Minister dubbed servant of labour movement

Declaring he wanted to "forge an industrial compact" that would lift productivity and prosperity, Senator Carr said union participation was vital to the Government's industry working groups and to planned industry innovation councils.

He also noted he was the first Industry Minister to address the AMWU since the days of the Keating Labor government and congratulated the union for handling "everything capitalism has thrown at it" since it was established in 1852.

"Remember that hope is the currency of progressive politics," Senator Carr said. "Fear and suspicion are what the other side deal in."

Senator Abetz seized on the speech to label Senator Carr a class warrior whose "socialist rhetoric" was inappropriate for a government minister.

"The future of innovation for Senator Carr is basically being a servant of the trade union movement," Senator Abetz said. more

'Make use of UiTM design grads'

Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Musa Muhamad said the ministry would boost cooperation with UiTM in the furniture industry.

He said entrepreneurs should also open their businesses overseas to compete with Thailand and Indonesia.

"There is market potential in South America, India, Africa and the Middle East. We have also been to Dhaka and there is a big opportunity to market our products there."

He said furniture exports were expected to reach more than RM10 billion in 2010. The United States remains the biggest importer of Malaysian furniture, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom.

He said last year, furniture exports were worth more than RM8 billion.

The three-day event aims to give entrepreneurs new ideas in design and marketing, and to introduce local products to the international market. more

A race to modernize

Yunping struggled at first, but thanks to some economic assistance and encouragement from the government, he says, the budding entrepreneur was able to expand.

Today, the Chongqing Yuxin Pingrui Electronic Co. employs 600 people and makes electronic parts for clients such as Black & Decker. Yunping hopes sales this year will hit 200 million yuan ($29.3 million) compared with 120 million yuan ($17.3 million) in 2007.

The factory runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The biggest problem is finding skilled workers, Yunping says.

Vocational training

Knowing this, Chongqing has invested heavily in vocational education. In 2004, the government created "the Chongqing Vocational Education Base," a collection of both public and private vocational schools in Yongchuan, a sprawling university town located about an hour outside of Chongqing. more

The successful entrepreneur has elaborate plans for a restaurant and nightclub at the base of Fanny Hill. But Snowmass residents and town officials seem split between enthusiasm for the hip project and concern over some of its more outlandish � and arguably less-family friendly � elements. DeGraff, a Snowmass resident, owns Fun Worldwide LLC, an Aspen-based hotel and restaurant development company that operates more than two dozen ritzy nightclubs and restaurants around the country. Among them is what DeGraff claims is the world�s only Playboy Club, at The Palms in Las Vegas. DeGraff plans to build a restaurant called Junk and a nightclub named Liquid Sky at the base of Fanny Hill by next ski season. Junk will serve alcohol and healthy, organic food, and DeGraff promises families will find it affordable. more
