Barbados to pay up for tourism marketing

BARBADOS MAY BE EXPECTED to contribute a significant share to the Caribbean Tourism Marketing Fund proposed by CARICOM Heads of Government for selling the region as a single tourist destination.

This is the indication from Luther Miller, director of finance at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), who confirmed that Caribbean countries were better off marketing themselves in a cluster.

"It has been demonstrated over the years by going to major international travel trade shows, be it in London, Berlin, France or Milan, that given all the clutter in the world today in tourism marketing, the market responds better to the collective image of the Caribbean. . . ."

Two weeks ago, whilst introducing tourism in the 2008 Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals, Prime Minister David Thompson noted that some major decisions were taken for the industry in the Caribbean at the recent Heads of Government meeting held in Antigua, "including the commitment to a regional brand". more

With a cadre of 100 internal facilitators, more than 40 design thinking workshops have been held in P&G business units across the globe during the past year. The design thinking facilitation team comes from every function at P&G [such as marketing, research and development, info tech, and product supply as well as design]. Perhaps most important, half of the workshops focused on something other than new product initiatives to include other types of pressing business issues such as strategy, retail relationship building, and matters of operational excellence. "We want people to use these techniques daily in their work -- using broad insights; learning faster; failing faster. more

Resolved Question: Do I have a shot at Stanford, Brown, Vanderbilt, Duke, UVA, and Georgetown?

My full college list is as followed (in order of preference): Stanford Brown Vanderbilt Duke William & Mary UVA Georgetown FSU (in state safety) I am currently a junior in high school. SAT: 2110. I just got the results back today; this was my first time taking the test. Should I retake? I was disappointed with my critical reading score and I feel as if I can do better. The score breakdown is as follows: Critical Reading670 Math 700 Writing 740 GPA (unweighted): 3.92 GPA (weighted): 4.4. Honors classes already taken: Biology, Chemistry, Algebra II, Geometry, Algebra I, English II, English I, World History, French I, French II, French III Honors classes currently being taken: Precalculus, Physics, French IV. Awards/Recognition: (Art) 2x Scholastic Honorable Mention (9th grade) 1st place at the Black & White show (10th grade) Notable student in Chemistry and English I, though I doubt that is very important. Acceptance into Stanford's EPGY program (Education Program for Gifted Youth) last summer, a 3 week long class in 20th century humanities. Apparently, attending EPGY bumps up your acceptance chances slightly. So, what do you think? Which schools do I have the best shot at? Anything I should particularly focus on senior year? And should I retake the SATs? If so, when? more

Resolved Question: What are my chances to get into an ivy league school (I want my undergraduate major in biology)?

Here are a few quick stats. -2070 SAT -SAT II - Biology E/M - 800/730, Math IIC - 760 -Unweighted GPA for Junior and half of Senior year: 3.78 -Weighted GPA for Junior and half of Senior year: 4.5 (The difference is big because I took like 6 APs) Extracurriculars: - 9 years of violin and member of the state youth orchestra - Ultimate Frisbee (Fall and Spring) - 80 hours of volunteering at Township Red Cross Center - Certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). I have to do 24 hours of service in a live ambulance every 4 weeks. - Member of "Future Business Leaders of America" Club (or FBLA) - Nominated representative (of India) for GYLC - Global Youth Leadership Conference, but I didn't get to attend :( My Freshman and Sophomore years were completed with India. My final overall grades were 74% for Freshman year, and 83% for Sophomore year. (In India, a 75% is an A and a 40% is a passing grade. Its not that their expectations are low, but that the material is so god damn hard). My schooling from Pre-K to 8th grade was in America P.S. I wanted to know if an Independent Study Course looks attractive on a college app. During my junior year, I only took 5 classes (2 APs, 2 HNS, and 1 Regular) and 1 Independent Study. My teacher was a good teacher (she graduated from Princeton), and together we researched "The Psychology behind Love and Attraction". (By together I mean, I researched and explained it to her during our little meanings after school. I was wondering if this would look like an example of academic pursuit on my application. P.S.S. My essay is about my experiences in the ambulance as an EMT. Pretty epic incidents I got to witness :D more

Resolved Question: Do u think this article is a good assessment of where Obama's presidential storyline is heading in the future?

