Local business briefs: Tennessee Commerce faces Nasdaq delisting

Franklin-based Tennessee Commerce Bancorp, Inc. said Friday it received a letter from Nasdaq saying it was subject to possible delisting for not filing its annual report on time. The business bank plans to request a hearing before Nasdaq that could take place within the next 45 days.

The $900-million asset bank said two weeks ago it discovered problems with internal controls over its financial reporting and had hired an auditor to look into the issues. It also put its chief financial officer on paid administrative leave but bank officials said they had no reason to believe the deficiencies would impact previously reported results.

Business pessimism continues to grow

A new survey shows that pessimism about the general business situation in New Zealand continues to grow.

Auckland Chamber of Commerce says 64% of the thousand small to medium sized businesses surveyed think the business situation will deteriorate over the next six months.

That is nearly twice as many than in December and three times more than a year ago.

The survey also found businesses expect significantly less demand from customers here, and that interest rates will rise over the next year.

However, Auckland Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Michael Barnett says rather than sitting back and saying these are tough times, there are things businesses can do to help themselves.

Barnett says businesses need to invest in people and good marketing. more

Voting Question: Why are insurance companies so good with propaganda and why do many Americans fall for it?

1. They focus obsessively on the flawed systems of two nations only (Canada and Britain), and completely ignore Japan, Israel, Australia and Switzerland. 2. They tell the people that universal health care has failed everywhere and the people believe it (then why aren't the people of Taiwan, Norway and Austria, to name a few, not out protesting for its dismantling?) 3. They tell the people all about long waitings lists, but neglect to mention how many are kept waiting while the insurance company makes the decision to go ahead or not. 4. They convince the people that universal health care is the stepping stone to communism, as if such a system will turn us into North Korea (note, Australia has universal health care and is a free country). 5. They lead the people to believe that all nations with universal health care have up to 90% taxes levied. Yes, Germany and the Scandinavian nations have very high taxes, but not every single country in Europe, and Australia's taxation is similar to ours). 6. They convince the people of the dangers of having govt. make healthcare decisions, but never realize that it's worse with health insurance executives making those decisions, because you are a potential profit of loss to them. I would rather have a nameless bureaucrat who doesn't care if I live or die than an insurance executive who prefers that I die should I become unprofitable. 7. They conveniently gloss over how the current system stifles small business growth or freelance work and leads to "job lock," thus limiting opportunities for Americans who want to work independently. 8. They've convinced millions that those without insurance are just lazy bums or reckless spendthrifts, ignoring the hard-working poor who can't find jobs with benefits or make just enough to disqualify them for state aid.How many politicians are getting their orders from the insurance companies who finance them and make sure that such propaganda is disseminated? I’ve been desperately looking for a job since December, and have been ‘interning’ as the lead of business development at a marketing firm since January. (Some background info- I’m 26, have BA, 3+ years of PA/admin experience, 1 year of marketing/PR experience.) They have offered me a package of £14k, which I basically cannot live on. I hate to walk away from an opportunity, but it’s also hard to apply for other things as well as sneak off for interviews while I’m working. Resolved Question: I don't feel bad about offending someone, but should I?

I need some repairs to my roof soffitt, and the house across the street had a sign in the yard from a company that was apparently working on their roof. It's a rental house and they're in the process of fixing it to re-rent since those obnoxious people moved out. I called the number on the sign and left a message giving my address and asking if, since they are working in the neighborhood, they would mind looking at my house and providing me with an estimate. I left my number for them to call me if they wanted to make an appointment rather than just walk over there. I never heard back from them. My personal policy is not to make a second call for such things. Companies that want the business will return the call, and I just move on to someone else after a couple of days. Well, the sign has been gone for a few days now, and last evening when I arrived home there were some people out in the yard and garage. I waved and asked, "What was your experience like with the roofer?" The guy just asked, "Why?" I replied, "I called and left them a message about getting an estimate for some work on my soffitt. I never heard back and I usually see that as them being unreliable. I was just curious." To my surprise the guy said, "Well, that's my company. I can have someone look at it." What could I say? He didn't act offended--maybe he didn't hear what I just said. Nevertheless I responded, "No thank you. Like i said, I was just curious." I waved and slipped back to my house, my opinion about not following up on leads unchanged. Should I have felt bad, though? Should I have given them the opportunity to bid for the work? Voting Question: Why do all Liberal movements die off so fast?

