<Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. I'm looking for a list of business that would sponsor my trip to the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. The trip is around $3000 and it is the summer. I am a high school student that lives in the triangle area. Thanks for the help. moreVoting Question: Which academic summer school/camp should I choose?
Hi, I'm a freshman in high school in US (Los Angeles, California) and I'm aiming for top universities like Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc. I am taking all the advanced classes I can and receiving top grades, and I want to get new experiences this summer at educational camps. I took the PSAT and received offers to go to summer school at Brown University, Oxford/Cambridge Prep Program, National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC), and Academy of Business Leadership. I researched these programs and asked my counselor about them, but I'm having a hard time deciding which to choose. I will have to pay tuition and transportation myself plus non-refundable registrations fees ~$500 each. My family's not very rich even though we can afford them, but I want to make sure they are worth it and hope to get scholarships when available. If you can please take a minute and help me it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED, seriously. If you have personal experience to share that would be AWESOME. Here's a brief description of the programs. Brown University in Rhode Island offers a lot of courses on their campus and the tuition is ~$2000 a week. There's basically every subject imaginable to choose from. The deadline for scholarships is already past. The Oxford/Cambridge Prep Programs will be held on the respective campuses in UK and it's ~4 weeks for $6895. You choose a major and a minor to study, kind of like in college. Scholarships application also ended. NSLC has a site at UC Berkley which is ~5 hrs away from me. Classes are more focused on business, law and medicine. It's ~2500 for 10 days and scholarships applications are due March 26. Academy of Business Leadership's program Summer Business Institute (SBI) has various college campuses close to me so it is most convenient. The 7 week program cost ~$5500, 4 week ~$3700, I don't think there is a choice of courses. Scholarship deadline unknown. I believe the UK experience would probably be most fun/interesting and look best on paper or something, and the SBI program is probably most convenient. There is, of course, no guarantee that I will get in any of them, though I did receive invitations. If you have any thoughts about them, PLEASE share them with me. I'm not sure which one to go to, if any, is it too early or too overrated? Again, any help would be appreciated. I didn't expect my question to be this long, sorry but thanks in advance!I haven't decided my major in college or what my career will be. I'm thinking Psychology, but it's not my focus yet. I think business related knowledge will be useful in life anyway, and all the programs offer that. moreVoting Question: Are there any good music/film companies that offer internships to Undergrads in CA?
It's my senior year coming up next year and I'm looking to go somewhere where I know I may end up staying. I'm looking to live perhaps in CA given my interests, I've been there before and I liked it. I'm really looking hard for places in the Bay Area or south of it, that offer internships to Undergraduates. In 2011 I'll be graduating with a B.A. in Business and Mandarin and my ultimate goal is to get into a leadership/management position somewhere in either of those industries. Republicans are supposed to be the rich party and the intelligent party.Yet after not(count slowly) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,but 8 years of leadership they have not improved the lives of any ordinary American. The rich got tax cuts,Oil companies got tax breaks that they did not need. And large corporations got their cuts as well. All stupid decisions which economic experts warned the Bush administration about. Those tax cuts made by the rich Republican George Bush, caused the stability of the world economy to collapse. It is ordinary Americans who purchase goods which keeps businesses and the stability of the world economy healthy. If people pay to much taxes they will not be able to spend like the way they used to before Republicans destroyed the American economy and the world economy. And also it is rich owned greedy companies that hire illegal immigrants because they refuse to pay legal citizens the proper base pay. Some of these citizens fight in the military so that some bad terrorist will not disrupt their selfish, rich, greedy way of life.Furthermore it is Republicans who do not want you to have good health care and then they try to scare people by saying Obama is a muslim and that he was not born here and that the government has death panels. In this day and age. It shows the desperation and unashamed tactics and the twisted mentality of a Republican and the rich. They will do anything to have control of everything.Even lie to you.Their lies caused this disaster. And when a Republican lies to you be careful! Many innocent people will suffer and many will be caught off guard like the way we were when we found out that our taxes are going to pay for some greedy, fat bastard, loser bank c.e.o.'s failed bank, because he spent the clients money on his selfish wife and on a stupid greek costume party that you and I paid for. She dominates conversations with