Finding Health Insurance if You Are Self-Employed

If there is one thing that separates the self-employed from those employed by others, it is their preoccupation with health insurance.

I was reminded of this on Feb. 14, when I wrote a post on the Shifting Careers blog asking small-business owners and would-be entrepreneurs what they were doing about health insurance. Within hours, scores of people posted comments about their own experiences and, if they had managed to find good resources, shared those. I have been reading e-mail messages and trying to make sense of the subject ever since. In short, it is not pretty out there.

Business Lead Club Questions asked

Voting Question: R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 6)?

The never-ending battle continues. Today we have a new guest contributor. You may know him as David, you may know him as paperbag, but he's bee a regular here for quite a while (longer than I), and he was nice enough to write up some match-ups while I deal with cross-country flights. The First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition) continues. MARQUEE MATCHUP "Last of the English Roses" - Peter Doherty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjIO-AJlFoU The lead single from the celebrated and controversial indie icon's debut solo album. Produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths), this atmospheric, elegant song features Blur's Graham Coxon on guitar. Picture a lost love from your past as you listen. VS. "Moving Clocks Run Slow" - We Were Promised Jetpacks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nw7mThmd6E Hailed by critics for their "youthful brio and subtlety" (Mojo) and "dreamy and impressionistic" lyrics (The A.V. Club), this Scottish band cites The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbits as influences. Listen to this song from their debut album and see if you feel the praise is deserved. MATCH UP 2: "Antenna" - Sonic Youth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B_NVayA_VI A song from The Eternal, Sonic Youth's sixteenth album. Always pushing the musical envelope, and therefore always polarizing, the band describe this song as a "melodious ode to fleeting fantasy and unresolved desire with the sound of two analogue radios communicating the emotional action." Are you on their unique wavelength or eager to tune out? VS. "The Fixer" - Pearl Jam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_d6Km3QJFc A lighter-than-usual single from the Seattle icons. Are they... having a good time?! It's certainly no "World Wide Suicide." A few critics have blasted PJ for this bouncier, more pop-oriented sound, damning it as forced and ill-fitting. Do you concur or are you too busy nodding your head and singing along with poppier Vedder? MATCH UP 3: "My Wife's Home Town" - Bob Dylan http://www.lala.com/#search/bob%20dylan%20my%20wife%27s%20home%20town The legendary singer/songwriter is pushing 70 and still kicking. It's been said his voice (always an acquired taste) is shot and he should retire; others insist he's as brilliant and relevant as ever. Listen to this cut from Together Through Life and decide for yourself. (editor's note: no youtube link, sorry guys). VS. "Wretched World" - Converge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YojThNUSpkw If elderly Dylan isn't to your taste, perhaps a metalcore band from Salem, Massachusetts will be. This song features contributions from Genghis Tron and is included on their most recent album, Axe to Fall. MATCH UP 4: "New Divide" - Linkin Park http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysSxxIqKNN0 A song by one of the decade's most successful American bands for 2009's most popular (and most plot-free) film--this is without a doubt music as big business. Empty bombast? Or a rousing anthem? You decide. And decide quick, before Michael Bay and Megatron blow Yahoo! Answers to smithereens! VS. "Savior" - Rise Against http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qhry7ufxno Vocalist Tim McIlrath and his band of melodious hardcore men hail from Chicago. This is one of their most successful singles to date. Oh, the angst! The sorrow! Do you feel their pain? Or will you vote against Rise Against? MATCH UP 5: "Baby By Me" - 50 Cent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpxpHQ9ggUE G-Unit! The movie! The video games! You would be forgiven if you had forgotten 50 Cent's career as a recording artist. Sales for Before I Self Destruct, his fourth album, were disappointing. Listen to this song, which features Ne-Yo, and decide if people are missing out by missing Curtis' newer music. VS. "Love Me" - Justin Bieber http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzaMvIWCQQw Get perfect hair or die tryin'. See the 15-year-old lothario steal from The Cardigans and woo tween girls from coast to coast! Does this simple, sweet pop song leave you smiling or does Justin have your stomach turning? You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year. As always, I ask that you listen to all of the songs... don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups. Star it, and try to get as many voters to this thing as you can. So, THE QUESTION: which songs are the better of each these match ups (even if it's only the lesser of two evils in your eyes)?if you listened to this one Justin Bieber song -- feel free to ignore my "listen to every song" rule for future Justin Bieber songs (oh, and there are like 5 more of those things on the list.... thanks, tweens). more

Voting Question: SUING AN ATTORNEY (MY OWN) FOR INCOMPETENT REPRESENTATION?

Five years ago I was forced to defend one of my patents against a charge of infringement. I engaged a prestigious Pittsburgh law firm. They promised to provide competent representation led by a litigator who was reputed to be super. Considerably into the case, the super litigator, whom I spent considerable time educating about the technicalities of the case, was suddenly pulled off the case by this law firm and I was given a litigator who turned out to be considerably inferior in skills. I was given no warning and no choice in the matter. I am a layman where matters of law are concerned, but, during the conduct of the case, I was getting the feeling that my attorneys were incompetent, losing advantage at almost every turn and showing that they were not knowledgeable. I knew that we did not infringe. Further, my attorneys were telling me that we should prevail in this lawsuit. Therefore, I pressed on. It went on for 2 years. The whole thing was debilitating to me, my family and my business. In additional to the physical and emotional costs, I could not afford for this to continue financially. At one point, I thought I may have to remortgage my home. The case reached the Summary Judgment level. We lost. That is, we did not win, and, in my estimation, we should have. The Judge said that my attorneys had failed to prove that our product did not infringe. He cited several examples of case law, leaving me to wonder why my own attorneys were not aware of those cases. Further, I believe, we should have won this case at an early stage. My attorneys simply did an inadequate job of telling our story. We had filed a separate Invalidity Motion. My attorneys told me that they thought we had an 80% chance of winning on Invalidity. At Summary Judgment, the Judge said that he would not even rule on our Invalidity Motion because (he said) my lawyers did not educate him properly. By that time, I had neither the will nor the finances to continue the case. I was forced to settle, and not on a very pretty (or just) basis. The fees I had paid my attorneys came to nearly $450,000...unbelievable. Very small companies, like mine, could have survived such a hit...and then my attorneys said that I owed them another $98,000. That was rubbing salt into the wound. In view of (what seemed obvious to me to be) their incompetent performance, I refused to pay their additional billing. As a result they are now suing me to force me to pay the $98,000. I am offended that they would even ask for it...Therefore, I have filed a Countersuit asking for repayment of teh $450,000 that I already paid them and which they never truly earned. I have engaged another law firm to defend me and to pursue our Countersuit. So far, I am happy with these guys. It is well known that it is difficult to find competent attorneys who are willing to sue other attorneys for incompetence. Bucking the establishment...taking on the "Old boys club" requires an attorney who is something of a maverick. I am a businessman who has worked 65+ hours per week all of my life. I did so for the benefit of myself and my family and also to make sure that the good people employed by my company continue to have jobs. Check us out at www.extech-voegele.com. It turns out that I am a good guy who is a victim within the justice system that is supposed to help the good guys. I guess an old attorney was right when he said to me, "You will get all the justice that you can afford". I am not litigious. I was willing to let my ex-attorneys keep the $450,000 and simply call it the worst experience of my life. But, after the incompetent job that they did, I am refusing to pay them even more and I am also asking for my money back. The cards are stacked against me. I am fighting the guys who make the rules. Is it even possible for me to find justice here? I don't know, but I must keep trying. I told this story (thanks for listening) in the hope of finding a sympathetic and knowledgeable ear. If you have had experience in a case involving Legal Malpractice or Breach of Contract (which is what I think we have here), I will appreciate your comments. Please pass this along to anyone else you may know who might be able to offer advice. I will deeply appreciate it. Resolved Question: What do you think [plot]?

