It is expected that the Co-Operative Group will on Wednesday unveil its long-awaited 1.6 billion pound takeover of Somerfield. The acquisition would make the Co-op the fifth-biggest supermarket chain in Britain, with over 3,000 stores and annual sales of 10 billion pounds. The Co-op is unlikely to reveal the number of Somerfield stores that it expects to sell to larger rivals until the Office of Fair Trading studies the acquisition, however, it is thought that 120 of Somerfield's stores may be sold on.

Open Question: Schedule C - Pre Business Loss - Supporting Documentation?
Hi, Our tax advisor is out of country. We are seeking your help and advise. IRS is examining our 2007 personal return. They asked us to send supporting documentation for Schedule C expenses we claimed: 1) Other Expenses 2) Vehicle Expenses To give you background, we were in Cleveland, Ohio and exploring for business opportunities in 2007. Initially, from Jan through May, we traveled to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus during weekends through some leads. Also we were looking for business through online websites and newspapers. In May, we had found a gas station for sale in about 20 miles from our place. We talked to the seller. Based on what he said, the business seemed promising so we wanted to purchase. He asked us to put a 10k deposit and so he can start training as we had no idea on gas station business. Also he indicated that it may take about 4 - 6 months to transfer ownership as its a name brand gas franchise. We believed his words and put a $10K deposit with a bill of sale agreement and started training and paperwork with the franchise to transfer ownership. We had gone to the franchise corporate office for interview and exams as well. The seller promised that we can get our deposit back if we back out or transfer process doesn't go through. From May through September we had training almost everyday. It seemed like business wasn't doing very well due to competition on the other corner. Before proceeding further (its already too late :-), we decided to go to a CPA and get his previous tax returns verified. We went to a local CPA, showed his tax papers, paid $75 towards consultation fee, she suggested not to buy the gas station as it had liabilities. Next day, we went to the seller and told him that we wanted to backout. He agreed to give our money back after few days. So went to him a few times. He said he can give in multiple payments, so he gave a check for $2,500. We deposited the check in a local bank but it was bounced. We tried sending emails, calling, and went in person. But he said he cannot give our money. We wanted to give him some time and try again. But he never gave our money back. When we were doing taxes for 2007, we explained all this to our tax advisor, he suggested to claim all this a pre business expenditure (loss) on a schedule C as follows: Other expenses: $10K (deposit lost) + $75 (CPA consultation fee) Vehicle expenses: all miles travelled However we do have check images to support other expenses. Also we do have vehicle service records avaialble to support the vehicle miles log (Dec 2006, Apr 2007, Dec 2007). IRS asked us to send completed business questionnaire plus vehicle information as well. We've all the information but not sure how to put all this together. Kindly suggest the approach. I have just got a potential lead from a prospective client which may prove to be lucrative for my organisation. They have forwarded me the details via email. I am a little skeptical in forwarding this to my immediate reporting manager (who is GM-IT). He has a penchant for blowing away opportunities prematurely and doesn't command my trust and respects. The top boss (designation: VP) is a more professional guy and also the in charge of business related issues. If I forward this mail to the top boss (and I am on good terms with him), it will hurt my boss's ego that why didn't I forward these details to him and why to his boss straight away. He will also give me quite an earful for doing this. I wish to give this prospect a fair deal but am afraid that I shouldn't get caught up in office politics too. Please help me decide what to do? First, I understand that this sound arrogant so let me do this. Disabled: 20 years paraplegic, walking but not well. Broke: I have been trying not to take advantage of a system that I have little respect for, but lost my job 4 months ago. Not physically suited to much, and lacking documented education. Highly intelligent: tested 11 out of 12 years of school to be of higher intelligence than 95 percent of the schools I attended. Special placement for "gifted kids" until I moved to a state my senior year that didn't have such a program. Here's my question: I have been developing a concept for a website for several years. I have recently found that another company has started something similar but does not exploit the full opportunity available, but they Just got $25M in funding. There is only one competitor to that sight right now doing things slightly differently, but they are off to a slow start, and seem kind of half in. And, there have been 2 other companies that both went broke in earlier days of the internet seemingly doing something similar. The 2 from the past are harder to research but it seems they both spent way too much money on advertising and not enough on the business of the business. How do I protect the idea and find somebody to develope an actual representation of the full site with all of it's intricasies when I don't have any money? Unfortunately I have never written a business plan and find it rather intimidating, but I can justify and explain every little nuance, from the business, to the backend, to the marketing and the execution. It seems that one of the dead companies may have patented parts of its' process, and this too may be an issue, but phone calls and research thus far all have led to the need to spend money I just don't have. Currently I'm having a major future career freak-out. Right now I'm in my sophomore year at university completing a joint major in Business and MBB (Microbi/Biochem). I chose science because I enjoy it and am good at it; business, because I wanted to try it since the future possibilities are very appealing to me. The issue is I don't know where I want to go after I get my bachelors. Pros of Business: -I love to travel