I read this article and was a little blown away. If your Obama's political "team", you have serious WORK to do.... What do you think?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29993.html A year into his presidency, however, Obama’s gift for controlling his image shows signs of faltering. As Washington returns to work from the Thanksgiving holiday, there are several anti-Obama storylines gaining momentum. The Obama White House argues that all of these storylines are inaccurate or unfair. In some cases these anti-Obama narratives are fanned by Republicans, in some cases by reporters and commentators. But they all are serious threats to Obama, if they gain enough currency to become the dominant frame through which people interpret the president’s actions and motives. Here are seven storylines Obama needs to worry about: He thinks he’s playing with Monopoly money Economists and business leaders from across the ideological spectrum were urging the new president on last winter when he signed onto more than a trillion in stimulus spending and bank and auto bailouts during his first weeks in office. Many, though far from all, of these same people now agree that these actions helped avert an even worse financial catastrophe. Along the way, however, it is clear Obama underestimated the political consequences that flow from the perception that he is a profligate spender. He also misjudged the anger in middle America about bailouts with weak and sporadic public explanations of why he believed they were necessary. The flight of independents away from Democrats last summer — the trend that recently hammered Democrats in off-year elections in Virginia — coincided with what polls show was alarm among these voters about undisciplined big government and runaway spending. The likely passage of a health care reform package criticized as weak on cost-control will compound the problem. more

Resolved Question: How can I increase my GPA and academic recognition through studying the "right" way?

Summary if you don't want to read the wall of text: I need help forming a decent study system so that I can improve upon my GPA. I need to find a work around for learning without having to get a tutor (however beneficial it can be [pricing is an issue]) due to having incompetent teachers. I currently have, according to the transcript that I got from my counselor today, a 3.125 unweighted GPA and 3.2 weighted. I'm currently a junior in high school with a decent selection of "dream" universities that I'd like to go to because they are focused on my interests and respect extending those interests and more (Stanford, UC's). I'd like to blame teachers that I've had the past almost 2.5 years because they are definitely mediocre at best and next to always sub par. Anyway, to the good stuff... I'm having trouble in Algebra II and Physics (math does seem to be my weak subject year after year), but those two classes are where I have my two worst teachers. For the former, she just copies the textbook's problems onto the board and explains in the exact way as the book, so taking notes is unnecessary, which is probably why she forbids it (if you do it, you get sent out). As for the latter, we usually just do labs (which is somewhat understandable in a lab-oriented science class) but homework is never due, so it's mainly a do for your own benefit activity. He rarely teaches that class and has us present solutions to the rest of the class for an assigned homework problem and if you're lucky (you don't understand the problem that you've been assigned) he'll "explain" it. I had an F in the Algebra class, yet managed to raise it to a D- (keep in mind that the teacher for this class has a decent grading scale, where a D- is equivalent to ~ 55% Why I would really like to know is how I can improve my study habits. For instance, I have a notebook where I take notes, but the notes aren't exactly satisfactory considering that for the Alg. class I'm really just copying from the book, which is definitely not very helpful. I'm really trying to make a comeback so that I'll be able to pull those two D's to at least a C (a B would be perfect but probably impossible), which would presumably pull my GPA up at least a little bit. My current class schedule is: AP English (language composition and rhetoric) Algebra II Physics Third Year French US History I'm currently considered 192 out of 460 in class rank. (~41%) Would definitely like to pull that up, which I know can be done if I can pull up those two D's. Although this is beside the GPA issues, I do have other qualities that should help in the selection/admit process by the universities: Over 200 hrs in community service. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) - I would assume that this looks "good" for Stanford since it deals with one of their main focus themes. iPhone Developer - Just an added bonus, may or may not be presentable but it would work well in my opinion in collaboration with the FBLA part. Thanks, more information can be given if needed. more

Resolved Question: Who is a Native American?

