Mary Robinson: Human rights are good for business

Net Impact brings together corporate leaders, civil society representatives and business students with the aim of developing a community of new leaders who will make a positive impact on society.

The architect and president of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative, Robinson says that Realizing Rights has been focusing on the need for the private sector to recognise and act on its responsibilities in making globalisation a positive force for all – and that includes respecting human rights.

Robinson spoke to INSEAD Knowledge about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and human rights on the sidelines of the conference.

Knowledge: When we think of CSR, we normally think of issues such as CO2 emissions and supply chains. Where do human rights, traditionally accepted as the government’s responsibility to protect, fit in the business arena? What is the connection between human rights and CSR?

Robinson: More and more business leaders understand that many of the issues they address already are of direct relevance to human rights. more

UPDATE 1-SAP says will reach upper end of 2008 outlook

"We can attribute our strong performance to good overall execution and the continued strength in all three core areas of our business," Chief Executive Henning Kagermann said in a statement.

SAP said on April 30 it saw full-year 2008 software and software-related service revenue increasing in a range of 24-27 percent at constant currencies. It now expects to reach the upper end of that range.

The outlook excludes a revenue write-down from last year's acquisition of Business Objects -- its biggest ever -- of around 180 million euros.

SAP -- whose software helps customers automate, integrate and manage their businesses -- said its SAP business, excluding the contribution from Business Objects, will contribute 12-14 percentage points to this growth. Continued... more

Businesses wary about economic recovery: survey

The National Association for Business Economics (NABE) said its quarterly poll found a split on growth expectations for the world's biggest economy, an improvement over the first-quarter survey.

"Respondents to the July NABE Industry Survey were more varied than in the decidedly downbeat April survey about recent results and the next few quarters, but they were far from ebullient," Ken Simonson, chief economist of Associated General Contractors of America, said in a statement.

Of the survey's 101 respondents -- economists at US businesses and industry associations -- 44 percent forecast annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth above 1.0 percent in the second half of the year. Forty-five percent saw sluggish growth between zero and 1.0 percent and 10 percent expected a decline. more

Dunkin’ Donuts opens in Clemson

The new business growth in the city is amazing, Abernathy said. Theres a lot going on. We have new businesses popping up left and right.

The Dunkin Donuts store will be the chains 13th in the Upstate, said Bart Thorne, president and chief operating officer for the franchisee, Kainos Partners.

The franchisee has plans to develop more than 70 Dunkin Donuts restaurants in the Upstate and Columbia, Thorne said.

Clemson was selected in part because of its size and the location near Clemson University, said spokesman John Taylor.

The partners have done a lot of research on the Upstate, and Clemson is one of the places they want to be, Taylor said. They are very optimistic about the location right there on Tiger Boulevard and the close proximity to all of the students and the faculty and staff who work at Clemson. more

Business Factoring Lead Questions asked

Resolved Question: Might it be hard for Westerners to understand Chinese "Human Rights"?

Based on historical evidence from over the past two thousand years or so, Chinese culture places a much lower value on human life than that currently found in Western civilization. As the Chinese population continues to grow, and resources begin to shrink, this cultural viewpoint is likely to maintain its influence. Thus, China could easily commit a few million troops to overrun any area it might choose, without regard to loss of life. Likewise, the CCP can eliminate any dissidents seeking to "modernize" the culture (as in "globalization"), with little repercussions. And, widespread deaths in coal mines and industrial accidents, or from short-cutting quality control (e.g. the powered milk and lead painted toys scandals) are seen as common business practices with acceptable losses of human life. Might this cultural factor (disregard for Human Rights, as well as the environment) be so contrary to the viewpoints embedded in Western cultures that it could generate misjudgments during political/economic negotiations? Do you know of any other examples where this has recently occurred? Might it be totally unreasonable for Western countries to expect ANY progress in the area of Human Rights and environmental issues, so long as China continues to have such an immense and expendable population, and extremely little motivation to head in that direction?CHN - Thorough response, thanks. Patrick - I can understand Traditional Mandarin. However, you type in the bastardized form of Chinese created by the CCP. 很遺憾,您無法讀取真實中國.Sailor - You refer to a simple question as being "silly." I'm not sure why you didn't understand the question. Individual perceptions of the world and one's values vary according to cultural upbringing. I was inquiring as to whether Chinese culture/history is so diametrically opposed to Western culture/history in regards to the value of human life, that it might lead to great misunderstandings during attempts to mutually improve the environment (such as curtailing the use of coal-fired power plants) and settle issues of human rights (such as invoking due process of law). more

Voting Question: How do you guys feel about IVOB? Penny stock now? But....?

But they just hit the news! INVO Bioscience, Inc. (OTCBB: IVOB), a medical device company focused on treatment options for patients diagnosed with infertility, announces that the US National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a 100 patient study being conducted by Galaxy IVF in three INVO centers in Pakistan. The purpose of the study is to evaluate a low cost stimulation protocol combined with INVO to make an IVF affordable procedure available across the large infertile/sub-fertile population. The study will use a minimum ovarian stimulation protocol with the primary endpoint being number of follicles obtained and the fertilization rate. The secondary endpoints will be pregnancy rate and cost of treatment. Recruitment has begun for the study and Dr. Ranoux will be attending the first INVO cycles at each of the clinical sites. Galaxy IVF has discontinued the original study started in the IVF center in Lahore because of major protocol violations by the site. The new study will be performed in INVO centers that have been trained and have already performed INVO cycles per the protocols outlined in the INVOcell Instructions for Use. This additional data will support the widespread acceptance of the INVO in the Middle East. The approved protocol can be reviewed at the NIH site link: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01058252?term=Galaxy+Pharma&rank=1 or the WHO site link: http://apps.who.int/trialsearch/Trial.aspx?TrialID=NCT01058252 About INVO Bioscience INVO Bioscience (IVOB) is a medical device company, headquartered in Beverly, Massachusetts, focused on creating simplified, lower cost treatment options for patients diagnosed with infertility. Resolved Question: What do u think of Ron Paul's article: " Keynesianism Delivers a Decade of Zero "?

" Texas Straight Talk A weekly column Keynesianism Delivers a Decade of Zero This past week we celebrated the end of what most people agree was a decade best forgotten. New York Times columnist and leading Keynesian economist Paul Krugman called it the Big Zero in a recent column. He wrote that “there was a whole lot of nothing going on in measures of economic progress or success” which is true. However, Krugman continues to misleadingly blame the free market and supposed lack of regulation for the economic chaos. It was encouraging that he admitted that blowing economic bubbles is a mistake, especially considering he himself advocated creating a housing bubble as a way to alleviate the hangover from the dotcom bust. But we can no longer afford to give prominent economists like Krugman a pass when they completely ignore the burden of taxation, monetary policy, and excessive regulation. Afterall, Krugman is still scratching his head as to why “no” economists saw the housing bust coming. How in the world did they miss it? Actually many economists saw it coming a mile away, understood it perfectly, and explained it many times. Policy makers would have been wise to heed the warnings of the Austrian economists, and must start listening to their teachings if they want solid progress in the future. If not, the necessary correction is going to take a very long time. The Austrian free-market economists use common sense principles. You cannot spend your way out of a recession. You cannot regulate the economy into oblivion and expect it to function. You cannot tax people and businesses to the point of near slavery and expect them to keep producing. You cannot create an abundance of money out of thin air without making all that paper worthless. The government cannot make up for rising unemployment by just hiring all the out of work people to be bureaucrats or send them unemployment checks forever. You cannot live beyond your means indefinitely. The economy must actually produce something others are willing to buy. Government growth is the opposite of all these things. Bureaucrats are loathe to face these unpleasant, but obvious realities. It is much more appealing to wave their magic wand of regulation and public spending and divert blame elsewhere. It is time to be honest about our problems. The tragic reality is that this fatally flawed, but widely accepted, economic school of thought called Keynesianism has made our country more socialist than capitalist. While the private sector in the last ten years has experienced a roller coaster of booms and busts and ended up, nominally, about where we started in 2000, government has been steadily growing, because Keynesians told politicians they could get away with a tax, spend and inflate policy. They even encouraged it! But we cannot survive much longer if government is our only growth industry. As for a lack of regulation, the last decade saw the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the largest piece of financial regulatory legislation in years. This act failed to prevent abuses like those perpetrated by Bernie Madoff, and it is widely acknowledged that the new regulations contributed heavily not only to the lack of real growth, but also to many businesses going overseas. Americans have been working hard, and Krugman rightly points out that they are getting nowhere. Government is expanding steadily and keeping us at less than zero growth when inflation is factored in. Krugman seems pretty disappointed with zero, but if we continue to listen to Keynesians in the next decade instead of those who tell us the truth, zero will start to look pretty good. The end result of destroying the currency is the wiping out of the middle class. Preventing that from happening should be our top economic priority. Posted by Ron Paul (01-04-2010, 01:36 PM) filed under Monetary Policy "vani he had the solutions BEFORE the crash last year, but people like you wanted him to shut up about the problem. Isn't it time to start listening?Heather, it is amusing. They tend to emit a cloud of technical jargon designed to confuse the listener, which refers to models only necessary -- or even relevant -- if you accept the Keynesian principles to begin with. more

Voting Question: Does my letter of motivation looks strong enough or does it need any changes?

