Venture firms, media companies plow real money into online games
Venture firms and media companies invested more than $161 million into 16 companies involved in online games and virtual worlds, bringing the total investment figure for the first half of the year to $345 million, according to a survey by Virtual Worlds Management.
The lion's share of the investment went to two companies with strong track records and significant games under their belt. Turbine Inc., which scored $40 million from Time Warner, GGV Capital and other investors, created Asheron's Call, Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online.
The other company to win big was Realtime Worlds, which bagged $50 million from Maverick Capital and others. A Scottish company with offices in Colorado, Realtime Worlds is headed up by Dave Jones, founder of DMA Design, the primary developer of the Grand Theft Auto series. more
Reliance Steel Gains After Company Ends Plan to Sell New Shares
The company has made more than 35 acquisitions since first selling shares to the public in 1994.
Reliance said it still expects to complete the PNA purchase in early August using a term loan and an existing revolving credit facility.
Net income in the three months through June rose to $156.6 million, or $2.12 a share, from $122.8 million, or $1.59, a year earlier, Los Angeles-based Reliance said July 17 in a statement. Sales climbed 10 percent to $2.1 billion.
U.S. steel-sheet prices increased to a record $1,052 a ton in June after producers took advantage of lower imports and inventories to pass on higher raw-material costs, Purchasing magazine said in a June 30 report.

Govt following dual pricing mechanism for LPG, natural gas
He further said that government has made agreements with the companies involved in natural gas business that they would be given the hike in the prices of gas in accordance with crude oil prices in the international market. He said that government has no agreement with LPG producing and marketing companies for linking the prices with international market. Shaukat Aziz led government linked the LPG price with international market to attract investors but caretaker government de-linked the price.
After de-linking LPG price with international market, government has failed to control the hike in LPG prices. Due to the dual policy of the government regarding the agreements with gas companies, the companies in both sectors are fleecing the consumers and there seems no writ of the government in controlling the gas prices in the country. more
Mendon may regulate adult entertainment
The regulations would help to control the impact of adult entertainment businesses, which Horn said can lead to an increase in prostitution and drug dealing.
"Constitutionally you cannot forbid adult entertainment from coming to Mendon," Horn said. "You can regulate and control it."
Among the regulations, touching an entertainer while he or she is performing on the stage or in the stage area would be prohibited. All gratuities must be placed at the edge of the stage area.
Sufficient lighting in the areas used by the public and employees would also be required.
Horn said he made minor changes to fit with Mendon's form of town government.
"I would like to thank Chief O'Loughlin," Horn said. "He did an awful lot of work. more

Voting Question: Is There a job out there?
I was a teacher for 23 years until corrupt bureaucrats hung me up to dry after I was assaulted by a student and came away with a torn up back and PTS. Instead of helping me they tried to twist everything around and put me at the cause. The AFT steeped in it went to court my supervisors lied on the bible and I came away with over a year of salary signed a letter that I would never work for the district after 20 years and found out after several interviews that I was blackballed from ever teaching again. From 1998 to 2007 all I could do was sub, draw out all my retirement money to live on and worked for CompUSA from 10/03 to 06/07 as lead macintosh sales person and repair. Then in 10/07 I found a teaching job at a private school teaching science. I made a major and costly move to Conroe TX and 3 weeks into the job they laid me off due low student numbers. Since then I have been out of work the blackballing even reached 60 miles from Houston and all I could do is sub and struggle to pay my bills. Besides being a teacher I am highly proficient with the Macintosh computer. I was a member of the Houston Area Apple User Group for over 20 years were I did seminars on macgames utilities and how to care for your Mac. Around 2002 I tried my own Mac business but then Enron happened and I quickly went from a 40000 a year job to less than 10000 in 5 months and had to re-enter the work force. I nearly went bankrupt. Then I found CompUSA in 2003-2007 and the damn teaching job in 2007. Now I am looking for work in the Mac industry. If anyone wants a resume you can contact me at maclewconsultant@aol.com and I will email you a copy. All I can say is I am on SSDI Food Stamp and Gods hands. moreResolved Question: I need help with my resume..?

im doing a business class at the community college and i need help with some questions: 1. in 1977 the united states passed its foreing corrupt practice act. This anti-bribery statute prohibits payments made to obtain or retain business by influencing a foreign official's acts or decisions. Several other nations followed the US's lead and passed similar statutes. How successful was this attempt to remove bribery from the arena of international business? 2.Explain how cultural issues may differ between multinational and single-country companies 3. explain why it is important for international sales representatives to understand cultural and social influences. answers much appreciated(: moreResolved Question: Grade my essay please?
I know my teacher is gonna grade it anyways, but I only have one shot at this. It's for AP American history, so it has to be like perfect. Constructive criticism is appreciated and thanks for reading I know it's very boring! And whoever can steel themselves into reading this I definitely admire you :) What caused the Roaring Twenties to come to a grinding halt? Analyze the events of the 1920s that contributed to the demise of the American economy, using economic, social and political variables. The 1920s were a decade of economic prosperity. The employment rate was high, and the productivity rate was soaring due to new technological advancements. Globally, the United States was extending it's power across the world and establishing itself firmly in the global market. However, the country was unconsciously setting itself up for economic doom. Consumers, bolstered by the new availability of loans and slower payments from companies, were making purchases that cost many times their regular salary, resulting in a doubling of installment debt throughout the country. Factories were producing more than could actually be afforded by their low-cost employees, and due to an originally successful high tariff, the United States began a global tariff war in which it quickly became the center. Extremely high productivity rates, severe political mistakes, income inequality and nation-wide loans were the leading causes to the demise of the American economy. During World War I, farmers were both encouraged to and assisted in increasing crop production. European nations looked to the US for food, and farmers found themselves gaining a steady income. However, after the war, that government assistance was snatched away, leaving farmers with debt that could no longer be paid off easily. This forced them to plant more cash crops, leading to a surplus of wheat on the market, driving prices down and impelling farmers to plant even more crops for the next year. A similar problem was occurring in factories. In an effort to match popular demand, factories produced an increasing amount of consumer goods. Factory output soared with the utilization of new machines and techniques designed to increase production, while employee wages did not rise any higher. Demand could not keep up with supply, and as a result the price of goods collapsed. Overproduction led to a severely damaged economy leading up to the Great Depression. President Herbert Hoover and his administration simply downplayed the depression in the beginning, and assured citizens that they were only facing a temporary slump in the economy. They claimed that it would actually clean up the current corrupted practices within the system. However, when the economy continued to fail, Hoover declared the government would play a strict laissez-faire, or hands-off policy, stating that the government should not interfere with the economy, but instead let it right itself. He advised American citizens to practice self-reliance and work hard. In addition to his inaction, Hoover approved the Smooth-Hawley tariff, which pulled the average tariff rate for imported goods up nearly sixty percent. This was intended to protect American goods and businesses, but the main result was retaliation from foreign nations, who ceased to buy American products. US producers were desperate for any sales at all, and were severely hurt by this move. Political practices not only failed to aid American citizens during the recession, but actually added to the accumulating disasters. By the late 1920s, income inequality was more severe than in any other time in U.S. history. More than a third of all the nation's wealth was owned by the top one percent of Americans, while the poorest twenty percent were forced to make do with only four percent of it. Very few Americans were incredibly wealthy, whereas the vast majority were in poverty or barely above poverty. There was practically no middle class, and this giant difference in classes added more difficulty to the plummeting economy. On top of this, Americans had begun making purchases on credit since the beginning of the century, agreeing to pay for their items later rather than up front. When the economy began to fall, these same people found themselves unable to pay up, and creditors were left to absorb millions of dollars in faulty loans. In addition, consumers had begun buying stocks on margin, borrowing money from a broker and then using the money they gained from their investment to pay off their debt. This led to a stock market built up on imaginary money, and eventually led to the inevitable crash of the stock market. The crash of the stock market marked the end of the prosperous nineteen twenties. In an ironic twist, the economic prosperity that had afforded such glamour and technological boom during the twenties caused the greatest economic depression this country has ever seen. Consumers, politicians and businesses alike moreResolved Question: Do you think this can explain the housing bubble in a way you will understand?
Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit. She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her bar. To solve this problem, she comes up with a new marketing plan that allows her customers to drink now, but pay later. Heidi keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers' loans). Word gets around about Heidi's "drink now, pay later" marketing strategy and, as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar. Soon she has the largest sales volume for any bar in Detroit. By providing her customers freedom from immediate payment demands, Heidi gets no resistance when, at regular intervals, she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages. Consequently, Heidi's gross sales volume increases massively. A young and dynamic vice-president at the local bank recognizes that these customer debts constitute valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit. He sees no reason for any undue concern, since he has the debts of the unemployed alcoholics as collateral. At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders figure a way to make huge commissions, and transform these customer loans into DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then bundled and traded on international security markets. Naive investors don't really understand that the securities being sold to them as AAA secured bonds are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics. Nevertheless, the bond prices continuously climb, and the securities soon become the hottest-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses. One day, even though the bond prices are still climbing, a risk manager at the original local bank decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar. He so informs Heidi. Heidi then demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but being unemployed alcoholics they cannot pay back their drinking debts. Since Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations she is forced into bankruptcy. The bar closes and the eleven employees lose their jobs. Overnight, DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS drop in price by 90%. The collapsed bond asset value destroys the banks liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans, thus freezing credit and economic activity in the community. The suppliers of Heidi's bar had granted her generous payment extensions and had invested their firms' pension funds in the various BOND securities. They find they are now faced with having to write off her bad debt and with losing over 90% of the presumed value of the bonds. Her wine supplier also claims bankruptcy, closing the doors on a family business that had endured for three generations, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 150 workers. Fortunately though, the bank, the brokerage houses and their respective executives are saved and bailed out by a multi-billion dollar no-strings attached cash infusion from their cronies in Government. The funds required for this bailout are obtained by new taxes levied on employed, middle-class, non-drinkers who have never been in Heidi's bar. Any questions? moreResolved Question: Any Shooting Range Owners From Florida?
In the part of Florida that I live, there is only one range with four stalls. It is expensive as well as run down. People go there only because they have no other place to go within a 50 mile radius. I decided I want to open a range myself and have already obtained so much data that my head is spinning, yet I still have some questions I am having trouble getting answered. I have the Florida State Statutes, County Codes and Zoning, The NRA Range Sourcebook (in the mail), USAF ETL 08-11: Small Arms Range Design and Construction, the EPA CFRs for lead, and have a couple of properties I am looking at in my area that meet code and would be large enough to suffice the range. The range will be an outdoor range that has 50m (X5), 100 m (X5), 300 m(X3), and 1000 m (X2) lanes that will have use a dirt backstop accompanied by a cement block wall. The range will allow for ammunition from .22 cal to .50 cal. Other than delivery of dirt my brother, cousin, dad, and friend will assist me in the construction of the stalls, measuring the Surface Danger Zone/Vertical Danger Zone, backstops, and targets. My cousin and myself are going to Orlando to become Range Safety Officers for insurance purposes. As business takes off I will be adding a skeet shoot and a tactical/obstacle course with pop-up targets and CQB scenarios, but those are not in the making yet (not until I have an established business). The building where business will be conducted will need to have retail space for accessories, gear, ammo, and guns for sale/rent (I have an application for an FFL but until I have a location of business I cannot send it in). I will also need a 125ft X 125ft room for conducting NRA, CCW, and security courses as well as offer free hunting courses (All but the hunting courses will be taught by either myself or my cousin). A bathroom and breakroom are requirements for a security training facility in my state. I know what is needed by the county, state, EPA, and BATFE in regards to licensing and regulations for the range and firearms, what I am not sure of is the business aspect. I was hoping someone who owns a range in Florida could help answer the few questions that I have left. Q1: I know the average mark-up for firearms and accessories in the area, but how can I find the cost of the firearms and accessories (wholesale/dealers price) or of any price breaks for bulk orders? The distributors will not talk to me until I have my FFL and I cannot get my FFL without a place for business and I cannot get a place of business without a business loan from a bank. Due to the economy and my age, 24, I am going to have to go to the bank with a DETAILED business plan and explain how they will get there money back. Q2: How do you pay a business loan back? Do you pay monthly payments (i.e. mortgage/car payment) or do you pay in back in a lump some with in so many years? If so what is the time frame it is to be paid back in? Q3: Do you know of any good insurance companies to cover my business (in Florida) and if so how much does it cost? Again they will not talk to me until I have a business. Q4: How much do lead removal services cost? The EPA mandates that a company has to come and remove lead from my dirt back stops and I'm sure it is not free. If I have the equipment am I allowed to do it myself? Q5: If you own an outdoor range in Fl, do you mind telling me an estimated cost of construction supplies for your outdoor range? Q6: I am looking a buying a large piece of land and I'm probably not going to find one with a building on it that suits my needs. Any ideas/suggestions on new construction vs. other options I am unaware of such as portable buildings (if they have them) Q7: What are the state and federal taxes (estimate of course) for running such a business in FL? Please, refrain from JUST telling me that this is an expensive business and that it will fail. I now that it will be expensive and that is why I need a DETAILED business plan for the bank. I am hoping for help with the few financial questions left to determine the over all cost and revenue I will need to acquire. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate and look forward to any responses. moreVoting Question: Why would my wife keep deleting on a continuous basis all of her inbox, sent and trash messages.?