Throughout our history, this is sadly the case. History repeats itself. Liberal leftwing movements are like the high on a drug, followed by the low. Let me give examples 1) In Britain you had Neoclassic literature (based on reason)....then for 30 years you had idealistic Romantic literature (Liberal-like) that thrived from the poets like (William Wordsworth)...the idealism then yielded to the Victorian Age. 2) In the New England Renaissance, there was a short age of Transcendentalism...the Liberal movement of 19th century thinking, it too lost momentum rather quickly. 3) In the 1800s there were numerous socialist utopian experiments, they all were exciting and then collapsed within 10-15 year spans. 4) The Bolshevik Revolution: The Marxist utopian vision at first was spectacular until it was toppled by a new class of elite, who hijacked Marxism into Totalitarianism. 5) The French Revolution: Same great feeling among the peasantry....and then came Napoleon. 6) The 1960s and Civil Rights.....the hippie generation...acid rock........it all died with the economic challenges of the 1970s (hyperinflation) and then the exodus of wealth from downtown cities for suburban sprawl.....leading to a NEW age of segregation between city and suburban life (with the exception of Manhattan), then solved by gentrification of downtown cities.....leading to the elimination of urban cultures..... 7) The beginning of the Internet Age....this was where the masses had the ultimate opportunity to catch up with the business community....and they did.....with the dot com era!........Then the dot coms went bust......now the hype is gone.... 8) National Conference on Organized Resistance, Washington, DC campus of American University....(1997 thru 2008) This was a large set of workshops from the political left ranging from everything from anarchy to civil disobedience to artistic political expression to bio-disesel-fuel.....to feminism....to veganism....to alternatives to pills for mental illnesses......to nonviolent protests......Crowds of 5,000 people every January gathered on the campus courtyard...... until 2008 when no college student who hadn't graduated agreed to sponsor the workshop on their campus......the umbrella group discontinued itself indefinitely...... as a result........the entire production died off......and now the whole thing is gone completely...... Resolved Question: How to extend a bright 16-yo boy's horizons beyond heavy rock?

Family culture centered on "insight and wisdom" and social activism for generations, even with minimal educational opportunities and necessary distractions of business. But now very intelligent, astute, perspicacious, lucid, engaging 16yo grandson intent solely on rock guitar and becoming a sound engineer - uninterested in wider prospects of a University education beyond mere "trade skills", despite an advantaged private college education and trips overseas to Europe and Asia. Twin sister keen to "change the world". Mother (my daughter) a leading psychiatrist, outstanding horsewoman, social activist, etc. Father wasted intelligence on business etc. But my grandkids and I have always talked so well and widely - and now I think grandson's opting out of life. How can I fire my boy's engagement with 5000 years of human thought, and even longer Evolution? Disaster! Help! I'm sure the problem is common in the West nowadays, just when materialist myopia dominates globally, and humanity needs help and critical thought most desperately! more

I've been going to school for 4 and a half years and can't find any work even remotely related to my major, Music industry. I was introduced to someone about 4 months ago. This guy seemed to be into me and then his ex that he cheated on wanted to see if there was anything there so he told me that we weren't going to hang out. About 2 weeks later he came back around and said they didn't work out. So we hung out. One night at playing pool he was mad because I talked to a guy here or there. He seemed to like me. About 4 month's later we start talking finances, and he tells me he wants to add to this business he's started. He seemed to really motivate me to want to do better and to encourage him, I gave him the cash he needed to start what he needed. Now all of our talks have been strictly business. I work for a company that can provide a lot of potential business for what he does. I don't feel used necessarily, but I told him today that we did not need to be "personable" any longer. I told him we can be professional and that he did not have to pretend to like me for business purposes. I am not a stupid girl, I know where to take it from here. I just want to know how or why it would have to end this way when it didn't start this way. Is everyone more interested in money than the value of friendship or more, a relationship that could only lead to 10 times this one meager opportunity...?? Resolved Question: Mashup education, experience, and skills at 24. What should I do if establishing a school is my eventual goal?