It will be about Layla Dixon. She will be my main character and she will be a bitch. She will be selfish, stubborn, vain and just generally a b*tch. She's only got a best friend Lexi and when Lexi tries to tell Layla what she's been like Layla just blames her parents for her up bringing that way. She lives just outside London with a dad who doesn't really have any time for her, he's always busy with his failing business and a mother that is as bad as Layla. She just cares about herself. One day though, something amazing happens. Layla's dad wins the lottery. Layla is rich and oh so undeserving. The family move into London and Layla and Lexi get an apartment. Now she's got a lot of money she parties a lot and sort of falls into a rock star lifestyle. She starts going out with the lead singer of a semi-famous rock band. He is basically a low life, he does drugs and the band are more known because of what they get up to than their music (think Pete Doherty). His name is Slater Reid. His influence makes Layla even worse. Lexi soon moves out of the apartment and back home. Now, there will be an American band in the UK celebrating their recent UK success. They are fairly clean cut and nothing like Slater's band. They will be in a club celebrating, Slater, Layla and their group of friends will be there. Layla is high as a kite on drugs and passes out in a corner of the club. A band member from the American band sees her and takes her out side. He isn't the lead but sings back up and plays guitar. His name is Blake Hutton. Blake takes her to the hospital. He stays for an hour, thinking someone will come but no one does. Not even Slater. He goes but leaves his number on her side table. In the morning she is let go from the hospital and phones Blake. They meet up so she can thank him properly for taking care of her. He is infuriated that she was left in that state. Layla though, has become used to being left places etc. They talk and she explains that her parents have been on a world trip but are staying in Paris for a while. Deep down she is very lonely and he can see this but she is also a cow which makes him even madder. Then what's going to happen is she will start to like Blake but he will really think she is a spoilt waste of space. She tries to prove that she's not by getting a job in a cafe. He sees a softer side and starts to like her. One night though Slater jumps on Blake and they end up in a fight - it's over Layla so the papers say. Slater though tells Blake that it wasn't, it were for the press. He's not in love with Layla, in face he doesn't know why he's with her and he says Blake is more than welcome to have her but says that she's rotten beyond repair. That is all i have thought of so far. What do you think so far? Would you read it? If not why? Lastly, how old are you? Cheers. more

Resolved Question: How do i help my friend keep his dream alive?

ok im 21yo, and that seems a little old for this section. but hear me out because this question is relevant to our age. i have a friend, he was in the army with me for 2 years(compulsory here) and we used to be full of energy. whenever we booked out of camp(once a week) we would do the usual things guys do, hit the clubs, get a few chicks back etc. sex drive was up there, we were feeling alive. we also discussed about how we would want to travel the world, earn alot of money, get famous, invent stuff and u know, DREAMS. after our army term ended, we went to taiwan for about a month, so same shyt, sex, booze, dreams, sightseeing, trying the food, experience the culture, whatever we could think off, we would do it, we were sociable, curious, and basically had lots of fun because it was 2 years in the army after all. after taiwan, he went to china as he wanted to work there, it was something like a dream of his to work in a foreign country, china or USA or UK or whatever, he wanted to feel like everything was an adventure. i had to return to singapore as i had a court case here but was planning to join him in china eventually. i never went there, because over in china, "reality" struck and he realised that not every action leads to a pot of gold, he eventually became depressed and asked me to remain here. now he and i are both back in our country and we're a broke but that's fine coz we always were sorta broke. problem is, after china, he never seemed the same again, his energy is down, his goals are dying but more importantly, i feel that his outlook to life is getting dimmer which doesnt have to be the case. even sex drive is dying! we both just started working for his mom now in the financial advisory business, it hasnt started yet but i can sense that the job, the whole idea, is against the fabric of his personality. i have always been more of the pragmatist so i dont really feel that bad, although the tie and suit gets on my nerves at times. my contention is that if he can just get more positive again, and we strive hard to earn more money back here, we could then do all that **** we wanted to do. but question: How do i help my friend keep his dream alive? more

Resolved Question: Why is our government vandalizing the USA?

I mean, for the past 16 years? Obama is only continuing the tradition of his predecessors: Arthur Levitt, Jr. was the longest serving head of the SEC. Do a Google search on him, see what pops up. He was appointed by Clinton in 1993 and again in 1998. He left in 2001, so he covered the entire Clinton administration. Levitt gave Madoff a free pass because they were both members of the Harmonie Club, a social club for the ultra wealthy in NYC. Madoff was first reported to the SEC in 1992: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/… Report: Regulator was tipped off about Madoff fraud as early as 1992 "a suspicion of trouble at Madoff Investment Securities arose as early as 1992 when customers of Avellino & Bienes, a fund that invested all its money with Madoff, complained about documents making a seemingly impossible promise of "100%" safe investments. Although the SEC shut down Avellino & Bienes, the agency only made a "brief and very limited" examination of Madoff." Avellino & Bienes was shut down by the SEC in 1993, the year Levitt took charge. Levitt also gave a special exemption to Enron, exempting it from accounting rules. This special exemption led directly to the Enron scam and the subsequent meltdown of the company, which took down a major chunk of the economy with it. It also led to the discovery of similar fraud at many other companies, fraud that got its start in the Clinton years. If I was going to pick one individual who was most responsible for the rampant fraud of the Clinton years, it would have to be Art Levitt. And for all those Reagan bashers, remember Clinton had 8 years to fix whatever Reagan did. So if you're going to bash Reagan, I'll blame that on Clinton.DAH, so are you saying our problem is, the majority of voters are vandals themselves? Is that why they keep voting for the ones who are doing the vandalism? more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting in to UCSB, UCLA, or USC?

I am currently applying to different colleges, and I'm getting a little worried about getting rejected to some of my preferred colleges I wanted to attend. I've been an honors/AP student since my freshman year, and my grades are pretty clean: straight A's. My current GPA is 4.5 and ranked #1 in my class. I'm in ELC. I've been in tennis for 3 years, varsity level, in different clubs such as Key Club, College Club, HERO, an Investment Club, and in CSF. To throw it out there, I'm also a patron for my school's theatre production. I'm really big on church activities, so I devote most of my time in my church choir, missionary work, and in leading different organizations that generally oversee little children/youth of the church. I've been a volunteer for our local hospital for three years, so I've done a ton of volunteering overall. I've received awards based on academics and athletics, but I'm not sure if they're too prestigious. My SATs however might kill my chances of getting in. My SAT I score is a 1740, I guess I should have AT LEAST studied. My SAT II's are not looking good either: Biology-600, Math II-580, U.S. History-590. I'm planning to take SAT I over again, and at least shooting for 2000 (with studying!). But it's too late for me to take my SAT II's over. But I know USC doesn't require Subject Tests, so that's probably okay. I'm STILL looking at my personal statements over and over and over again. I'm pretty sure that's where everything really goes down. I've always ALWAYS wanted to major in Accounting/Business Economics. And, after a lot of research, I'm pretty sure these three schools are great to attend to ... knowing that I want to stay in Cali. So do I have any chances? I need some feedback. Please and thank you! =)actually, I AM Filipino and hoping to be valedictorian for my school. more

Resolved Question: Is this essay good? It's a huge part of my grade!?