and would like to get involved in the global market. -The life of an exec is very appealing; has the potential of making a lot of money. -Many options in the business world. -I find current political and economic events very interesting (I like to keep up with the what's going on in the world). -Can come with status and power Cons: -Has the potential of not making a lot of money; business stretches across a whole spectrum from monotonous low-paying cubical work, to exciting high-paying executive positions. -From the courses I've taken, I'm not into HR (business psychology has got to be one of the most boring branches of psych), not into accounting (do not like balancing numbers all day), and economics is so-so. -Won't feel like I'm "making a difference" for the betterment of mankind. -Recession??? Sciences/Medicine Pros: -I enjoy science (mainly biological) because I find it interesting; genetics/mbb is particularly relevant to me since I have the genetic predisposition for cancer and other heredity diseases. -MD/specialist is very respectable; I like the "Dr." title :) -Can feel I'm making a difference by helping heal people as a doctor, or as a scientist, help in preventing/curing certain genetic diseases. -Even though a business career may have a higher potential to make more, a doctor has a for-sure good pay. Cons: -As a scientist (MBB), I'm not really into doing research my entire life with only the possibility of making some scientific breakthrough. Don't want to just be a lab rat with a medium pay. -Medicine is EXPENSIVE in TIME and MONEY. I don't know if I want to go to school for 4 years, specialize for another 4, and realize I don't like what I'm doing. I hear doctors have a lot of overhead, plus taxation, etc. taking years to pay off debt and actually begin earning a solid living. -Even though my grades are good, I don't know when I'm gonna have the time or money for all the volunteer stuff for med school. Policing/Forensics Pros: -I love solving problems/puzzles and find criminology very interesting. I think I'd love investigative work (whether forensic or detective work). -Dead people/bodies don't disturb me. I've found myself able to stomach more graphic scenes than some of my peers. Perhaps it's because I can become emotionally detached. -Would feel really good to catch sons of a b***ches criminals. Whether it be wife beater, or child killer. Cons: -You first need to be a cop in order to do more advanced forensic fieldwork, and I'm physically not cop material and have no interest in handing out traffic tickets for 3 years with only the "possibility" of becoming a FIS. -Sure there's civilian forensic work, but I don't wanna be a lab rat who's told "analyze this and give me results" without knowing what's going on in an actual investigation. -Forensic pathology I find extremely interesting because it's a medical/bio-based forensic field where you "investigate" cause of death etc. However, in Canada you must be a pathologist first = med school. Personality: I'm competetive, but don't consider myself a "leader" per se (haven't had much opportunity to lead, so maybe I could be if I just came out of my shell a bit?). I really enjoy solving things. Put a lot of value in having status/respect (money helps but isn't everything). Do not like monotony! Etc. Etc. I apologize this is too long. During my time I volunteer at lion dance, I took the liberty to become a leader by attaining confidence and trust within the team. This provided the opportunity to test my abilities, as I grasped the chance be ahead. My first mission was to spread the awareness of our organization by creating invitations to a nonprofit dinner, and hopefully attract some generous sponsors. Because our organization is under budget, the dinner seems unrealistic and impossible to achieve. Even then, my entrepreneurship became my best friend. My thriving entrepreneurship took control of my mind and I decided to go to visit the museums of art for inspiration. In the museum, one of the photographs stole my heart and I was lost in its beauty. The abstract of the painting enable my innovative side of my imagination to surmise and reflex on how something beautiful can come from nothing at all. This abstract became my modal for my invitation and the dinner itself. From this modal I was able to derive a motto that stood for our organization. Our motto was “Defining our present: Building our future”. Through this remarkable adventure, the experience thoughts me that in life anything is possible. This concept of struggling and succeeding influence my needs to change my major to business. This concept provided me the endurance to organized, communicate, and to be more self-aware around the community. I am emblazoned with anger and bitterness, and I don't know how to let it go. My husband had a job opportunity a few states away, and sold me on the idea of leaving everything behind. He was offered a partnership in an established business, with a great income. In no particular order, I gave up my career and benefits, my house and many of my possessions, my friends and family, an easy-going lifestyle, and general financial stability. Within months, work dried up, and rather than trying to keep things afloat, his partner bailed. He left us high and dry, and took an executive position elsewhere. We had dinner, went to a blues bar, and ended up back at her place for a night cap.....it happened. She made the first move and before I knew it we were tangled up in the sheets, I couldn't stop myself. I really didn't think I would go through with it but in the heat of the moment it seemed like the right thing to do. Now that the moment is over and a new day has dawned, I know I did the right thing. If I hadn't, I would have regretted it for life, always wondering what I missed. We actually set several lunch dates for the coming week so I know things won't be weird. Here's the details of our (my step) 21 yr old son: while in college and working part-time in a pharmacy, he tried for a short time to work for cut-co. he sold knives to randoms that are close but then came to a realization that job wasn't going to make it. previous to this experience he had a growing vision that he wanted to become a millionaire, reading many books about it and decided he wanted to lead his own life and not have to ever work 'under anyone'. he quit college because he doesn't think an