The Beaumont and Banning Chambers of Commerce attended ribbon cuttings for three new businesses at the 2nd Street Marketplace on Thursday March 13.The three new businesses are Fantastic Sams, the Advantage Boardshop and a new Sprint cell phone dealer.Farhad Mansourian is one of the new owners of Fantastic Sams. The hair salon opened Aug. 10, 2007 and was bought by Mansourian in Jan. 2008.Mansourian is an Associate Professor of Economics at Crafton Hills College. Young professionals, business leaders meet
More than 300 of Rochester's young professionals and business leaders mingled in the hallways of the George Eastman House on Wednesday as part of the first-ever Roc City Rising event, an invitation-only forum to introduce the two groups to each other.
The event: In a rare but highly anticipated networking social, Rochester's emerging professionals were able connect with one another and interact with some of the city's established leaders, jamming the Potter Peristyle of Eastman House.
The event was sponsored by the ROC City Coalition and the Eastman Young Professionals, two of the more dominant YP groups in the area.
The tone of the evening was one of hope and optimism that these groups could play a role in turning Rochester around and making it a more vibrant place to live. more
Fayette County among group declared state disaster areas during floods
SPRINGFIELD - Nineteen Southern Illinois counties were declared state disaster areas Thursday morning after flooding covered roads, closed businesses and drove people from their homes.The designation, which came after two people died Wednesday in floodwaters in Jefferson County, puts residents and businesses in line for possible state and federal aid."The state has been working closely with local emergency management officials to assess their needs for assistance, and this state disaster declaration will ensure these counties get what they need to protect public safety and speed the recovery process," Gov. Rod Blagojevich said.Included in the declaration are: Alexander, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Marion, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, Union, White and Williamson counties. more

The fellow grumbled over his coffee at our favorite shop the other day. He didn't like what he was reading on the front page of The Post-Standard.
"Tell your boss," he shouted at me, "to quit running these stories. We need to move on to serious business."
He spoke about the story on the front page about David Paterson, our new governor of New York, having bad eyesight. My companion argued being legally blind doesn't affect his ability to think and govern.
He's right.
The chap added he doesn't need to see any more stories about David's marriage and infidelities, either. "That's a private matter," he said, lowering his volume a bit.

Hi All My wife is in a position to refer business to another company, who have agreed to pay her commission for every referral. The income she anticipates to generate each year will be ranging from 5k to 10k per annum. My questions are as follows: (1) Due to the limited income, should she set up a ltd company or just become a sole trader, or anything else you can recommend? (2) Someone told us that it would be best to set up a ltd company, and then get income as dividends. Whilst this may be answered in question 1 above, would this be a good option? (3) My wife would be working part time from home, which we are paying a mortgage. Can we claim anything as rent? I've read that we can claim £3 per week? (4) In order to start the business, she'll need to buy a work computer, printer, have internet access, make some work calls to generate leads, buy stationary, postage costs, etc. What can we claim? I appreciate that the answers might be different depending on which route she is best to go down. Can she just claim back the VAT when she does her tax at the end of the financial year or can we claim the whole costs as expenses? If you can claim the VAT back, do you need to be VAT registered? Due to the small income, she's not intending to be VAT registered. (5) When people say that you can claim the costs as expenses what does this actually mean? ie. ok - back in October I met a guy on an online dating website. About 3 weeks after we started talking, he had to go to the U.K. on business. As soon as he got home from there, we were finally going to meet. However, circumstances arose, and he had to go to Nigeria to be with his mom who was facing a major surgery. He called me up and was very upset. Long story short, I loaned him $1500 to help with his moms surgery. One thing lead to the next, and teh next thing you know he said that if I could loan him enough money to come home that he would pay me back everything he owes me. So , then nice and trusting person I try to be, I sent him $3500 for a plane ticket to come home. I asked him if he got his plane ticket, and he said he couldn't get it because he had to pay his cell phone bill and his internet bill before they would let him leave the country - and his bills were totalling more than i sent him. I am starting to believe this is all a scam. I would like to know how I can get my money back and get it back as fast as possible. Let me give examples 1) In Britain you had Neoclassic literature (based on reason)....then for 30 years you had idealistic Romantic literature (Liberal-like) that thrived from the poets like (William Wordsworth)...the idealism then yielded to the Victorian Age. 2) In the New England Renaissance, there was a short age of Transcendentalism...the Liberal movement of 19th century thinking, it too lost momentum rather quickly. 