Evaluate the effectiveness of the Progressive Era reformers and federal gov. in bringing about reform at the national level. Be sure to analzye successes and limitation in the period of 1900-1920. The Progressive Era was a time of huge advances and reform by the federal government and reformers that led the way to where America is today. The battle for women’s rights had been going on for many years but seriously picked up wind during this time period and finally reached some long sought after goals. With industry booming, labor conditions were in desperate need of change and caught the eye of both reformers and the federal government. Even though much time had passed since the Civil War, race relations were still strained and many African-Americans joined the crusade for equal rights and made it a major issue of the time. During the Progressive Era, reformers made many advances in women’s rights, labor conditions, race relations, and big business and trusts but faced challenging limitations on the way to their goals, and therefore turned to the federal government, who although effective in many reforms also failed in certain areas. From the time period of 1900-1920, woman’s rights gained popularity with women, who fought and had some success but were only truly successful in their struggle due to the federal government’s efforts. At this time, there were countless women’s organization in existence that embraced the reform movement and led efforts for change. The National Council of Jewish Women, the National Congress of Mothers, and the Women’s Trade Union League are just a few among many. In fact, there were over one million members in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1912. With these numbers, women could have joined together and gotten the right to vote, however they faced many challenges. Perhaps the largest disadvantage they met was disunity. Until the National American Women Suffrage Association was formed, there was no single group devoted to getting voting rights for women. Different groups had different methods and reasons that sometimes contradicted each other. Also, in many cases, African American women were excluded from these groups and therefore forced to create their own, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Women. Some other issues they faced included male opposition, debate on whether they should make their cause a national or state one, and catholic church opposition as well as opposition from alcohol interests. Despite all of these limitations, women managed to join together and convince the federal government to make a change. In 1918, the 19th Amendment was passed which gave women the right to vote. Although many in the government system were against this, it was still passed and a major victory for many progressives. This great success for the women’s cause was brought about by reformers’ perseverance and hard work, but ultimately was accomplished by the federal government, as the reformers could only do so much themselves. The labor reform movement involved a great many successes on the part of the federal government but faced a few difficulties along the way, while reformers also contributed a bit but not to the same extent. The workplace conditions and unregulated hours left much to be desired. Muckrakers, who exposed corruption and other bad things, and books like The Jungle by Upton Sinclair brought the awful conditions to the American public and even the president’s attention. Reformers like Alice Hamilton fought to get laws passed to help laborers. By the 1930s, Hamilton had gotten all major industrial states to pass laws that compensated workers when they received diseases from fumes on the job. Reformers, however, faced limitations in what they could do. Their power lied mainly on the state level. The majority of labor reforms, therefore, were contributed by the federal government. President Woodrow Wilson was responsible for most of these reforms. He defended unions and strikes with the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and passed the Keating-Owen Act which prohibited the shipment of products created by children under 14. In a mining dispute, Wilson sided with labor and tried to convince the company to give in to the demands. When they refused, he passed the Adamson Act, giving all railroad workers an 8 hour work day. In addition, he passed the Workmen’s Compensation Act and supported an 8 hour work day for all workers. In spite of all the positive changes the federal government managed to make, they faced obstacles just as reformers did. While the executive branch of the federal government was making positive changes, in some cases the Supreme Court undermined these changes. Take, for instance, the court decision of Hammer vs. Dagenhart, which overruled the Keating-Owen Act and also Bailey vs. Drexel Furniture Company which ruled against the Second Child Labor Act. Resolved Question: Obesity Causes? Social Stigma?

Obesity: Social Prejudices and the Medical Community’s Disregard It’s a meaner world out there folks. Everywhere you turn there are people who choose to be hateful in deed and word for just about any reason you can think of. There is the obvious and not so subtle racism, class prejudice, ageism, and political polarization, just to name a few. That’s not to say that there are not exceptions to every rule but so many people have adopted political correctness to such a degree that humans have found much more subtle ways of showing their hatreds. Some of these behaviors have gone underground only to emerge in our institutions, businesses and social strata. Sure it’s always been there but now it appears that its effects are more noticeable and very, effectively dehumanizing to those on the receiving end of the many prejudices and bigotry being voiced concerning those of us who are not a size 5. Obese, heavy, overweight people are REALLY catching hell. People assume that when they see an overweight or obese person that they must be lazy, unproductive; lacking the will to take better care of them selves. I am sure that a small percentage of people in the USA fit that bill, however, you may be surprised that most of them do not. There are many reasons for obesity. The bottom line though is that people who are obese or become obese have bodies that literally no longer work the way they are supposed to. Here are a few medical and non-medical reasons people become obese: Processed Foods: White-flour-based anything, sugar, coffee, booze and high sodium content (all of which usually make up processed food) is the enemy of the human body. It doesn’t know what to do with it but glean what little nutrients it can, store the majority and dump the rest. Hypothyroidism: Since the thyroid controls the basic workings of the human metabolism, if it is too low, then it cannot convert many food calories into a usable source and that inability will cause weight gain despite healthy eating practices. When the thyroid goes wacko on the low end you WILL get fat. If it goes wacko on the high end, you can lose weight exponentially and have as many medical problems as an obese person. Cushing’s Disease/Syndrome (Cushing’s disease has always been considered a dog or horse problem, hmmm go figure): This disease is “reportedly” prevalent in only 10% of each million people if you want to believe what the CDC, FDA and AMA bother to report. Cushing’s occurs because the body producing too much Cortisol. Cortisol controls regulation of blood pressure and the immune system, and keeps insulin levels in the body stable. In Cushing’s Disease, it is assumed that only a tumor on the pituitary gland is responsible for the production of excess Cortisol. However, a few other doctors disagree and have found that Cushing’s Syndrome can also be caused by food dependency and steroid- based products such as Prednisone; especially if they have been taken for long periods of time. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: is a hormonal disorder in women. Most women would not know to ask their doctors to have them tested for this disease because the medical community considers it rare. I dare say it may be the norm today with the amount of hormones coming through our food products for many years. Oral Contraceptives: Progestins and other steroid based drugs for cancer often throw the thyroid out of balance and injure the Hypothalamus, which usually results in weight gain. Anti-Psychotic and Anti-Depressants: Taken even a short time, depending on the health of the thyroid or hypothalamus, will cause either weight gain or weight loss. The majority is weight gain especially in those taking these drugs for many years. I am doing research now as to how many people taking these drugs have had their thyroid effected, treated ,or removed. Insulin and Insulin-Stimulating Drugs: These drugs are used to treat diabetes almost always leads to weight gain. Talking about a conflict of interest when it comes to a person already overweight from diabetes and deeply disturbing for those with type 2 diabetes [ Reviewed By: Harvey Simon, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School; ] Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, the diet industry, and exercise businesses have a vested interest in keeping as many people obese as possible. In some instances Medicare will pay for these surgeries before they pay for the many tests available to diagnose any one of the above stated problems. Instead, millions are spent on denigrating people who find themselves obese and have no clue why. Voting Question: Is this guy at work a jerk? Is he wrong to do this?

He targets young girls which are clearly under 21 in clubs and is friendly, pretends he is a business man and has lots of money. He earns their trust and buys drinks he says are non alcoholic but aren't. When he gets them where he wants them, and gets info out of them, he makes the moves on them. When they resist, he follows them, bullies and intimidates them, blackmails them saying they led him on. Does whatever he can. If they resist sex, he does not rape them, but gets their phone number and address off them, goes around and demands they go for long drives with them. Sometimes he is away for hours, and the family is worried. At work he makes out like he is a stud, saying this girl was after him and says all these bad disgusting things about her. He even says he has sex with them when he does not always. He is a real jerk and real pushy. He is a bully and does things for others so they feel he must repay them. What can I do about him? more

Voting Question: how to write a Summary?