In college I have studied business management, European politics, advertising, philosophy (four of these one year each), and performing arts communication (am in junior year, will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in communication next year). I failed my first four attempts at college not because of laziness or Iack of commitment; but because I made some ignorant choices in my personal lives that required a lot of cleanup, wrecked my relationship with my family, and compromised my mental health. In between I took a year off to take care of myself and make amends at home, got back into college, and gradually pursue the dream again. The dream has been in my heart practically all my life: I want to set up the first performing arts high school in my country that provides hard working, talented teenagers the opportunity to test the waters of professional showmanship within the safety of a responsible educational institute before they'll have to make up their minds if this is what they want to pursue in tertiary education (e.g. conservatoires or performing arts college) or for life. At some point in my life, I want this dream to actually come true, but I don't know yet where to start. I'm 24 and have been in college since 16 after accelerating two grades in high school, so my first go at university was a rushed decision. However, I always knew that I would want to own my own business one day (i.e. the school) and that I will need to know how to raise capital, sell the product (school programs), lead people, and sustain a long living organisation. Out of my five studies, the one that has the biggest impact on me was probably advertising, which helped me understand how brand development, corporate culture, corporate identity, publicity and image work as part of a company's marketing strategy. I did well in advertising but had to leave to take care of my personal issues. Initially I chose it was because I was too chicken to audition for music school (I had stopped playing music for about 3 years then, I'd probably flunk anyway), but it's creative and based on the business principles I have encountered in a previous study. My current study, PA, has been the most stable, but the program sucks. The campus is originally a PR school that happens to be attended by a number of local celebrities; so they made a communication program tailor made for students intending to pursue a career in showbiz. We ended up getting raw public relations material with odd classes like anthropology, law, and telecommunication technology, with two supplementary art classes per semester. I don't mind the academic subjects, but am alarmed at the lack of theory basis, technique drilling, and emphasis of dedicated showmanship in these classes. We don't even get to choose what kind of performing arts we intend to specialise in, we just get some singing classes and some acting classes but they're basically just throwing the baby in the bath water. So I can sing a bit, act a bit, dance a bit, write scripts, direct, and produce a production satisfactorily, but I can do none of these at a professional level. The reason why I didn't take education major was because I'm not interested in being a classroom teacher. My goal is to raise the capital to start this school, establish a particular brand of education with a distinctive corporate culture, and lead and train the decision makers to run the business responsibly. However, considering that I will need to know the principles of setting up curricula and methods of approaching students to bring out the best of them, I am willing to consider pursuing a master's degree in education. When it comes to work experience, I have had many jobs but not been able to keep them. My longest job was selling skin care products and recruiting people for an MLM company; I lasted 2 years but can't call that a career. I've dreamt about this just about every day for 6 years--that's about 25% of my life already. I want to be the first founder of a performing arts high school in my country. I actually write down details about what the school would look like, what the school's philosophy would be like, the school's corporate identity and culture, what kind of teachers will be teaching there, what kind of students will it attract, what alumni and ex students will grow to become, what facilities will be available, side enterprises it will give students and teachers the opportunity to participate in, and other businesses (the media, scholarship bodies, tertiary education institutes, theatre and dance companies, record labels, production houses, NGOs, the government...) Now, the past 6 years of my life had also been a tough one... unwise choices concerning my study (mostly due to ignorance and lack of guidance), disappointment, studies fell apart, separated from parents by the continent since my mid teens only to return home in my early twenties totally failing my plans, and nervous breakdown. However, since my decision to restart college at 22, my studies have seen success, and so have my emotional health and stability. I'm now a junior (third year) student of a bachelor's degree in Performing Arts Communication--not at a Conservatoire but at a Public Relations school. It's a new program so we get to be the guinea pigs for raw communication management classes copied from its PR and Mass Communication majors, supplemented by singing, acting, directing, and production classes. Hi, Our tax advisor is out of country. We are seeking your help and advise. IRS is examining our 2007 personal return. They asked us to send supporting documentation for Schedule C expenses we claimed: 1) Other Expenses 2) Vehicle Expenses To give you background, we were in Cleveland, Ohio and exploring for business opportunities in 2007. Initially, from Jan through May, we traveled to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus during weekends through some leads. Also we were looking for business through online websites and newspapers. In May, we had found a gas station for sale in about 20 miles from our place. We talked to the seller. Based on what he said, the business seemed promising so we wanted to purchase. He asked us to put a 10k deposit and so he can start training as we had no idea on gas station business. Also he indicated that it may take about 4 - 6 months to transfer ownership as its a name brand gas franchise. We believed his words and put a $10K deposit with a bill of sale