George Armstrong Custer predicted Native Americans soon would be extinct before he ordered his soldiers to kill them at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Just as Custer discovered in his fatal encounter with Lakota and Cheyenne warriors, the native tribes proved resilient in surviving impossible odds. More than 4 million U.S. citizens in 2003 identified as Native Americans, either alone or in combination with another race. This is a little more than 1 percent of the total 294 million people living in the United States, far fewer than the 10 to 25 million believed to be living in North America when European settlers arrived about 500 years ago. Those settlers spread fatal diseases, imposed genocide, forced assimilation, stole land, broke treaties, destroyed cultures and committed other crimes that ravaged indigenous societies. Centuries of dehumanization resulted in the educational, economic and health disparities evidenced by Native Americans today. But refusal to succumb also nurtured a strong will embodied by many Native Americans who now comprise more than 560 federally recognized tribes and nations spread across 34 states and 140 more tribes applying for federal recognition. That strong will has empowered Native-American entrepreneurs and those in the corporate world to thrive in a society where mainstream values sometimes run counter to their traditional beliefs. Yet Jackie Gant's frustration is clear when she speaks of how many people only envision slot machines and blackjack tables when they think of Native Americans as an economic force. Gant, national executive director of the Native American Business Alliance, met Bush administration officials in the White House in September to let them know of the 10,000 Native-American-owned businesses listed in her database. Her organization's mission is to create networking opportunities and promote Native-American businesses as suppliers to corporate America and government agencies. Her group has the support of corporate sponsors including United Parcel Service, Ford Motor Co., General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, The Coca-Cola Co., General Mills, Target and The Walt Disney Co. At the meeting, she tried to convey the strength of a people who saved the first white settlers from starvation and influenced the founding fathers in shaping the Constitution. Gant is a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames, Canada, and Munsee-Delaware Nation. "As I stood, I felt the weight of Indian country on my shoulders and I knew the words I spoke needed to be heard," Gant says. Gant and other Native Americans have made great strides in dispelling myths and bringing attention to their issues, but the widespread ignorance of their history still pervades the highest levels of leadership, up to and including the president himself. President Bush displayed a lack of knowledge on the most crucial issue facing Native Americans—sovereignty—when he was asked in August what tribal sovereignty in the 21st century meant to him. "You are a ... you have been given sovereignty, and you are viewed as a sovereign entity," Bush told journalists of color gathered in Washington, D.C. Bush's response rang hollow and was reminiscent of the countless false promises many white men have made to Native Americans over centuries. Sovereignty speaks to the right of Native Americans to control their own land where they are free to shape their economic and spiritual destiny and maintain their traditions and culture. The lack of substance and depth in Bush's answer typified the harmful perceptions, attitudes and actions that have persisted for centuries among white leaders. Those who say that the wrongs of the past are history and that it is time to move forward frustrate Native Americans, for it is the ignorance of history that defines their present situation and continues to threaten their future. Forgetting and ignoring the past is not an option, but Native Americans live in a white man's world. Their challenge lies in enlightening non-Natives about their history, traditions, cultures and rights as distinct governments, while creating a prosperous future on their own terms. Entrepreneurial Spirit Entrepreneurs, such as Margaret Rodriguez, demonstrate the strong desire of Native Americans to succeed. A member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community in Arizona, Rodriguez started her company, Au Authum Kí, 12 years ago when bankers refused to lend her money. Her company generated $24 million in revenue for 2003. Au Authum Kí translates into "the people's home." Rodriguez's projects have ranged from a $1.9-million contract for rebuilding a high-tech structure to house a weather squadron at a Tucson Air Force Base to having her workers camp within the Grand Canyon, where they installed portable classrooms on the Havasupai reservation. She also started a charity last year that builds homes for members of her tribal community who can't afford them. The entrepreneurial spirit isn't unique to Rodriguez as the economic muscle of Native Americans continues to grow, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth and the U.S. Census Bureau. Americans who identified themselves solely as Native Americans and Alaska Natives numbered 2.4 million and 4.1 million when they identified with one or more races, according to the 2000 census. Most Native Americans, 43 percent, lived in the West, while 11 states comprised 62 percent of the Native-American population. Despite their small population, Native Americans are expected to see their buying power jump from $47.7 billion in 2004 to $65.6 billion in 2009. Native Americans will account for 0.6 percent of total U.S. buying power in 2009, up from 0.5 percent in 1990, according to the Selig Center. The 2001 Survey of Minority Owned Business Enterprises by the Census Bureau reported 197,300 Native-American- and Alaska-Native-owned businesses in the United States that employed 298,700 people. Resolved Question: If you wanted to go to Princeton or MIT in the field of either Science or Engineering, what would you do?

