First Horizon exec to leave tomorrow
With a strategic overhaul under way, First Horizon essentially no longer has any emerging national businesses, and that (in so many words) was the reason cited for Meyerrose's departure.
"As the company continues with its restructuring and repositioning strategy, particularly the focus on Tennessee banking and capital markets, the Emerging National Businesses will be discontinued as a separate business area of the company," the filing said.
Two weeks ago, First Horizon announced that CFO Bryan Jordan would take over as CEO on Sep. 1.

It actively recruits businesses the area, advocates for existing businesses and produces events like the downtown Summer Music Series. DWSP moved just last week. Its old office is already filled by the local campaign of presidential hopeful Barack Obama. That office is only temporary, though. It will close after the November election. DWSP’s new home is the Chatham Building at 305 West Fourth Street, which also houses Brew Nerds Coffee, Associated Artists of Winston-Salem and the Arts Council. "This is a very central location in downtown," said Glenda Keels, vice president of the DWSP. "We’re almost at the center, there’s a lot of energy on the streets, a lot going on and we believe we’ll be able to operate very nicely out of here." Resolved Question: Why does the Obama administration want to punish the banks? Is it Constitutional?
Ex Post Facto: The tax attaches to banks that took TARP funds that were offered by the government to shore up the financial system. This was—and remains—perfectly legal. Yet now banks are being penalized for participating in the government program. Severe: The tax is expected to confiscate hundreds of billions of dollars from the banks, which surely qualifies it as severe. Courts have found that to be the punitive confiscation of property. Punitive Intent: Obama’s remarks introducing the tax proposal sounded very vindictive to almost everyone who has heard it. Joe Biden emailed Coakley supporters in Massachusetts that Scott Brown's opposition to the tax was "a perfect opportunity to show where his loyalties lie -- with working families in Massachusetts or with the bankers on Wall Street who helped lead us into the mess we're in -- guess who he chose?" That's the language of punishment for the financial crisis. No Legit Purpose: There’s no other legitimate purpose to the tax but to punish banks for being bailed out. It will probably be argued that the tax will reduce risk at banks—but if that were anything more than a pretext the tax would be permanent rather than expiring when the TARP is fully repaid. And the government cannot argue that the purpose is the collection of revenue—that would be an absurdly broad rationale that would exempt any confiscation, fine or tax from the ban on Bills of Attainder. Targeted: The tax is obviously targeted at the large banks that took TARP. No one expects the list of banks that qualify for the tax to grow, and Obama’s proposal actually exempts the automaker TARP recipients. The courts have ruled that corporations count as individuals who cannot be targeted in this way, so there’s no getting around it by saying Bank of America isn’t a person. And just because there are dozens of banks that will be taxed doesn’t mean it is too broad to qualify—the Supreme Court once ruled that a law aimed at the entire membership of the communist party counted as a Bill of Attainder. Unavoidable: There’s nothing the banks can do to avoid the tax. No management changes or better risk controls will exempt them. There is literally no new regulation to comply with in order to avoid the penalty. Hi, Our tax advisor is out of country. We are seeking your help and advise. IRS is examining our 2007 personal return. They asked us to send supporting documentation for Schedule C expenses we claimed: 1) Other Expenses 2) Vehicle Expenses To give you background, we were in Cleveland, Ohio and exploring for business opportunities in 2007. Initially, from Jan through May, we traveled to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus during weekends through some leads. Also we were looking for business through online websites and newspapers. In May, we had found a gas station for sale in about 20 miles from our place. We talked to the seller. Based on what he said, the business seemed promising so we wanted to purchase. He asked us to put a 10k deposit and so he can start training as we had no idea on gas station business. Also he indicated that it may take about 4 - 6 months to transfer ownership as its a name brand gas franchise. We believed his words and put a $10K deposit with a bill of sale agreement and started training and paperwork with the franchise to transfer ownership. We had gone to the franchise corporate office for interview and exams as well. The seller promised that we can get our deposit back if we back out or transfer process doesn't go through. From May through September we had training almost everyday. It seemed like business wasn't doing very well due to competition on the other corner. Before proceeding further (its already too late :-), we decided to go to a CPA and get his previous tax returns verified. We went to a local CPA, showed his tax papers, paid $75 towards consultation fee, she suggested not to buy the gas station as it had liabilities. Next day, we went to the seller and told him that we wanted to backout. He agreed to give our money back after few days. So went to him a few times. He said he can give in multiple payments, so he gave a check for $2,500. We deposited the check in a local bank but it was bounced. We tried sending emails, calling, and went in person. But he said he cannot give our money. We wanted to give him some time and try again. But he never gave our money back. When we were doing taxes for 2007, we explained all this to our tax advisor, he suggested to claim all this a pre business expenditure (loss) on a schedule C as follows: Other expenses: $10K (deposit lost) + $75 (CPA consultation fee) Vehicle expenses: all miles travelled However we do have check images to support other expenses. Also we do have vehicle service records avaialble to support the vehicle miles log (Dec 2006, Apr 2007, Dec 2007). IRS asked us to send completed business questionnaire plus vehicle information as well. We've all the information but not sure how to put all this together. Kindly suggest the approach. I have just got a potential lead from a prospective client which may prove to be lucrative for my organisation. They have forwarded me the details via email. I am a little skeptical in forwarding this to my immediate reporting manager (who is GM-IT). He has a penchant for blowing away opportunities prematurely and doesn't command my trust and respects. The top boss (designation: VP) is a more professional guy and also the in charge of business related issues. If I forward this mail to the top boss (and I am on good terms with him), it will hurt my boss's ego that why didn't I forward these details to him and why to his boss straight away. He will also give me quite an earful for doing this. I wish to give this prospect a fair deal but am afraid that I shouldn't get caught up in office politics too. Please help me decide what to do? I want to make sure its safe for the investors. I’ve come up with several concepts to make it work. I’m a website marketer. I see so many sites online up for sale that people can’t buy on their on. I think if we get a few (100 or so) people to invest money but also partake in the business this could work. That is only if the investor wants to. With my expertise in marketing and the combined efforts of all the investors this can be an enormous venture that flourishes. I think the key to getting people to invest is making sure they want loose or be scammed out of their money. On the other hand a little off topic, there is the auto surf market. (This is just to prove a point) The autosuf industry is still going very strong. People invest thousand of dollars in the market. They never know what can happen to their money. Yet they continue to invest. There are many incidences where the owner runs off with everyone’s money and nothing can be done. For those of you who don’t know what the auto surf market is here is an example. You get paid 12% for 12days. In the end that’s 144% return 44% profit. So if you invest $1000 you get 1444 back in like 18-20days because of processing time. Everyone knows it will crash. They don’t know when it will. I don’t recommend this industry, because it’s very risky. The point I’m trying to make is there should be enough people out there that can actually invest in something that there is almost a 0% chance of loosing money and a 100% chance of gaining. I’m not going to ask anyone for any money up front. I think we should build a base of people willing to invest first. Then we all can decide what to invest in. With me leading the process.