education is necessary to have in life (while in school maintained great grades), quit his part-time job in a pharmacy because he considered it to be a waste of time working 'under' someone. while parents are 100% supportive and father always provides opportunities for him to do many things. no expectations for him in the house and very limited rules on him because he was trusted. he got a job working with another one of the pyramid scheme investing businesses and said this would be the job he wants to focus on (while not being in school or working elsewhere for an income). after a year of this, and a couple months ago we asked him to start paying at least his cell phone bill to wake him up to the reality of this life that he should focus on more than just this job that isn't doing anything for him, now his phone was shut off because he couldn't even pay that. his mom thinks we should be entirely supportive of him because he is our son, which is ok of course. his father thinks his son should start taking some responsibilities as once he quit school he indirectly declared he wants to become a man. the problem is, he doesn't have interest or a mind to get a part time job to atleast buy his gas and his cell phone bill. this is the only thing he wants to focus on. give our (my stepson) son more time? thoughts, suggestions? are we wrong to expect for him to start paying for things? is the mother right to say just sit back and support him without trying to push him to become more responsible? he lives with her, and poor her struggles enough to keep up with the cost of living. she is paying his rent, food, everything, and he has no thought to even pay his own gas or cell phone bill. i hate he takes advantage of this...and she doesn't seem to mind. i just hate to wake up one day and he is 26 , still without at least an education or a real job. he just hopes to become a millionaire.....your thoughts and advice? since he is not 'my' son, directly i can't say it like it is. if he were my son, i'd be sure he pursues what he wants, but stays in school and also gets a part time job to pay his bills (all of them, not just a cell phone). moreResolved Question: Blood and Gore. Reporters and commentators follow his every move and bombard the public with notice of his activities and opinions. But while the mainstream media promote his ideas about the state of planet Earth, they are mostly silent about the dramatic impact his economic proposals would have on America. And journalists routinely ignore evidence that he may personally benefit from his programs. Would the romance fizzle if Gore’s followers realized how much their man stands to gain? Earlier this year Gore experienced a notable public relations debacle. The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a state think tank, revealed that he was an energy hog. Public records show that Gore’s Nashville mansion used in one month more than twice the electricity the typical American household uses in a year: His average monthly electric bill was more than $1,359. Moreover, Gore’s household energy use increased after An Inconvenient Truth, his film about global warming, was released to ecstatic reviews. Never mind that the scientific community is divided over what causes global warming, how bad it is and how to deal with it. Gore plays Chicken Little to the media’s applause, insisting that the world is warming dangerously and that he has the solution. The ‘Cap-and-Trade’ System To resolve the “climate crisis,” Gore wants to put a cap on the production of greenhouse gases. He calls for an immediate freeze on U.S. emissions, a ban on new coal-fired power plants, tough new fuel-economy and energy-efficiency standards, renewable energy mandates, carbon taxes and mandatory targets and timetables for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Those emissions consist mostly of carbon dioxide (CO2), the byproduct of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, which supply 85% of all U.S. energy. Gore’s blueprint to save the planet moves the United States towards a command economy in which government regulators hold sway over what kinds and amounts of energy will be made available to the private sector. His principal regulatory tool is what’s called carbon-credit trading. Under a so-called “cap-and-trade” system, government places a ceiling or “cap” on private-sector emissions of CO2 and other “greenhouse gases.” Each sector, industry or business is allocated a fixed quantity of carbon credits that allow it to emit specific quantities of greenhouse gases. As an example, one tradable carbon credit might permit the emission of one ton of CO2. If a business emits more tons of CO2 than its supply of credits allows, it has the option to buy surplus credits from other firms -- or it will have to pay a fine in proportion to the amount of the excess emission. By contrast, businesses that emit less than their allocation can sell their excess credits. This system, which may sound market-friendly, is something only a bureaucrat could dream up. The twist is that the carbon market exists only because the government’s imposition of a cap creates an artificial scarcity in the right to produce energy. In a cap-and-trade system, buyers will purchase their offsets from a broker or through an electronic trading platform. In Europe, carbon trading is already a reality. Since 2005, carbon offsets have been traded electronically on the European Climate Exchange (ECX). Most carbon cap-and-trade programs also allow regulated entities to earn credits by taking actions that supposedly reduce emissions outside of the firm’s facilities or operations. In one popular version of the carbon-offset concept, firms earn credits by buying seedling trees for planting in less-developed countries. Supporters claim the CO2 intake of the trees will balance out the carbon emissions of the sponsoring firm’s industrial activity. Despite its public relations value, scientists scoff at the notion that it’s possible to plant enough trees to balance out man’s production of CO2. But carbon-offset projects are popular in the environmentalist community. More Chances to Cheat However, the most radical environmentalists reject cap-and-trade. They say it allows polluters to continue to pollute by purchasing carbon credits. That is true but irrelevant. A ton of CO2 emitted in Beijing has the same climatologic effect