I'm having a problem. I have been married for 4 years now. I would like to think that I can trust my wife. I don't like the social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook. I don't like them for married or serious couples unless you have absolute trust because I think that it can lead to infidelity in the relationship. I myself do not have any of them. My wife wanted to get a Myspace about a year and a half ago, but I did not agree with it, so I kept telling her that I didn't think it was a good idea. She kept bugging and bugging for one, and at this time we co-owned a business. She used the excuse that she wanted to create a Myspace to add a whole bunch of people she didn't know to spread news and sales about the business. I didn't think this was a bad idea so I finally gave in and said yes, for the business only. Well, I soon realized after this that she added a whole bunch of people, but wasn't keeping up on sending news about the business as much as she was adding friends and family that she knew and people she used to know. We closed down the business a year later do to financial difficulty and she insisted on keeping it open. She deleted all of the people that she didn't know and kept everyone else. I've been noticing over the last 6 months, but haven't said anything that she is continuously deleting her inbox, sent and trash messaged from her account almost on a daily basis. Why would she do this. Our sex has died down on her part and she is 28 and I am 30. And I have noticed this over the same amount of time. She also talked me into her creating a Facebook about 6 months ago and has been doing the same thing. I tested her a week ago and found this old boyfriend that in the beginning of our relationship when we were dating that she slept with when we were not too serious and had been secretly talking to on her cell phone for the first 6 months of us dating. "before we got married". I tested her by finding this guy on Myspace and requesting to be his friend with her account, to see what would happen next. Well a week later I checked her account and their was a 1 friend that was showing up with a "BIG RED X" AND and said deleted. Her friend request spot on her page shows empty, like I never requested him to be a friend and all of her messages, in and out and trash were deleted again. 1 Day after I did this, I came home and she told me that she wanted to delete her Myspace. Can anyone help me understand what is going on here because I really want to think my wife is not f-ing around on me. ? moreResolved Question: i am new in real estate business, what should i do to get maximum leads without investment?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate and look forward to any responses. moreResolved Question: Is this guy crazy: Wisconsin dad drives all the way to Kansas each week to hang on to a job in tough times?
JANESVILLE, Wis. – In the early dawn, after another week building cars, Michael Hanley leaves his job in Kansas. He quickly zips into Missouri, then heads up a ribbon of highway past grain silos and grazing deer, across the frozen fields of Iowa, over the Mississippi River and into the rolling hills of Wisconsin. Finally, he pulls into his driveway — 530 miles later. It's one heck of a haul: more than 1,000 miles roundtrip, 16-plus hours of driving, every week. "I like to say I gave up an eight-minute commute for an eight-hour commute," he says wearily, running a hand though salt-and-pepper hair as he watches his two sons play basketball for the first time this season. After the aging General Motors plant where he worked for 23 years was idled about a year ago, Hanley faced a Hobson's choice: Stay with his family and search for an autoworker's salary ($28 an hour) in a county where more than 40 percent of its manufacturing jobs disappeared from 2006 to 2009. Or hang on to his GM paycheck and health insurance and follow the job, no matter where it leads. In his case, it led to Fairfax, Kan., the same place his brother and two brothers-in-law — also GM workers, and now his roommates — landed. For others, it has been Indiana or Texas. The long commute is not just a story of hard times, tough choices and a shrinking American auto industry. It's also a case study of what happens when an aging industrial town loses an anchor, when workers too old to start over and too young to retire are caught in a squeeze and when economic survival means one family, but two far-flung ZIP codes. ___ Hanley is not one to complain. "GM has been good for us," he says. "This whole town knows that." For 90 years, the sprawling plant — it started out building tractors — became a different kind of family business. Through the decades, sons followed fathers onto the line, sometimes rubbing shoulders as they built Chevy Cavaliers, Caprices, Tahoes, Suburbans and more. Hanley's father and brother worked there. So did his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law and an assortment of uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. But as GM's financial troubles mounted, car and SUV sales fell and gas prices climbed, the automaker closed several plants, eliminating thousands of jobs. Janesville — then the oldest of GM assembly plants — ended production of SUVs in December 2008, months before the automaker received billions of dollars in government loans and filed for bankruptcy. (The factory is on standby status; some hold out hope it will reopen one day.) Some of about 1,200 remaining workers took buyouts or retired; some began new careers. Hundreds more stayed with GM, relocating, commuting or just waiting for an opening. The automaker has about 6,500 laid-off workers nationwide. Even before the doors closed, Hanley began preparing for life after GM. He returned to college to complete two credits he needed for an accounting degree, but an offer in Kansas came first. He didn't hesitate. Auto work these days is like playing musical chairs. You grab an opening where you can. Hanley didn't want to lose his health insurance while his wife, Laura, was receiving costly chemotherapy treatments for a blood disease that will likely lead to cancer. The medical bills last year, she says, were in the tens of thousands of dollars. "There's no way I could possibly go through one treatment without him having insurance," she says. Like many other divided GM families, the Hanleys decided even though the job was important, there were reasons not to uproot everyone: Laura works at their sons' Catholic school, the boys are immersed in band, Scouts, basketball and church, and the sale of a house was an iffy and perhaps money-losing proposition. Hanley knew it would be a trade-off — financial security for a lonely existence. His eyes mist as he talks about what he misses: dinner with his family, coaching basketball, going to the YMCA with his boys, wrestling with them at night, attending their concerts and games, watching them grow up. "It's an adjustment, not being home," he says. "I probably sounded cruel because I said I wouldn't miss my wife as much because she's going to be there when I come back, when I retire. But those years with the kids aren't going to be there. That's the hard part, not being able to be around them. ... I don't know if I really appreciated it before." Hanley plans to commute another 18 months, until he turns 50, hoping for a retirement package then — something, he says, he "prays about every night." Laura, meanwhile, does double duty as a single parent. It's all overwhelming — working, shuttling her sons around, keeping an eye on her elderly mother and worrying about her husband's long commutes. "The kids are tired of seeing mom cry because she's stressed and seeing dad cry when he needs to go back to work," she says. "We're really close — the four of us. I want to apply this onto my business idea but I don't know how google is paid because I have always seen on the Ask.com website a small print saying powered by Google. I also want to have a big or fairly big company{online business} back up my searches for my website. But not having enough sources to do my research, this has brought on more doubts in my head which is why I would like to know how Ask.com gains its profits and how google gets paid by Ask.com. However, if he increased the price too much, he may end up loosing money. He has asked you to determine how much he should raise the price in order to maximize his profit. the current profit is $2 per ticket. youve surveyd customers and found that for every 50 cent increase, 800 customers would be lost. for example, if you increase the ticket price to $6, you would loose 1600 customers. We own a small business and we have a several locations. I want the managers to all be able to access and edit the same data ( customer prospects, sales records, etc) from an internet connecting. In other words, even if it is a desktop program, can it pull data from a server so that multiple users can all see and edit the same stuff? if not, what CMS system can do this? We are at different places but all need to access and edit the same data. For instance if a new lead comes in at one location, they add the info to the cms system and then the other locations can see and update the same data. Adrian Anderson In this essay I’m going to discuss how Martin Luther King’s early life affected his philopshy and beliefs on civil rights. I believe that to a strong extent racism affected his thoughts and views dramatically But the question has to be asked what influenced king decide to take it upon himself to start a revolution to get equality between the races as almost every if not every single black person received segregation. Due to the work that he and others done to break down the barriers has had an everlasting effect as although it’s not perfect but there is equality between all races and racism/segregation isn’t institutionalised/sewed into society. King was brought up in a religious background with both his Father and grandfather being ministers. He