3) In the 1800s there were numerous socialist utopian experiments, they all were exciting and then collapsed within 10-15 year spans. 4) The Bolshevik Revolution: The Marxist utopian vision at first was spectacular until it was toppled by a new class of elite, who hijacked Marxism into Totalitarianism. 5) The French Revolution: Same great feeling among the peasantry....and then came Napoleon. 6) The 1960s and Civil Rights.....the hippie generation...acid rock........it all died with the economic challenges of the 1970s (hyperinflation) and then the exodus of wealth from downtown cities for suburban sprawl.....leading to a NEW age of segregation between city and suburban life (with the exception of Manhattan), then solved by gentrification of downtown cities.....leading to the elimination of urban cultures..... 7) The beginning of the Internet Age....this was where the masses had the ultimate opportunity to catch up with the business community....and they did.....with the dot com era!........Then the dot coms went bust......now the hype is gone.... 8) National Conference on Organized Resistance, Washington, DC campus of American University....(1997 thru 2008) This was a large set of workshops from the political left ranging from everything from anarchy to civil disobedience to artistic political expression to bio-disesel-fuel.....to feminism....to veganism....to alternatives to pills for mental illnesses......to nonviolent protests......Crowds of 5,000 people every January gathered on the campus courtyard...... until 2008 when no college student who hadn't graduated agreed to sponsor the workshop on their campus......the umbrella group discontinued itself indefinitely...... as a result........the entire production died off......and now the whole thing is gone completely...... I can work anywhere on earth there's internet. Now my question is this: As a Canadian, it is prohibited to obtain employment in the United States. I don't have a social Security Number for the US. I just get my jobs online and send them back online. Obviously I pay Canadian Taxes. My body isn't in Canada, but my business is. It has a PO box, I am self-employed. We own a small business and we have a several locations. I want the managers to all be able to access and edit the same data ( customer prospects, sales records, etc) from an internet connecting. In other words, even if it is a desktop program, can it pull data from a server so that multiple users can all see and edit the same stuff? if not, what CMS system can do this? We are at different places but all need to access and edit the same data. For instance if a new lead comes in at one location, they add the info to the cms system and then the other locations can see and update the same data. My topic would be "China's Human Rights Record"; more specifically, China's Internet Censorship. This project is not to justify internet censorship; it is your own opinion with information to back it up. Obviously, I am against China's internet censorship and am incorporating my opinion into my essay. Previously I had asked for help in creating a thesis and three main arguments, but I think I've got it figured out and I'd really like other opinions to help me out and to make sure that I'm actually doing this right. It's actually really not in proper format because it's all jumbled up in my brain and it meshes together when on paper. Which is what I need help with - any chance y'all can turn my mess of thoughts into a proper, well-written thesis & arguments? It would be VERY helpful to me. Working thesis (well, a description of what I want as a thesis, really): When the government controls everything, including media, it hurts human rights the most. Dear Jamie: I'm sorry but I would like to challenge some of your Black male readers. I am a White female who is engaged to a Black male-good-looking, educated and loving. I just don't understand a lot of Black female's attitudes about our relationship. My man decided he wanted me because the pickings amongst Black women were slim to none. As he said they were either too fat, too loud, too mean, too argumentative, too needy, too materialistic or carrying too much excess baggage. Before I became engaged, whenever I went out I was constantly approached by Black men, willing to wine and dine me and give me the world. If Black women are so up in arms about us being with their men, why don't they look at themselves and make some changes. I am tired of the dirty looks I get and snide remarks when we're out in public. I would like to hear from some Black men about why we are so appealing and coveted by them. He quit his well paying job to run the business (I had begged him not to leave the job, but he did not listen) Now he is in huge debt. My partner and I have been working for the past year and a half developing a marketing system to help promote local businesses in a certain niche market (sorry wont say what the niche is). But when we go to pitch our service we are running into problems. First this is what we do: Basically we have developed a website much akin yellow pages which only caters towards this niche, over the past year and a half we have become highly optimized for almost every category in the niche ranking in the top 3 spots in Google Yahoo and Bing (MSN). (outranking even yellowpages, yelp, yellowbook and others) However we are not only offering a subscription into the directory (which gives the clients more