them and expresses strong viewpoints on most matters. Although she is a good worker but she dominates has caused problem to the new Manager of Department X. Today you directed your subordinates to change a certain work procedure. The change is one that has proven superior wherever it has been tried. Soon after giving the directive, you noticed the workers talking in the group, with Megan the obvious leader. March 21 - April 19. The Falcon, also sometimes the Hawk (Aries). This personality takes flight easily; wishing to soar above the earth and view it from the highest perspective. This personality is often both a messenger and a hunter. Loyal, brave and insightful, the Falcon/Hawk seeks spiritual truth and often will settle for nothing less. This personality is often a messenger of higher truth and prophetic insights, and sometimes writes or speaks about these subjects. If you are not like-minded, it may be difficult to communicate with this soaring Animal. April 20-May 20. The Beaver (Taurus). Hard-working and practical, this personality is driven to accomplish goals; easier when the goals are self-directed. You can always count on this personality to get a job done; Beavers always finish what they start. Beavers often show us how to build a good foundation - for ideas, relationships, life-style. Beavers are great dreamers, who are often able to make their dreams come true through hard work and inspiration. May 21-June 20. The Deer (Gemini). The gentle, graceful deer is one of the more compassionate personalities in this tradition. Deer personalities are sensitive, and likely to take off, if spooked. Deer personalities can hide themselves quite easily; they will only reveal themselves if they feel safe. The deer is a great, protective parent - highly intuitive and agile. If a male deer wanders onto your path, and it has antlers, count them. Their number may be a key number in your life. June 21 - July 21. The Salmon (Cancer/Moon Child). Salmon long to go home; they will meet many challenges to return there. Salmon personalities are persistent and driven. Salmon personalities are water-signs, much as they are on the Zodiac as Cancers. As such, the Salmon person is likely to be moody at times, but also imaginative and sensitive. Generally, the Salmon has many keen ideas, but must be careful to ground them in reality (this relates to the vision of how the Salmon lays its eggs on rough ground). July 22-August 22.The Cougar (Leo). The cougar is lightening fast; determined, stealthy and cunning. This personality is known for leadership, bravery, foresight, much like its corresponding sign on the Zodiac, Leo. It is best not to take the Cougar personality lightly and to respect this person’s integrity. The Cougar person has the strength and agility to accomplish much. Do not attempt to undermine or engage in battle. The Cougar will not hesitate to strike back, if pushed to do so. August 23-September 21. The Bear (Virgo). Connected to the earth, this personality is protective of both its territory and its young. The Bear has great strength and great power, some of which is physical; some of which is intuitive and healing. Bears do not like to fight, but will do so, if provoked. If troubled, this personality is best left alone until s/he can work out their problems. The Bear has great power in the Native American tradition. September 22-October 22. The Raven, and sometimes the Crow or Dove (Libra). Highly creative and spiritual, this personality is often mystical and hard to read. Raven/Crow people prefer harmony and dislike uncertainty. Just when you think you understand or “know” this personality, be aware s/he may change or shift their opinions and their preferences in a flash. The Raven may reveal and interest in both the creation and admiration of the Arts. Raven/Grow people are mysterious, but also highly spiritual. The Raven is greatly respected in the Native American tradition. October 23-November 22. The Snake (Scorpio). Much like the corresponding Sun Sign, the Snake personality is capable of regeneration and transformation on a high-level, unknown by many other personalities. Snake people also are capable of being devious and slithering out of responsibilities - particularly in love relationships and business. If properly guided, a Snake personality is capable of transforming and turning around any partnership or project. For the most part, snakes are often solitary and self-contained; an important factor to keep in mind. Transformation is a hallmark of the Snake personality; the shedding of the old in favor of the new is easier for the Snake personality than for most other Signs. November 23-December 21. The Owl.(Sagittarius). Wise and all-knowing, the owl prefers to come out at night. A great, skillful hunter, the Owl keeps watch over its territory and is always on alert. Both observant and sensible, the Owl personality is not so easily distracted or entranced. To engage an owl, you must be equally as practical and keen. Owls take nothing for granted and neither should you when you meet an Owl person. Remember to listen to what s/he has to say, because this Sign has much accumulated wisdom to teach. December 22-January 19. The Goose (Capricorn). Some people tend to write off the Goose, as being “silly,” but an equal or larger number remember the Goose that laid the golden egg. And so it is, wisorry...my text got cut pieces is Wolf! so....lucky you! moreResolved Question: What can I do to improve my college application (summer programs, internship, activities, etc)?