I apply for grad school and have to wrire motivation letter. Can anyone look through it and see if there any grammar mistakes or if the structure is unclear? Director of the Program xx KTH December 18, 2009 Dear Sir or Madam: I have been at my last year of school at American University in Bulgaria, with a major of Business Administration. During my studies majority of the courses were focused on the main challenges and concerns related to the successful global functioning of organizations, critical skills needed to properly start and manage ventures and analytical tools and models used in problem solving. My undergraduate education at American University in Bulgaria has not only given me a certain set of valuable skills but has also helped me to understand my academic strengths and weaknesses and my fields of interest. While taking a course of Marketing I received a deep insight into creating, developing and assessing projects. Besides studying the theory, I had to create a product which would be innovative and successful on global market, evaluating all the advantages of disadvantages in terms of cultural aspects, geographical location, customer demand in particular region and many other crucial factors which help to determine the successful realization of the product. Operational Supply Management was the other useful courses where I acquired the necessary skills to start and manage projects following the key management concept of planning, organizing , leading and controlling. My study abroad experience at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky has given me additional knowledge in my field and has made my communication skills more effective. Taking such courses as Management Science and Management helped me to understand how important it is for the company to be more innovative and entrepreneurial. I acquired necessary skills of how these invention can properly function, how they can be managed and how they can be realized within specific organization. In addition to that, frequent work in groups for creating a project have built good team work understanding and involvement I believe that possession of such critical skills an effective communication, creativity and collaboration can qualify me as a candidate to your program. I am someone who is able to learn quickly and adapt to new environments and perform under pressure. I love to be challenged, to explore new ideas, I am always eager to learn and engage in several activities, which helps me to manage my time more efficiently and be more productive. Furthermore, studying in American University in Bulgaria gave me sufficient amount of quantitative knowledge and assisted in developing my analytical thinking skills needed to properly analyze and assess innovative projects. After completing the Master`s Programme my goal is to start my career in one of the innovative companies, where I will be able to utilize my practical and theoretical knowledge to attain the prosperity of organization. With education in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, I will gain a relevant knowledge of innovation and entrepreneurship combined with strong real world experience that will help me to build my further development as innovation leader and provide with a basis for the start-up of my own business venture . Resolved Question: What do you think was the greatest factor that catapulted Obama to the Presidency?

Most presidents have had some track record before becoming President. Some have been Governors, senators or had other legitimate credentials to lead this nation. Obama obviously did not have any experience in business, or running a corporation, world affairs, finances or actually leading anything. Resolved Question: Should we "Go Cheney" on climate change?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/opinion/09friedman.html?em=&pagewanted=print December 9, 2009 OP-ED COLUMNIST Going Cheney on Climate By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN In 2006, Ron Suskind published “The One Percent Doctrine,” a book about the U.S. war on terrorists after 9/11. The title was drawn from an assessment by then-Vice President Dick Cheney, who, in the face of concerns that a Pakistani scientist was offering nuclear-weapons expertise to Al Qaeda, reportedly declared: “If there’s a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping Al Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response.” Cheney contended that the U.S. had to confront a very new type of threat: a “low-probability, high-impact event.” Soon after Suskind’s book came out, the legal scholar Cass Sunstein, who then was at the University of Chicago, pointed out that Mr. Cheney seemed to be endorsing the same “precautionary principle” that also animated environmentalists. Sunstein wrote in his blog: “According to the Precautionary Principle, it is appropriate to respond aggressively to low-probability, high-impact events — such as climate change. Indeed, another vice president — Al Gore — can be understood to be arguing for a precautionary principle for climate change (though he believes that the chance of disaster is well over 1 percent).” Of course, Mr. Cheney would never accept that analogy. Indeed, many of the same people who defend Mr. Cheney’s One Percent Doctrine on nukes tell us not to worry at all about catastrophic global warming, where the odds are, in fact, a lot higher than 1 percent, if we stick to business as usual. That is unfortunate, because Cheney’s instinct is precisely the right framework with which to think about the climate issue — and this whole “climategate” controversy as well. “Climategate” was triggered on Nov. 17 when an unidentified person hacked into the e-mails and data files of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, one of the leading climate science centers in the world — and then posted them on the Internet. In a few instances, they revealed some leading climatologists seemingly massaging data to show more global warming and excluding contradictory research. Frankly, I found it very disappointing to read a leading climate scientist writing that he used a “trick” to “hide” a putative decline in temperatures or was keeping contradictory research from getting a proper hearing. Yes, the climate-denier community, funded by big oil, has published all sorts of bogus science for years — and the world never made a fuss. That, though, is no excuse for serious climatologists not adhering to the highest scientific standards at all times. That said, be serious: The evidence that our planet, since the Industrial Revolution, has been on a broad warming trend outside the normal variation patterns — with periodic micro-cooling phases — has been documented by a variety of independent research centers. As this paper just reported: “Despite recent fluctuations in global temperature year to year, which fueled claims of global cooling, a sustained global warming trend shows no signs of ending, according to new analysis by the World Meteorological Organization made public on Tuesday. The decade of the 2000s is very likely the warmest decade in the modern record.” This is not complicated. We know that our planet is enveloped in a blanket of greenhouse gases that keep the Earth at a comfortable temperature. As we pump more carbon-dioxide and other greenhouse gases into that blanket from cars, buildings, agriculture, forests and industry, more heat gets trapped. What we don’t know, because the climate system is so complex, is what other factors might over time compensate for that man-driven warming, or how rapidly temperatures might rise, melt more ice and raise sea levels. It’s all a game of odds. We’ve never been here before. We just know two things: one, the CO2 we put into the atmosphere stays there for many years, so it is “irreversible” in real-time (barring some feat of geo-engineering); and two, that CO2 buildup has the potential to unleash “catastrophic” warming. When I see a problem that has even a 1 percent probability of occurring and is “irreversible” and potentially “catastrophic,” I buy insurance. That is what taking climate change seriously is all about. If we prepare for climate change by building a clean-power economy, but climate change turns out to be a hoax, what would be the result? Well, during a transition period, we would have higher energy prices. But gradually we would be driving battery-powered electric cars and powering more and more of our homes and factories with wind, solar, nuclear and second-generation biofuels. We would be much less dependent on oil dictators who have drawn a bull’s-eye on our backs; our trade deficit would improve; the dollar would strengthen; and the air we breathe would be cleaner. more

Resolved Question: Is my answer okay to this question? Need your economic expertise?

Do accidents cause people? Children born out of wed lock are commonly viewed as accidents, an unwanted side effect of intercourse. It was therefore widely expected that better contraception and the legalization of abortion would sharly decrease the number of such children. In fact, the pattern has been the opposite. Improved contraception and increased access to abortion developed Western societies has been associated with a sharp, perhaps unparelleled increase in births. Can you offer explanations for that consistent with the economic approach to human behaviour? This is my answer, please let me know if I should elaborate more. Due to recent advancements of contraception and more openly-legalized abortions, unintended pregnancies have caused the population to increase causing economic strain on society. Due to the fact these saviors such as birth control are now more pertinent and readily available; people feel the need to be more sexually active and irresponsible which leads to more births. Some individuals may make their decisions based on lack of morality, education, and economical factors. Assuming everyone who has an unwanted pregnancy believes and decides to abort, the cost of abortion would be the only concern if money really mattered. In Economics Uncut on pg 320, the average price of an abortion is listed to be $370. However the amount of service an abortion clinic is receiving at that time may dictate the price of their services. If someone is in a rural area and plans to have an abortion, they may pay a higher price due to the lack of clinic availability and the amount of business received. Due to recent hardship for some, an abortion may be too expensive even though making the opposite decision would be a life long expensive choice to others. I believe people who cannot afford to abort may end up relying on government assistance to aid them financially. When government aid is dependent upon by these parties, taxpayers are doomed to pick up the extra charges and this cycle effects everyone economically and continues to circulate to the next generation if they are not educated properly about abstinence and contraception. more

Fact: Obama has created the largest deficit by a factor of 3 ($1.42 Trillion vs. the previous record of $472 Billion), mostly comprised to bailout and stimulus given to banks, unions and ACORN which installed the puppet teleprompter into office. Fact: Obama's mouthpieces claim media outlets who fact check him, his lies and the lies of his subordinates are not legitimate whereas media outlets who fact check comedy sketches and those which admit to creaming their pants everytime Obama reads the teleprompter are legitimate. Fact: Obama said he would usher in the most open and bipartisan era in Washington whereas Obama and his henchmen created a vile toxic atmosphere which make the Bush and Clinton years seem like the Garden of Eden. Most Americans agree - Barack Hussein Obama is America's biggest failure and mistake since murderer Ted Kennedy's Immigration Act of 1965 which has lead to America's path toward a race to the bottom - economically, intellectually, morally and politically. Resolved Question: Does government escape productivity because they are accountable to no one?