Hi, I am a freshman in high school. I am going to be in the Pre-IB program next year either at the school I am at now, or at Suncoast High School, which is the #7 high school in the nation. I am taking rigorous courses. I think I am smart enough to go to either of these schools, but I know how hard the admissions process is. Just last week, I took the PSAT, and felt I did rather well on it, but a little better on the math portion. I study for the SAT on a regular basis. I am in Key Club, Tri-M(National Music Honor Society), UN Club (for human geography, I am in AP), and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). I want to major in Science or Engineering (maybe even both?!). I am in FBLA to show that I am well rounded. I hope to be voted Secretary of the UN Club. Next year I am going to be in the National Honor Society hopefully, and the Spanish National Honor Society, along with Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society). In the beginning of my junior year I think I will qualify for the Science National Honor Society. I do get good grades, and once again, I am in IB. So, I just really want to know that everything I'm doing is right; but mostly, what ELSE I can do. What else can I do to best prepare me for MIT, or an Ivy League? Please give any and all suggestions you have. Your contributions will be VERY much appreciated. Thank you so much. more

Resolved Question: Have you noticed that even LDSers think 0bama and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee are mornons?

Quotes from Utahns on Obama's Nobel Prize The Salt Lake Tribune Updated: 10/09/2009 06:48:56 PM MDT "I don't think that Iran will suddenly wake up and say, my God, we're dealing with a Nobel Prize winner, here." Bob Seltzer, Salt Lake City, a Westminster College administrator "As Americans, no matter what your politics, people ought to be pleased that our leader, our president, was singled out for this honor -- the same way we were pleased when a professor from the University of Utah won a Noble Prize." Bob Seltzer, Salt Lake City, a Westminster College administrator "That is so ridiculous. First of all, why is he making efforts to reach out to the Muslim [world]? There are so many other issues close to home I feel should be dealt with before you go outside. Reagan, Lincoln and Washington, they never got any Nobel Prizes, and they were the ones who deserved it." Elizabeth Pedersen, Salt Lake City, student "Frankly, I think the best thing Obama has done for us relating to peace is end America's terrorist panic the Bush era brought about. That's what he should get the peace prize for." Roger Bourke White Jr., Taylorsville, business and technology writer and student "As much as the recognition is for him, it is a recognition that the United States is a leader in international diplomacy and that we, as a nation, have made a renewed commitment to international diplomacy and peace in the world." Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon "It was premature. He may do some great things, but let's wait and see before we start giving awards." Brent Warnock, Bountiful, Salt Lake Community College adjunct instructor "He's a good president. I'm all for him getting the Nobel Peace Prize. If he's reaching out this way [to other countries], I think that's good. It's not wrong to talk to people, right?" Kelly Klick, Salt Lake City student "People have done a lot more and not gotten a Nobel Peace Prize, but as far as the people in leadership positions and in power, he's doing a lot more. He's doing what no one else is doing, and that's kind of what the Nobel Peace Prize is about." Heather Stout, Salt Lake City, server and student The award "sends a message to the world that our leaders, and we as a people, are serious about working for peace." Allan Smart, Salt Lake City, vice president of the Gandhi Alliance for Peace The Nobel committee has appropriately recognized "that President Obama in a short time has reinvigorated diplomacy, improved our country's stature in the world community, and revived hope for peaceful resolution of international issues." Scott Matheson Jr., Salt Lake City, a professor at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney School of Law. The President is right to see the award as a "call to action -- both an affirmation and an inspiration for nations to work together to reverse nuclear proliferation, address climate change, eliminate terrorism, and end armed conflict." Scott Matheson Jr., a professor at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney School of Law. "Obama deserves credit for convincing much of the world that the United States is a nation that can once again be trusted with global leadership. This might just say how important it is that the United States does fill that leadership role." Michael Minch, Draper, Utah Valley University director of Peace and Justice Studies "The gold medal might hang heavy around Obama's neck as a standard upon which all of his future actions will be measured. There's no doubt that it will now be something of a burden." Michael Minch, Draper, Utah Valley University director of Peace and Justice Studies Lisa Schencker and Matthew D. Resolved Question: Is Eight Year Med School a possibility for me?

