Businesses will shine in Chambers’ ‘Find It in Fayette’ Community Expo

The Fayette County Chamber will provide an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products and services to the community at the "Find it in Fayette" Community Expo coming in September. Why fight Atlanta traffic when we can "Find it in Fayette?" Fayette businesses provide a wide variety of goods and services, and the Expo will spotlight what is available right here in our backyard. The 2008 "Find in Fayette" Community Expo will be held on Friday, Sept. 19 (3 p.m.-7 p.m.) and Saturday, Sept 20 (11 a.m.- 3 p.m.) at New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville. This annual event is free to the community and will offer tasty samples from local restaurants, interesting product demonstrations, and a chance to see what Fayette has to offer consumers. And this year, the Expo will last for two days to give more of the community a chance to participate. more

Euro zone business activity at 2001 lows

Euro zone business activity contracted more sharply than expected in July, hitting the lowest level since just after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a key survey shows today.

The euro zone's purchasing managers' index (PMI), compiled by data and research group Markit, slid to 47.8 points in July, from 49.3 in June, according to an initial estimate.

The drop, which indicated that private sector activity in the 15-country zone was at the lowest level since November 2001, was worse than economists' expectations for a result of 48.7 points.

Home-Grown Apps Invite Headaches, IDC Says

IDC interviewed 139 corporate development firms for the 'Improving Software Quality to Drive Business Agility' survey, which was commissioned by software quality measurement supplier Coverity.

The survey respondents described security, quality, code integrity, and business relevance as the most important factors on which to focus for software development. Security, customer-facing software, desktop, and transaction processing applications are updated at least daily by around a quarter of respondents.

"The increased complexity of software development environments and the cost of fixing defects in the field (rather than early in the software lifecycle) combine in exorbitant ways to drain income and to hamstring businesses as a result of critical software downtime," said Melinda-Carol Ballou, program director of application lifecycle management at IDC, and author of the report. more

Lawmakers Updated On ICARE

Updates on a popular health insurance program for small businesses and a new program to help Kentuckians in long-term care receive Medicaid were given to state lawmakers.

Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark spoke to the first meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Banking and Insurance since taking her new job on July 16. The ICARE program has been steadily growing since it was first passed by the General Assembly in 2006, she said. More than 20 companies each month have signed up for the program, which grants small businesses funds to help pay for health insurance for their employees.

In order to qualify for the pilot program, the businesses must employ 25 or fewer people and not currently offer health insurance. The small businesses may also qualify if they have an employee with a high cost condition. more