was bought up with the mentality that all people deserved respect regardless of their race, this may of led him to believe that the African Americans deserve. Although as a young child he said was determined to hate every white person but he soon changed he’s views as he became older. From a very young age King experienced discrimination for example he’s friends father told his son not to play with King due to the fact that he was black. This may of lead him in future to stand up and make a change as he didn’t want he’s kids to go through the same things that he went through as a young child for instance when he instance he had to tell his daughter that she couldn’t but ice cream in certain area’s due to the fact that she was black this may of led to he’s I have a dream speech where he says say’s “I have a dream that my daughter may not be judged on the colour of her skin but by the contents of her heart” King was an extremely intelligent child and attended Booker T. And Martin Luther King during his life experienced an immense amount of racism and probably more so in his younger years. He’s been to restaurants were he’s been refused service due to the fact that he was black and when he demanded service on one occasion he demanded service and on an another he had a gun pointed at him. But in both of these instances he knew that he wasn’t going to get served as he went in there and the only reason he went there was to create a scene to try to voice the issue and making people take notice even if it’s that on a small scale or walking through the streets with thousands of people during his later life on a greater scale. King during he’s younger days was in love with a white girl and was advised by he’s own friend’s to stop seeing her due to the fact that he was black and she was white. This may of lead him to become angry and upset due to the fact that one of the loves of he’s lives, he can’t marry hear due to the fact that he was black and she was out of he’s league so this may of made him determined to break down the barriers between the races so that everybody if free to love who they choose regardless of their race I believe that one of the factors that contributed to King making a stand against racism is the way that the USA and in particular “down south” states such as Georgia we institutionally racist so that may of restricted him in what he really wanted to accomplish in life as he’s 1st choice profession wasn’t being a pastor and he may of felt that getting held back due to any difference especially the colour of your skin as wrong and he wanted he’s children and future generations of African American children to be the best that they can be to be the best that he can be and that as he was a Christian he wanted to live with he’s brothers and sisters regardless of their race. Cars of the 1930s The Automobile Industry resisted the depression and welcomed a new look for cars throughout the 1930s. The stock-market crash lead into the Great Depression, nonetheless the farming and middle-class families did not entirely give up on cars. Throughout history cars have been the nation’s symbol of security, comfort, and leisure. The “drop-frame” construction lowered the car’s center of gravity. The Ford 1932 V-8 significantly introduced the “drop-frame” appearance. Ford’s 1932 V-8 design brought the car’s height down from the high perch of early automobiles. It’s engine was moved over the front axels and the hood was expanded outward. Its sixty-five-horse power capacity gave the car strength. Many people including Clyde barrow favored this car, he said, “I have drove fords exclusively when I could get away with one. For sustained speed and freedom from trouble, the ford has got every other car skinned. Even if my business hasn’t been strictly legal it don’t hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V-8” He and Bonnie Parker had stolen a 1932 V-8 in Texas. The 1934 Chrysler and Desoto Airflow models cut the edge of engineering and aesthetic auto production. The first car to feature a unified body and chassis was the airflow. The car had sturdiness on the road and a roomier interior. Despite the public found it unattractive, Chrysler structured the advances learned from the airflow into its line of mid-priced sedans. Due to the great depression, the production of all vehicles fell 36 percent in 1930. It then fell 29 more percent in 1931. In 1932, it fell to about 1,300,000 vehicles, the lowest ever since World War one. GM’s Alfred P. Sloan had a strategy called “constant upgrading of product” or planned obsolescence, which meant encouraging consumers to trade up and blanketing the market with a car at the top of every price range. Later “constant upgrading of product” was called sloanism and moved GM to the top. Sloanism emphasized trade-ins and styling. The styling department at GM made cars appear lower and longer. The 1932 Cadillac was the first car to eliminate the separate box-like trunk. By the end of the 1930s US Auto manufactures had established a unified structure, lower, wider passenger compartments that went throughout and up to the 1950s. Aerodynamic styling, or streamlining, meant modeling their new cars on the design principles of high-speed trains and airplanes. This resulted in better speed and fuel economy, made the ride smoother, lessened wind noise and car’s drag. The once-separate body and chassis merged into a unified body. Independent automakers failed throughout the depression years due to the low sales. Car companies that ceased to build were Kissel, Ruxton, Mood, Dobel, Jordan, Stearns, Gardener, Marmon, Peerless, Du Pont, and more. Not all went down; five companies survived Charles Nash, Hudson, Packard, Studebaker, and Willy-Overland. The number of U.S. Automakers dropped drastically from 108 in 1923 to 44 by 1927. The big three were Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. Large Automakers lowered their prices on their cars to stay in business. In 1930, it was recorded that sales in the auto industry had dropped 2 million from 5 million, just in the previous year. The depression affected the countries entire economy. The big three got a bigger share of the market from the fall of the independent automobile companies. Their share increased from 75 to 90, over the time period since the 1920s. Due to the plant closings, jobless workers, and low production the United Automobile Workers (UAW) Union was founded in Detroit, in 1935. The depression led many workers to strike and believe unionization was the only way to protect themselves from corruption of the companies. In 1935, congress passed the National labor Relations Act (NLRA), which outlawed the heavy-handed measures the companies had been using to break up unions. General Motors spent close to one million from 1934 up to 1936, the reason was for guards to patrol its plants. On May 26th, 1937, UAW leader attempted to hand out flyers at the main gate. They were stopped and trapped, who were beaten along with women, reporters, and photographers. The event became known as “Battle of the overpass.” To close down many plants, the UAW used the sit-down strike. This in effect did stop labor. By 1937, the UAW succeeded against GM and Chrysler. Ford continued to stop unionization. Ford Workers walked out on April 1st of 1941 causing the River Rouge Plant to close. In 1936, strikes by workers led to improved working conditions and wages. moreResolved Question: Business letter writing. HELP? 10 points..?

Until last week, I worked as a sales manager for a mortgage company in Scottsdale, AZ. I managed a team of loan officers who worked on leads purchased by the company. I didn't not ever personally utilize the company provided leads and had referral business. My contract stated that I would be paid 70% of the gross revenue generated on my own business. It also stated that I would be paid a management "override" on what the team I had supervised produced less certain percentages of their marketing expense. There were 2 separate components to my pay plan. When negotiating my position, I made it very clear that I would not want my own production affected adversely in the event the team's production wasn't enough to cover their costs. My pay plan was written this way and addressed the 2 separate components of my pay plan. My team's volume fell short during a couple months and my Manager withheld close to $7,000 of my pay that would have fallen under my separate 70% plan. This was against our verbal and written agreement, but I was told (by her) that she can withhold whatever she deems appropriate. Do I have any recourse? moreResolved Question: Business and Family.......I know, I know?
but here's the deal. My brother and I started building websites about a year ago, and everything was great for a while. Then he decided to pull a little power play, hired some of his idiot friends to cut down costs and left me holding the bag. Recently, I have gained a solid lead on a new contract.......one that could be worth 5 times the normal value. He caught wind of it, and now he's acting like nothing ever happened, in fact, he tried to sweet talk me into giving him the contract while I take a finders fee. (sigh) I can actually do both the sales and tech work, but it would mean that I would have to start my OWN, competing business. This would obviously ruin our relationship as he has a fragile ego and would probably turn other family members against me......and then I'd have to tell them about his past actions.......and you see the viscious circle this presents. I don't really want to start my own business because of the cost associated with it, but I'm not about to take 10% for a deal that could be worth over 20K, either. How would you work this situation in order to maximize your return, and still be able to not go down the road of competing with the "family" business moreResolved Question: At age 21 and under $40,000 in debt, how can I figure out my passion and what I want to do in life?