Successful businesses such as GE and IBM and others, periodically have 'efficiency experts' come in to assess the workmanship, the productivity rate and efficiency, and other factors which if not monitored, would lead to ruin. When these experts finish their overview and observations, they give management a rundown, suggesting ways to improve productivity, morale, and in general, to make more and more money, and to have a successful company. These reviews and assessments are worth the money the companies pay them. Now, my question has to do with our government, federal, state and local. If YOU were one of those who observe and check things out, being your own efficiency expert, how would YOU rate our various government levels? You can give grades like in school, but it would be nice if you were specific in your report ! more

Resolved Question: Why Can't Democrats Just Be Honest About Their Desire To Takeover Health Insurance?

A government health insurance plan sounds nice and pretty, but when you consider a little bit of history concerning the government and its regulation of the private insurance market and consider basic economics it's pretty darn clear that as time goes on more and more people will be forced into government run plans. First, the lie that the government wishes to just "compete" with private insurers is complete BOGUS. The federal (and state governments) already heavily regulate the private insurance market. Over the years governments (both state and federal) have required insurers to cover more and more procedures, many which have nothing to do with health thereby forcing customers to shell out more money instead of just simply allowing consumers to customize their plan....you know kinda like how you do with other insurance. Also doctors spend around 30 billion per year (according to CNN) on malpractice insurance. So if we could have some tort reform of some sort to reduce law suit abuse. But the point I REALLY try to make to people is this....Private insurance companies need to at least break even to keep themselves in business. Government does not. Government can afford to operate at a loss because it has an endless supply of tax revenue and the ability to borrow money from sales of bonds or by monetizing the debt with the Federal Reserve. Now ask yourself this....if you were a business of some sort, and you were competing against someone who could afford to operate at a loss indefinitely don't you think you would have a hard time competing against them? They could afford to continually undercut you (at their loss) and eventually put you out of business. So as you can see the government is NOT competing against private insurers in a FREE market because 1) they regulate their competitors already and 2) they can afford to lose as much money as they want since they do not need to make a profit or even break even to stay in business. Now some people would say that as long as they can afford to give people cheap medical care then it shouldn't really matter if they operate at a loss....Well ok, but there is one problem with that and that is supply If the government sets prices artificially low then their will be an increase in demand for those services. The system will not be able to handle everybody in a timely manner which will lead to long waits and rationing. Now to be clear there already is rationing today just as their is rationing of every product and service we buy....the rationing factor is the price. There are ways to lower the price using Free market solutions instead of the heavy coercive hand of government such as: Tax deductions for health savings accounts that can be used towards deductibles or insurance premiums, tort reform, allowing private insurance to compete in a free market unlike what it has endured over the years as increased government regulation has increased the price. I'm starting to ramble, but the main point I wanted to put out for debate is that government is NOT competing against private insurers because it is government that is setting the terms of competition and not the market and also the government can afford to operate at a loss while private insurers can't. Talk about a monopoly! Please if all you can say is a bunch of rude or ignorant things then please don't comment. more

Resolved Question: Was the Collins project managed using a "project abandonment" strategy ?

A phony incident may have been created. <<In a recent interview, Campbell Soup CEO Douglas Conant defined his mission in taking the helm eight years ago as “to take a ‘bad’ company and lift its performance to ‘extraordinary’ by 2011." In 2001, Campbell was indeed without clear direction and had no innovation strategy. Conant's strategy was simple enough: developing or keeping only products that ranked first or second in three major categories. It’s a strategy that immediately brings to mind the project abandonment strategy employed by former GE CEO Jack Welch. And it’s the project abandonment strategy Peter Drucker delivered to Welch and GE’s board of directors shortly after Welch took the reins of the then vastly diversified and bloated company. Leading Project Abandonment Practitioners Interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, Conant lists Drucker and Jim Collins as his favorite management thinkers. Most people familiar with the work of these two gentlemen know of their connection through the story of how Collins drove to Drucker’s home in Claremont, California, to seek some career advice. Collins, commenting on Conant’s selling the Godiva chocolate brand in 2008, said “That gets my attention, when someone has the discipline to let go of what doesn’t fit.” The Benefits of Effective Project Abandonment What all of these individuals share is the subtractive mindset and a belief in the power and discipline of a “stop-doing” project abandonment strategy. In the throes of his early post-Stanford Business School career at Hewlett-Packard, Collins’ favorite former professor reproached him for a lack of discipline. An expert in creativity and innovation, she told him his hard-wired energy level was riding over his mental clarity, enabling a busy yet unfocused life. Her words rang true; at the time, Collins was aggressively chasing his carefully-set stretch goals for the year, confident in his ability to accomplish them. Still, his life was crowded with the commotion of a fast-tracking career. Her comment made him pull up short and re-examine what he was doing. To help, she did what great teachers do, constructing a lesson in the form of an assignment she called “20-10”: Imagine that you’ve just inherited $20 million free and clear, but you only have 10 years to live. What would you do differently—and specifically, what would you stop doing? How would you practice project abandonment? Effective Project Abandonment Will Change a Process for the Better The exercise did precisely what it was intended to do—make Collins stop and think about what mattered most to him. It was a turning point. First, he realized he’d been racing down the wrong track, spending enormous energy on the wrong things. In fact, he woke up to the fact that he hated his job. He promptly began his project abandonment strategy by quitting and headed back to Stanford to launch a new career of research, teaching and writing. He would later visit Drucker seeking counsel on the ins and outs of this new direction. Effective Project Abandonment Means Choosing What is Important in the Big Picture The assignment became a constant reminder of just how important and precious his time is. He now starts each year by choosing what not to do; and each of his to-do lists always includes “stop-doing” items. Collins preaches his practice, impressing upon his audiences that they absolutely must have a “stop-doing” project abandonment list to accompany their to-do lists. As a practical matter, he advises developing a strong discipline around first giving careful thought to prioritizing goals and objectives, then eliminating the bottom 20 percent of the list and abandons those projects…forever. Project Abandonment Done Well Leads to Success The strategy helped Collins identify which factors led the companies he was studying to become “great” while others remained merely “good.” The great companies routinely eliminated activities and pursuits that did not significantly contribute to the following criteria: profit, passion and perfection. Profit meant engaging in only the activities that would result in value for both the company and the customer. Passion meant having a sense of noble purpose beyond just making money. And perfection meant focusing on flawlessly executing each task in such a way as to make the competition irrelevant. All three criteria had to be met in order for any activity to remain in these great companies’ repertoires. Jim Collins made the “stop doing” argument in an eloquent 2003 year-end essay appearing in USA Today: “A great piece of art is composed not just of what is in the final piece, but equally what is not. It is the discipline to discard what does not fit—to cut out what might have already cost days or even years of effort—that distinguishes the truly exceptional artist and marks the ideal piece of work, be it a symphony, a novel, a painting, a company, or most important of all, a life.” The subt more

Resolved Question: Why are republicans getting mad at Obama for signing the smoking bill? Does it make you no longer pro-life?

Tobacco use is the nation's number one cause of preventable death in the U.S. The facts are clear. Over 40,000 careful studies have proven that smoking causes disease and death. Every medical and health agency agrees. Each year, more Americans die from smoking-related diseases than from AIDS, drug abuse, car accidents and murder combined. Take a look at the facts about cigarette smoking and your lungs. Cigarette Smoking -- The Facts An estimated 430,000 Americans die each year from the effects of cigarette smoking. * Smoking causes 20% (or 1 in 5) of all deaths in the United States each year. * Cigarette smoking is the major cause of: o emphysema o lung cancer o chronic bronchitis o heart disease and stroke * In 1988, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that nicotine is just as addictive as heroin and cocaine. A "hit" of nicotine reaches the brain in seven seconds, twice as fast as heroin injected into the vein. * In the U.S., about 1.3 million people quit smoking each year, but about 48 million continue to smoke. * It is estimated that 8,200 (19.8%) of the deaths in Washington state in 1997 were attributable to smoking. * The 1998 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) reported that 21.4% of adults in Washington State currently smoke. Tobacco Costs -- The Facts * Cigarettes are the most heavily advertised products in the U.S. * Tobacco companies spend over 4 billion dollars each year on advertising and promotion of their deadly products. * Smoking costs the nation over $100 billion per year in health care costs and lost productivity -- that's about $398 per American each year. * In Washington state $1.3 billion is spent each year on health care costs associated with caring for people with tobacco related illnesses. Women and Smoking -- The Facts * Lung cancer has now surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. * Current female smokers aged 35 and older are more than 10 times as likely to die from emphysema or chronic bronchitis than nonsmoking females. * Americans are starting to smoke at a younger age, especially young girls. * Pregnant smokers have higher rates of miscarriage, stillbirths and babies who are born too soon. More of their babies die soon after birth from crib death than newborns of nonsmoking mothers. * In 1997, nearly 11,000 Washington babies were born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy. * As more women start to smoke, their death rates from smoking-related lung diseases are fast approaching male smoking rates. Men and Smoking -- The Facts * Cigarette smoking is the #1 cause of cancer death in men. * Current male smokers over age 35 are almost 10 times more likely to die of lung disease and 22 times more likely to die from lung cancer than nonsmoking males. Resolved Question: What is a good title for this essay/self expression piece?