I'm also on the Leadership Team One award I have received is State Science Fair 1st place for a study on energy and windmills Basically, what is the best thing I can do over the summer to improve my application (summer program for college credit, business internship, community college, other?), and what can I do in general (maybe business related); maybe clubs outside of my school or activities? I've heard summer programs at colleges are just a way for them to make money during the summer and while they do show you can handle college classes, so does a strong performance at a community college. Also, a summer program is way too expensive for me if it does not carry exceptional benefits over just attending a community college. In addition, I've searched for business internships in my local area and they seem non existent for high school students. One last thing! Would it look better taking a 4th year of Latin instead of a 5th AP class i.e. Chem. As of now I plan on taking AP Chem and taking the SAT II Latin test to show my level of education in Latin (possible exemption from taking it in college with >650) Thank you for any help! moreVoting Question: i need help on this question-----home work?

I ask because I cannot. Looking over the cloture votes and the legislative agenda, it appears the Republican leadership is attempting to filibuster everything. They appear to be trying to shut down the Senate. If it were not for small groups of Republicans breaking rank to join Democrats to vote for cloture on things like tax cuts for businesses that hire new workers, nothing new would be going on in the Senate. Am I missing anything? They even filibustered funding for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.Paybacks? Never in the history of the Senate has the filibuster been used this much. It's nearly doubled previous records, and this year is on track to double that near doubling. Every single day the Senate is in session there's an attempt to filibuster. The Jobs bill was filibustered. Just because some Republicans broke ranks to end the filibuster doesn't change that. A bit long but please bear with me, it boils down to 3 simple questions in the end. A fuller view of my situation can be found here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Agr.tSvKC970Y4TWpGoxDjzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100302165531AASyBjL Our theatre company started in late 2008 and has dwindled down since mid last year. The main problem was that we were mostly 19-year-old-know-nothing-college-students recruited by a set of wannabe pastors who wanted a lot of hype, and I ended up responsible for this organization I never really wanted to join. However, we managed to agree on some mutual values and envision what this organization stands for (i.e. to pool together young aspiring artists in a fun and creative environment which emphasizes a character of integrity, commitment, and competence; so that one day they grow up to become influential professionals who endorse the right values in society), and because of that, for most of this org's existence I've been leading it passionately as president. I'm an inexperienced 24 year old (was 23 then) who took performing arts major in my fifth attempt at college because I wasn't in a position to have a go at in high school; but I know I'm never ever going to be a professional performer. I mostly relied on my conceptualizing, leadership, and communication skills in directing this org. People tend to trust me to lead things because I'm charismatic, intelligent, confident, care deeply about the world around me and am willing to take risks to make it a better place. Nevertheless, I had very little influence in creating a proper understanding in the minds of my teammembers of what this org stands for (despite having written organizational charts and hours of visioneering meetings with subdivision leaders), and very little authority to excercise work ethics and discipline. I delivered very little and it's eating up my self confidence. Now this founding couple we're leaving is a businesswoman who sells apartments near my campus and her husband pastors a wannabe church. No performing arts experience! They always talk about these big fluffy dreams the average person has no chance of attaining, claiming that with God everything is possible and that faith is all about believing that God gives you the power to attain things bigger than you as long as you put Him first. They take credit for helping us magnify our capacities, become independent and accountable. However, in hindsight, I honestly believe that they're cheapos preying on eager, naive students who would work for free in order to expand their business and ministry, which they have trouble differentiating one from the other. If their main concern was really the morality and carnality of the young generation, then they would invest a lot of time in helping us properly building our foundations: long term vision, day to day mission and objectives, concrete definition of core values, and basic skills like financial management and healthy boundaries. But instead of these, they're scheduling hype: battles of bands, singles' night out, hip hop dances with fireworks--which they keep recruiting new people for and have no idea how to follow up. And they expect me to MC these shows and send a team of my kids to support them. I feel so