degree programs at the University of Washington and I've decided that I will pursue an undergraduate business degree in both finance and accounting. Before I enter the workforce I might also earn a masters degree in accounting and get CPA certified as well. From the looks of things, I should complete those three degrees and get cpa certified by the time I am 21 years old or 22 at the oldest. This leads me to a few questions: 1) After I earn those degrees, will my young age hinder my ability to be competitive with older applicants who are searching for the same jobs as me? I was speaking with my father a while ago and he said that I might have a harder time being competitive due to the lack of maturity and world experience I may have compared to older job seekers. 2) Once I get my degrees from UW, I plan to work a few years and come back and earn an MBA; hopefully from a top 10 or even a top 5 program such as Stanford, MIT, Michigan, etc. Do these high end programs place a large emphasis on where I earned my previous degrees? UW has a good undergraduate business program. It is ranked 21st overall in the nation by U.S. News and its accounting program ranks 14th in the nation. However the entire business school is only ranked 33rd overall by BusinessWeek. If I finish at UW with a decent GPA (3.5 or higher) would I stand a good chance at being able to earn an MBA from one of the top programs later on? Or would MBA programs prefer that I have my undergraduate studies completed at a stronger program? 3) Any opinions on fraternities? Although I have heard mixed opinions about them I am definitely leaning towards joining a fraternity while I am a student there. From what I understand, most people that have been in fraternities don't regret it. It looks good on a resume, you get to meet more people than most other students would be able to, you get to do community services and activities, and I've heard the parties are awesome. My only major concern is the hazing. All of your answers would be greatly appreciated. I've tried finding the answers to my first two questions and I just don't know where to begin looking for them. Voting Question: Why are we discussing Obama's re-election chances already?

A large reason Obama was elected was that he promised to turn around the economy. And, after he was elected, he attempted to do just that: He kept huge banks and car makers from going out of business and creating hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of job losses, and created temporary infrastructure jobs by giving states money to build public works projects that were needed, anyway. However, unless you are EXTREMELY ignorant about how our economy works, you will know that the economy cannot reverse track in a week, it takes many months, maybe even a year, for the results of what was done to have their full effect. Shouldn't we wait until then to reserve judgement on whether or not his programs worked? That being said, many of the "leading economic indicators" are pointing up, predicting that the economy will begin to grow again in 3-6 months. (which, oddly enough, is about a year after the stimulus bills were passed, which is when their results were predicted to show themselves at time of their passage). As the economy ALWAYS does, it is going very slowly, and unemployment, as always, will take longer to correct itself, and will probably start going up in about a year. So why are we ignoring the basic way the economy has been working for the past hundred years when judging Obama? As if any economic activity could take place this fast. more