exposure). We build each client a website, they get to choose their domain name, we create a custom classified advertisements to use, and we promote their businesses through Google Adwords, (this is done by having adwords drop the click through onto their listing page on our site.) In addition we give the clients access to a backend where they can track how many impressions their classified ads recieve, how many clickthroughs to their website, and a host of other statistical tools. This is above and beyond yellowpages, in fact many clients we talk to say they spend 150-300 a month on yellowpages and recieve NO results. We have a few clients who are very satisfied with the service, and it has helped them land additional business. In fact for most of our clients, only 1 job from a lead covers a months charge or more, and we only charge $50/mo promotional rate for 6 months then it goes to $80/mo from there. Now here is the problem we face when trying to get new clients.... Many of you may have been cold called and pitched by some internet search engine optimization company that promises that they can get you on the front page of Google for a fee.. Most of those companies are shady and provide no results. For some reason when we start talking to people this is what they think we are doing... when in fact this is NOT what we are doing at all! I am a 30 year old single mother of two, with a work from home business in internet marketing that is doing better and better as time goes by, but I am far, far from rich. In fact, for my household size, I am barely above the poverty level, and back into it on bad months. I made the mistake of not buying health insurance for myself, and came down with gallbladder disease (needs to be removed). For those that know, this can be one of the most painful afflictions to have, and over time can lead to serious pancreatic problems. I had to go to the emergency room, and am now stuck with a 4k bill, and I have some pills that will ease oncoming attacks, but I need to get this taken care of, and can't afford to pay for it out of pocket. I am not eligible for aid, and my credit is not good enough for the hospital to finance it. I have done a lot of research. I know that I can get what's called "group insurance", if I add someone else to my business, but they can deny me for up to a year for a pre-existing condition, and who knows how much the payments/deductible are going to be. My saving grace might be the new healthcare legislation, and it may not, sorry but I just can't totally comprehend all the noise that's out there about it. I do know that they are pushing for legislation by Christmas. The point of what I'm trying to ask is, if this legislation gets passed, will I be able to get affordable healthcare coverage, and for this pre-existing condition? If so, are there any experts out there that can point me in the right direction of where to start once this takes place? This is a very painful condition that I would like to get care for ASAP, if possible. If I could get a heads up on where to begin, I would be that much closer. I do understand that this legislation might not even go into full effect immediately, and I was under the impression previously that it would take 5-10 years for this healthcare overhaul to really happen, for the people. How common and successful is the act of finding and building a team to build a product (which basically only requires programming) without being able to program in that language yourself? (as the project lead) From what I've seen, almost all (mostly freelance and Indie) projects cropping up around the Internet seem to have an experienced programmer leading the design and development of the product instead of say, a person who would call himself a designer. I'm asking this because I believe I have a few good ideas that can be laid out in a detailed, organized, and understandable fashion--in design documents. I'm wondering how realistic it is to try and look for a team without having years of experience in the require programming languages that will be used for the projects. Now, that's not to say I won't know anything about logic or the design flow of the programming required meaning the programmer(s) won't need to rewrite and reinterpret the design in a way that can be used by them. I'm talking about, with a good design document, how common, realistic, and finally, successful is it to find a team. On a related note: how do I let the prospective team members know I have a good design document and know what I'm talking about without giving away the entire document and opening the project up for copying or theft. FRIEDMAN In 2006, Ron Suskind published “The One Percent Doctrine,” a book about the U.S. war on terrorists after 9/11. The title was drawn from an assessment by then-Vice President Dick Cheney, who, in the face of concerns that a Pakistani scientist was offering nuclear-weapons expertise to Al Qaeda, reportedly declared: “If there’s a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping Al Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response.” Cheney contended that the U.S. had to confront a very new type of threat: a “low-probability, high-impact event.” Soon after Suskind’s book came out, the legal scholar Cass Sunstein, who then was at the University of Chicago, pointed out that Mr. Cheney seemed to be endorsing the same “precautionary principle” that also animated environmentalists. Sunstein wrote in his blog: “According to the Precautionary Principle, it is appropriate to respond aggressively