cheated. Since this couple isn't communicating--well, they talk to me while working on a laptop, or have other friends around when I want to get to the nitty gritty over lunch--I've concluded that the issue is not them being an imperfect leader, but rather their lack of good character and trustworthiness. Due to my lack of authority without the endorsement of a senior couple, I have seriously considered disbanding because we simply can't exist without one, and I have more important things to do. However, this does not reflect my commitment to the vision, as this very same vision always recurs in my life no matter what I do. At the last minute, the five members remaining onboard insisted that we carry out without the pastor wannabes and part with them on good terms. Our next step is discussing our team's purpose, envisioning the kind of cultural movement we plan to initiate, translating those in terms of daily activities and attainable achievements, and networking to find a new senior couple to replace the one we're leaving. This new couple must be a couple who cares about, prays for, and are actively taking action to reestablish righteous moral values, accountability, community life, pride in tradition, loyalty and dedication, and true artisanship in the lives of young aspiring artists. They should have experience as a performing artist themselves, and preferrably pastor a real church (not a wannabe one!) or are involved in some type of discipleship ministry, but know how to implement the principles in a secular context. (We're NOT a Christian org, but most people in our Southeast Asian society believe in God and practice a religion.)1. How do I say a final goodbye to our first mentor couple and leave them no room to "give us another chance"? I just want to thank them for the initiative but make it clear that we can no longer work together, and hope that this doesn't affect our friendship. What if I can't reach them in person? 2. How do I step down from leadership A.S.A.P? Nobody else in the current team is ready to takeover, and I am underequipped to bring this team's vision to fruition. I'm getting married, and have other obligations like finding a real job so I can support myself. However, I want this org to make it and feel responsible for laying down the foundations leaving it to a deserving leader. 3. What needs to be in the organization chart, and how to make a volunteer organization actually buy into this? Who should, and how are rules to be enforced while we have no senior couple in the meantime to mentor us and edify the president's authority? Thoughtful solutions appreciated! Thank you for reading :) moreResolved Question: What must I do from now on to get acceptance into Harvard?

What to say to members?
We started late 2008 when a businesswoman doing business near our campus (she also happens to pastor a wannabe church with her husband) invited all our class for lunch intending to recruit us to do a neighborhood christmas performance which could serve as a "promotional tool" for our campus's new performing arts major. I wrote a storyline for it, not because I wanted to get involved, but because my classmates who kept harassing me about it accepted my terms that I will only do it if we're allowed to perform about the birth of Jesus. To my surprise, my storyline was selected and I was appointed as both scriptwriter and producer. The businesswoman connected us with most people she knew who might be able to support the production, but expected us to raise our own funds and pay the bills. She claimed that she was helping us becoming independent and facing the dynamics of real business when we later in life become real artists. Her wannabe pastor husband was frequently in the office to give us motivational talks and "teaching". Together we projected this org to be a community where aspiring artists are equipped in commitment, character, and competence, so they will grow to become influential people who have the right set of values once they work in the entertainment industry, and get to build up stage experience in an environment which values integrity and accountability. The production was relatively successful, considering that we did a 45-minute play (incl good costumes, make up, stage, lighting, props, decorations, music and kitchen sink) with only 6 weeks preparation. However, people got mad at me for pushing them so hard and setting a standard of excellence and discipline. So by post production evaluation we'd already lost 90% of our cast and crew. The businesswoman wouldn't stop asking me to raise money to pay the outstanding bills about the equivalent of US$5,400. This production has also caused our formerly tight knit class of 40 to drift apart; and gotten us with trouble with our campus which wasn't informed. Long story short, the org remained active from January-July 2009. We tried organizing miniproductions and workshops to make money to pay the bill, but these were unsuccessful. As soon as we got a real TV cinematographer/performing artist on board to co-lead a production with me, it turned out that he was just interested in me because he'd been in love with me for two years and kept it a secret. Realising that this org was hardly becoming what we projected it to be, we called off the production and attempted to restructure the leadership to first educate them in a proper understanding of our vision, mission, and