So recently I turned 21 and I'm going to be finishing my Junior year in college soon. I'm trying my best to keep up my GPA and it's around 3.8 right now. I'm majoring in business. But the fact of the matter is, I still don't know what my passion is, and that bothers me a lot. I don't want to be a kid anymore but I feel like I still am. With graduation in sight and unemployment rumors everywhere, I feel stupid just trying to graduate. I see some of my mature friends with a firm goal in their mind, like going to Med school, or becoming a physician's assistant, or lawyer or something like that. And that's really awesome and they know exactly what they want to do. But I don't have that kind of a goal. And I don't want to be one of those kids who just drift into jobs and watch life go by. So I guess my question is, how did you find your passion? Is there anything I can do right now to find my passions so I don't continue to waste time pursuing something I really couldn't care less about? I picked business as my major because frankly, well, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. And I thought maybe a lucrative job in business would be good and I would be kinda good at it too working with people and projects and leadership and sales. But I know it's not a passion. It might even turn out that I'm good at it or something like that but ... it's not a passion in any definition of the word. When I see my peers get excited about some financial tool they learned in class or Bank of America internship or something like that, I kind of want to throw up. I am already like $40,000 down the hole with tuition loans so I know I have to try to get a job as soon as possible after graduation. I feel stupid for having invested so much money into my bachelor's degree in business like this ... when I'm like 3/4 of the way done, and just confused as shit because I didn't care about initially finding my passion and jumped right into a career path without any research. What do you think I should do? just stay focused on my Bachelor's degree until I graduate with high grades so I can get a good job right after graduation so I can pay off my loans as fast as possible and try to look for something else that excites me along the way? I know I'm a creative type, a good writer, have a sense of humor and good instincts as a performer and director on stage, good at leading people, solving problems ... but incredibly opposite from banking or investment or finance ... just math in general moreResolved Question: Does anyone have any comment on my decision to buy Praesepe (PRA) shares?
Praesepe plc is an AIM listed company with the specific purpose of consolidating the very fragmented UK and European AGC (the technical phrase for Amusement Arcades) industry. The plan is to build a business by acquisition with EBITDA of £100m within 2 years and to exit, via means of a trade sale, on an 8x multiple. The CEO, Nick Harding, started this journey once before as CEO of Talarius plc. From June 05 to Jan 07 he grew Talarius to become the largest UK AGC operator (200 sites), taking the share price from 80p to 280p in the process. His plans for Talarius were cut short – in a nice way – by an earlier than expected, acceptable offer to sell to an Australian based trade buyer on a 9x multiple. The expectation was that Talarius, under its new ownership, would continue with its acquisition plans but, due to problems in its home market, it hasn’t. Nick’s no compete clause expired and he began the same journey again with Praesepe. This time he and his main backers are more determined to reach the £100m EBITDA target and an early buy out offer is, therefore, less likely to be accepted. Praesepe is at the early stage of its journey. At the time of writing it has 54 sites across the UK, EBITDA for the 6 months to July 09 of £1.14m, a strong deal pipeline and a market capitalisation of £17.8m. The main shareholder (38.5%) is Marwyn – a big backer (and beneficiary) of Talarius previously. It is committed to the plan and is unlikely to sell out before the target exit. Depending on the size of the business being bought, Praesepe has acquired sites / groups of sites on EBITDA multiples up to 7x, with the average around 5.2x. Nick Harding is President of BACTA (the AGC trade body) and is well thought of in the industry across Europe – this makes doing deals that bit easier. On acquisition, sites are usually rebranded (Cashino), refitted with new machines on a revenue share model with leading manufacturers (uniquely for the industry – lower capex requirements / no ‘failed’ machines) and the operations are sharpened across the board. Based on The Crystal Room (so far the flagship Praesepe site in Leicester Square, London), such actions have a dramatic impact on revenue and earnings: The Crystal Room weekly revenue is +60% versus the weeks before the acquisition was completed. Acquisitions will be funded by a mix of new equity and debt. Currently there are 220m shares in issue, with 400m authorised. Have in mind that there is the potential for dilution unless further investments are made as new shares are issued. If the business sells for £800m with 400m shares issued, that is £2 a share. Compare that to the 8.5p market price today and, if you believe that the AGC market will follow the rule of consolidation and that Nick Harding can repeat and build on his previous success at Talarius, then it is worth a look. moreResolved Question: R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 6)?

So, THE QUESTION: which songs are the better of each these match ups (even if it's only the lesser of two evils in your eyes)?if you listened to this one Justin Bieber song -- feel free to ignore my "listen to every song" rule for future Justin Bieber songs (oh, and there are like 5 more of those things on the list.... thanks, tweens). moreResolved Question: statement of purpose, please help me with it, i welcome any change, thank you!?