to low-probability, high-impact events — such as climate change. Indeed, another vice president — Al Gore — can be understood to be arguing for a precautionary principle for climate change (though he believes that the chance of disaster is well over 1 percent).” Of course, Mr. Cheney would never accept that analogy. Indeed, many of the same people who defend Mr. Cheney’s One Percent Doctrine on nukes tell us not to worry at all about catastrophic global warming, where the odds are, in fact, a lot higher than 1 percent, if we stick to business as usual. That is unfortunate, because Cheney’s instinct is precisely the right framework with which to think about the climate issue — and this whole “climategate” controversy as well. “Climategate” was triggered on Nov. 17 when an unidentified person hacked into the e-mails and data files of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, one of the leading climate science centers in the world — and then posted them on the Internet. In a few instances, they revealed some leading climatologists seemingly massaging data to show more global warming and excluding contradictory research. Frankly, I found it very disappointing to read a leading climate scientist writing that he used a “trick” to “hide” a putative decline in temperatures or was keeping contradictory research from getting a proper hearing. Yes, the climate-denier community, funded by big oil, has published all sorts of bogus science for years — and the world never made a fuss. That, though, is no excuse for serious climatologists not adhering to the highest scientific standards at all times. That said, be serious: The evidence that our planet, since the Industrial Revolution, has been on a broad warming trend outside the normal variation patterns — with periodic micro-cooling phases — has been documented by a variety of independent research centers. As this paper just reported: “Despite recent fluctuations in global temperature year to year, which fueled claims of global cooling, a sustained global warming trend shows no signs of ending, according to new analysis by the World Meteorological Organization made public on Tuesday. The decade of the 2000s is very likely the warmest decade in the modern record.” This is not complicated. We know that our planet is enveloped in a blanket of greenhouse gases that keep the Earth at a comfortable temperature. As we pump more carbon-dioxide and other greenhouse gases into that blanket from cars, buildings, agriculture, forests and industry, more heat gets trapped. What we don’t know, because the climate system is so complex, is what other factors might over time compensate for that man-driven warming, or how rapidly temperatures might rise, melt more ice and raise sea levels. It’s all a game of odds. We’ve never been here before. We just know two things: one, the CO2 we put into the atmosphere stays there for many years, so it is “irreversible” in real-time (barring some feat of geo-engineering); and two, that CO2 buildup has the potential to unleash “catastrophic” warming. When I see a problem that has even a 1 percent probability of occurring and is “irreversible” and potentially “catastrophic,” I buy insurance. That is what taking climate change seriously is all about. If we prepare for climate change by building a clean-power economy, but climate change turns out to be a hoax, what would be the result? Well, during a transition period, we would have higher energy prices. But gradually we would be driving battery-powered electric cars and powering more and more of our homes and factories with wind, solar, nuclear and second-generation biofuels. And I don't mean for medicinal reasons, I mean purely for fun. It is just as harmful as tobacco and alcohol. Many reasons for it being illegal are: 1. It damages lungs. (so does tobacco) 2. It damages your state of mind. (there is no concrete proof of this) 3. It can cause panic attacks and paranoia etc. (just as much as alcohol) 4. It can contain glass fragments/lead to make it way more and increase profits (if legalised, it would not only be regulated by standards, but also people could grow it for themselves) 5. It fuels street crime (this would also be stopped almost instantly as people would be able to get it from legitimate sources or grow there own) And to finish, I'm no expert on economics, but this would be BIG business and could create a lot of stimulation. And undoubtedly the government would impose some sort of tax, increasing their budget. Finally in my internet job I bought a house in Orlando Florida, all the homes in my neighborhood have big rectangle glass windows that lead to the living room. I moved in about 2-3 weeks ago. I noticed that the house in front of me had a young girl with a fuzzy cat on her lap, just petting it looking at nothing, I thought it was weird and joked to myself and let it go, the next day VERY very early the girl was there in the same place, the cat too, but she had different clothes so I knew she walked around at some point, I was too much in a hurry to care, every since then most of the time when I look out the window the girl was there, by the 1st week I got worried and knocked on the door and asked what's wrong with her and are you people even noticing the girl's not moving. Well the lady told me the girl (about 15-16 year old girl) is blind.. I thought ok, but I know blind people don't do that for a living so I asked further, her answer as I recall it was this; Rose (the girl) lost her ability to see not too long ago, she was devastated, and