I just started my senior year and this pretty much what Ive got [ I go to a pretty well ranked public high school in the California Bay Area] I have a remotely decent GPA of 3.88 unweighted and a weighted GPA of 4.45 I took literally all the hardest classes I could [ I took a lot of equivalent community college courses that are transferable to most colleges] I am the President of my high schools Future Business Leaders of America chapter and I have placed nationally a couple times I am the shift leader at the hospital I volunteer at I interned in the stanford department of neuroscience over the last summer I attended the COSMOS UC summer program for seniors I am an officer of my high schools Student Doctor club I am and active member in Speech and Debate and I have placed third regionally Active member of Mock UN club Varsity soccer for three years Varsity volleyball for two years I got 5s on all four of the AP courses I have taken so far { bio calc bc chem statistics] I have an SAT score of 2250 SAT II Math: 770 SAT II Chem: 760 SAT II Physics: 770 SAT II US History: 780 PSAT:221 I am definitely interested in an 8 year med program but I am afraid that my GPA and my SAT as well as SAT II scores might be just out of range for a well established program. Colleges I am considering are UCLA, Brown, Rice and Boston College. I also plan to apply to all the UCs for neuroscience/pre med. I have been told that for the colleges I want to go to for an 8 year med program thousands of students apply for some 30 or so seats. I am not going to be so arrogant as to believe that I come in the top one percent of some of the brightest students in America. Plus, i don't want to have to pay the ridiculous application fees and go through the trouble of writing essays if I know for sure I am well out of reach for Brown, UCLA and Rice. If you have any suggestions as to other colleges I should consider please let me know Thanks more

Resolved Question: THE ILLUMINATI AND NEW WORLD ORDER?