Please help me to understand this article by giving me a summary...thank you Stay or Grow? Mixed-up projects: develop, sell or mothball in today’s environment? By Brianne Binelli Just three years ago, it was almost unheard of to see a new, five-star hotel erected in Canada without complementary components like residential, office or retail space thrown in the mix. At the time, the barriers to entry where punitively high to build a downtown luxury hotel, but by pre-selling residences and leasing office and retail space, a developer could drive more revenue back into the property and create synergies that made it function better as a whole. When each part of a mixed-use property complements the others, RevPAR goes up, as does the value of the residences, office and retail space. What developer doesn’t want that? But in today’s risk-laden market, the recession has changed the way developers and lenders are approaching newly built, mammoth mixed-use hotel projects. Many are learning toward building smaller stand-alone hotel projects in secondary markets, at least until the economy recalibrates itself. “We like the diversity of doing smaller deals, having the regional diversity, the brand diversity, and the borrow diversity,” says an executive from a prominent lender into hotel real estate. That’s all well and good, unless you’re already got a huge hole in the ground for your project, have been selling residences for two years, and now have to come up with the money to see it through at a time when the availability of capital is as low as it’s been in decades. But while the economy is certainly ailing, it’s not time to run for the hills just yet, even if you are building a large mixed-use hotel. While combining residential, office or retail space into your hotel can cause legal hiccups and lead to higher costs associated with longer construction time, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to sit back and wait until the economic slump passes. Ron Taylor, senior vice-president and director of Arcturus Realty Corporation, admits the current economic climate will lead to many financial road-blocks, but he’s adamant it’s more important than ever to be cautiously optimistic and push ahead on projects if possible. “I wouldn’t ever be just sitting around,” says Taylor from his office in Victoria. “I’m busy right now trying to influence government and the financial sector,” he adds, while explaining the importance of stimulating the economy. “[We must] find innovative ways of doing [business]; look at best practices from Europe and the U.S.” Speaking of the U.S., Canada isn’t experiencing a sub-prime mortgage crisis like our southern neighbours, but we are battling rising unemployment rates, and while gaining financing for large hotel project may seem more difficult than ever, it’s not a lost cause. In fact, one of Taylor’s clients was recently successful in securing financial backing. It’s the entity processing and managing the loan, which is backlogged. Getting in the door may be hard, but Carol Pennycook – a Toronto-based partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, who specializes in the financial sector – suspects there could also be some challenges negotiating loans. Financial institutions could be asking for a host of new requirements before doling out large sums to developers. A lender, for example, may require that a higher percentage of condominium units in a mixed-use condo/hotel property be sold before financing is made available. Even with the best of intentions, it’s no secret that some mixed-use developments may be in the hole – literally and figuratively. “Depending on the state of construction, in some cases projects have stopped and the gates have been locked,” explains Taylor. “[Sometimes] the happiest developer is the one who hasn’t actually started to do hard construction.” Of course, some provinces are faring better than others. “Downtown Toronto is a work/love/play community, so it’s a desirable area for people to go when, financially things get tight,” explains Taylor. That’s one reason why Toronto is home to numerous mixed-use hotel developments that are currently under construction, including a new Four Season flagship property. The hotel/residence, which is expected to be finished in 2012, will be comprised of two owners – one with 259 hotel rooms and 101 private residences, the second with 103 private residences. The hotel will also include a restaurant, bar, ballroom, meeting space, spa, and health club. Luckily for the project’s developers, 75 per cent if the private residences have already been sold, with the down payments made on those units used to offset some of the construction cost. “We were fortunate to have started sales and sold the majority of the private residences before the economic downturn began,” says Erika Hansen, development manager of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in Toronto. But that doesn’t mean things are easy for the Four Seaso more

Voting Question: Caught Up In Bundles Of Green.... read??? and critique?

Chapter 1: “I Know What I Must Do” The music was pounding in Joseph’s ears as he strode into the night club with his girlfriend on his right and his best friend on his left. The music was the typical Caribbean atmosphere flow and the livelihood of the club was upbeat and alive tonight! “Where do you want to go first Lacey?” Joseph turned to Lacey, and then looked across the night club. Lacey was a local on the island born and raised. She had short brown layered hair that always seemed to want to fall in one eye all the time, and she always wore a small black bow on the right side of her head. She had a very dark but milky complexion about her, and though Joseph was 6 foot 3, she only stood at 5 foot 6. Joseph had fallen in love with her two years ago and they had been dating ever since then. She knew he didn’t just love her for her looks, but for her heart. Lacey had a very giving, warm, and open heart. Her personality like a beam of warmth that shone on anyone she was with. “Hum, let’s chill at the bar first okay?” Lacey pointed to two open sits over by the V.I.P. section of the room and Joseph held his arm out to her. He turned to his best friend and said,” Looks like you’re going scoping. Good luck man.” Joseph chuckled and headed over to the bar with his girlfriend on his arm, leaving his friend heading off into the chaotic and hormone-struck dance floor. Joseph was a very dark skinned 16 year old boy who had lived on St.Croix since he was one. He has his hair always done in corn rolls, and most people in the school would agree he has a decent sense of fashion about him. Joseph’s charisma radiated off of him anywhere he went and no one would deny it. He was a straight A student, but had a very daring and adventurous attitude towards anything he did. That was why most girls fell for him. They fell for that, and his very young, pure voice. But overall, Joseph was a pretty normal islander boy just living his life to the best he could; and loving every moment too. “I would like two virgin pina calada’s please,” Joseph told the bartender. He turned to Lacey and smiled. “You know you are so beautiful and I think I am the luckiest guy here… No, I am the luckiest guy in the world to have such an amazing girl with me!” “Oh knock it off J. You’re just saying that.” Lacey flipped her bangs out of her eyes and gleamed at him. “You know I love you more than anything in the world Lacey.” Joseph leaned in and gently kissed her on the lips. Just then, a heavy hand lay on Josephs shoulder and pulled him back. “Hey Man!” Joseph started to say, but as he turned to face the person that belonged to the hand he met dark brown eyes that looked like they weren’t playing around. “What do you want man,” Joseph said with a very noticeable step back in his voice. Joseph could tell that the boy who he was facing knew he was scared now and wished he hadn’t of been as rude. “You know what I want J. Where’s the rest of the money?” The big brute was the same size as “J” but was much more built. J lowered his voice and leaned in toward the brute’s ear. “Hey, can we please not do this here? I got my girl with me and we are in a dance club filled with people.” The brute began to laugh and said through blusters of chuckles, “Yea, right! You aren’t ripping me off!” Then his voice got scruffy and dead serious as he said, “The boys are in the crowd. Don’t make me bring them over here. That is the last thing you want isn’t it J?” J looked out into the crowd with searching eyes and started noticing familiar dark faces. A very high and keen sense of fear flushed over J at that moment and he felt all the blood wash from his face. “Okay. Let’s take this outside man. I don’t want no one seeing us or getting suspicious. I mean even you would let me have at least that right?” J’s mind started working now. He was going to try to be sly, and compromise; try to get off clean. “Fine,” started the brute,” We will go outside.” J started to get out of his chair but the brute stopped him quick. “But, if you try anything like running, don’t forget we have you’re girlfriend in here.” His heavy hand slyly pointed to a darker corner nearby and J could just barely see a lean figure standing there; waiting. “Okay. I get it. I’ll be fair.” With that the brute let down his hand from J and led him from the bar to the exit doors. Lacey tried following but J told her to wait and he had the worst feeling in his stomach when he saw the look of pain and worry on his girlfriends’ face.It seemed as though the further he walked from her the more his heart hurt because he knew what was going to happen when he got outside. He didn’t have the money to pay off his debts and had no way to repay them. J knew what was going to happen; he wasn’t stupid and these guys meant business. That’s when he started noticing that as he walked out with the big brute, others were withdrawing from the dance floor. The other dark familiar faces… followed. Resolved Question: Do you think 0bama (SWT) and his cohorts are beginning to get the idea that we don't like what they are doing?