I originally had it as "Normality" or maybe "We are the followers" What do you think? -------- I’m a junior in high school trying to just be done with it all, yet I’ve been sending myself around this endless loop of what people call life. “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” they ask, and every time it’s the same thing; I don’t know. I don’t know if I’ll win the lottery or if I’ll be in jail. I find myself wandering around the same halls of the same school. Everything is plain and simple here, and its weird how just the slightest bit of abnormality in a student’s day can be talked about for weeks. Lately I’ve been thinking if the stress of all these things I put up every day is worth it or not. If I’m learning something, I want it to be my choice, my topics, and be for something I want to do. They generalize us, all of us; it’s funny that they think that we will all be doing quadratic equations at our business manager job ten years from now. I woke up at six this morning, no later or earlier than normal. The same routine that I’ve programmed into my head is done without effort, without thought. After the blur of my life that is my morning, I step onto the bus where I see my friends. This place is a sanctuary from normality. It’s the one place in my routine that I know I won’t be told the same story twice. Friends chatting behind me, bus driver interrogating yet another student in front of me, and normality in the rest of the space around me. It’s funny how people believe it’s different, when it’s really the same each day. We arrive at school and I get off the bus. The same girl I’ve admired is walking in front of me. This is the only part of normality in my day that I expect for something to change, a “Hello”, a wave, or even a slightest glimpse into my eyes. As I continue to drift off into my fantasy land, she runs over to my best friend Kyle, who’s also her boyfriend. Even through all my most visible envy, he continues to taunt me, just like every other day. I avoid them and walk into school. It’s funny how I actually put up with this. As I walk into English, I sit down alone because I’m always the first person in the room. There really isn’t that much else to do in this prison. I’ve always liked English for one reason; it’s the one part in my day where I can express my creativity freely. My class is short, simple, and to the point. After that however, my school day flies by but I almost never realize it until it’s over. As most students tend to cope with the regularities of their schedule, I am no different. I never question why, nor do I ever question it at all. I’m a student, just trying to get done with it all. Yet, I think it’s funny, but I am beginning to wonder why. I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately. Sometimes I’ve wondered if they are real or not. It’s because I’m asking myself things I’ve never asked before -- most of them beginning with “why”. Why do I conform to what everyone else is doing when I keep telling myself not to? Am I the only one that realizes there is so much opportunity? Why don’t I live up to the ideas I think of? Maybe it’s because I don’t think of ideas, I create them. My life has always been the same, but why can’t I seem to loose grip of normality? It’s funny, I’ve had thoughts of repetitiveness for so long, but what really is normality? As the end of the year draws to a close, I reflect on the questions that I’ve asked myself all year. Everything is tied together through one factor, growing up. My experience of growing up was based around thought. Thought can lead to magnificence, destruction or even both. In my case, it’s made my life a living hell. School is still school to me, that hasn’t changed. But the way I lived it has. The whole experience of growing up has. But how do you know when you are done growing up, and you start living? Finding a link between growing up and living is difficult to determine in itself. Growing up is following the rules, following the role models, following the path they selected for you. There is no experience of growing up, it’s just following. What do I see as I roam these school halls? I see people who follow the rules; for what? They’re letting fear lead them. Living tends to be the opposite, depending who you are. People make choices, and they don’t look back. Looking back only brings up the past, and how can you steer in the direction of your future, when you are busy looking in the rear view mirror? more

Resolved Question: Is trust very important in safety-critical work ? (And what work isn't safety-critical ?) Or can we just say?

"Admiral X wants the system so we'll deliver the system. We'll run the prerequisite pre-delivery tests if time allows." <<Q: What do you think Adam Smith's advice to business leaders would be concerning corporate ethics given what he writes about trust? A: This is a great question. Smith believed that there were certain virtues, such as trust and a concern for fairness, that were vital for the functioning of a market economy. He wrote about trust and reciprocity as critical foundations of the early beginnings of the market, allowing reciprocal gift exchange to emerge, and leading to trade. One might think that the need for trust and trustworthiness diminishes as a market develops, but if anything the opposite is true. For example, we trust managers to carry out the interests of shareholders: We can build contracts to align manager incentives with those of shareholders, but we are never able to completely contract on all the things we care about and want to enforce. Implicitly, then, we hold a belief that managers have internalized the values we care about, and trust them to act on those, particularly when they might come in conflict with their own interests. There are similarly other professions where individuals are entrusted to serve, like doctors, teachers, auditors, but cannot be monitored fully. We thus rely on these individuals' professionalism and honor (or "enlightened self interest") to carry out their occupations. Across organizations, in the marketplace, factors like brand reputation and warranties help facilitate transactions without requiring complete trust. Within organizations, the issue of trust and trustworthiness—of employees to their bosses, of managers to each other and to shareholders—becomes even more important, and even more difficult to replace by market forces or better incentives and contracts. Thus, Smith's advice to business leaders would likely be that they should weigh carefully the costs of breaking trust and of risking reputation. The costs of sacrificing ethical standards of conduct are much larger than any individual might imagine, precisely because they decrease trust and can strongly affect organizational and market functioning as a whole.>> more

Resolved Question: Could you check my gramatical mistakes?

Could you look through my writing and check my grammatical mistakes. It is a part of my coursework. Thank you so much for your help. "Internal planning factors Those factors relate to what is happening inside the business. It will be planning of the available resources (labour force) and how to develop them within the business to operate successfully. Human resources are all the people who work for a business. Organisational needs Most of businesses constantly developing and changes and all employees must be able to adapt to these changes. Lots of employees don’t like changes. They want to keep doing jobs that they know how to do and understand. They may be moody and unmotivated because they don’t want to face new situations. To avoid this there must be someone who can retrain them and navigate through change well. The demand for products and services has a huge affect on the number of employees needed for that role. Businesses need to make adjustments to their workforce and plan for the future to operate successfully and meet customer expectations. Chester Zoo provides catering facilities for its visitors, such as Victorian Manor House, situated opposite the Lions and next to the Roman Garden or fully licensed bar and beer garden. The demand for catering would vary depending on season and Chester Zoo must make adjustments to their workforce by reducing the workforce or by expanding the workforce. For example, during summer, temperature s higher and demand for drinks will be higher, so Chester Zoo may need additional staff. Some businesses may also decide to expand into different countries and market to target different group of people because opportunities for growth and increase profit in the UK are limited. This expansion may mean that they require different types of employees, for example; someone who can speak foreign languages or someone who want to travel and work abroad. A Lot of people may not be interested in working abroad because they have family and it could be difficult to find adequate person for this vacancy. Technological changes also effect the internal working arrangements. Nowadays customers are frequently using the internet to but products and services. It often leads to staff reductions, because a business don’t need as great numbers of staff in physical stores. It also applies to Chester Zoo because in the nearest future they may allow their visitors to buy tickets trough their website. Form the previous unit I know that a successful business should offer as good level of service and security as the customers could expect on the high street. Chester Zoo may not need as great numbers of employees who work on tills; however they may need additional staff in call centres and special department which will be accountable for payment security." more

Resolved Question: HELP MY ESSAY. IS THIS good enough for touchpoint essay help me PLS?

In this essay, Luevano initiates a theological reflection on the cases of the approximately 250 missing and 500 murdered women of Juarez-Chihuahua, Mexico. The women are victims of femicide, the murder of women by men. Luevano's main purpose is to engage femicide as a theological challenge. After presenting a brief description of the social, political, and economic conditions that have fostered violence against women in Northern Mexico, the author focuses on exploring how the mutilated and dismembered bodies of these women call for an appropriate theological analysis. Finally, the essay concludes with a reflection on the power and the necessity of developing theological and ethical responses to the reality of femicide. ********** In Northern Mexico, increasing numbers of violent events have dramatically affected women's lives. Since 1993, more than 250 women have disappeared and at least 500 women have been killed in the border town of Juarez, Mexico, and surrounding state of Chihuahua. (1) Domestic violence was the cause of approximately two-thirds of these murders. The rest can likely be attributed to targeted violence surrounding narcotics trafficking. Young women between the ages of ten and thirty are kidnapped, tortured, raped, and murdered. In many cases, their bodies are mutilated; in most cases, their remains are dumped in the desert slums on Juarez's outskirts. On occasion, murderers leave victims' bodies in the city's central business district, in what appears to be an arrogant display of perpetrators' immunity from the law. (2) These crimes are commonly referred to as "The Maquiladora Murders," a reference to the women's factory-worker status. I contend that they are part of a wider cycle of violence called "femicide." (3) I base my approach on observations and data gathered during field research in Juarez and El Paso, Texas, where I interviewed people directly affected by murder and others beyond the borderlands who have taken an interest in the situation there. I approach the Juarez-Chihuahua femicides from the standpoint of my own theological sensitivities and concerns. Their deaths call for an appropriate response in which the horror of femicide is opposed and denounced in word and deed. Such a response must analyze and address all conditions that cause or allow these women to be murdered without consequence. Thus in this essay, I focus on our response to the call of these events. Ultimately, I believe the Juarez-Chihuahua femicides are a modern-day summons to conversion for us all. Only bold attention to the stark reality of the Juarez-Chihuahua femicides constitutes an adequate starting point for comprehensive consideration of this evil. Lack of such attention would more likely than not result in failure to see and accept the Juarez-Chihuahua femicides for what they are. Such failure would undermine the prophetic potency of this event and could lead to an idealization or glorification of the historically imposed suffering of these women. A wealth of comprehensive feminist theology rightly argues against such idealization and glorification. I have divided my reflection into three sections. First, I present a brief description of the social, political, and economic conditions that created the environment fostering violence against women in Northern Mexico for more than fourteen years. Second, I focus on exploring how the mutilated and dismembered bodies of these women are part of the Juarez-Chihuahua theological event that calls for an appropriate response. Last, I point out the necessity of developing theological and ethical responses from the theological community to the reality of femicide. A Culture of Violence as the Context of Femicide: The Impact of Globalization Several factors have contributed to support an environment of violence against women and femicide in Northern Mexico. I suggest that these factors are structurally related to the processes of globalization affecting this specific context. Among these factors, my research shows the importance of considering the prevalent governmental corruption, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), las invasiones (the invasions), the drug cartel, and shifts in gender roles. more