Some of the best videos on the illuminati and New World Order - signs in television, music and films. Music artists speak out against the illuminati and the 'New World Order' - MUST SEE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBKDZhu-E… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJi2HaJf1… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW43Mig1L… 'Illuminati and the New World Order' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89SB59DT… The illuminati symbols on the dollar bill - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUpQl9Sil… Now the New World Order is VERY real. It is happening before us. World leaders and religious figures have even called for a New World Order - George Bush, The Pope etc.. PLEASE WATCH this Video about illuminati symbols appearing in television and movies and world figures calling for a New World Order, it's crazy! You call it coincidences??!!! ASK YOURSELF WHY these signs and symbols would appear in films etc.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JHThf32a… "thats what the masons and illuminati want. it programs you to accept the possibility of a new world order. the epidemic shown in the movie is how they will deal with the overpopulation." Pope calls for New World Order - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAbhRxmA4… "he is pushing for a one world government and in the bible it says the first world government will be the beginning of the end of the world its leader being the antichrist I'm confused how can he preach this and still be a christian" The illuminati are a secret society founded decades ago, there goal is to create and establish a New World Order - one world government, one religion, one currency etc.. as stated in the bible before the end times. The illuminati control the worlds governments, they are the true decision makers, they are the ones pulling the strings behind close doors, they determine future world events, who gets into power etc.. they create global recessions to their benefits..They pretty much control the mass media as well - using their signs and symbolisms through music, television and films. Trouble is, more and more people are accepting this. Here is an illuminati card game from 1995 by Steve Jackson, it's pretty scary stuff, the cards foretell the events of 9/11, terrorism and the future of the world - a global virus created for population reduction [population control] in order for easier control of everyone. Title: "SMOKING GUN" PROOF THAT ILLUMINATI PLAN TO ATTACK ON 9/11 AND BEYOND WAS WELL KNOWN AS FAR BACK AS 1995. [You can still buy these card games around on the internet and on ebay and old stores if your lucky] http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n1753.cf… Some say the swine flu virus was created by the government in order for population control - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVkfDavGz… Have you noticed how much the mass media have been scare-mongering us with this swine flu business lately, scaring us and forcing us into taking the vaccine, there's such a big fuss out of it if you've noticed however people aren't taken in by it. Some people believe the vaccine will weaken your immune system over time and shouldn't take it and that we don't really know what's in the vaccine. It's been proven that the vaccine is not safe as we don't know much about it plus 1 in 3 nurses and doctors have said they will not take the vaccine. Some others think the vaccine contains the mark of the beast! A nano microchip which is inserted into you when you get the injection. Apparently, you will eventually have to take the vaccine. School kids will need it otherwise they won't be able to enrol onto schools, then businesses and the work force will use it as a health and safety innitiative - you have to have it otherwise you won't be able to go to work etc.. Apparently, you will get a fine and prison sentence in America if you refuse the vaccine. Heck, even the governments are now planning and creating MASS GRAVES ready for the second wave of swine flu which is expected to hit us this winter - Mass Graves planned - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-… and have a look on what people are saying below the article in the comments part - "MASS GRAVES??? For a flu outbreak that has not killed as many people WORLDWIDE as the annual flu does in the USA alone??? And if mass graves are needed - it's the vaccine that will kill us - not the swine flu. "For swine flu - read population control. For God's sake - DON'T allow yourselves to be vaccinated" TUPAC often spoke out against the illuminati. Some say he was killed by them. Tupac was killed shortly after his final album - 'KILLuminati' came out! Just look into it. Please WAKE UP. Resolved Question: Obama's New World Order?

Some of the best videos on the illuminati and New World Order - signs in television, music and films. Music artists speak out against the illuminati and the 'New World Order' - MUST SEE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBKDZhu-EZw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJi2HaJf1VI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW43Mig1LYE 'Illuminati and the New World Order' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89SB59DT34 The illuminati symbols on the dollar bill - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUpQl9SildY Now the New World Order is VERY real. It is happening before us. World leaders and religious figures have even called for a New World Order - George Bush, The Pope etc.. PLEASE WATCH this Video about illuminati symbols appearing in television and movies and world figures calling for a New World Order, it's crazy! You call it coincidences??!!! ASK YOURSELF WHY these signs and symbols would appear in films etc.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JHThf32azM "thats what the masons and illuminati want. it programs you to accept the possibility of a new world order. the epidemic shown in the movie is how they will deal with the overpopulation." Pope calls for New World Order - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAbhRxmA46I "he is pushing for a one world government and in the bible it says the first world government will be the beginning of the end of the world its leader being the antichrist I'm confused how can he preach this and still be a christian" The illuminati are a secret society founded decades ago, there goal is to create and establish a New World Order - one world government, one religion, one currency etc.. as stated in the bible before the end times.