Something Really Scary for Obama's Democrats By Wesley Pruden This is one Mr. Deeds who apparently isn't going to town. The collapse of the Democratic campaign for governor of Virginia speaks volumes - chapters, anyway - about what the body politic is trying to tell Barack Obama's Democrats. They're learning, painfully, that campaigning without George W. Bush is baffling, frustrating and scary. Worse, it offers a preview of what the congressional campaigning will be like next year. One Obama doorbell ringer, working neighborhoods in Northern Virginia for Creigh Deeds, says even the promise of free pizza can't lure faithful Democrats to a rally. For weeks, The Washington Post, the house organ of the national Democratic Party, pounded away at Bob McDonnell, the Republican nominee, for having written politically incorrect term papers in graduate school, citing his master's thesis, which decried abortion, gender-bending and radical feminism, as proof that he doesn't like women very much. Only a month ago, Mr. Deeds, the Post's horse in the race, wouldn't talk about anything but the McDonnell graduate-school thesis - maybe a boon to master's and doctoral candidates who can't get anybody but a professor to read their wit and wisdom, but, as it turns out, a bore to voters in Virginia. The public-opinion polls continue to show Mr. McDonnell ahead, despite all the Post's ineffective deeds, and with a lengthening lead. Now Mr. Deeds doesn't want to talk about graduate-school scribbling at all, just as leaks from the Post newsroom reveal that the newspaper has a seven-part series ready for publication to prove that Bob McDonnell has had a lifelong hostility to those of the pink persuasion. He once pulled the pigtails of a little girl in the second grade, and as a third-grader he bounced a spitball, aimed at a male pal, off the shoulder of a girl two rows over. These are no doubt serious charges, violence against (tiny) women, sexual harassment and all that, but not likely to turn the tide of a runaway that is building in Virginia. Suddenly, the White House is treating the bereft Mr. Deeds as if he's on the fourth day of a three-day underarm deodorant pad. Bill Clinton, accustomed to speaking to cheering thousands at a hundred grand a pop, was dispatched the other night to a Deeds rally to set the throng on fire with one of his late-October stumpwallopers. The rally, such as it was, was held not at an arena or a hotel - not even a Motel 6 - but in a campaign office in the Washington suburbs. The "throng" was counted in the dozens, about the size of a PTA meeting. Not even Bubba could dispel the gloom of a wake. "These polls are either accurate, or they're not," he said, delivering an insight worthy of a Harvard political science professor. "So are the polls right? The answer is yes, no, and maybe." But what else could he say? Dispatched for mortuary duty, Bubba could only sympathize with the preacher called on to say something nice over the grave of the town bootlegger. Barack Obama himself is offering the mere minimum of presidential support over the past seven days of the campaign, just mailing it in (even if delivering the mail in person). He'll make one last appearance with Mr. Deeds this week in Tidewater. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the president's political aides continue to dish the obsequies over a doomed candidate while pretending to pray for a miracle. So far no one has invoked Harry Truman, patron saint of doomed candidates, but there's still a week to go. Mr. Deeds' friends are bitter about the anonymous voices peddling the discouraging word from the White House. "These 'anonymous voices' have decided those hard-working [down-ballot candidates] are just collateral damage in their effort to tell the world that if [Mr.] Deeds doesn't win, it is because he ignored advice," Paul Goldman, a former chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party, tells Politico, the Washington politics daily. "This isn't change we can believe in, but the same old, same old we voted out of office. Do they really believe their attempts to shield the president from blame is going to distract [Mr.] Obama's critics, much less change the arc of today's politics?" Of course it won't, and that's what makes the Virginia race so scary for the president's men. Voters will use whatever club is available to "send a message," and sometimes, as any number of pols could tell you, the club is big, rough and means business. • Wesley Pruden is editor emeritus of The Washington Times. Resolved Question: Why are Jews always persecuted.?

Throughout history, they have been persecuted, scapegoated and been the focus of aggro. But why the Jews? Early 1000s, the First crusade, thousands of jews were killed. The Jews were shipped out of france, germany, spain and had to go to poland. They were always the victims of pogroms. They got the blame for the black death, and as a result thousands of jews were crucified. Their temples and sacred places were destroyed early BCE. In the 1940s, USA, the Jews were unfairly treated in work, banned from joining clubs, walking into restaurants, their businesses were destroyed. Early 20th century, USA, race wars in detroit and riots led to the Jewish businesses being looted and burned. And the most infamous, the holocaust. But why is it that way? more

could you translate this text into serbian by tomorrow? please The London Stock Exchange Limited (LSE) is the world's oldest stock exchange and one of the top three stock exchanges in the world, after the New York and Tokyo exchanges. Founded in 1773 and reincorporated as a private limited company in 1986, the LSE is also the world leader in international share trading. The LSE operates a number of market products, including the main board listing, featuring more than 3,000 companies and including over 500 international companies, as well as the secondary AIM (Alternative Investment Market), established in 1995 as a vehicle for trades in small, high-growth companies. More than 70 companies are listed on the AIM board. After launching the Stock Exchange Electronic Trading Services (SETS) in 1997, the LSE introduced a new listing, techMARK, tailored to the specific needs of the high-technology sector and designed to compete with the NASDAQ index. With a total equity turnover value of more than £3.5 billion, the LSE achieved gross revenues of £149.8 million in 1999. The LSE is led by Chairman John Kemp-Welch and CEO Gavin Casey. Founded in 1773, the LSE reflects more than 200 years of the development of share-based enterprise. The world's first joint-stock company was created in the mid-16th century. Traditionally, companies were either owned by a single individual or through a partnership with two or more owners. While this arrangement sufficed for smaller businesses and stable market sectors, direct financial responsibility for riskier endeavors--such as the great trade exploration voyages of the period--were judged too precarious for an individual or limited group of investors. The organization of such a venture, that of a voyage to trace a northern sea route to the Far East from London in 1553, introduced the world's first shareholder-based company. Selling shares to a larger number of investors reduced the financial risk for each individual investor, while enabling the company itself to raise the capital needed to fund its operations. This first joint-stock company failed to find a northern sea route to the Far East. However, a meeting with Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible brought the company the exclusive rights to trade between Russia and England. The Muscovy Company, as it came to be called, became a commercial success, rewarded its shareholders with large profits, and inspired the creation of new investment ventures. The Muscovy Company served as the model for future shareholder-based companies. Investors contributed capital funding, while direction of the company's operations remained in the hands of its management. The investors, who were allowed to sell their holdings or buy more shares, were given dividends according to the company's profits. As more companies were set up following the Muscovy model, a new profession came into being, that of the broker, who acted as a middleman for trades of shares, helping to boost not only the number of joint-stock companies but also the number of investors. Adding impetus to this movement was the foundation of the Bank of England as a joint-stock company by King William III in order to provide funding for England's military campaign against France at the end of the 17th century. The shareholder system was given further support by legislation to limit and punish brokers for malpractice. By the 18th century, a flourishing "market" for shares was in place--so much so that the period marked the first stock market crash in 1720. While trading took place at the Royal Exchange through the middle of the century, the rowdy behavior--itself to become something of a tradition on the market floor--of certain brokers led to their exclusion. Instead of leaving the business, these brokers began meeting at Jonathan's Coffee House and other coffee shops in the Threadneedle Street area of London. In 1760, some 150 brokers founded their own club to buy and sell stock at Jonathan's. The following decade, in 1773, the members of the club changed its name to the Stock Exchange. As the individual broker members of the Stock Exchange began to establish brokerage firms, and the number of markets expanded, the Stock Exchange saw a need for new quarters. In 1801, the Stock Exchange began construction on a new building at what was to become its permanent London location. The following year, the Stock Exchange published a Deed of Settlement, formally outlining the operating rules and procedures of the stock market. If the original joint-stock companies were formed to provide funding for the many voyages of discovery, overseas trading, and foreign military campaigns, the shareholder-based company structure showed itself easily adaptable to the changing economic landscape of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution, coupled with such major infrastructure undertakings as the building of a national railroad system, provided the basis for the modern period of shareholder-b more

GPS Industries was acquired through a sale process conducted under Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Financial terms of the transactions were not disclosed. Falconhead has immediately established GPSI as the leading player in the golf cart-mounted GPS industry globally, with systems deployed on nearly 1,000 courses predominantly in North America and Europe. Falconhead expects that the acquisition of these businesses at very attractive valuations, and their combination, will result in significant cost, revenue and technological synergies that will position GPSI for significant profitable growth. In particular, GPSI will implement extensive product and service improvements that will benefit customers and enhance the playing experience for players around the world. Falconhead's partner in GPSI is Greg Norman, the professional golfer and head of Great White Shark Enterprises, a corporation primarily focused on golf. Mr. Norman, a long-time member of Falconhead's advisory board, was involved in conceiving and executing the transactions. He will own a significant equity stake in GPSI and has entered into an agreement to promote the company's business. As part of GPSI's long-term growth strategy, the Company has established an exclusive partnership with Club Car to leverage its sales force of more than 120 representatives and its extensive global distribution network. Club Car, a member of the Industrial Technologies sector of Ingersoll-Rand plc (NYSE: IR), is a leading manufacturer of golf cars, utility vehicles and a wide range of task-oriented vehicles serving multiple markets. David S. Moross, chairman and chief executive officer of Falconhead Capital, said: "We are proud to create the leading provider of cart-mounted GPS services to golf courses. The transactions that led to the formation of GPSI Holdings further demonstrate our ability to pursue and complete complex investment opportunities, and the new company is highly complementary to our investment strategy given our long ties to golf, and our expertise in leisure and lifestyle. By bringing together these three businesses, we have created a new company with the financial strength, operational efficiency, technology expertise, business model and geographic reach necessary to succeed over the long term. "We are fortunate that our friend Greg Norman is our partner in GPSI, given his immense stature in the golf world as a player and businessman. We look forward to working together to further build this powerful platform," Mr. Moross concluded. Mr. Norman said, "This transaction further promotes the consolidation of the industry which started with GPS Industries' acquisition of UpLink in late 2008 and now includes the merger with ProLink and ProView. This consolidation, together with other strategies, several of which specifically capitalize on the current economic landscape, will position GPSI to realize its full potential. It has been a pleasure to work closely with David and the Falconhead team, and we look forward to a very successful venture." Resolved Question: Fevola will not go to Brisbane?