Resolved Question: You are a lead manager at Forman Mills. You have just received a shipment of new Phillies World Se?

Management You are a lead manager at Forman Mills. You have just received a shipment of new Phillies World Series memorabilia this morning. You were told the entire product line needs to go on sale tomorrow before the big parade in the city. During the rush following the Phillies victory in the National League Conference Series (NLCS), there were significant quality issues and pilferage. Numerous displays fell over; significant losses resulted from inaccurate inputs at the cash register and losses of inventory mounted. In addition, the staff (consisting of 10 personnel – 7 experienced and 3 new hires) is quite disgruntled from the long hours spent in the store following the NL Conference victories. How will you lead and motivate the staff to work beyond their assigned shifts before the story opens in the morning? How will you manage the situation and minimize the quality problems? Analyze the potential management actions/considerations in managing this situation? Outline the management functions and provide 2 examples of actions/considerations for each function that would need to be performed? Explain why the action is critical to success and explain the associated managerial roles and skills that would be significant in completing the action. Leadership Philly Widgets is a 50-year old family-owned business with 250 employees that produces small widgets for the automotive industry. The president is Mr. Romano, who came to the company from a smaller business with strong credentials in advanced widget technology. Before Mr. Romano, the only president of PW was the founder and owner of the company. The organizational structure of PW was very traditional and supported by a rich organizational culture. As the new president, Mr. Romano sincerely wanted to transform PW. He wanted to prove that new technologies and advanced management techniques could make PW one of the best manufacturing companies in the country. To that end, Mr. Romano created a vision statement that was displayed throughout the company. The two-page statement which had a strong democratic tone, described the overall purposes, directions and values of the company. During the first 3 years of Mr. Romano’s tenure as president, several reorganizations took place. These were designed by Mr. Romano and a select few of his senior managers. The intention of each reorganization was to implement advanced organizational structures to bolster the declared PW vision. Yet the major outcome of each of the changes was to dilute the leadership and create a feeling of instability among employees. Most of the changes were made from the top down. Some changes limited employee input . Some situations required individual workers to report to three different bosses. Employees began to feel uncertain about their responsibilities. As a result, there was a drop in worker morale and production. People at PW complained that although mission statements were displayed , no one understood in which direction they were going. To the employees at PW, Mr. Romano was an enigma. Although PW was an American company, he drove a foreign car. He was arbitrary in how he treated people. He acted in a nondirective style toward some people and showed arbitrary control towards others. He also appeared insensitive to employees concerns. He wanted an environment in which everyone could feel empowered but often failed to listen closely to what employees were saying. He seldom engaged in open, two-way communication. Employees felt that Mr. Romano either misunderstood or did not care about the rich history of PW. Four years after arriving, Mr. Romano stepped down as president after his operations officer ran the company into large debt and a cash-flow crisis. His dream was never realized. Analyze this situation. Identify and explain how at least 3 key factors contributed to this leadership failure, and recommend a leadership approach that should be taken to improve performance. Provide rationale for your recommended approach. more

Resolved Question: Is this a good enough story start for my coursework? Thanks!?

Starting at a new school can be demanding. Yet, for some, ‘fitting in’ and gaining acceptance is a natural given. Mark was definitely not one of those lucky few. He, like many others, felt like an outcast the minute his shoe imprinted the begrimed floors of Clifford Private School: Its dusty, oak floor boards ran along the vaulted corridor, leading to the reception in a long stretch of zigzag patterns that definitely blurred his predetermined vision of a pristine, well-kept private school, full of smart, snobby and rich teenagers. The building was definitely not the unnaturally beautiful establishment that he had expected, yet this factor somehow made it easier for him to feel comfortable. On the other hand, the students’ characters – just as he’d guessed. They all wore the regulated uniform, a black and yellow stripped tie (short ties for girls), and grey trousers for boys, pleated grey skirts for girls and a navy blue blazer with the school’s emblem – a staff sandwiched between two soaring lions woven with golden thread. They all wore every item of clothing that was enforced and they wore it well. From the moment Mark had set eyes on them, he knew that these kids were not going to accept him, being poor and new, into their world. He had frequently heard the phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ from his grandma but decided to dismiss it as he was constantly being judged by others during his 20 minutes of Tuesday standing in one place and staring around his new school. They took one look at Mark’s second-hand uniform and threw him the ‘what – are – you – doing – in – that?’ look. Then suddenly, Mark noticed a group of boys in the corner next to a huge floral arrangement. Their secretive, mysterious stance and the way their ruffled uniforms screamed the powerful statement of ‘beware’ drew him into this particular crowd. ‘Who are they?’ Mark asked in bewilderment. Miss Porter, one of the school’s receptionists, narrowed her large brown eyes and shook her head from side to side in a flurry, making her thin and shiny blonde hair whip her pale and flawless skin. Her rosy red lips pressed into a thin line as she heaved a loud sigh. She glided around from beside Mark, so that they were face to face, and blocked his view from the mesmerizing gang. ‘They are not the bunch you want to be seen hanging around with, Mark, they really aren’t. You have just left a school because of how these kinds of people treated you’, she lowered her voice into a stern whisper as the last few words escaped from her lips. Her deep brown eyes darted across the hall, looking cautiously as the students minded their own business. She moved in closer to Mark, protecting him as a hawk would do to her young. ‘These kinds of people?’ A puzzled look spread over his face. ‘What did she mean by these kinds of people?’ Then it hit him. He suddenly realised the reason why he was in awe of that particular group. Their posture, their unapproachable appearance and their mysterious eyes mirrored that of those back at his old school. It was filled with ‘these kinds of people’. They did not like him or feel the need to extend their benignity and his strong African accent didn’t help either. They found it funny that he struggled to capture the culture of England after moving from Zimbabwe and it was them that bullied him until he was pushed almost to suicide. However, Mark pressed on, his level of maturity was reflected through his choice to press on for his sister and his grandmother (the only two family members left). He endured another two years of the dreary school until he could take no more and took it upon himself to organise a new start, at a fresh, new school. He was shocked that his natural instinct was to be drawn to the only thing that he promised to keep away from, so he decided to take Miss Porter’s advice and avoided that crowd for as long as possible. As long as possible was not very long. Every day he turned up to school and peered around for the gang. At break, lunch and at the end of the day they were loitering in their usual spot near the flower pot, always giggling and excited. Every now and then they would notice Mark, at which point, he would slouch into a loose position and walk awkwardly, bobbing up and down whilst leaning to the side at each step with his left foot, as they did – as if he were wearing cardboard pants. He would then realise what he was doing and shake himself to snap out of his sudden impulse to impress this particular crowd. Although they would just snigger and then get back to whatever they were doing, he always felt the gaze of one particular member and could not help having an impulse to try and make him a friend one day. The canteen queue was extremely long and tedious on Friday. The last day of the school week, in any school, was always a remarkably slow one. It was as if the week was trying to prolong the children’s’ suffering at school. Finally Mark had arrived at the dessert aisle. It... was filled with a variety of tasteful treats. There was ice cream that melted slowly to release a firework of flavours in your mouth. There also was Cheese cake that took you for a ride discovering bursts of smooth cream cheese filling, crumbly biscuit base and sticky caramel lining – just about every sensation that you could ask for. Amongst this, many other mouth watering deserts sat calling out for predators and defying the laws of the food chains. This was one of the advantages to being in a private school. Just as Mark had situated a perfect, clear table (which was rare to find and he couldn’t sit where anyone else was sitting), he noticed that one of the gang members had dispatched from his group. Jumping at the chance, Mark rose up and debated inside whether he should waste such a beautiful masterpiece of a desert. Quickly deciding that what he was about to do was much more important; he reluctantly swept it into the large menacing bin as if departing his best friend. However, he had the slightest inkling that this gang member, the one who he had noticed staring at him, may allow an opening into his gang. The thought of a friend made Mark giddy, let alone becoming a part of a whole gang. ‘Uh hi, my name is Mark’, a ripple of fear swam through his body as the boy turned to face him. He had never seen this boy so close and he was astonished to find that his face was covered in deep, ominous scars. His jaw was the wrong shape in many points and his mouth was constantly pressed to only allow a snarl as a greeting. Suddenly Mark didn’t think this was such a good idea. He was rigid, the fear overwhelmed him.Memories from his past gushed back into his mind and he knew had to get away, but he couldn’t. Not being able to move, Mark looked deep into the boy’s brilliant, blue eyes. Here he found the slightest hint of sadness, it fascinated him. The boy fidgeted and Mark realised that he was making the situation more and more awkward by staring. ‘I just wanted to know who you were, I noticed you looking at me and I thought that finally I could get a....’ he trailed off and his words fell into silence. He looked around, wondering if the whole school was listening to their conversation. They weren’t, the canteen was empty! Mark’s dark eyes widened with a mesh of panic and shock. ‘Yeah and I noticed that you’re late for lessons, mess up in the first week of school, interesting’, he sniggered and strolled off, leaving Mark unnerved and confused.Sorry I did put it in paragraphs but it's hard to see itDon't be afraid to be harsh more