as a ton emitted in New York. I am in a tough situation that I am willing to share with everyone. I am currently at a crossroads. One road is leading towards the service, the United States Air Force. I would really love to serve my country with the branch that I admire the most. I am trying to acquire a pilot slot which I hope turns out to be in my favor. However, if I fail to get that slot, I may be doing a job that I wouldn't really enjoy doing and everyone knows how that can turn out; and it could really affect my performance. The other road leads into the business world. I am currently a business major with a 3.6 GPA. I have high interest within the business world specifically entrepreneurship and finance. My brother who currently resides in NY has high hopes for me to come move with him after college and start a collaboration. I don't have any doubts that we will make an interesting living. If I chose the Air Force, I will be giving up time that could be spent doing internships, specific work experience, and possibly revamping my entrepreneurial focus. I am a democrat, but a moderate, not a liberal. Below are issues where i either partially or fully agree with the republicans. Gun Control: While I believe that guns should be kept out of the hands of dangerous criminals, I support the second amendment. Defend your home, go out and hunt, just be safe. I believe it is unnecessarily to tax guns and ammunition on top of the already existing state sales tax. Abortion: More pro life than pro choice. I do not believe that it should be outlawed fully, but believe that after the first few weeks, it should be outlawed due to the fact that the fetus is now conscious and feels the pain of the abortion. At this stage, it should be done only to save the life of the mother. Also, abortion should not be a free service, it should be a service you pay for, unless it is a case of rape, incest, or if the mother would die in child birth. This eliminates abortion as birth control and creates revenue for the government. Affirmative action: Harmful to true equality. Obama is wrong to support it. Military: Raise the salaries of our heroes and increase funding to troops in Afghanistan. Catching Bin Laden is a top priority. This is something I praise Obama for doing. Economy/stimulus money: Should be going specifically to education, tax cuts, pay raises for military personal, and public works projects for green energy jobs. Taxes: I will not now, nor will I ever support trickle down economics, Reaganomics etc. However, I would lower taxes on the wealthy. With trickle down, the working class cannot invest in themselves because they pick up the burden of the top five percent not paying taxes. However, if the rich are taxed at the high rate they are now, it is difficult for these companies to reinvest in new jobs. There can be a balance here. The wealthy would pay on no more than five percent of their income, and by wealthy I mean those making 150'000 plus a year. I would give tax credits to small businesses who offer health benefits to employees, and per employee hired. A low tax rate, combined with cutting wasteful spending will fund the stimulus money and may lead to a budget surplus. Immigration: If they get a visa, work for equal wages in the competitive market, they are welcome in my book. This is the land of opportunity. But, if they hop the fence and take American jobs for half pay, immediate deportation. No amnesty, and increase border patrol funding. An immigrant should not be eligible for workers compensation if they are not legal residents. I consider myself a moderate, blue dog democrat. A JFK democrat and Teddy Roosevelt progressive. I voted for Obama and generally approve of him, but do think there are some things he has done wrong. I can't see myself voting against him in 2012. Again, I am a democrat, just not a liberal. I believe the liberal arts honors program will help me become a well-rounded person. It will help me become more analytical and thoughtful. I will not only ask why, but how, what where and when. I will look deeper on many tasks come upon in the profession I want to pursue Accounting I will be able to solve problems that my constituents will have missed because they merely scratched the surface. My communication skills will broaden and I will able to talk to customers not only on a professional level, but personal level as well. I will be able to make my business. The study abroad opportunities that the liberal arts program will offer will help me become open minded and knowledgeable on different cultures. I will able to empathize with people from different backgrounds and aid them in ways other cannot. The program will also help me enhance my leadership skills. I will be able to make ideas become reality by persuading and leading people for the necessary changes I want to accomplish. I will not become a wallflower in my career; I will be head front and center leading the way to change. JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES & EDUCATION Indoctrination in Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs is harmful to children because of the attitude that the Watchtower Society has towards education. The Watchtower Society teaches that Jehovah will soon destroy all non-Witnesses and that Witnesses will be the only ones left on the planet. They believe that the earth will be transformed into a paradise populated only by Jehovah's Witnesses. This theology is the basis for their belief that it is not a good use of time to pursue a college education or pursue a career. Since their beginning in 1884, Jehovah's Witnesses have believed that the time for the destruction of the world is just a few short years off. Therefore, throughout their history very few have sought an advanced education. The Watchtower policy until 1992 is shocking, and has been cited often by non-Witness parents to obtain custody when challenged by Jehovah's Witnesses. Here is what the Watchtower Society's position on education was up to 1992: "Many schools now have student counselors who encourage one to pursue higher education after high school, to pursue a career with a future in this system of things. Another publication of the Jehovah's Witnesses said this: "In view of the short time left, a decision to pursue a career in this system of things is not only unwise but extremely dangerous . . . Many young brothers and