"Armed with the luxury of holding two first-round national draft picks, the Swans are the Blues' only option if they are to rid themselves of their long-time problem child. A Brisbane source last night predicted Sydney would today make a huge play for Fevola after the Swans had previously publicly denied interest in Carlton's seven-time leading goal-kicker. The biggest potential deal in trade week was cancelled when both Brisbane players heading for Carlton -- Daniel Bradshaw and Michael Rischitelli -- last night rejected the move. Neither Bradshaw nor Rischitelli wanted to be a party to the straight swap that would have landed Fevola in Brisbane. Under AFL rules, to complete a trade package players must give their consent to move to another club. An angry Brisbane last night conceded it did not have a back-up plan of alternative players to do the deal and satisfy Carlton. "It was a business deal and it's off, the boys won't go," a Brisbane official said. The Lions were disappointed that the Blues could not convince Bradshaw and Rischitelli, both from Victoria, to move home." http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,26185114-2722,00.html Do you think he will go to Sydney? more

Resolved Question: What would you do in this ethical dilemma?

Sierra Club lobbies for stricter antipollution regulations, pushes companies to use more eco-friendly products and techniques, and leads wilderness trips to promote appreciation for nature. To raise money for its mission, the not for profit business began licensing its logo for a wide array of products. They have sold T-Shirts, Coffee mugs, and more. Now a company has approached Sierra Club about manufacturing a bed cover that will have organic cotton and vegetable dyes. However, the bed has synthetic fibers to keep the cover together thus kind of going against the mission. The bed cover will result in a much greater profit, would you recommend that the bed cover be licensed? more

Resolved Question: FEMALES ANSWER: WHY DO YOU FEMALES (ESPECIALLY BLACK) TAKE OFFENSE WHEN SOMEONE IS QUIET AT WORK?

This has been bothering me for awhile. I'm a real cool, laid back, talkative person outside of work. I'm a young (early 20's),straight, black male who has a LOOK like I'm just a big party person, who smoke/drink which I don't AT ALL! I think that surprises some people because I think they unfortunately judge me before getting to know me. My last two positions were sales at 2 major wireless providers. My first wireless job I was super focused lol. There were about 6 female and 4 male co-workers. It was my first good paying job because it was based off of hourly AND commission so when I started my job I never really spoke with my co-workers besides when I politely asked questions regarding the job such as a customer issue. Females, especially black, at my job would always ask "Why are you so quiet" and so on. I always told them that I just come to work to earn a paycheck. They always asked me to go out to the club with them but I politely declined. I LITERALLY keep business and personal separate. I have friends and a life outside of work. At my job I lead my store in sales my FIRST 5 months working so I just didn't care about making friends at work. I was always nice and courteous to EVERYONE including co-workers and especially customers. During the end of my tenure (almost 3 years) with the company one female co-worker said "Well you know everyone thought you were stuck-up or snobbish when you first started". I laughed and quickly said "What gave ya'll that idea" She then said "Because you were always quiet" How do people especially females relate "Quiet" with "Stuck-up" or "Snobbish". I just want to understand. I had the same issue at my second wireless job which only lasted for only 1 month because the females there were even worst! During this time I only had 3 female co-workers and 1 male co-worker. Instead of being adults and talking to me two of the females told the manager that I came to work as if I didn't want to be there like as if I had an attitude. That was just my third day there! I'm so confused because when I go to work I just want to work. I remember one female asked me what liquor do I drink. I told her that I don't drink at all. She made a face as if it made her upset lol. I love working with whoever it is. With MY experience most females especially black females always had a problem with me for some odd reason. I never ever had an issue of any sort with a male co-worker. It may be ironic that I'm quiet in a retail environment but I just love selling products and helping customers. Please help!!!!!My only thing is that if I was to ask " How was your day?" or "What you did you do last night?' I was just be bullshitting to be honest because I don't really care. Not to be mean or anything but I'm such a straight forward person I would feel like I'm lying to myself and the other person. more

Resolved Question: What are your thoughts on this Americans take on cricket? Do you think he missed something?

Today, This Week In Random Sports brings you cricket. No, not the shitty $10/month cell phone service that you only see on the North side of your city (or downtown depending on where you live). We’re talking real, live British/Indian Association cricket. Why you ask? Well that’s an excellent question, and one which we have no good answer for. Yet, we’ll try to formulate one. It all started last week at a company outing to the local minor league baseball game. I happened to be sitting in the near vicinity of two Indian folks (think dot com, no birds were harmed) and they began discussing cricket. I was somewhat intrigued (read, bored and roasting in the 90 degree heat) so I chimed in. They proceeded to explain how cricket works to me, and just like the old school game of telephone, I’ll relay those rules to you fine readers now after the jump. It all starts with the bowler. This is a bit of a contention around these parts as we are very, very staunch defenders of the fact that Sundays are for bowling. Therefore it is an unwritten rule that all cricket matches must begin on a Sunday. Look, we don’t make the rules, we just report them. Anyway, this bowler chap (like how we just drop into quaint British speak at our leisure?) tries to bowl the batter out. He basically throws a single seamed baseball at a dude with a cricket bat. The cricket bat, which is very handy in a barroom brawl, is shorter and wider than a traditional baseball bat. Think of that paddle that your principal used to beat that ass with before everyone’s parents pussed out and stopped spanking them. Once the guy pitches bowls the ball, all Hell breaks loose. Honestly, this is where I lost the thread of the conversation the other day. They started talking about how to make outs, how to score runs, and I hadn’t had any beer so my concentration was shot. I believe they said you can only get out if you hit the ball in the air to someone, miss the ball and let it hit a wicket (yes, they are called wickets in cricket as well), or if you fail to write software faster than the 2 Yanks that you’re trying to replace. You score by running in a straight line back and forth with a partner. The whole running with a partner thing sounds damned gay but it’d be hilarious if they ran into each other. I probably wouldn’t watch a 5-day match just to see that though. Apparently the five day matches aren’t as popular anymore as they’re supposed to be all formal and a dress-up occasion. There’s some new form of cricket called 20-over, or 20 something, or 21 Jump Street or some such shit. It’s supposed to be shorter and more fun because everyone just goes up there hacking like a beer league softball player instead of trying to slap it around like little Davie Eckstein. Either way, I’m sure cricket isn’t fun. It’s named after an annoying insect and you generally wear some goofy ass outfits to play it. Including some faggoty shin guards that make Barry Bonds’ armor look like cheesecloth. Cricket also led to the creation of country clubs starting at Sussex CCC (says Wikipedia). That should be sufficient proof that cricket officially Sussexes. Or something like that. Well, this has turned into a train wreck. We have a first in TWIRS, a game that appears to have no redeeming qualities. Too bad cricket, you really should follow the wireless carrier’s business model. Get people who are too poor to play a proper sport to jump on board. Now that’s the ticket!EDIT: Sourced from a blog. Will post the link shortly. more

Resolved Question: Why do people judge attractive people?