core values. We recruited a new HR but he turned the organisation into a bible study and neglected the performing arts side, and we didn't know what to do with our non-Christian members. In all this, the businesswoman left us although she kept her office open for the theatre company to meet daily at. She became busy with other things; amongst others, gaining political power in other neighborhoods so she can recruit other enthusiastic, talented kids to do for her what we did for her. I've had to MC for some of these events, rather surprised to find that she and hubby had cast the same vision on those other projects. I feel cheated because they should've invested in us--the committed ones--instead of throwing hype here and there with these new untrained people they can't even follow up. Wannabe-pastor hubby continued devoting once a week for what was left in the theatre company, giving motivational talks and convincing us that we are not working hard enough to fulfill our potential. We're hitting a brick wall, but brick walls aren't there to keep us from the dream; it's there to separate us from those who don't really want the dream badly enough. By August 2009 I've had enough. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to invite Mr & Mrs Wannabe Pastor for lunch or dinner AT MY PLACE in order to talk things out since May 2009 but they always cancel last minute because the Mrs had to show up in court or had other business. Otherwise, when I do get to spend time with them somewhere, they always have other people with them so I can't say what I've been wanting to say. At this point I believe that "imperfections in the leader" is no longer the issue; the issue is the integrity and character they've been preaching about but don't have themselves. They're not helping us but using us to expand their business and ministry (which they can't separate one from the other) on our time, money, and energy. And I don't want to do that to the people I am leading, because life is too precious for that. Now I no longer talk to the couple and refuse to pay the $5400 bill because I never signed anything stating that it was my, or the org's obligation.I've kept these things to myself because I was afraid of what it would do to the dynamics of our team; or worse yet, our friendship. I tried looking for a new adult couple to mentor us--which both shares our vision but also can apply it to the performing arts--but it looks like it isn't going to happen. And if it does, it's probably not worth the wait. Tomorrow is our final meeting where I will dissolve the organization and return any money my team members have ever donated to it. How do I do so without compromising my integrity? I said that I believed in the vision and will pay the price to make it happen, but now it seems like I'm the one walking out on it. And how do I present the facts without defaming our former mentor couple? While we are cutting ties professionally, I also don't want to hurt any remaining personal friendships my teammates might still have with them. Many thanks!Thank you. Actually, we did have an organization chart like Erika USAF Mom said, which we used to reeducate our leaders during down time. Unfortunately they weren't interested in this and just wanted hype. I will write a letter as CGBaker suggested, as no business should be left unfinished. My fiance said that we are lacking experience and funds. I have a great vision and all the best intentions for this org, but I shouldn't be leading such an org with great responsibility yet. I should first spend some years working elsewhere with similar projects and values, gain skills and insight, then lead an org like this. Then again, I wouldn't have been so passionately dedicated to this org if it had nothing to do with my life's purpose: "Welcoming God's children in God's house and equipping them to fulfill their purpose". Ventures breathed by this purpose is what I spend my life on, but now's not the timing to go at this one. Thank you for believing in what this org stands for. God bless! moreResolved Question: Disbanding my theatre company due to ethical issues in leadership. What to say to members?

And I don't want to do that to the people I am leading, because life is too precious for that. Right now I am notnot talking to this couple anymore. I've decided to not pay the $5,400 bill. I didn't sign anything that stated that it's my, or the organization's obligation. I've been keeping these things to myself because I was afraid of what it would do to the dynamics of our team; or worse yet, our personal friendship. I tried looking for a new adult couple to mentor us--which both shares our vision but also can apply it to the performing arts--but it looks like it isn't going to happen. And if it does, it's probably not worth the wait Tomorrow is our final meeting where I will dissolve the organization and return any money my team members have ever donated to it. How do I do so without compromising my integrity?I said that I believed in the vision and will pay the price to make it happen, but now it seems like I'm the one giving up on it. And how do I present the facts without defaming our former mentor couple? While we are cutting ties professionally, I also don't want to hurt any remaining personal friendships my teammates might still have with them. Many thanks! moreVoting Question: Will I be able to get into NYU?
