Childcare star in running for business accolade

ENTREPRENEUR Bolanle Ogunleye has triumphed over personal adversity to successfully establish her own childcare business.Now the Newham woman has been named one of London's top ten 'business heroes' in the Barclays Trading Places Awards.If she wins the competition she will pocket £2,300 worth of IT equipment and £10,000 from Barclays, or half that as a runner-up.The awards, now in their fourth year, are supported by Jobcentre Plus and The Prince's Trust and recognise people who have overcome various barriers and battled against the odds to positively change their lives by setting up in business. Living in London, a far cry away from her home and family in Nigeria, Bolanle found it hard to juggle family life, work and, most importantly, to find affordable childcare.It was after talking to other mothers and realising they too had childminding problems that Bolanle was inspired to provide a solution.Having a passion for caring for children and after struggling to find a suitable job, starting a business that offered affordable, reliable and safe childcare seemed a perfect solution. more

Lenders get blame for subprime crisis John L. Johnson

I am or have been a banker, corporate executive, entrepreneur, teacher, certified cash manager, real estate broker, public servant, small business advocate, volunteer and, of course, a consumer. Perhaps in deference to my varied background, I am often cornered and asked my opinion on current events. Moreover, I am often asked to explain in simple terms developments in the topsy-turvy and confusing business and financial markets. The subprime lending crisis is a case in point.

I got a call from my son, who has a subprime mortgage but did not realize it until his floating rate mortgage reset to an almost unaffordable payment. Reports of the subprime and foreclosures crisis were all over the news and he had questions and concerns. What are subprime mortgages? What caused the subprime mortgage crisis and what are its ramifications? What do the lady name Fannie Mae and the gentleman name Freddie Mac have to do with anything? Who’s to blame for the crisis? What can an effected homeowner do?

Subprime mortgages are high-rate loans for borrowers who, due to poor credit or income, cannot qualify for lower interest conventional loans. more

Renewables and corruption

A few years back, I met with a powerful Greek entrepreneur, who was trying to find a way to react, because the then Minister Of Development, A. Tsohatzopoulos, had pushed a bill at the Parliament that was trying to simplify the procedure for investing in renewable energy production. The entrepreneur showed me that the bill, before being voted, demanded for an investment 60 different kinds of certificates and after the vote their number had grown up to 145!

This is the situation the Spanish companies face. Mr. Tsohatzopoulos has taken his place in history, but Greece remains tragically backwards in an area where it should have been a pioneer, that is the utilization of sun and wind for the production of energy. Just for the record, the Greek entrepreneur, who's the head of a big and serious company, has find ways to grow, inside the climate that the Spanish determine. more