This is a cross between a rant and a question. I'd just like to know why people (especially other women) choose to negatively judge attractive women. I have worked as a glamour model (ie - Sports Illustrated type model), so by conventional standards am considered attractive. Now this has led to a lot of very unfortunate incidents with other people. One particular incident that stands out involved a man at a club approaching me and saying "I know you'll sleep with me, so if I can't find someone who's a bit more of a challenge, I'll come back to you at the end of the night" (I'm pretty sure he watches the Pick Up Artist to say something that insulting as a first liner). I was shocked! There wasn't even so much as a "hello". And to put things into perspective, I was wearing one of those Diane Von Furstenberg style wrap dresses, so I was classy looking in comparison to a lot of the other girls out that night. And today, the thing which has put me on todays rant, a women walked into the pet shelter I volunteer at and said to me "It's good to see young people doing something for the community", to which I responded I like to help where I can, and she said "well, it's good that your doing something constructive, I mean most young women in your position wouldn't spend the time of day helping." I asked her what she meant by that, to which she responded "well you all have rich husbands to look after you, so you never really have to work hard, unlike my daughter in college." Basically she insinuated that I might be a gold-digger (and thus whore), unintelligent and unable to work hard! I just wanted to slap her stupid face and say that I actually am enrolled in a really good college, and that I work a part-time job outside of my one day a week volunteering (and have been since I stopped modelling full time). Now, this gets to my questions - 1) Why do people do it? I mean like in both situations (and in most others), I've been minding my business and just going about what I want to, when these people appraoch me, so why? 2) What do you think gives people the right to comment on an attractive person (I've been called every name under the sun without provocation), when they wouldn't comment on a less-attractive person in the same way? 3) Do you judge attractive people in this way? If so, what do you normally think? Why. And just to add a side note - I don't usually wear much make-up (and certainly not in the pet shelter), I'm usually quite shy (not a "loud" type), and don't really approach these people or even really look at them when I'm approached, so I just don't understand why they do it when I clearly am not giving off any signals saying "approach me" more

Resolved Question: Generally, what SAT scores do I need to have to get to these colleges?

I studied about 15 minutes on the night before the test and I was wondering whether it is worth it to retake it this fall. Voting Question: Ladies, do you think that "deception" is the worst form of abuse when it is from Man to Woman ?

Deception. It is known as the secret weapon. Many of you do not know this, but it is very true. Deception is a form of abuse. Leading someone on and pretending to love and honor them is wrong. Many times you see Women marry the man of their dreams. He is a great father, an excellent husband, and lover to. But on the flip side of things, he is the opposite. He has another Woman on the side, he drinks. He tells you that he is going on a business trip, but he is actually a seller of drugs. He goes to strip clubs and fools around with hot, exotic Women. He lies in order to get certain business deals to benefit his needs. He is just a very corrupt man who is selfish and does not care about you, and he sees you as just a trophy girl, you have been conned. And your self esteem is so low, you think that you cannot live without him, and he KNOWS this to be so. He plays on your weakness to keep you bound. And when you find out his true colors, you fall to pieces. It is worse than being punched in the face, with his own hands. You have been used, and now that it has been exposed, you do not know what to do. What do you think ladies ? Is deception the worst form of abuse coming from a Man.................... more

Voting Question: Job Interviews tomorrow and next week! Help Business Graduate?

I recently graduated in May with a Bachelors in Business Administration - GENERAL. I am relocated to a metropolitan area Raleigh, NC and will share an apartment with my sister. I have an interview tomorrow at Target (part-time (stock, front-end, sales associate) and one at Macy's (2 fulltime positions- sales associate& Shoes associate). Hope to hear from them since they need an assistant manager. MY QUESTION!: I am wondering about negotiating pay. How much should i get paid to be an assistant manager, sales associate, sales manager, sales lead, coordinator, OVERALL RANGE and WHY? To be able to get a nice FIRST CAR Ford Escape, pay rent/expenses, have leisure fun, OVERALL SAVE!! How do i tell them? Please List Pay for part time and full time and hours per day&week and if u have a position at either store with a degree. What u get paid? I have no retail experience in a public job. I had a seasonal job after high school for the summer doing Payroll (& deducting child support from pay), calculating sales reports, handling employment forms, and preparing the mail. That job was like 40 hours a week (get off early on Saturdays and only Sundays off) and was paid $5.35 per hour! I have been Secretary and President in my organization in college. I have created sale event where we created Valentine baskets and raffles and made like $400 off. I have bought my organization from "Never heard of it" to "The club to be in". Most ACTIVE! I am a naturally hard worker and dedicated. I am passionate about fashion. Some family want me to just get a job! but i don't want just any job or something i'm not happy with like working in a bank..just not me. Dream/Goals: I want to have my own retail store one day selling fashion and if that does well add home decor. I feel working in retail will help me learn the ropes rather than thinking i know everything and lose.To add, most of the positions i've applied are 3 mins away from the apartment complex and I really feel i can move up in management quicker because i will be available more and may get the opportunity to open and close the store if anything comes up. Resolved Question: I want to understand something in the next paragraphs. They are from yahoo news.?

BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials outraged by the abuse of prisoners at the U.S.-run Abu Ghraib prison are trying to contain a scandal of their own as allegations continue to surface of mistreatment inside Iraqi jails. Accounts of Iraqis being beaten with clubs, blindfolded and coerced into signing false confessions are attracting increased attention partly because the United States is getting out of the prison business in Iraq. Since a security agreement took effect Jan. 1, the U.S. has transferred 841 detainees into Iraq's crowded prison system and more are on the way. Allegations of mistreatment have persisted since 2005, when U.S. troops raided an Interior Ministry lockup in a predominantly Shiite area of southeastern Baghdad and found scores of emaciated prisoners. The matter returned to the spotlight after the June 12 assassination of Sunni lawmaker Harith al-Obeidi, an outspoken advocate of prisoner rights. The issue is a test of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's commitment to the rule of law and to reconcile with the Sunni minority, who account for most of the prisoners held in security cases. Sunnis claim they are being unfairly targeted by security forces run by al-Maliki's Shiite-dominated government. "The cases are as bad as what took place at Abu Ghraib, but it is painful when these things take place in Iraqi prisons," said Sunni lawmaker Salim Abdullah. "We met some of those who were released and saw the scars on their skins. They use different kinds of torture like tying the shoulders and hanging the body, which normally leads to dislocation of the shoulders." -The question is: In the third paragraph, the writer said " The cases are as bad as what took place at Abu Ghraib". Isn't he talking about abu gharib prison from the first paragraph? more

Resolved Question: Should I stay or should I leave him? His new "business" is tearing us apart.?

I feel like Ive been looking at things like this all night, only he's not abusive, or drunk, or cheating. The simple truth is we have been growing apart and his hobby/company is getting to be to much. We have been together for 8 years, we have a house and a life together, I care for him a lot and I know he cares for me...however it seems these days that love and caring may not be enough. Our wants and goals could not be more different, he has changed dramatically from the person I fell in love with and every day has become a struggle. We fight a lot and it seems to me it has hit its pinnacle since he started his new "company" over a year a go. I understand and support his dreams but what is the limit?...he puts on concerts as a hobby. it consumes our life's and our money. the concerts range anywhere from 3000 dollars to over 5000 dollars and he throws around 4 a year. Not only could we have bought a new car with the amount of money spent on the ventures with little or no return it takes months of planning, involves him being at the clubs promoting on a constant basis and the month or two leading up to the show stress and everything else getting put on the back burner. This includes bills and myself. he will literally spend the few weeks prior to the show on the computer and on the phone from when he wakes up, until he goes to bed. We hit a breaking point in march I said I was done playing second fiddle to this, he said he was sorry and he would work on it. He has, it is not as excessive as before however it is still at the fore front of almost all issues, it is always a bone of contention. I believe he will resent me for not letting him go all out so to speak, that he will feel held back..and possibly blame me for its failure if it does indeed fail. I don't have the heart to ask him to quit his dream even if it tears us apart...and it is. We have been trying to reach a compromise, trying to find a way to find a balance and Ill I can see if the rift between us getting bigger and bigger. I would never ask him to give up his dream however I did not think I would always have to compete with this hobby or that it would be our life style for the next 10 years. Im at my wits end, can our love really be enough?Im not staying this is our only problem, we have many...this is one im asking about, this is the one that at the very moment is the biggest. more