Resolved Question: Do I have a case to sue? Is it too late? Any other options?

I just want to know if I have a case and if it is too late to file. Here is a basic overveiw of the situation. In Febuary of 2006 my husband and I began looking into purchasing a house, we had never bought a house before, so we contacted a real estate agency in our area who showed us a few properties that did not suit our needs, he then directed our attention at this location. After we had done our first walk through he put us in contact with someone he believed could help us get financing, then we were asked to come in and sign some papers, one of those was a dual agency disclosure, he told us it was no big deal, his company did this all the time and he would still be representing us whole heartedly, but that it just meant that his company happend to be listing the house for the sellers. He told us all in all the house was in pretty good shape, and that it was a great price. We never thought there was any reason to question much as it seemed he had it all taken care of and we were getting a great peice of property at a bargain price. It was only after we purchased it in April of 2006 that we realized the faulty well pump switch, the leaky heating fuel tank, the shorted outlets and light fixtures, bad wiring, leaky plumbing, mold in the floors, as well as in the walls and other areas, the house has a major problem with mice and other small rodents, and the downstairs ceiling is literally stained with the urine and defication of the mice that live between the ceiling of the main floor and the floor of the level above, the floors are rotting and unlevel and worst of all the foundation and support beams are caving, cracking, and crunmbling. Hydrolic tractor fluid and other wastes left in an old shed from the previouse owners logging business have stained some of the soil and nothing grows in those areas. We began cleaning up the property and working on the house as soon as we got in, but it is just more than we can manage, we are an extremly low income family, with 4 children at home, 3 of them being special needs. I did contact the realtors office the year after we bought the house and was told that the real estate agent who handled our case no longer works there but that they were sure I had been told everything that they had a legal obligation to disclose and that there was no proof the agency or the seller had had any prior knowledge of the problems with the house. I have confermation that they did, the posts that we thought were mere support posts are actually jacks used to lift and straighten the cross beams and supports of a house. (they are failing) So after realizing this I began looking closer over our documents from the purchase of the house, I came across the appraisal notices and several questionable entries including..1)the area asking if there are any adverse site conditions or external factors such as easments, environmental conditions or land uses is marked NO, but we do not have our own drive way, we have an easment to the highway, and we were not told about the logging business run here or the heavy equipment that had been stored here or chemicals used here untill after the purchase. 2)in the area that states describe the condition of the property (including repairs, deterioration, renovations, remodeling, ect.) it is marked SUBJECT IS IN AVERAGE CONDITION FOR AGE OF HOME, QUALITY OF CONSTRUCTION IS AVERAGE, NO NEEDED REPAIRS OR REMODELING NESSASSRY. 3) in the area that asks are there any physical deficiencies or adverse conditions that affect the livability, soundness, or structural integrity of the of the property it is marked NO. We can barley afford the payments for the seller carry back and the mortgage, let alone the nessesary repairs to keep the home livable, one of a few things is going to happen if we can't find any course of action, either the floor is going to cave in under our feet, we are all going to get sick due to mold, rodent waste, lead paint ect...or we are going to end up in foreclosure with no where to go. There must be something we can do. Please contact me and let me know what you think. Oh I almost forgot to mention, we are located in a rural town in Minnesota. Please do not be judgmental, or rude, I realize that I should have done my homework back then, I wish I had been more knowledgable and less immature and blind, but I wasn't, so please look at the situation for what it is now and give me any ideas on what I can do, now that I am looking more into all of this stuff I am surprised we were ever given a loan for the amount that we were, it wasn't realy ever in our price range. I was even looking into selling to one of those WE BUY OLD HOUSES things just to get out from under it, even considered letting someone take over payments straight up, but then found out that the mortgage would still be under our names so we wouldn't be able to get a loan to get us into anything else, and if we sold it to them for cash since we have no equidy we would still owe the mortgage more

Resolved Question: Are there any business-savvy Pennsylvanians who can help me?

I live in Phoenix, AZ. I am an undergrad at the Arizona State University business school supply chain management program. Target stores is hosting a semester-long project asking us to decide where to build a distribution center in the Northeast. Narrowing down the geography factors as well as lead times, I have settled on building my D.C. in the Scranton/Lackawanna, PA area. It's a very central location to meet the increasing demands of New York City, New Jersey, etc. you know that whole chain of high-density population along the Northeast coast. Now, I need some insight on what Scranton, PA is like in terms of labor and local laws. Is it highly unionized? Are local laws welcoming or hostile to new business like distribution centers? I'm aware of other factors in choosing a distribution center but I am very concerned about the labor climate. Is it dangerous to my D.C. or is it a trade-off that can be coped with? Any other factors I must consider?Links to information would be great bonus for me too. But I'll take your guys' words too and just go from there.Hi Carlisle, those are some very good points I never considered, especially the bit about DC's being very automated and don't need to be heavily staffed. That is true to a very large degree and I think that would make the trade-off of unionization can be coped. The reason why I'm reluctant to locate my D.C. down south is because there is a D.C. already in Martinsburg, WV, which is 64 miles southwest of Carlisle. I could put two DC's next to each other (there are other DC's in pairs across the country), but it would not be as central to meeting the demands of NYC, New Jersey, etc. that whole chain I mentioned. If I was to pair DC's, I would pair with the one in Amsterdam, NY because it's maxing out on capacity. However, NY is highly unionized so I would be worse off there. So I'm probably sticking with Scranton/Lackawanna but if you guys have any idea of a place that is within a radius of 50 miles please share your thoughts. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What are the flaws with Keynesian Economics?

Barack Obama has a Keynesian economic approach to the recession. Keynesian economics is a macroeconomic theory based on the ideas of 20th-century British economist John Maynard Keynes. It emphasizes the role of demand-side factors, as opposed to supply-side factors, in the determination of aggregate output. Keynesian economics argues that private sector decisions sometimes lead to inefficient macroeconomic outcomes, and therefore advocates active policy responses by the public sector, including monetary policy actions by the central bank and fiscal policy actions by the government, to stabilize output over the business cycle. Beginning in the late 1950s New Classical Macroeconomists began to disagree with the methodology employed by Keynes and his successors. Keynesians emphasized the dependence of consumption on disposable income and, also, of investment on current profits and current cash flow. In addition Keynes posited a Phillips curve that tied nominal wage inflation to unemployment rate. To buttress these theories Keynesians typically traced the logical foundations of their model (using introspection) and buttressed their assumptions with statistical evidence.[9] New Classical theorists demanded that Macroeconomic be grounded on the same foundations as Microeconomic theory, profit-maximizing firms and utility maximizing consumers. The result of this shift in methodology produced several important divergences from Keynesian Macro economics 1. Independence of Consumption and current Income (life-cycle permanent income hypothesis) 2. Irrelevance of Current Profits to Investment (Modigliani-Miller theorem) 3. Long run independence of inflation and unemployment (natural rate of unemployment) 4. The inability of monetary policy to stabilize output (rational expectations) 5. Irrelevance of Taxes and Budget Deficits to Consumption (Ricardian Equivalence) So where do you see the flaws with Keynersianism? more

Resolved Question: Do The WWE's Main Superstars Fight Each Other Too Often?