I'm extremely worried that I'm not going to be able to get into NYU. In freshman year, my average was around 3.00 GPA. In sophomore year, my GPA was around 3.75 and I took one AP class while the rest of my classes were honors. This year I'm doing horrible! I received a 2.97 GPA for first marking period and a 2.67 GPA for the second marking period. I'm taking 3 AP classes and the rest are honors, also I'm in FBLA (Future Business Leadership Affiliation), if that helps. For more information, I won an award that was given by President Bush in 5th grade and I won another award that featured me in a art magazine. I plan to do much better in the second semester and I plan to take a full schedule next year to succeed their recommendations (and of course, many extra curricular activities). I have not taken the SAT, but I'm studying hard to reach their needs. If you have any other things you think I should do, please don't hesitate to tell me. All help will be appreciated, thank you. moreResolved Question: Is a master's in international relations/mass communication worth taking out 50 K in loans to pursue?
I graduated from college about a year ago now (Spring 2009), and I haven't had any luck landing jobs. I had a BA in communications with a minor in international business. I had a good GPA, did two internships, studied abroad, and held a variety of leadership roles for my university. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck landing a professional entry level job. I've been accepted into a few graduate schools concentrating in mass communication and international relations. I definately want to pursue graduate school, and I think a master's degree will open up some more opportunities. However I don't want to waste 2 more years, and take out more loans to be in the same boat, but I just don't see any other options. Should I go for it and take out the loans to do it?? moreResolved Question: Your opinion: Would Herman Cain be a good replacement for retiring Ga. Rep. Congressman John Linder?

Freshman year I got a 3.67 GPA first semester (unweighted) & 3.875 GPA 2nd sem (unweighted). Sophomore year...this year...I got a 3.67 GPA (weighted) first semester but for 2nd sem, I'm on track for a 4.2 GPA (weighted). Next year the max GPA I can get is a 4.7 but I'm guessing I'll get around a 4.2-4.5 the whole year if I stay focused and same with senior year. Also I've finished a lot of credits at a JC..I have finished most General Breadth Requirements and am working on completing my AA. I have danced for 10 years, played piano for 10 years (am level 5 in certificate of merit), intern at a radio station, worked for a TV station for a year, and have 2 leadership positions. Not factoring standardized tests ex) SAT/ACT tests, do I have a good chance of getting into a UC or private like USC? I want to go into mass communications & business. If the illegal aliens weren't breaking the law by being here in the first place, would there be a need for comprehensive immigration reform? †††††††† Our Time to Fight for Immigration Reform is Now Democrats have become the party of "I can't," while Republicans have become the party of "I won't." But the overwhelming majority of Americans (conservatives, independents and everyone else) is saying, "Get to work on our nation's problems and fix the broken immigration system!" While the pundits, naysayers, and quitters in Washington are telling everyone that nothing can get done, the Campaign Reform Immigration FOR America is enlisting the American people in a massive effort to force the hand of the House, Senate, and President to finally fix our broken immigration system. You can feel the rumbling in the pews, at the town halls, and at overflow auditoriums across the country. In January the campaign organized more than 150 events across 40 states, that could barely accommodate the overflow crowds of Americans who wanted to voice their support for immigration reform. * In Denver, CO an overflow crowd of thousands cheered Senator Michael Bennett's pledge to champion comprehensive immigration reform in the U.S. Senate. * In Grand Rapids, MIhundreds gathered with community faith leaders to call on their elected leaders to get a comprehensive immigration bill done this year. * In Charlotte, NC overflow crowds gathered at a meeting of African American and Latino community leaders to show overwhelming support for reform. * 1,000 gathered on a cold night in Little Rock , AR to urge Senators Lincoln (D-AR) and Pryor (D-AR) to support immigration reform. * And in Ohio, a series of events all over the state culminated in a rally of thousands in Cincinnati - that included leadership from the African American, labor and business communities . * All this followed not long after more than 60,000 Americans mobilized for a single telephone call in October of 2009 with supportive leaders of reform in the U.S. Congress. In the last month, communities of faith have exhibited a courage and clarity that we wish our elected leaders would show. Religious leaders from across the theological and ideological spectrum and Members of Congress kicked off a nationwide mobilization called "Together, Not Torn: Families Can't Wait for Immigration Reform," that included the delivery of more than hundreds of thousands postcards to Members