agreement and started training and paperwork with the franchise to transfer ownership. We had gone to the franchise corporate office for interview and exams as well. The seller promised that we can get our deposit back if we back out or transfer process doesn't go through. From May through September we had training almost everyday. It seemed like business wasn't doing very well due to competition on the other corner. Before proceeding further (its already too late :-), we decided to go to a CPA and get his previous tax returns verified. We went to a local CPA, showed his tax papers, paid $75 towards consultation fee, she suggested not to buy the gas station as it had liabilities. I know this is kind of a weird question... here's the details. My wifes family owns/operates a fairly good-sized home building company ,maybe 50 homes a year. I have the opportunity to come work for them but not sure what function I want to sell my self on without looking like an a**hole. My Background: I've been working (10 years now) in a supervisory function for a large manufacturing company where I've learned to be pretty good with leading efficency improvement projects. I do not have a degree ( i dropped out after two years), but have always continued my education here and there learning things as they apply directly to business. I communicate pretty well in writing and orally and I'm descent with CAD drafting software and the MS office suite stuff as well as being farily strong in the math arena. Also, I worked in the construction trade for about three years right after high school where I learned most of the basics of being a carpenter. A guy I like forgot something in my office and is coming back to get it this afternoon. This is my opportunity! What do I say to him? The only convo we had was around Halloween, when he asked me what I was doing. I told him I was going downtown with a friend. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was going to volunteer out in the wilderness with little kids. That made me feel guilty. How can I strike up a conversation again and let him know I am interested without coming off as desperate, needy, or stupid? I volunteer at a hospital and work with children every week! But I don't want to just bring that up randomly. He's coming by to just pick up his binder and leave. I truly admire him and genuinely want to get to know him more. How can I make it feel like he is the one doing the leading and want to get to know me? I'm looking for answers that are genuine and something you would say to someone who you want to get to know more. Should I put my number in the binder? LOLIf it helps any, I'm 25 and he is my age or within a year of it. I chose science because I enjoy it and am good at it; business, because I wanted to try it since the future possibilities are very appealing to me. The issue is I don't know where I want to go after I get my bachelors. Pros of Business: -I love to travel and would like to get involved in the global market. -The life of an exec is very appealing; has the potential of making a lot of money. -Many options in the business world. -I find current political and economic events very interesting (I like to keep up with the what's going on in the world). -Can come with status and power Cons: -Has the potential of not making a lot of money; business stretches across a whole spectrum from monotonous low-paying cubical work, to exciting high-paying executive positions. -From the courses I've taken, I'm not into HR (business psychology has got to be one of the most boring branches of psych), not into accounting (do not like balancing numbers all day), and economics is so-so. -Won't feel like I'm "making a difference" for the betterment of mankind. -Recession??? Sciences/Medicine Pros: -I enjoy science (mainly biological) because I find it interesting; genetics/mbb is particularly relevant to me since I have the genetic predisposition for cancer and other heredity diseases. -MD/specialist is very respectable; I like the "Dr." title :) -Can feel I'm making a difference by helping heal people as a doctor, or as a scientist, help in preventing/curing certain genetic diseases. -Even though a business career may have a higher potential to make more, a doctor has a for-sure good pay. Cons: -As a scientist (MBB), I'm not really into doing research my entire life with only the possibility of making some scientific breakthrough. Don't want to just be a lab rat with a medium pay. -Medicine is EXPENSIVE in TIME and MONEY. I don't know if I want to go to school for 4 years, specialize for another 4, and realize I don't like what I'm doing. I hear doctors have a lot of overhead, plus taxation, etc. taking years to pay off debt and actually begin earning a solid living. -Even though my grades are good, I don't know when I'm gonna have the time or money for all the volunteer stuff for med school. Policing/Forensics Pros: -I love solving problems/puzzles and find criminology very interesting. I think I'd love investigative work (whether forensic or detective work). -Dead people/bodies don't disturb me. I've found myself able to stomach more graphic scenes than some of my peers. Perhaps it's because I can become emotionally detached. -Would feel really good to catch sons of a b***ches criminals. Whether it be wife beater, or child killer. Cons: -You first need to be a cop in order to do more advanced forensic fieldwork, and I'm physically not cop material and have no interest in handing out traffic tickets for 3 years with only the "possibility" of becoming a FIS. -Sure there's civilian forensic work, but I don't wanna be a lab rat who's told "analyze this and give me results" without knowing what's going on in an actual investigation. -Forensic pathology I find extremely interesting because it's a medical/bio-based forensic field where you "investigate" cause of death etc. However, in Canada you must be a pathologist first = med school. Personality: I'm competetive, but don't consider myself a "leader" per se (haven't had much opportunity to lead, so maybe I could be if I just came out of my shell a bit?). I really enjoy solving things. Put a lot of value in having status/respect (money helps but isn't everything). Do not like monotony! Etc. Etc. I apologize this is too long. It's just I think I'd enjoy any one of these in their own way and have no idea how to slash them. They all have pros and cons and I just wanna be able to try them all! more