As an international Chinese student in the United States, I believe that I have a great deal of business, academic, social, and cultural experience that will allow me to fit in well and contribute to the international flavor of Lund University. One of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in entreprenership. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since business issues research involves a lot of complex and intricate relationships among parties who are aiming at different goals, and the application of basic math, communication and psychology skills. Over the past four years in college, I have been working part-time with my own business, Shining SIM Card, set up when I just became a college student. I was the president of student government and am also an active member with SSE - Siemens Solar Energy. I have assisted my father in his project to supervise and monitor the process in his company during my breaks. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer Lund University. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of Shining SIM Card that I managed in Dalian, China, where I have been working as a manager since 2005. Entreprenership, as a field, had always fascinated me right from my middle school days, and being an entrepreneur to contribute its utilities to mankind is the life long dream and career objective I persue, it is worthy to devote energy and commitment to found my own business and lead it success. Shining SIM Card, my first big step on my enterprise career, compared with prior experience, grew up from only one employee to fifteen, the main consumers from one campus were enlarged to other 6 big universities and also some small schools of the local city when I graduated. Most of my customers were college students, as a student myself, it was easy for me to do surveies, to know the popular tastes, and the most impressing way to promote the business with very limited resources. The advertisement form developped from hand writing poster on wall to big colorful advertisement scroll and products propaganda for freshmen annually. The goal for advertisement is let 60% of the students consider my products first when they are about to purchase, and let them to introduce us to the rest 40%. Also I had an online sale shop for the convenience of customers, which has been in operation for 5 years. Run my own business required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing events to completion. A good manager is one who can figure out where problem lies and may happen, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problems I saw at Shining SIM Card had to be resolved to sustain the company. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities. The business climate has never been more friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. So that leads me to my application for an entreprenership program at Lund University, and I wish to develop an idea based on research from Lund University, during the master year. moreResolved Question: 1. Hi, Our tax advisor is out of country. We are seeking your help and advise. IRS is examining our 2007 personal return. They asked us to send supporting documentation for Schedule C expenses we claimed: 1) Other Expenses 2) Vehicle Expenses To give you background, we were in Cleveland, Ohio and exploring for business opportunities in 2007. Initially, from Jan through May, we traveled to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus during weekends through some leads. Also we were looking for business through online websites and newspapers. In May, we had found a gas station for sale in about 20 miles from our place. We talked to the seller. Based on what he said, the business seemed promising so we wanted to purchase. He asked us to put a 10k deposit and so he can start training as we had no idea on gas station business. Also he indicated that it may take about 4 - 6 months to transfer ownership as its a name brand gas franchise. We believed his words and put a $10K deposit with a bill of sale agreement and started training and paperwork with the franchise to transfer ownership. We had gone to the franchise corporate office for interview and exams as well. The seller promised that we can get our deposit back if we back out or transfer process doesn't go through. From May through September we had training almost everyday. It seemed like business wasn't doing very well due to competition on the other corner. Before proceeding further (its already too late :-), we decided to go to a CPA and get his previous tax returns verified. We went to a local CPA, showed his tax papers, paid $75 towards consultation fee, she suggested not to buy the gas station as it had liabilities. Next day, we went to the seller and told him that we wanted to backout. He agreed to give our money back after few days. So went to him a few times. He said he can give in multiple payments, so he gave a check for $2,500. We deposited the check in a local bank but it was bounced. We tried sending emails, calling, and went in person. But he said he cannot give our money. We wanted to give him some time and try again. But he never gave our money back. When we were doing taxes for 2007, we explained all this to our tax advisor, he suggested to claim all this a pre business expenditure (loss) on a schedule C as follows: Other expenses: $10K (deposit lost) + $75 (CPA consultation fee) Vehicle expenses: all miles travelled However we do have check images to support other expenses. Also we do have vehicle service records avaialble to support the vehicle miles log (Dec 2006, Apr 2007, Dec 2007). IRS asked us to send completed business questionnaire plus vehicle information as well. We've all the information but not sure how to put all this together. Kindly suggest the approach. A news paper report Hourly Update Swiss ban mosque minarets in surprise vote By Alexander G. Higgins THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.29.2009 GENEVA — Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on minarets on Sunday, barring construction of the iconic mosque towers in a surprise vote that put Switzerland at the forefront of a European backlash against a growing Muslim population. Muslim groups in Switzerland and abroad condemned the vote as biased and anti-Islamic. Business groups said the decision hurt Switzerland’s international standing and could damage relations with Muslim nations and wealthy investors who bank, travel and shop there. “The Swiss have failed to give a clear signal for diversity, freedom of religion and human rights,” said Omar Al-Rawi, integration representative of the Islamic Denomination in Austria, which said its reaction was “grief and deep disappointment.” About 300 people turned out for a spontaneous demonstration on the square outside parliament, holding up signs saying, “That is not my Switzerland,” placing candles in front of a model of a minaret and making another minaret shape out of the candles themselves. “We’re sorry,” said another sign. A young woman pinned to her jacket a piece of paper saying, “Swiss passport for sale.” The referendum by the nationalist Swiss People’s Party labeled minarets as symbols of rising Muslim political power that could one day transform Switzerland into an Islamic nation. The initiative was approved 57.5 to 42.5 percent by some 2.67 million voters. Only four of the 26 cantons or states opposed the initiative, granting the double approval that makes it part of the Swiss constitution. Muslims comprise about 6 percent of Switzerland’s 7.5 million people. Many are refugees from the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and about one in 10 actively practices their religion, the government says. The country’s four standing minarets, which won’t be affected by the ban, do not traditionally broadcast the call to prayer outside their own buildings. The sponsors of the initiative provoked complaints of bias from local officials and human-rights group with campaign posters that showed minarets rising like missiles from the Swiss flag next to a fully veiled woman. Backers said the growing Muslim population was straining the country “because Muslims don’t just practice religion.” “The minaret is a sign of political power and demand, comparable with whole-body covering by the burqa, tolerance of forced marriage and genital mutilation of girls,” the sponsors said. They said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan compared mosques to Islam’s military barracks and called “the minarets our bayonets.” Erdogan made the comment in citing an Islamic poem many years before he became prime minister. Anxieties about growing Muslim minorities have rippled across Europe in recent years, leading to legal changes in some countries. There have been French moves to ban the full-length body covering known as the burqa. Some German states have introduced bans on head scarves for Muslim women teaching in public schools. Mosques and minaret construction projects in Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Germany and Slovenia have been met by protests. But the Swiss ban in minarets, sponsored by the country’s largest political party, was one of the most extreme reactions. “It’s a sad day for freedom of religion,” said Mohammed Shafiq, the chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, a British youth organization. “A constitutional amendment that’s targeted towards one religious community is discriminatory and abhorrent.” He said he was concerned the decision could have reverberations in other European countries. Amnesty International said the vote violated freedom of religion and would probably be overturned by the Swiss supreme court or the European Court of Human Rights. The seven-member Cabinet that heads the Swiss government had spoken out strongly against the initiative but the government said it accepted the vote and would impose an immediate ban on minaret construction. It said that “Muslims in Switzerland are able to practice their religion alone or in community with others, and live according to their beliefs just as before.” It took the unusual step of issuing its press release in Arabic as well as German, French, Italian and English. Sunday’s results stood in stark contrast to opinion polls, last taken 10 days ago, that showed 37 percent supporting the proposal. Experts said before the vote that they feared Swiss had pretended during the polling that they opposed the ban because they didn’t want to appear intolerant. “The sponsors of the ban have achieved something everyone wanted to prevent, and that is to influence and change the relations to Muslims and their social integration in a negative way,” said Taner Hatipoglu, president of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Zurich. “Muslims indeed will not feel safewe people have time to read a long stories but wen here come somthing which is abut islam we dun have time then. mean our musims are............we people have time to read a long stories but wen here come somthing which is abut islam we dun have time then. mean our musims are............ moreResolved Question: Could someone please grade my essay out of 6?