Thinking back over the past few Raw and SmackDown episodes, I began noticing a trend in the WWE which may be affecting the shows and pay per views that they may not have fully considered. The WWE always want to make their weekly shows the best they can, for both the attending crowd and the worldwide audience, but in my opinion they are pitting the big stars against each other far too often. Due to my age I have a somewhat limited wrestling knowledge, but what I have picked up is that the bigger stars did not used to face off on a regular basis. Just over a decade ago, the larger names in the business would wrestle against jobbers or mid-carders unless it was a big event. I think I can strengthen my point using the example of Jeff Hardy, who at the time of his WWE debut was 16, fighting Razor Ramon in 1994. This not only gave an opportunity to an unknown wrestler, but gave Razor exposure without having to pit him against another big name, and building anticipation for these bigger clashes. The WWE just can’t seem to get us excited about some matches anymore, and I think this point is a strongly influencing factor. Just this Friday we saw Jeff Hardy against Edge, which if given proper build up could headline a pay per view event. But as we see this kind of thing so often now, there is no element of adventure left in the WWE’s choice of rivalries. Even when they do get a decent chance at producing a fresh rivalry they can’t seem to get it right, due in part by my opinion to the fact there are so many pay-per-views at the moment. This leads to really short build up to bigger matches that could deserve longer hype and anticipation. Take for example John Cena vs. Batista at SummerSlam, a meeting of wrestlers that according to the WWE had never happened before (I say “according to the WWE” because they seem to have come out with some questionable facts recently). As a match I thought it was pretty good, but for some reason I just didn’t buy the hype. Maybe it was just me, but I felt like they could have taken a little bit more time and handled it better. One other thing that has really begun to bug me is the constant stream of tag team matches involving the feuding stars. Whenever two guys get into a rivalry they always seem to be involved in dubious tag team match ups with guys who don’t seem to have anything better to do, like Cryme Tyme or The Great Khali. This may be good build up for the matches in some peoples’ opinion, and agreeably it is better than the gross amounts of bad mouthing and promo cutting that we seem to be getting lately. But it just takes something special away from that first encounter of the two wrestlers. You don’t, for example, see boxers have a little match before the big fight for this very reason. With the ever decreasing roster sizes as well, the problem will only get worse. I have always been an advocate of keeping as many wrestlers in the business as possible, and this point only adds to the mountain of reasons the WWE need more wrestlers to improve their product. Do you agree that WWE’s big superstars fight amongst each other far too often? more

Resolved Question: With the cost of tuition skyrocketing is it worth going to college?

Just for reference this question is coming from somebody with a BSE, a MSE, will have another MSE at the end of next April and will be attending Med School for his MD. However, after talking to many undergraduate students and hearing that the in-state tuition cost at a public University (University of Michigan) is at $8500/semester (not including housing, books, etc...) I was stunned. This is about double what I was paying when I started school back in 2000. With the economy in the shape it is in, and many parents unable to help their children as much as before, how can the Universities justify continuously raising the rates of tuition? I understand state funding has dropped a percent or two over the decade but does that justify a near doubling of tuition? How about not building 2 new billion dollar biomedical complexes in order to keep tuition at an affordable rate? Seems like every time I turn around a new parking lot for administration and professors are popping up. But let the poor student pay the bill? I mean, this is a PUBLIC University, not a private one. I look at public schools like UCLA which keep IN STATE tuition at an affordable rate but here at Michigan we get a nearly $25,000/year bill to be an undergrad along with our 20% unemployment rate. Obviously for degrees like Engineering, teaching, business and degrees leading to Law, graduate, and Medical degrees are worth it. But if you are going to get a degree in English to be "educated" but have to take out $50 to $70K of debt is it worth it in the end if you end up making as much as you would have just out of High School as a server or in retail? Maybe you make a couple thousand more a year but you have the joy of paying back those loans? Seems like the Universities have been able to successfully plant my generation with the idea that "you NEED a college degree" at all costs. I'm just waiting for 20 years from now to see the backlash of all the students who went through the rigorous amount of work put in for a degree that doesn't pay back the loans needed to obtain it. I'm getting to the point of telling my neighbors back at my parents neighborhood not to send their children to college unless they know they are going into a particular field because it simply isn't worth it. Yes, education is great but at some point money is a factor. And if you can't afford to pay for your child's education due to the tough times, they are better off not taking Uncle Sam's loans to get a degree that they can't use after it is all said and done. I really feel some people are just not built for schooling required for the practical degrees (by practical I mean in today's world with rising tuition/loans and a degree to allow you to pay them back). They are better off just not enduring the debt and just working right out of high school. So much for America educating its' children. Looks more like a scam to me as Universities are ultimately a business and they have done a wonderful job of marketing their message since we were in elementary school. Any opinions?Typical college freshman. Something is long, don't bother reading. And of course you can't put a "price tag" on experience, however may I propose a question? Is mom/dad paying your bill or are you? It's easy to write off the cost when it isn't coming out of your pocket. more

Resolved Question: "HELP" !!! - urgent employment advice needed....?

I've been working as an AM at the same company for 4 years, I was there when the company first started and was a huge factor in helping to build the company to what it is now. As i've been there from the start, I have one of the largest lucrative client bases in the company. We recently were appointed a new Manager, who has begun to restructure the way we work. I have always worked my database well, & have earned a sustained large amount of profit on a monthly basis for the company (£10K+ pcm and and am up on the year by a considerble amount) I have a strong relationship with the majority of my clients, kept the database warm and rejenerate new business from it every month. 2 weeks ago, we were presented with a strict new working protocol with very little flexibilty, and were told that if we didn't stick to certain guidelines and that if leads within the database didn't meet with the new criteria by the end of this month, part of our client base would be re-allocated. In a meeting, I mentioned that even though I was unhappy with the protocol I would re-structure the way I worked, but due to the size of my client base I would need more time. I was told by my boss that he would think about it and he would come back to me....this was 2 weeks ago, and since then I have asked him 3x whether he had made any decisions..to which he keeps putting me off, telling me he'll talk to me tomorrow, and then ignoring me. I have been so stressed out over the situation, I've worked hours overtime trying to get everything converted, missed lunches & I'm loosing weight (which I do when i'm stressed) I'm doing everything I can to ensure that I dont loose clients..but with 4 years worth of work to deal with, and a really busy, demanding working day - without being given more time, the task is an impossibility..what happens if we get to the end of the month and I start loosing clients? (this is likely to have an effect on my income) The company has grown too fast too quickly and it seems that they feel they could generate more business by spreading my clients around. I feel that I am in a vulnerble position and have gone from feeling secure and loving my career, to feeling insecure, and paranoid. I am going to get in touch with my union rep soon - but would be really interested in your thoughts or advice... more

Resolved Question: school thing again......i really need to get ink for my printer.?

Becca RobelBusiness Due Feb,13,09Simon Cowell His first known insult, directed towards his own mother, when he told her, that her hat made her look like a poodle. He was born on October 7th 1959 in Brighton England, Son to Eric Phillip and Julie Cowell, brother too Nicholas Cowell, step brother to Tony and Michael Cowell. Many know him as that mean one on American Idol, who? None other than Simon Cowell. Yes the man who built his fortune on the criticism of others, the producer of the X factor, America’s got Talent and judge of his other show , American Idol. Although it may seem crazy, this man actually worked very hard to get to where he is today. Smarts, Risks and Connections with his Father, made him the man he is today. Due to Drinking and cigarette smoking that started at age 9, Simon was kicked out of a numerous amount of schools leading to him dropping out at age sixteen. Simon began working at a few menial jobs but always had trouble getting along with bosses and co-workers, obviously not a surprise, seeing how he still doesn’t get along with his fellow judges. His Father who was an executive at the recording Giant at EMI music publishing , got him a job in, where else?, his companies mail room. After a year of mail , Simon moved up to a job for Iain Burton, the manager of Chorographer Arlene Phillips, the co- founder of the dance group Hot Gossip, of the record label Fanfare records. In 1989 Cowell’s Fanfare records; parent company, got in to financial difficulties, forcing fanfare into the hands of BMG and Simon back into his parent’s house. He says this tragedy was the best thing that happened to him, teaching him the value of money. He then worked his way up to a position in music publishing he left to form E&S music with his boss at EMI. His Fathers connections in the business eventually got Simon rehired as the assistant to an A&R man. A little later in the year, Simon became an A&R consultant for BMG .when 2001 rolls around, Simon and two other judges star on a British show called Pop Idol, much like today’s American Idol. In 2002 Cowell set up another very successful label, SYCO records which then became a part of other labels such as Columbia Records and Sony BMG music entertainment. This was also the year American Idol premiered, naming Kelly Clarkson season one’s American Idol. In 2003 he releases a book titled, “ I don’t mean to be rude, but” about his early childhood and how he became who he is. That same year after a long search, Cowell found four men perfect for II Divo. Then the X- factor, a show off the syco records premiered in 2004. America’s got talent also began this year. Just two years later Simon became executive producer to American inventor a show seeing who can come up with the next big “it” thing on the market. In 2006 he also agreed to remain a judge on American Idol, earning a hefty check of 40 million annually. In the year 2008 a popular artist from the UK became famous in the US for her hit song bleeding love, yes Simon even signed Leona Lewis. Through out the years of his music career Simon has had many honors given to him. The judge of American Idol was presented with the accolade by theatre impresario sir Andrew Lloyd Webber during the ceremony at Royal Albert Hall. He was also presented with the life time achievement award as well. His show American Idol has been nominated for many Emmys over the years. He has won Teen Choice awards as well as an award for Special recognitions In 2006, Cowell ranked No. 29 on Forbes Magazine's "Celebrity 100 Power List." He was named one of People Magazine's 25 Most Eligible Bachelors in 2004.He was placed No.33 on channel 4’s list of all time worst Britons. He is famous for he quotes such as, "That was terrible, I mean just awful" And "My advice would be if you want to pursue a career in the music business, don't." "Did you really believe you could become the American Idol? Well, then, you're deaf." He often compares contestants to karaoke bar singers. Although he is brutal to many contestants, he might just have a heart of gold. Cowell supports animal rights and has even appeared in a video for PETA, where he reminds people not to keep their animals in the hot car when they are out and about. He has been involved in charities for children as well. He has even invited them backstage to the screenings of the x factor. After the Idol gives Back segment went on air, a close source said Simon gave his paycheck to these children in poverty. In conclusion, Simon Cowell has been a tragedy turned into a success story. He changed his bad luck in high school to a high paying job as a brutally honest judge on many shows. But is this the last we will see from him? He told a British magazine that when his contract with American idol was complete “that was it” he says” by the end of my contract the public will be sick of me.” Bibliography http://tvwatch.people.com/2008/04/08/simon-cowell-donates-pay more