Here's the details of our (my step) 21 yr old son: while in college and working part-time in a pharmacy, he tried for a short time to work for cut-co. he sold knives to randoms that are close but then came to a realization that job wasn't going to make it. previous to this experience he had a growing vision that he wanted to become a millionaire, reading many books about it and decided he wanted to lead his own life and not have to ever work 'under anyone'. he quit college because he doesn't think an education is necessary to have in life (while in school maintained great grades), quit his part-time job in a pharmacy because he considered it to be a waste of time working 'under' someone. while parents are 100% supportive and father always provides opportunities for him to do many things. no expectations for him in the house and very limited rules on him because he was trusted. he got a job working with another one of the pyramid scheme investing businesses and said this would be the job he wants to focus on (while not being in school or working elsewhere for an income). after a year of this, and a couple months ago we asked him to start paying at least his cell phone bill to wake him up to the reality of this life that he should focus on more than just this job that isn't doing anything for him, now his phone was shut off because he couldn't even pay that. his mom thinks we should be entirely supportive of him because he is our son, which is ok of course. his father thinks his son should start taking some responsibilities as once he quit school he indirectly declared he wants to become a man. the problem is, he doesn't have interest or a mind to get a part time job to atleast buy his gas and his cell phone bill. this is the only thing he wants to focus on. give our (my stepson) son more time? thoughts, suggestions? are we wrong to expect for him to start paying for things? is the mother right to say just sit back and support him without trying to push him to become more responsible? he lives with her, and poor her struggles enough to keep up with the cost of living. she is paying his rent, food, everything, and he has no thought to even pay his own gas or cell phone bill. i hate he takes advantage of this...and she doesn't seem to mind. i just hate to wake up one day and he is 26 , still without at least an education or a real job. he just hopes to become a millionaire.....your thoughts and advice? since he is not 'my' son, directly i can't say it like it is. if he were my son, i'd be sure he pursues what he wants, but stays in school and also gets a part time job to pay his bills (all of them, not just a cell phone). more