The question: Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Doing things in ones own way is crucial for accomplishments of the highest level to be reached. Several examples from history clearly demonstrate that more accomplishment is made when one is allowed to elaborate and complete things in a personalized way. As shown by Howard Shultz, a successful business is created by being creative and expanding on that creativity. In Pennsylvania, USA thirty years ago Shultz graduated college and applied for a job as a sales manager at a small cafe, after already having some work experience in the house ware company Ham marplast. The founders of the small cafe, Gordon Bowker and Jerry Baldwin, accepted Shultz and soon the cafe became very successful due to Shultz's tactics. A few years later Shultz went on a vacation to Italy where he discovered Italian- styled cafe's that deeply interested him. After returning to America Shultz revealed this idea to the founders of the small cafe. After they refused to change the style of their cafe. Shultz was compelled to create his own which he called "Il Giornale", which is Italian for daily. After three years Shultz found investors that allowed him to spread his cafe across the world, opening locations in the Far East, Middle East, Europe as we4ll as over 2000 location in North AMerica. By now he had changed the name of the cafe to Starbucks. Thus, because Shultz decided to continue with his original idea he was able to transform a simple idea to a multibillion dollar reality. Through the actions of Jack Welch it is obvious that personal input in a plan is what makes a plan succeed. Jack Welch joined the Company General Electric in 1960. After years of ardous work he was named vice-president of GE in 1972, senior vice-president in 1977, chairman in 1979, the finally was given the Honour of being General Electrics eight and youngest chairman and CEO in 1981. He ran the company the way he knew best, as a "grocery store". He said through this way he was allowed to get to know his eemployeesbetter and this gae him a chance to be involved in all aspects of the company. Hence, Welch's personalize way of management was proved the best way for him to go when the comany's market value increased from $18 billion in 1981 to an astonishing estimate of $80 billion in 2001. As demonstrated by Lee I acocca, using ones own tactics allows one to greatly accomplish. Lee Iacocca started his career in 1964 at the Ford Motor company, where he eventually rose to become president from 1970 until 1978. Iacocca left the company in 1979 after a dispute with Henry Ford and became president, CEO, and chairman of Chrysler Corporation 1979. With his incredulous financial handling tactics, Iacocca saved the company form bankruptcy. He restored the corporation through shrewd financial policies, a 1.2 billion dollar loan guarantee and tax concessions grated by Congress. Many questioned his risk of taking such a large loan to which he replied, "We at Chrysler borrow money the old fashion way. We pay it back." Therefore, Iacocca proved sometime for one to accomplish a goal one must proceed with what one believes in. After careful analysis of Howard Shultz, Jack Welch and Lee Iacocca one can see the doing things ones own way, indeed, leads to more success. moreResolved Question: Question for a designer?
The legislation and standards that apply to the design, manufacture, operation and disposal of products are always under review and subject to change. Companies that sell into the world marketplace must be sure that their business operations and products meet the requirements that relate to global manufacturing and selling. The design of a new product may be technically brilliant but if it falls foul of changing legislation, it will have to be withdrawn from sale and this will have serious financial repercussions for the company. On a fairly regular basis recall notices appear in newspapers asking customers to return products that are sub-standard so that they can be modified or the customer refunded. The environmental standards relating to aircraft and motor vehicles get tougher all the time and where the lead time for designing and manufacturing a new product is large, designers need to think well ahead and perhaps even take a gamble on the next ‘set of hurdles’ that they face. I want to be either a financial analyst for a bank or corporation or a credit analyst. These are my two options as of now: 1. internship at local investment office/brokerage. Some "task" duties like calling clients, preparing for and leading morning meetings, and assisting with trading. Exposure to same software Wachovia Securities uses as a trading platform. 2. internship preparing taxes. Some marketing and customer service involved. Basic knowledge of small business and individual taxation gained. The advantage would be if i exceed some sales goal Option 1 is unpaid so while a future prospective employer wouldn't know or care it matters for my decision (but less so than the experience). Option 2 will pay reasonably well. Hopefully a third option at a private equity firm will present itself but I'm not counting on it. I'm a graphic designer. I create business cards, door hangers, pamphlets, rack cards, presentation folders, etc etc etc. Here's how a sale goes: 1. Meet the customer. 2. Learn what the customer needs. 3. Bring the need home to get a bid from a company in another state who does all the work, with whom I'm not an employee, partner or anything (just another customer - or "broker"). 4. E-mail, call or hand-deliver the bid to the customer for the product the customer wants. 5. Collect the money (my cost + mark-up). 6. Send the design to the company in another state. 7. Keep the profit. 8. I was just introduced to this multilevel business last night and 'it looks to good to be true". If any company can supply me with a hotel/resort vacation for $250 each year seems way off base. I know that's not what they're promoting but, since, one can sign up multiple times this is exactly part of the offer. Is this believable. Also, where does the money come from for paying me for exiting the travel board and then exiting the express board multiple times? If the money comes from the sign up fee than the company is breaking the law. From what I.ve learned, many years now past, is that any members income must come from the direct sales of hers/his and from percentages of other members direct sales in the down line. Otherwise this is a ponsi scheme which could lead to jail. I would relish any input one might have. Another questionable aspect of this TVI Express is that it looks designed to saturate very quickly. This too could lead to some illegalities. moreResolved Question: How come I always feel lost?
I am a 24 year old man, and I was always in the gifted programs in school. However, when it comes to adult tasks that require me to pay attention to things like paying bills, writing out sales letters and following through with leads, I always underperform. I get lost all of the time just doing basic stuff; like, when I am driving it will take me hours to find a place or get to a job interview. It's like I am always lost, so I get scared to even go out sometimes because I do stupid stuff like driving in the wrong direction and it will take me 30 minutes to get from point a to point b even if I know where I am going ahead of time. It has been hard for me to concentrate on minor details that make a person successful in life and in social relationships. I always feel lost about stuff, so I take an extra half hour to get to whereever I am going. I will sometimes get lost in a conversation and it's like I don't know what to say next or when it's my turn to speak or go do something in front of the crowd. Always had attention problems, and as a result none of the 'businesses' that I have ran have never had the potential that they once could have. What's going on? Diagnosed with ADD as a kid, which was probably mainly because I got into trouble with the authority, so they chalked it up to ADD and that made it hard for me in school. Now, as a man it is making things really difficult on me and I would like to know what's going on so that I can salvage my life and make myself a successful person. moreResolved Question: Résumé help much appreciated?

I see the assumption again and again on this board that if we just cut business taxes, businesses would start hiring again. Is that really true? Suppose I operate a business (sole proprietorship, partnership, or small corporation) at a small profit. Suppose that, after the entity itself pays all taxes it might owe, I have $1 million in after-tax income as an individual. Now my taxes are cut, so I now receive $1.25 million instead of $1 million, after all taxes and other expenses are paid. What do I do with my additional $250,000 in income? I COULD hire more workers. But will I necessarily do so? There are dozens of other things I could do with my windfall--save the money, pay down other debt, invest in PP&E, give myself a raise, to name a few. Why MUST I hire new employees? The fact is that I will only hire more employees if I have something for those employees to do that will generate further revenue. If sales are not up, or if I don't see some other way to develop my business using those new employees, I will do something else with my tax cut windfall. So why the assumption that tax cuts always lead to more hiring?Andy--If "there is data that shows that within a certain range, cutting taxes will increase the number of jobs and investment in private companies," then please, show us some of that data. I would like to see it. moreResolved Question: Did you see Ron Paul's suggestion on how to end harmful Fed impacts without abolishing the Federal Reserve?