sisters were offered scholarship or employment that promised fine pay. However, they turned them down and put spiritual interests first." The result of the Watchtower Society's antipathy toward education is that today, Witnesses suffer the economic disadvantages that you would expect of a group that eschews education. Witnesses have a double disadvantage because in addition to generally avoiding college education, it is against their basic beliefs to plan for the future. As a group, Witnesses are generally the least educated and the poorest of the poor. There is quite strong scientific evidence to support this. In 1993, two researchers published the result of a massive survey to identify trends within the major religious groups in the United States. Barry A. Kosmin and Seymour P. Lachman called their project the National Survey of Religious Identification. The survey had a sample size of 113,000 people, including 900 Jehovah's Witnesses. Of the thirty religious groups included in the survey, Jehovah's Witnesses had the lowest percentage of their members graduate from college. So I conclude that the author was trying to make a case against the Witnesses.Having said that, I am of the opinion that the Society’s view of higher education is not at all a balanced one. If a reporter produced an article on Jehovah’s Witnesses and only mentioned the bad things we would rightly call that unbalanced and yet the society never has a good word to say about higher education. It will always mention the negatives never anything positive. Its view of higher education is the domineering one even though this ought to be a matter of personal choice. And I wonder how I will cope in persuading my future children to study hard when they are to be bombarded with demonstrations and articles constantly saying how bad getting an education is – the world is already filled with enough distractions to a child’s focus as it is.And of course the Society speaks about poor job prospects even after getting an education with no consideration that some like me love the pursuit of academic excellence. The salt in the wound here is when it then uses all that science has discovered about the world through further education to make a point in its publications. I don’t believe that it is a choice between either a spiritual education or a worldly university education. This is a false dilemma. I believe there is such a thing as a good education and certainly a bible based education, fits well within what I would call a good education.Bad education teaches people to railroad constructive criticism, indeed how not to make it and teaches how to be dogmatic. Going to university does not mean one cannot put spiritual issues first. The practical reality of getting a university education is that if you do not go you may have to work eight hours a day anyway while if you attended university you may do around five hours or less per day at lectures. If you attend university you won’t find drunkenness and wild sex orgies during the lecture. You can exempt yourself from these things quite easily. In fact universities have procedures in place to ensure peoples religious consciences are respected just as a good employer does. If you can go into the workplace you can just as well attend university.Regarding me personally I have been a witness since my early teens some twenty years now. In fact when I became a witness I was disowned by what little family I had left. So I know what I have endured for my religious freedom and choice. I also know the value of a good education because as an orphan a good education played a fundamental role in lifting me out of a world of poverty and limited choices. When I started studying to become a Witness the brother I studied with tried to persuade me to not go to university. Having just recently completed my PhD in Mathematics I am proud of the good fight I made to get a good education and the personally history that I overcame and I will forever endorse higher education. I am glad I did not listen to that brother.Sure the system of things we are living in will end but that doesn’t mean we don’t need more professionals such as doctors, lawyers, pilots etc. So I don’t see that the society has a balanced view at all. Indeed because of the fight I put up to become one of Jehovah Witnesses I will not allow people who claim to be witnesses or otherwise to question my depth of conviction. By RUSH LIMBAUGH David Checketts, an investor and owner of sports teams, approached me in late May about investing in the St. Louis Rams football franchise. As a football fan, I was intrigued. I invited him to my home where we discussed it further. Even after informing him that some people might try to make an issue of my participation, Mr. Checketts said he didn't much care. I accepted his offer. It didn't take long before my name was selectively leaked to the media as part of the Checketts investment group. Shortly thereafter, the media elicited comments from the likes of Al Sharpton. In 1998 Mr. Sharpton was found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay $65,000 for falsely accusing a New York prosecutor of rape in the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. He also played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews "diamond merchants") and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot. Not to be outdone, Jesse Jackson, whose history includes anti-Semitic speech (in 1984 he referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" in a Washington Post interview) chimed in. He found me unfit to be associated with the NFL. I was too divisive and worse. I was accused of once supporting slavery and having praised Martin Luther King Jr.'s murderer, James Earl Ray. Next came writers in the sports world, like the Washington Post's Michael Wilbon. He wrote this gem earlier this week: "I'm not going to try and give specific examples of things Limbaugh has said over the years because I screwed up already doing that, repeating a quote attributed to Limbaugh (about slavery) which he has told me he simply did not say and does not reflect his feelings. I take him at his word. . . . " Mr. Wilbon wasn't alone. Numerous sportswriters, CNN, MSNBC, among others, falsely attributed to me statements I had never made. Their sources, as best I can tell, were Wikipedia and each other. But the Wikipedia post was based on a