of Congress from people of faith in their states and districts. Over the course of the President's Day recess, local leaders from churches, small businesses, labor locals, and community organizations across the country descended on district offices. Americans in Ohio, Alaska, Arkansas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and other states met with their Members of Congress to ask for comprehensive immigration reform to move forward in 2010. Some district offices, in fact, received a visit every hour, on the hour, for four days straight! This is beyond a campaign. This is America at its very core saying loud and clear we need a functioning immigration system that stops unscrupulous employers from exploiting American and immigrant workers, but encourages honest employers looking to play by the rules. Since June 1, 2009, the campaign has organized over 700,000 calls and faxes into the White House and Congress calling for reform. This is a significant a number of Americans but the decibel is nothing compared to that of an entire news channels (and multiple talk radio shows) that are primed and ready to scare Congress from endorsing an immigration solution that serves our nation. So, while our campaign is made up of over 750 faith, labor, business, progressive, African American, civil rights and immigrant organizations working to reform our immigration system in the interests of America's families, we need your help. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ali-noorani/our-time-to-fight-for-imm_b_476801.html moreVoting Question: Military Officer Branch that teaches you the MOST Leadership?

What should I major in?
I am currently in high school and as college is quickly approaching, I am considering all majors to go into. I am a bright student and let me tell you briefly about my academics: 4.7 GPA (about) "Gifted Program" (GIEP) 250+ Community service hours per year (Trying for 300+) Advanced placement courses. In the top one percent of my grade. Personality, hobbies: Tennis player, USTA 3.5 rating, hope to be 4.0 when I graduate. Like to help people. Nothing in the medicine field, I hate blood and the human body, etc. Best in my math class, took 11th grade math courses in 9th grade. Outstanding leadership skills, etc. My gifted teacher thinks I should major in Public Policy at Cornell and then get an MBA at Wharton Acadamy (School) of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and go into Corporate Real Estate Development. I'm not sure if that's what I'm into though. I'm really artsy but I don't want to be an artist (I'm not that good), like arcitecture, job MUST require traveling to different cities, etc, salary about $100k starting, nearing $150k-$200k at peak. I do not know about maybe some type of international relations manager? I also like politics, not really law but I'm really good on the mock trial team and on the HS Speech League (forensics). So does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks, and If you have any ?s, I'll try to post additional details for you all. Thank you and have a great evening! -Ethan moreResolved Question: Best officer position that teaches the most leadership (and not all desk work) after ROTC?
Which officer position does this? With a major in business I think joining the military before the workforce is a great way to develop leadership skills (and no graduate school tuition!). Would a car manufacturer who bends over for the U.A.W. be treated like Toyota? Is Toyota guilty of capitalism? Toyota is making all the necessary corrections to their vehicles, govt does not need to apply pressure, its being done voluntarily and will not be short-cutted. I'm a junior in high school and i'm thinking about joining the AF-RTOC program at either BU, NYU, syracuse, UNC, or UCONN. I want to major in Finance/Business management or maybe economis. I think the leadership experience will benefit me when it comes to looking for jobs in the civilan world but i'm not sure how much it will. Only thing is will I be able to get my master's degree and is it of equal quality if I were to go this route. I understand that most of these companies are looking for the ivy league business grads but would graduating with a business degree plus the air force background along with the other experiences it comes with give me a good shot at executive positions or other financial positions in a company or am I better off trying to get into the best business school possible and eating the tuition myself but then I would miss the air force experience that appeals to me. I'd love to run my own real estate investment business one day. My father is a contracter and one day i'd love to tag team with him to fix/build homes and sell and rent for profit. My biggest worry is i'll go to school, get my degree, maybe even get my masters degree, do my time in the air force maybe move up a rank or two, leave the air force to get a civilian job and end up working in a factory, or driving trucks, or some mediocrity job. Not that there's something wrong with that it's just I have the knowledge to do very well but the Air force really interest me but I don't want it to hinder my chances in the real world of employment later on. I don't want a 9-5 regular job. Its just not me. moreTop Business Leadership Links