http://www.cnn.com/2009/OPINION/10/30/ron.paul.fed/ "While I would like nothing more than to see the Federal Reserve abolished, it is not absolutely necessary to do so with direct legislation. The Fed's influence comes about because of its monopolization of the creation of money. If we could abolish the government monopoly on the creation of money, the Federal Reserve would be forced to clean up its act or go out of business. Economists know that monopolies lead to reduced output and higher prices, a suboptimal allocation of resources. This applies as well to the market for circulating currency as it does to markets for any other good. In the previous Congress I introduced legislation that would eliminate the three major barriers to competition in currency and break the Fed's stranglehold on money. The first barrier: Legal tender laws, which Congress does not have the Constitutional authority to enact. Historically, legal tender laws have been used by governments to force their citizens to accept debased and devalued currency... The second barrier: laws that prohibit the operation of private mints. Certain sections of U.S. code classified as anti-counterfeiting statutes were in fact intended to shut down private mints that had been operating in California. There is no reason to ban private companies from minting gold and silver coins to compete with the dollar. All currencies are based on trust, trust that the issuing authority will not debase the currency. If it becomes known that the issuer of a particular currency is minting underweight coins, people will stop accepting that currency and that company will go out of business. If someone else attempts to counterfeit that currency and pass those coins, there are sufficient counterfeiting laws on the books to prosecute those counterfeiters. Under a system of competing currencies, it would be to the advantage of stores to accept as many currencies as they could, in order to attract a wide range of customers. Stores that only accepted one currency would see their customer base shrink. The use of credit cards could simplify things just as it does today when Americans travel to Europe. They pay in euros with their credit card, and their card company bills in dollars. The market will find a solution to any problems that might arise. The final barrier to competing currencies: Laws that assess capital gains and sales taxes on gold and silver coins. Under federal law, coins are considered collectibles, and are liable for capital gains taxes. These taxes actually tax monetary debasement. The purchasing power of gold may remain relatively constant, but as the nominal dollar value increases because of a weak dollar, the federal government considers this an increase in wealth and assesses taxes. Thus, the more the dollar is debased, the more capital gains taxes must be paid on holdings of gold and other precious metals. For individuals who may wish to use gold and silver in everyday transactions, this can quickly become a complicated and costly burden. The long-term strength of the dollar will only be weakened by maintaining the Fed's monopoly on our monetary system. Our foreign creditors are already moving to dethrone the dollar as the world's currency. The prospect of American citizens also turning away from the dollar toward alternate currencies should provide an impetus to the U.S. government to regain control of the dollar and halt its downward spiral. Restoring soundness to the dollar will remove the government's ability and incentive to inflate the currency, and provide stability to the financial system. With a sound currency, everyone is better off, not just those who control the monetary system. There are more details, statements of reasons, and discussion of why the current system is a problem in the article at the link. What do you think?Josh, how substantive of you.ci, see above. Mints created coins in our history all the time and were freely traded as gold nuggets were in the gold rush, until legal tender laws. As 'comex accepted' bullion trades on the reputation of the mint, so would money.john a, I have a counter for each point you raised but that divide boils down to whether you trust companies more than government and I do, seeing how special interests use government to write laws for companies NOW. I think they should not be 'persons' and the govt should be too small to raid us for corporations, and should police and prosecute fraud.mommanuke, actually, that is a somewhat less aggressive partial solution that has been discussed - pegging the dollar to a value range for gold. I don't like it as much, but it is better than what we have. moreVoting Question: Why did people believe McCain's advertising in the race for president?
A TV spot claims Obama once voted for a tax increase "on people making just $42,000 a year." That's true for a single taxpayer, who would have seen a tax increase of $15 for the year – if the measure had been enacted. But the ad shows a woman with two children, and as a single mother, she would not have been affected unless she made more than $62,150. The increase that Obama once supported as part of a Democratic budget bill is not part of his current tax plan anyway. The TV ad claims in a graphic that Obama would "raise taxes on middle class." In fact, Obama's plan promises cuts for middle-income taxpayers and would increase rates only for persons with family incomes above $250,000 or with individual incomes above $200,000. The radio ad claims Obama would increase taxes "on the sale of your home." In fact, home-sale profits of up to $500,000 per couple would continue to be exempt from capital gains taxes. Very few sales would see an increase under Obama's proposal to raise the capital gains rate. A second radio ad, in English, says, "Obama has a history of raising taxes" on middle-class Americans. But that's false. It refers to a vote that did not actually result in a tax increase and could not have done so. These ads continue what's become a pattern of misrepresentation by the McCain campaign about his opponent's tax proposals. ________________________ Announcer: Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough. Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000. He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama. McCain: I'm John McCain and I approved this message. __________________________ The ad continues McCain's pattern of misrepresenting Sen. Barack Obama's tax proposals as falling on middle-income families. It claims that Obama "promises more taxes on small businesses, seniors, your life savings, your family." But that's untrue for the vast majority of small businesses, seniors and individual taxpayers, who would see their taxes go down under Obama's actual plan. He proposes to increase taxes only for those with more than $250,000 in family income, or $200,000 in individual income.Funny that Fox can get away with lying all the time. It's scary how many accept FOX News as truthfull. It's more Jerry Springer type or WWF entertainment than anything. moreResolved Question: Republicans, if I was running for public office would you consider voting for me?
I am a democrat, but a moderate, not a liberal. Below are issues where i either partially or fully agree with the republicans. Gun Control: While I believe that guns should be kept out of the hands of dangerous criminals, I support the second amendment. Defend your home, go out and hunt, just be safe. I believe it is unnecessarily to tax guns and ammunition on top of the already existing state sales tax. Abortion: More pro life than pro choice. I do not believe that it should be outlawed fully, but believe that after the first few weeks, it should be outlawed due to the fact that the fetus is now conscious and feels the pain of the abortion. At this stage, it should be done only to save the life of the mother. Also, abortion should not be a free service, it should be a service you pay for, unless it is a case of rape, incest, or if the mother would die in child birth. This eliminates abortion as birth control and creates revenue for the government. Affirmative action: Harmful to true equality. Obama is wrong to support it. Military: Raise the salaries of our heroes and increase funding to troops in Afghanistan. Catching Bin Laden is a top priority. This is something I praise Obama for doing. Economy/stimulus money: Should be going specifically to education, tax cuts, pay raises for military personal, and public works projects for green energy jobs. Taxes: I will not now, nor will I ever support trickle down economics, Reaganomics etc. However, I would lower taxes on the wealthy. With trickle down, the working class cannot invest in themselves because they pick up the burden of the top five percent not paying taxes. However, if the rich are taxed at the high rate they are now, it is difficult for these companies to reinvest in new jobs. There can be a balance here. The wealthy would pay on no more than five percent of their income, and by wealthy I mean those making 150'000 plus a year. I would give tax credits to small businesses who offer health benefits to employees, and per employee hired. A low tax rate, combined with cutting wasteful spending will fund the stimulus money and may lead to a budget surplus. Immigration: If they get a visa, work for equal wages in the competitive market, they are welcome in my book. This is the land of opportunity. But, if they hop the fence and take American jobs for half pay, immediate deportation. No amnesty, and increase border patrol funding. An immigrant should not be eligible for workers compensation if they are not legal residents. I consider myself a moderate, blue dog democrat. A JFK democrat and Teddy Roosevelt progressive. I voted for Obama and generally approve of him, but do think there are some things he has done wrong. I can't see myself voting against him in 2012. Again, I am a democrat, just not a liberal. I voted for Bill Richardson in the NH primary. Above are the issues where I either partially or fully agree with the republicans. I support the democrats on all other issues, such as Iraq withdrawal, same sex marriage, health care reform, stem cell research, anti-torture, medicaid and medicare, and welfare (as long as it is temporary for laid off workers and not a way of life) moreResolved Question: How to make a good cv?