fabrication printed in a book that also lacked any citation to an actual source. I never said I supported slavery and I never praised James Earl Ray. How sick would that be? Just as sick as those who would use such outrageous slanders against me or anyone else who never even thought such things. Mr. Wilbon refuses to take responsibility for his poison pen, writing instead that he will take my word that I did not make these statements; others, like Rick Sanchez of CNN, essentially used the same sleight-of-hand. The sports media elicited comments from a handful of players, none of whom I can recall ever meeting. Among other things, at least one said he would never play for a team I was involved in given my racial views. My racial views? You mean, my belief in a colorblind society where every individual is treated as a precious human being without regard to his race? Where football players should earn as much as they can and keep as much as they can, regardless of race? Those controversial racial views? The NFL players union boss, DeMaurice Smith, jumped in. A Washington criminal defense lawyer, Democratic Party supporter and Barack Obama donor, he sent a much publicized email to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saying that it was important for the league to reject discrimination and hatred. When Mr. Goodell was asked about me, he suggested that my 2003 comment criticizing the media's coverage of Donovan McNabb—in which I said the media was cheerleading Mr. McNabb because they wanted a successful black quarterback—fell short of the NFL's "high standard." High standard? Half a decade later, the media would behave the same way about the presidential candidacy of Mr. Obama. Having brought me into his group, Mr. Checketts now wanted a way out. He asked me to resign. I told him no way. I had done nothing wrong. I had not uttered the words these people were putting in my mouth. And I would not bow to their libels and pressure. He would have to drop me from the group. A few days later, he did. As I explained on my radio show, this spectacle is bigger than I am on several levels. There is a contempt in the news business, including the sportswriter community, for conservatives that reflects the blind hatred espoused by Messrs. Sharpton and Jackson. "Racism" is too often their sledgehammer. And it is being used to try to keep citizens who don't share the left's agenda from participating in the full array of opportunities this nation otherwise affords each of us. It was on display many years ago in an effort to smear Clarence Thomas with racist stereotypes and keep him off the Supreme Court. I'm 23 and I dated a girl for three years who I had been best friends with for 5 years before that. I was always happy when I was with her, she just had this magical calming effect on me and I thought I would marry her. She is very pretty but not necessarily a head-turner, and her energy level is a lot lower than mine, but she knows me and understands me better than anyone else on the planet. I am also extremely sociable and extroverted, and she is pretty quiet and shy. I am on a career trajectory that I feel will lead to very big things and I am certain that in a few years I will be in a position where women will literally be throwing themselves at me. I still have very strong feelings for my ex and I really miss her and our relationship, but at the same time I've been so busy with work and difficult circumstances that I haven't really had a lot of new girls, so I don't know how much of that is genuine and how much is just loneliness... I know that I can trust my ex more than anyone else on the planet outside my immediate family, and I worry a lot that when I do achieve my career goals women will be attracted to my money and status more than anything else and with the divorce rate so high I am afraid I may end up with someone who loves money more than they love me. Also business is rapidly teaching me that a lot of people out there can't be trusted and don't have integrity, and my ex is the most goodhearted person I know. But I'm also afraid that if I were to get back with my ex, I don't know if I would be happy being with someone "average" on paper when there are so many opportunities available to me and when the rest of my life is anything but average. I don't want to hurt her again (and it would be so much worse after all that time!). Right now I'm miserable either way, any thought?!?!*Wanted to add that I love and respect her tremendously and absolutely do view her as my equal, just different...I am very driven and ambitious and want to "make my mark on the world" in a very big way, and she would be content having a quieter, more traditional family life. I would be happy having that life with her too, but it would mean letting go of some of my other grand aspirations, and I also don't know if I would be content not having utilized my full potential in terms of my business. Pulling into a brightly lit plaza I subconsciously scanned the parking lot; there where numerous business that enclosed the area. Panera bread with dark red bricks that layered the entire building, giant letters spelled out the name of Barnes and noble which took up most of the plaza, Bed bath and beyond with a plain looking red sign sat off in the corner. My eyes continued searching building to building, I couldn’t help but stop at one restaurant that stood out from all others. Lit up like a retro Christmas tree with pink and blue neon lights , that made the surrounding business’s look like they where having power failures was Cheeburger Cheeburger, whose website asks you to “take a seat at the soda fountain or pull up an old fashioned chair”, and to “Turn on the fifties and sixties music”. Cheeburger Cheeburger is a restaurant like no other with a 50s style soda fountain look, and good ole’ fashioned American food .Just by Walking past the doors is like stepping through an unforgettable portal to the past. Through the use of visuals and music CheeBurger Cheeburger creates a nostalgic experience for older patrons and a firsthand learning experience of the 50s for younger customers. The music, visuals, and furniture give you a sense of actually being in the 50's. First walking into the restaurant you can’t help but notice the extreme amount of pink and blue. To begin with the top-half of the wall is coated with a very bright pink paint, gently