Resolved Question: Air Force military service vs. civilian business.?

I am in a tough situation that I am willing to share with everyone. I am currently at a crossroads. One road is leading towards the service, the United States Air Force. I would really love to serve my country with the branch that I admire the most. I am trying to acquire a pilot slot which I hope turns out to be in my favor. However, if I fail to get that slot, I may be doing a job that I wouldn't really enjoy doing and everyone knows how that can turn out; and it could really affect my performance. The other road leads into the business world. I am currently a business major with a 3.6 GPA. I have high interest within the business world specifically entrepreneurship and finance. My brother who currently resides in NY has high hopes for me to come move with him after college and start a collaboration. I don't have any doubts that we will make an interesting living. If I chose the Air Force, I will be giving up time that could be spent doing internships, specific work experience, and possibly revamping my entrepreneurial focus. Resolved Question: Republicans, if I was running for public office would you consider voting for me?

I am a democrat, but a moderate, not a liberal. Below are issues where i either partially or fully agree with the republicans. Gun Control: While I believe that guns should be kept out of the hands of dangerous criminals, I support the second amendment. Defend your home, go out and hunt, just be safe. I believe it is unnecessarily to tax guns and ammunition on top of the already existing state sales tax. Abortion: More pro life than pro choice. I do not believe that it should be outlawed fully, but believe that after the first few weeks, it should be outlawed due to the fact that the fetus is now conscious and feels the pain of the abortion. At this stage, it should be done only to save the life of the mother. Also, abortion should not be a free service, it should be a service you pay for, unless it is a case of rape, incest, or if the mother would die in child birth. This eliminates abortion as birth control and creates revenue for the government. Affirmative action: Harmful to true equality. Obama is wrong to support it. Military: Raise the salaries of our heroes and increase funding to troops in Afghanistan. Catching Bin Laden is a top priority. This is something I praise Obama for doing. Economy/stimulus money: Should be going specifically to education, tax cuts, pay raises for military personal, and public works projects for green energy jobs. Taxes: I will not now, nor will I ever support trickle down economics, Reaganomics etc. However, I would lower taxes on the wealthy. With trickle down, the working class cannot invest in themselves because they pick up the burden of the top five percent not paying taxes. However, if the rich are taxed at the high rate they are now, it is difficult for these companies to reinvest in new jobs. There can be a balance here. The wealthy would pay on no more than five percent of their income, and by wealthy I mean those making 150'000 plus a year. I would give tax credits to small businesses who offer health benefits to employees, and per employee hired. A low tax rate, combined with cutting wasteful spending will fund the stimulus money and may lead to a budget surplus. Immigration: If they get a visa, work for equal wages in the competitive market, they are welcome in my book. This is the land of opportunity. But, if they hop the fence and take American jobs for half pay, immediate deportation. No amnesty, and increase border patrol funding. An immigrant should not be eligible for workers compensation if they are not legal residents. I consider myself a moderate, blue dog democrat. A JFK democrat and Teddy Roosevelt progressive. I voted for Obama and generally approve of him, but do think there are some things he has done wrong. I can't see myself voting against him in 2012. Again, I am a democrat, just not a liberal. I believe the liberal arts honors program will help me become a well-rounded person. It will help me become more analytical and thoughtful. I will not only ask why, but how, what where and when. I will look deeper on many tasks come upon in the profession I want to pursue Accounting I will be able to solve problems that my constituents will have missed because they merely scratched the surface. My communication skills will broaden and I will able to talk to customers not only on a professional level, but personal level as well. I will be able to make my business. The study abroad opportunities that the liberal arts program will offer will help me become open minded and knowledgeable on different cultures. I will able to empathize with people from different backgrounds and aid them in ways other cannot. The program will also help me enhance my leadership skills. I will be able to make ideas become reality by persuading and leading people for the necessary changes I want to accomplish. I will not become a wallflower in my career; I will be head front and center leading the way to change. I'm 23 and I dated a girl for three years who I had been best friends with for 5 years before that. I was always happy when I was with her, she just had this magical calming effect on me and I thought I would marry her. She is very pretty but not necessarily a head-turner, and her energy level is a lot lower than mine, but she knows me and understands me better than anyone else on the planet. I am also extremely sociable and extroverted, and she is pretty quiet and shy. I am on a career trajectory that I feel will lead to very big things and I am certain that in a few years I will be in a position where women will literally be throwing themselves at me. I still have very strong feelings for my ex and I really miss her and our relationship, but at the same time I've been so busy with work and difficult circumstances that I haven't really had a lot of new girls, so I don't know how much of that is genuine and how much is just loneliness... I know that I can trust my ex more than anyone else on the planet outside my immediate family, and I worry a lot that when I do achieve my career goals women will be attracted to my money and status more than anything else and with the divorce rate so high I am afraid I may end up with someone who loves money more than they love me. Also business is rapidly teaching me that a lot of people out there can't be trusted and don't have integrity, and my ex is the most goodhearted person I know. I don't want to hurt her again (and it would be so much worse after all that time!). Right now I'm miserable either way, any thought?!?!*Wanted to add that I love and respect her tremendously and absolutely do view her as my equal, just different...I am very driven and ambitious and want to "make my mark on the world" in a very big way, and she would be content having a quieter, more traditional family life. I would be happy having that life with her too, but it would mean letting go of some of my other grand aspirations, and I also don't know if I would be content not having utilized my full potential in terms of my business. Also because she is far more introverted, I don't know if she would fit well into the fast-paced and highly social lifestyle that I want, but at the same time I don't know if I will want that lifestyle when I am older! Part of me also says that success will be far sweeter if there's someone by my side the entire journey to appreciate it with me and she would keep me grounded. 2/3 of my friends always thought we would get married, 1/3 of my friends (most best friends) thought I could do better. more