I'm taking three honors classes (maybe four) and I will pretty much be in Honors/AP classes for the rest of my years in high school. I'm playing Field Hockey (my 4th year), Tennis, and Softball, and I'm joining the yearbook committee, art club, FBLA (future business leaders of America) and photography club. All of this along with volunteer work at the animal shelter, Cancer Relays, and the NHS (national honor society) So...All of this adds up to this situation: My mom wants me to go to Princeton and become a doctor. I hate New Jersey (I live here) and I don't want to be stuck here for 4 years after high school. Plus all the extra years of med school....I never liked science class, especially life science, and I would never want to be a doctor. Its too much work, messes up your mentality, and it's very hard to get good pay in this line of work. I, on the other hand, want a job in the fashion industry (hopefully in design, but maybe working at a magazine as a journalist, as writing has always been a strong quality of mine) I want to go to Parsons School for Design. I have always loved New York, even when I was little. This is one of the best fashion schools in the US, and I think it will open up a lot of opprotunites for me with wanting to have this career. Fashion is something I have always loved, and it makes me happy to have people compliment me on my designs that I draw, even if it takes forever to make it big as a designer. So, this super long explanation leads me to the question: Who is right? Is my mom right in wanting me to go to one of the best schools in the world to become a doctor which is a job that will last me a long time? Or am I right for wanting to go somewhere that might make my dreams come true, and is also a very good school? Please help me. I know college may seem like a long time away for me (as I have four more years) but i think that it's never too early to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life. Please share experiences, and suggestions. Thank you so much! ( ~ 8* more

Resolved Question: Everybody, please help remember this movie!!!?

It's driving me crazy!!!!! I cant remember the name of this movie. Only thing I know is that it's a gangster movie. Lot of black people play in it. And the scene i'm about to describe is the only one that can lead me to the title of this movie. Maybe somebody remembers this scene. They're in a nightclub, blue lights flashing across the room, and there's a black dude standing in the middle of the club, I think it was the club owner, and this other black dude(one of the leading actors of the movie i think) walks up to him to talk some business with him. But when the guy ask the club owner something about business he says, and this you might recognize: "I don't talk business after 5"(or 6 p.m. dont remember exactly) and then the guy says to the club owner something like: Aight you'se a fly a ss n*gga/mother f*cker. Something like that. Club owner was wearing a Ecko/Sir Benni Miles/Karl Kani suite and had glasses on, and he had a nice beret on his head, maybe Gucci or some other expensive brand. The movie definitly involved drugs, and the movie is not an old one. I think it came out in 2006 or 2005. I could be wrong but it was a fairly new movie. So don't be thinking in the classics genre. Thanks in advance for the help. And it's not American Gangster, as some people said when I asked the question earlier. I guess it was not really class A material. Could be wrong though. It's not Belly either. Damn, doesnt ANYBODY know this movie? more

Voting Question: Can someone proof read my appeal and give feedback thanks!?

APPEAL FOR FINANCIAL AID REINSTATEMENT Dear Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships: I’m writing this letter to ask you to reconsider your decision to reject my financial aid. Previously while in college I can honestly say that I wasn’t mentally prepared to be there. I failed to manage my time, get tutors when needed, apply myself, and ultimately understand what I was in college for. Also my father became unable to work and take care of his house hold which gradually became depressing and pressuring being I was the only child available. My grades started to slip and I wasn’t able to complete courses which ultimately led to me withdrawing from college in 2005 and returning home to assist my father. Now at the age of 25 I can honestly say that I am prepared and focused for college. I’m ready to receive the Grass Root skills and knowledge that college will prepare me with so I can be successful. I have made a list of steps I need in order to be successful. • I will obtain a tutor for classes I find difficult. • Meet with each of my instructors to find out what would make me a better student in their class. • Manage my time to minimize leisure and maximize my studies. • Join clubs and organizations related to my major offered by the school My short term goal is to earn a degree in Public Relations with a minor in Business. Without financial aid, I lack the financial ability to continue my education. I’m a hard working student and I will prove so in the upcoming summer term. My education is of paramount importance to me because it is the Grass Roots to my success. I am willing to work hard. I've learned a valuable lesson. And only ask for a second chance to prove my dedication. Your kind and favorable consideration would be most appreciated. (My Name). more

Resolved Question: ENFP, INFP, ENTJ, or INTJ?

I'm 17 and I was wondering about my MBTI type. I'm definitely intuitive (probably dominant, I SUCK at sensing) and fall along the Fi-Te spectrum (FP or TJ). I originally thought I was an ENFP but my extraverted thinking function had gotten extremely strong recently (much stronger that most ENFPs my age) just a few things about me 1) as a child, I was extremely INFPish 2) when I get angry, agitated, I tend to use extraverted thinking a lot (when I'm really angry, it gets vicious) 3) my Fi is very strong (when I see babies and small animals, I turn to mush) 4) my Te is pretty strong too. I have a lot of fun with it because it makes me seem more mature and business like (I've also noticed my sense of humor is different with this function) 5) every since I can remember, I've been extremely independent and ambitious (I'm not pleased to say I have an authority problem) 6) I HATE being controlled and controlling other people 7) I'm wild and crazy, but I'm also comfortable being very business like (sometimes my humor is ENFPish other times ENTJish) 8) most of my teachers say I'm extremely intelligent (although I don't see much value in it) 9) my social skills are fairly weak for an ENFP, I usually like individuals, but I consider most groups of people, stupid and irrational 10) my intrapersonal and extrapersonal intelligence are extremely high. I can usually help people solve problems 11) I suck at remembering details, but I'm quite logical 12) my interests are wide ranged including fencing, singing (choir and classical voice lessons), business, and anything to do with nature 13) introversion vs extraversion is extremely weak, I need time alone and with others 14) sometimes when thinking about business I fall into INTJ mode and have lots of fun 15) I can go from discussing philosophy one minute to dancing with 10 girls at a club the next 16) I can lead with Te and Fi or intuition quite easily and can switch between them at will 17) I connect a lot with most anime and RPG and adventure games 18) I have the maturity of a 5 year old in some areas but the maturity of a 40 year old in others. 19) I have a strong feminine side and am not afraid of it 20) extremely INFP like fantasies 21) very strong values 22) hardcore libertarian 23) I see a lot of my vices in Anakin Skywalker (minus his stupid decision making) and hate him for it 24) I relate strongly to Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind 25) generally I get along well with some SPs (usually I hate them or love them) NFPs, NTJs, ISFJs and ESTJs 26) I tend to get in trouble for moving and acting like I have more value than people think I'm worth 27) I hate rules and almost never care what people think. My guidelines are; what is true, what is right, what is the best, and what do I want 28) if my inner balance is off, I cannot function 29) I usually notice this immediately and relax with a cup of tea while my mind sifts out the problem 30) self improvement is extremely important to me (although I'm not as disciplined as I'd like to be) 31) I try to cry in sad movies, but I can't 32) I relate strongly to Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer 33) people with stupid believes irritate me and if I say something that is true but offends them, I usually laugh 34) I such with all technology (hence how I know I'm not Ti) I know this is a lot but I wanted to make sure thorough info. is available to evaluate. thank you for reading ;D more

Voting Question: Is This Girl Still Interested In Me?

I was dating this very attractive young lady for a short time and we had a fallen out. Anyway, I ended up going to her job and we hung out and everything was cool. I asked her when she was available and she said the next day. I was busy the next day and called her two days later but she never returned my call. Her job called my office and told me I left my wallet there. Her job was able to reach me at my office because I gave her co-worker my business card when I was there. Anyway, I saw her friend recently at a club and he called her and left a message in regards to me. Her friend needs my help to finalize an adoption. He has been calling me every day. Today, he said he spoke to her and she was telling him how excited she was when I came to her job and that I left my wallet there but she could not contact me because she erased my cell number for her phone previously when we had a fallen out. Notably, she never had my office number. Also, I never mentioned the wallet situation to her friend prior to this conversation. Still, her friend's story doesn't make sense because when I called her after I saw her at her job two days later, I remember leaving my cell number on her voicemail because I figured that she no longer had it. It could be that she didn't know it was me because I referred to myself by my nickname in the message but it still doesn't add up. Her friend might be trying to lead me on in order to get me to continue to help him. What do you think? Also, it should be noted that the friend told me that she asked him to text her my number but he didn't do it yet because he was stressed out and busy with the adoption situation. more