sitting in-between the top and bottom half of the walls a wooden trim that flows parallel to the paint, lastly the bottom half of the walls is coated with an electric baby blue. More neon lights similar to the ones found outside the building follow the perimeter of the kitchen entrance as well, and yes you guessed it they are pink and blue as well. The walls themselves are veiled under dozens of pictures, memorabilia, license plates, and album covers that sit in random locations, oriented in various angles. A purple suited Joe Tex gave me a familiar smirk with a brown leather jacket thrown over his shoulder as he stares at me from the front of his album cover, a smirk that I had seen dozens of times in my grandfathers CD stand. The tables and chairs where spaced like any other restaurant, however the main difference between cheeburger cheeburger and the dozens of other eateries was the glossy metallic finish that covered everything from the chairs to the napkin holders. What completed the atmosphere was the music, The Supremes – Baby Love played as we first walked in later on Elvis, Jan and Dean, chuck berry joined the musical score. I slowly felt myself drift away off into a simpler time as I tapped my feet to the music and took in the all the visuals surrounding me. Everyone in the diner reacted to the atmosphere in there own way. For example Me and my date could not help ourselves from locking legs and staring at each other sipping our milkshake (from the same cup of course) It really felt like we where two lovebirds from the 50s sharing a shake. I started to envision myself wearing in what today’s society would be considered a formal sweater with a v neck collar and my schools high school logo on it, my girlfriend wearing a long dress that went far below the knees. An older couple laughed and giggled somewhat in the same manner me and my date did; I thought to myself if they where once in my position wondering about a time before there own. A little boy sitting with his father playing with a cardboard toy looked up at a picture on the wall and asked “what’s that daddy” the father looked up, smiled ,and replied “that’s a T-bird” which led into a conversation about the boy’s great grandfather. A group of teens sat in the corner scanning the restaurant naming each artist they recognized from the tons album covers that covered the wall. After only making it past Elvis and Ray Charles they decided to move onto something easier and started naming cars. My experience at Cheeburger Cheeburger was an unforgettable learning opportunity. Everything in the restaurant from the music to the chairs gave me an authentic feeling for what the 50s was like; it was obvious that the other patrons also gained an insight on the 50s, or simply a fresh reminder of what it was like .Throughout the night the various groups began to slowly leave .The teenagers before leaving wrote on small pieces of paper songs to download. The young child and father slowly walked to the door; the boy now an expert on his family history. Later the older couple began to rise and head towards the door. Lastly me and my date unhooked our legs, broke our stare, and made our way to the exit as well. Barack Obama Furious at General Stanley McChrystal Speech on Afghanistan The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war. By Alex Spillius in Washington Published: 7:00AM BST 05 Oct 2009 Photo: AFP/GETTY US General Stanley McChrystal According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week. The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bid. Asked if the president had told the general to tone down his remarks, he told CBS: "I wasn't there so I can't answer that question. But it was an opportunity for them to get to know each other a little bit better. I am sure they exchanged direct views." An adviser to the administration said: "People aren't sure whether McChrystal is being naïve or an upstart. To my mind he doesn't seem ready for this Washington hard-ball and is just speaking his mind too plainly." In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda. He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan". When asked whether he would support it, he said: "The short answer is: No." He went on to say: "Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support." The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House. Gen McChrystal delivered a report on Afghanistan requested by the president on Aug 31, but Mr Obama held only his second "principals meeting" on the issue last week. He will hold at least one more this week, but a decision on how far to follow Gen McChrystal's recommendation to send 40,000 more US troops will not be made for several weeks. A military expert said: "They still have working relationship but all in all it's not great for now." Some commentators regarded the general's London comments as verging on insubordination. Bruce Ackerman, an expert on constitutional law at Yale University, said in the Washington Post: "As commanding general, McChrystal has no business making such public pronouncements." He added that it was highly unusual for a senior military officer to "pressure the president in public to adopt his strategy". Relations between the general and the White House began to sour when his report, which painted a grim picture of the allied mission in Afghanistan, was leaked. White House aides have since briefed against the general's recommendations. The general has responded with a series of candid interviews as well as the speech. He told Newsweek he was firmly against half measures in Afghanistan: "You can't hope to contain the fire by letting just half the building burn." As a divide opened up between the military and the White House, senior military figures began criticising the White House for failing to tackle the issue more quickly. They made no secret of their view that without the vast ground force recommended by Gen McChrystal, the Afghan mission could end in failure and a return to power of the Taliban. "They want to make sure people know what they asked for if things go wrong," said Lawrence Korb, a former assistant secretary of defence. I'm only 24, and I feel that I ruined my life. But not because I killed anybody, took too many drugs, or performed any other criminal act. No, I feel I've ruined my life because I tried to better myself by going to college. In college, I went