one day while strolling a shelter a Persian cat (called Soul) responded varies ways depending on how she was expressing her emotions. She got the cat and then comes ANOTHER story, and this one the answer to my question. The girl believes the cat knows how she feels, whenever and whatever it is that she feels. Because some how the feline can understand the energy the girl is giving out in a kind of "physic way", she says Rose feels the most comfortable when she is touching the cat in a way "letting the cat know how her energy is going so far". She told me to watch carefully when I get the chance and see that when Rose is happy and active, the cat is away and minding her own business, but when the girl is waiting for something, feels lonely or feels bad about being blind or something, the cat comes without warning into the couch "inviting her" and meowing to come sit down and repeatedly pet her until she feels better. So basically, my now ex girlfriend broke up with me about 4 months ago, I ran into her at a mutual friends birthday party and she was very flirty and bold to me. She sent me a picture mail of a picture she had taken of me later that night (initiating this whole ordeal) and we had a light text conversation, the next day I asked to hang out so we did, we were very close, more than just friends even though she claims that is all she wanted. She lied next to me and I thought there was hope of getting back together, she said differently. We have hung out a few more times since than and the physical stuff has subsided for the most part. But she still calls me every night and we talk for hours, she texts me all the time, but she constantly says, this is bad, or I shouldn't be doing this. But she does anyways, and just throws that in there to make it "okay". My question is, does it seem like she wants more? She has said that I am her best friend, but I know neither her nor I text our best friends all throughout the day, let alone call them every night and talk about each others' days for hours. She says we are best friends, I still am maintaining a hope that we will somehow get back together. What do I make of this? Is it really JUST a friendship? "We are saddened and disappointed that two years after the disastrous 2007 immigration raids that tore apart families and penalized American businesses, the federal government is once again adopting a shortsighted enforcement-only approach to immigration policy," the group said in a prepared statement. The group also said the federal government should concentrate its efforts on fighting crimes along the border such as drug trafficking and gang activity instead of "harassing hardworking families and business owners." When the audits will take place and how they will be conducted has not been announced. "All employers have an obligation to assure that they have a work force that complies with the law," El Paso Mayor John Cook said. I am 19 years old as of this last 25th of September. I can't go into detail but my life hasn't been a bowl of cheerios. In the shortest way I can explain it... Actual father wasn't a father at all, was crazy, tried to kill me multiple times. Stalked my mom. Me and her moved around a lot. She went crazy on me when I was younger. Has multiple personalities, trashes wherever we are with tons of piles of stuff, doesn't work, uses money from other people who are paying it to her mainly because of me. She doesn't seem to want me to be close to anyone but herself. I never go out by myself without her knowing and this is EXTREMELY RARELY. I haven't been properly homeschooled and I've never been to a normal school except for a little bit in kindergarten and some summer camps. I've been to extra curricular activities and she's shown a lot of love for me and has taken care of me in sickness and made me lots of dinners and been overly sweet.. but she's also been very off the handle, crazy, screaming and blaming everyone around us for stuff like harrassing us with police and everything else she can. My boss is quite ambitious,well and widely connected and I share his vision business-wise. We have a great relationship and one day we were talking about everything and anything and we discovered that he knows a guy who in my world represents perfection, which is probably why he's a model. The boss found my excitement cute and said: 'I'll bring him here.' I'm one of those people who can talk to anyone, but not quite as smoothly to the ones I like very very very much so I said: 'Please don't!' because I know myself and I knew I'd panic. Anyway, days go by and at the same time I'm hoping he'll appear and he won't and I'll be able to continue to lead my routine life. The other day, I see my boss running into the office and hear him say: 'He's coming in an hour!' That's when I lost concept of everything. Primary I would love to make cultural tasks my business - no matter if they have to do with historico-cultural topics or current culture. I went to this local class this morning put out by the government to help people learn about business. One of the people I met there gave me his business card & I my husband & I were going to call him at 3:30 & met at his house at 4:00. Being asked to choose the defining moments of one’s life is tough. How does one choose among the many moments that occur in a day, the numerous moments in a month and the countless moments in a year. The process of scouring my mind brought up many memories: some personal, some shared. I was able to trim down the moments to the two which I believe has made me