Barack Obama Furious at General Stanley McChrystal Speech on Afghanistan The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war. By Alex Spillius in Washington Published: 7:00AM BST 05 Oct 2009 Photo: AFP/GETTY US General Stanley McChrystal According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week. The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bid. Asked if the president had told the general to tone down his remarks, he told CBS: "I wasn't there so I can't answer that question. But it was an opportunity for them to get to know each other a little bit better. I am sure they exchanged direct views." An adviser to the administration said: "People aren't sure whether McChrystal is being naïve or an upstart. To my mind he doesn't seem ready for this Washington hard-ball and is just speaking his mind too plainly." In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda. He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan". When asked whether he would support it, he said: "The short answer is: No." He went on to say: "Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support." The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House. Gen McChrystal delivered a report on Afghanistan requested by the president on Aug 31, but Mr Obama held only his second "principals meeting" on the issue last week. He will hold at least one more this week, but a decision on how far to follow Gen McChrystal's recommendation to send 40,000 more US troops will not be made for several weeks. A military expert said: "They still have working relationship but all in all it's not great for now." Some commentators regarded the general's London comments as verging on insubordination. Bruce Ackerman, an expert on constitutional law at Yale University, said in the Washington Post: "As commanding general, McChrystal has no business making such public pronouncements." He added that it was highly unusual for a senior military officer to "pressure the president in public to adopt his strategy". Relations between the general and the White House began to sour when his report, which painted a grim picture of the allied mission in Afghanistan, was leaked. White House aides have since briefed against the general's recommendations. The general has responded with a series of candid interviews as well as the speech. He told Newsweek he was firmly against half measures in Afghanistan: "You can't hope to contain the fire by letting just half the building burn." As a divide opened up between the military and the White House, senior military figures began criticising the White House for failing to tackle the issue more quickly. They made no secret of their view that without the vast ground force recommended by Gen McChrystal, the Afghan mission could end in failure and a return to power of the Taliban. "They want to make sure people know what they asked for if things go wrong," said Lawrence Korb, a former assistant secretary of defence.