from computer science major (dropped that because of what I heard about these jobs being offshored), to economics major (dropped that because it would have taken an extra semester at a cost of about $10,000), and finally, to political science major. Because of working a full time job, transferring schools, not having money to attend summer semesters, it took me 5 years to complete my bachelor's degree. While doing so, I amassed a debt in the $40k range. While I was in school, I did some research as to how I could work my degree. Many legitimate job/salary websites (Payscale.com, Salary.com, CNN, MSNBC, etc.) showed the types of jobs and salaries one could expect to see after graduation with my degree and work experience. The salaries ranged from $38k/yr to $43k/yr; not bad to start out on. Well, I can say that those certainly weren't the job offers I received. The job I have now initially offered me $29k per year. I took it, because I had bills to pay. The sentiments on Internet forums such as this one have led me to my greatest fear. I fear that I will be stuck with low paying jobs that offer no career growth or advancement opportunities for the rest of my life. In addition, I fear that I will never be able to start a family, purchase a house, or simply live a financially stable life. There seems to be a widespread belief that white collar jobs are diminishing and that my degree is nothing more than the "new high school diploma". Well, I don't recall a high school diploma ever costing an individual $60k, but I digress. Trust me, I don't have an issue with confidence. I do a very good job at what I do. I have a lot of essential skills that I see lacking in even some of the upper level management people. Having taken business and advanced math classes in college and working with computers since I was 10, I have a strong background in all of these areas. I've been working office jobs since I was 17 years old. Yet, it seems that a lot of people now days frown upon college graduates. The mentoring I received in the past seems worthless. I used to hear that many people worked in fields other than what they studied in college and were successful. Are these happy days over? Have I dug myself into a hole that I'll never get out of? Is it worth going on? Bottom line...I don't want to spend the rest of my life working only to pay off my student loans. That's not a life worth living.A notoriously low paying degree? What does that mean exactly? I went to a public university that is often ranked in the top 5-10 in the nation (University of Michigan). I took Calculus classes, computer science classes, statistic classes, business law classes, economics classes. I have developed analytical skills, communication skills, writing skills, etc. STOP looking at just the degree and see what skills have been developed. High school graduates make what I make. I'd certainly EXPECT to make more than that given I am a good worker (which I believe I am).Also, I'm not expecting a six figure salary here. But to be making close to what I was making in high school and college is a tad bit ridiculous. Basically, it's like saying the skills you have added since then mean nothing.Connor B...think of it this way. My boss is quite ambitious,well and widely connected and I share his vision business-wise. I got this in email and I thought it was worth a look. Seems like this would work for all parties. "The Proposal" When a company falls on difficult times, one of the things that seems to happen is they reduce their staff and workers. The remaining workers must find ways to continue to do a good job or risk that their job would be eliminated as well. Wall street, and the media normally congratulate the CEO for making this type of "tough decision", and his board of directors gives him a big bonus. Our government should not be immune from similar risks. Therefore: Reduce the House of Representatives from the current 435 members to 218 members. Reduce Senate members from 100 to 50 (one per State). Then, reduce their staff by 25%. Accomplish this over the next 8 years (two steps/two elections) and of course this would require some redistricting. Some Yearly Monetary Gains Include: $44,108,400 for elimination of base pay for congress. (267 members X $165,200 pay/member/ yr.) $97,175,000 for elimination of their staff. (estimate $1.3 Million in staff per each member of the House, and $3 Million in staff per each member of the Senate every year) $240,294 for the reduction in remaining staff by 25%. $7,500,000,000 reduction in pork barrel ear-marks each year. (those members whose jobs are gone. Current estimates for total government pork earmarks are at $15 Billion/yr). The remaining representatives would need to work smarter and improve efficiencies. It might even be in their best interests to work together for the good of our country! We may also expect that smaller committees might lead to a more efficient resolution of issues as well. It might even be easier to keep track of what your representative is doing. Congress has more tools available to do their jobs than it had back in 1911 when the current number of representatives was established. (telephone, computers, cell phones to name a few) Note: Congress did not hesitate to head home when it was a holiday, when the nation needed a real fix to the economic problems. Also, we had 3 senators that were not doing their jobs for the 18+ months (on the campaign trail) and still they all have accepted full pay. These facts alone support a reduction in senators & congress. (Obama, Clinton and McCain worked their day jobs while campaigning and were not those three they are talking about), Summary of opportunity: $ 44,108,400 reduction of congress members. $282,100,000 for elimination of the reduced house member staff. $150,000,000 for elimination of reduced senate member staff. $59,675,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining house members. $37,500,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining senate members. $7,500,000,000 reduction in pork added to bills by the reduction of congress members. $8,073,383,400 per year, estimated total savings. (that's 8-BILLION just to start!) Big business does these types of cuts all the time. If Congresspersons were required to serve 20, 25 or 30 years (like everyone else) in order to collect retirement benefits, tax payers could save a bundle.