the person I am today. The first I chose because it was the most vivid, it was the first time I commuted alone. It was significant because it was my first taste of a new kind of freedom; it was the freedom of mobility, being able to go somewhere without the constraints of my parents’ schedules. The other thing that stuck to my mind was that of my parents trust and faith that I could keep myself safe. In hind sight I realized it was a coming of age of sorts, it symbolized my transition into adolescence. This was the event which made me realize I was on the path to independence, that in a few years I would be fully responsible for myself and my actions. The next moment I chose because it was when I realized my business-oriented personality. I used to rent out my pens and pencils as a kid and even had a successful business selling Push Pops which was once the craze among my peers. Hello! This is not a question, but rather a resource for all aspiring actors and actresses out there. Instead of i guess wasting your points asking how to become an actress, I will tell you how to become as successful as possible. Before I get started, let me give you a little background first. My name is Anna, and I have been in the acting business since I was 6 years old, and modeling since I was 4. I am now 13 years old, so that makes almost 9 years in the business. I do have experience, as I am not telling you my knowledge coming from someone who has zero experience. Step One: Get into some acting classes. Without these, you will get nowhere. It doesn't matter if you have natural talent or think you are they best, you must take these. It is a known fact that without training, casting directors wont even consider you for roles. For starters, I would suggest an improvisation class. If you are looking into getting into film or television acting, I would suggest taking a film or television acting workshop. Classes should not cost more that a few hundred dollars, if that. Many classes are offered at local theater companies. With some research on the internet and in the phone book, finding a class perfect for you will be easy. Step 2 So great! You are now enrolled in an acting class. You are now ready for the next step: gaining experience. Audition for local theater productions, school plays, church plays, and independent films. As a beginner actor, you will not automatically start out by doing films and television shows. You must work your way up. Gaining enough training should take about a year. It would be a plus if you got some leads or main roles. To find auditions, call your local theater company, or contact your local community college, which may be holding auditions for student films, which look great on any resume. For all people who want to become an actor on the Disney Channel: please do not send your audition tapes to Disney. Unless you have an agent with an impressive resume, they will not even consider you. You will be just wasting your time. Also, "casting call" websites are not a good place to start. Many of those sites usually are scams, or are looking for experienced actors. STEP 3 Great! So you've been taking acting classes and have some experience in acting. Now you have some background and are not going into this clueless. The next step is to get 8x10 color headshots of yourself. If you are serious about acting, you should get AT LEAST 300 of these prints, which will be used for auditions, casting calls, etc. Also, you must create a resume, which is a written copy of all previous acting training and experience, as well as your statistics and special skills. You can go to http://www.bestsampleresume.com/acting-resumes.html to find the best format for you. Paste your resume to the back of your headshot. You are now ready for the next step, and perhaps the most challenging and exciting step... getting an agent. STEP 4 So you have created a resume and have your headshots done. It is now time to get an agent. Agents help find auditions and casting calls for you to go on, and is another essential part of showbiz. The do not cost a thing! Never pay an agent. They only take around 15% of the money you earn when you book a job. Start out by finding a local agent. Don't get an agent in Hollywood or NYC unless you live there. To find a list of SAG franchised agencies in your area, visit http://www.sag.org . Once you have picked out a few different agencies that seem legit or that you like, send them your resume and headshot, along with a cover letter in a yellow envelope. Do not drop these off. (A cover letter is a letter briefly describing why you would be an asset to their company.) If the agency likes you, they will call you in for an interview. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few months, so don't get discouraged. If you impress them at the interview, you will be asked to sign with their agency. Please also be aware that if you don't receive a call from an agency, it's not that they didn't like you, it's just maybe your not what they were looking for. Once you sign with an agency, they will send you on auditions for film, television, commercials, and theater depending on your type of agency. Those are basically all of the basic steps on how to become a professional actor or actress. I am not guaranteeing success, but if you follow these steps I know that you will get somewhere. Also, keep in mind that most television shows, films, and commercials are shot in Los Angeles and NYC. Eventually, you will have to move to either one of these cities if you are serious about acting.
