Business tax working group set up

The Treasury is to set up a working group with representatives of some of the world's biggest multinational companies to look at the future of business taxation in the UK, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has announced.

The Government-business forum, chaired by Financial Secretary to the Treasury Jane Kennedy, will have a remit to ensure that competitiveness remains at the heart of any future reforms to the system, said Mr Darling.

He said the group will discuss ways in which the tax system can provide the long-term certainty that multinational companies need in the face of increased competitiveness and other global challenges facing both business and Government.

Speaking to a conference at Chatham House in London, Mr Darling said: "We need to anticipate a growing problem for all governments - how to protect revenues in an increasingly global market place for goods and services while promoting the competitiveness of our businesses so that they can take advantage of open markets. more

Business burden to be reduced, says Government

Changes to tax return requirements will reduce compliance costs for business, the Government says.

Legislation would be introduced next month.

In a joint statement Finance Minister Michael Cullen and Revenue Minister Peter Dunne said businesses would have fewer tax returns to do, with less calculating required and a reduced number of tax payments to make.

Main changes were:

* The PAYE once a month filing and payment threshold will be raised from $100,000 to $250,000. This aimed to allow small- and medium-enterprise employers to file and pay deductions once – instead of twice – a month.

* The fringe benefit tax (FBT) annual return filing threshold would rise from $100,000 to $250,000. Annual filing for companies with few shareholders would be available if their FBT liability rose solely from provision of up to two vehicles to shareholder-employees. more

Tega Cay maps out plan, future goals

Last fall, Moody set up a booth at the Tega Cay Fall Festival and asked residents to fill out survey cards. The survey asked for an interpretation of the city's motto, "The good life," and asked residents to state their favorite and least favorite things about Tega Cay. It also gave residents a chance to weigh in on what they consider the heart of the city to be and how they would spend $10 million to improve the city.

"We use the survey responses to give clues for the policies," Moody said. "There were multiple mentions of parks and trails and the lake, so we don't want to forget about those when we're developing specific policies under the plan."

The comprehensive plan is intended to act as an "umbrella" under which all of the city's zoning, growth and development policies will fall, Moody said. more
