NATIONAL COMMISSION OF PROGNOSIS SHOWS OPTIMISM ON TRANSPORT

According to the National Commission of Prognosis, 2008 will be a year with positive developments for the transport sector, with around 7,5% higher gross added value for the whole industry. Compared with 2007, there are no reductions expected in any category of transportation. The study is however thwarted by transport sector representatives, who suggest that increasing fuel prices may kill the profits. "Results in the first half of the year are worse than in 2007, with balance sheets in the red for the most part of the small and medium transport enterprises.

The big players have developed other activities and are better off, but the transport activity on its own is a source of losses," said Radu Dinescu, Secretary General of the National Union of Romanian Road Transporters. Weighing about 7% in gross domestic product, transportation is regarded as the second category of services by importance in the tertiary sector of the economy, after commerce. more

Canada businesses see inflation pressure: BoC poll

The results of the Bank of Canada survey of business managers supported market expectations that the bank would keep interest rates on hold next week, after a surprise decision to forego a rate cut last month because of a worsening outlook on inflation.

At the same time, businesses surveyed by the Bank of Canada in the second quarter were relatively upbeat on their sales outlook and investment plans compared with the first quarter, even though the economy remained sluggish.

Rising prices of oil and other commodities have driven up costs for Canadian businesses, and some plan to pass on those costs to consumers, the survey showed.

As a result, 36 percent expect inflation of above 3 percent over the next two years, up from 17 percent of the respondents in the previous quarterly poll. more

However, the company's board had decided that given the "tough market conditions" receivership was "in the best interests of our investors".

"A majority of our remaining loans are mezzanine in nature, with many loans being secured by land with development potential," managing director Shane Buckley said.

"We have been affected by the current property market downturn and the inability of developers to raise alternative funding from other financiers."