Resolved Question: After twice collapsing the economy, should "supply side" conservatives have the decency to shut up?

We've seen this movie before - the policies Bush and the GOP implemented were IDENTICAL to those of the 1920's GOP, known at the time as "Mellonomics," after long-serving Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon: http://www.ustreas.gov/education/history/secretaries/awmellon.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Mellon#The_Mellon_plan Seeing as how they've destroyed the economy TWICE now, should proponents of such policies have the decency and good sense to re-evaluate their positions, or at the very least, shut up? I mean, it's like watching a business model lead to bankruptcy after bankruptcy, but still some people insist that it's a good plan, and that all of those bankruptcies were attributable to some unrelated external factor, or the ineptitude of the people who ran the now-bankrupt companies before aforesaid business model was implemented.Just ask me, Just because the residential real estate bubble was the first shoe to drop does not mean it was the cause of the current crisis. The bubble inflated from 2001-2008 was global in its scope, and included virtually every asset class - equities, commercial paper, commercial real estate-backed debt, residential real estate-backed debt, commodities; prime and subprime; foreign and domestic.Shawn g, Do tell, what major piece of legislation was passed in the 110th Congress which caused the current crisis? Hmm? I'm no expert - well, actually I am, though that's beside the point - but by every account, the residential and commercial real estate bubble began bursting in the most inflated markets in Q2 2006. By Q4 2006, US, British, and European banks had already begun writing down assets. By the time the new Congress was sworn in, the die had already been cast for some time. So again, please tell me, WHAT EXACTLY WAS PASSED from 01/2007 to 01/2009 that caused the current implosion, in your view?Marmar, Your claim has elements of truth, but is entirely misleading. Long story short, FNM & FRE only became insolvent when the money markets collapsed in 2008 - while you could argue those two should have seen what was coming down the pike, at the time, they were telling the truth about the NGE's financial state. What's more, the idea that those two companies have existed since the 1930's, but have only just now caused a collapse, doesn't really hold any water. Also, do look up "post hoc ergo propter hoc."Marmar (again), It may surprise you, but I don't use talking points. In fact, I rarely (maybe once a month) watch TV news, so I'm not really up on the latest TP's. I have written talking points before, but my thoughts are original and my own. I'm actually an economist, not a lawyer, but good guess. more

Resolved Question: What are your thoughts on what ISC Berkley has to say about political conservatism?

The following has been taken from USC Berkley. Researchers help define what makes a political conservative By Kathleen Maclay, Media Relations | 22 July 2003 (revised 7/25/03) BERKELEY – Politically conservative agendas may range from supporting the Vietnam War to upholding traditional moral and religious values to opposing welfare. But are there consistent underlying motivations? Four researchers who culled through 50 years of research literature about the psychology of conservatism report that at the core of political conservatism is the resistance to change and a tolerance for inequality, and that some of the common psychological factors linked to political conservatism include: Fear and aggression Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity Uncertainty avoidance Need for cognitive closure Terror management "From our perspective, these psychological factors are capable of contributing to the adoption of conservative ideological contents, either independently or in combination," the researchers wrote in an article, "Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition," recently published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin. Assistant Professor Jack Glaser of the University of California, Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy and Visiting Professor Frank Sulloway of UC Berkeley joined lead author, Associate Professor John Jost of Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, and Professor Arie Kruglanski of the University of Maryland at College Park, to analyze the literature on conservatism. The psychologists sought patterns among 88 samples, involving 22,818 participants, taken from journal articles, books and conference papers. The material originating from 12 countries included speeches and interviews given by politicians, opinions and verdicts rendered by judges, as well as experimental, field and survey studies. Ten meta-analytic calculations performed on the material - which included various types of literature and approaches from different countries and groups - yielded consistent, common threads, Glaser said. The avoidance of uncertainty, for example, as well as the striving for certainty, are particularly tied to one key dimension of conservative thought - the resistance to change or hanging onto the status quo, they said. The terror management feature of conservatism can be seen in post-Sept. 11 America, where many people appear to shun and even punish outsiders and those who threaten the status of cherished world views, they wrote. Concerns with fear and threat, likewise, can be linked to a second key dimension of conservatism - an endorsement of inequality, a view reflected in the Indian caste system, South African apartheid and the conservative, segregationist politics of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-South S.C.). Disparate conservatives share a resistance to change and acceptance of inequality, the authors said. Hitler, Mussolini, and former President Ronald Reagan were individuals, but all were right-wing conservatives because they preached a return to an idealized past and condoned inequality in some form. Talk host Rush Limbaugh can be described the same way, the authors commented in a published reply to the article. This research marks the first synthesis of a vast amount of information about conservatism, and the result is an "elegant and unifying explanation" for political conservatism under the rubric of motivated social cognition, said Sulloway. That entails the tendency of people's attitudinal preferences on policy matters to be explained by individual needs based on personality, social interests or existential needs. The researchers' analytical methods allowed them to determine the effects for each class of factors and revealed "more pluralistic and nuanced understanding of the source of conservatism," Sulloway said. While most people resist change, Glaser said, liberals appear to have a higher tolerance for change than conservatives do. As for conservatives' penchant for accepting inequality, he said, one contemporary example is liberals' general endorsement of extending rights and liberties to disadvantaged minorities such as gays and lesbians, compared to conservatives' opposing position. The researchers said that conservative ideologies, like virtually all belief systems, develop in part because they satisfy some psychological needs, but that "does not mean that conservatism is pathological or that conservative beliefs are necessarily false, irrational, or unprincipled." They also stressed that their findings are not judgmental. "In many cases, including mass politics, 'liberal' traits may be liabilities, and being intolerant of ambiguity, high on the need for closure, or low in cognitive complexity might be associated with such generally valued characteristics as personal commitment and unwavering loyalty," the researchers wrote. This intolerance of ambiguityThat is USC at Berkley!!!Sorry, Louis!!!This intolerance of ambiguity can lead people to cling to the familiar, to arrive at premature conclusions, and to impose simplistic cliches and stereotypes, the researchers advised. The latest debate about the possibility that the Bush administration ignored intelligence information that discounted reports of Iraq buying nuclear material from Africa may be linked to the conservative intolerance for ambiguity and or need for closure, said Glaser. "For a variety of psychological reasons, then, right-wing populism may have more consistent appeal than left-wing populism, especially in times of potential crisis and instability," he said. Glaser acknowledged that the team's exclusive assessment of the psychological motivations of political conservatism might be viewed as a partisan exercise. However, he said, there is a host of information available about conservatism, but not about liberalism. The researchers conceded cases of left-wing ideologues, such as Stalin, KhrushchevSay Louis... if you want points, answer the question!!! I apologized for my mistake. more

Resolved Question: Could you check my grammar mistakes?

Hi:) This is the last part of my coursework. Could you look through it and check my language? Thank you for your help :) "Conclusion To conclude It is my goal to start a business and provide products and services in competitive prices comparing to my competitors. I have considered many factors affecting my business such as competition, legal equipments, cost of rent and good visibility of my business. I prepared predicted cash flow forecast for twelve months to compare each month's projected figures against different month’s figures. My cash flow forecast enables me to see my potential incomes, expenditure and control them. It is a good indication how my business will be performing. To make my cash flow reliable I checked all expenses and found an average expenses for a small catering business. I tried to use realistic figures to make my calculations as accurate as it is possible. I believe that it is an opportune time to start a business like Coffee Shop in Market place because this is one of the busiest places in Bolton. There is a wide range of shops which attract many people every day and a new range of shops is being building inside The Market place which means that potential market for my products is growing. I think it is completely possible to start this business with a small investment and produce large returns in the future. My strengths would be that I have ability to lead a team, I am a good communicator and I can budget my money and time. I am a very organised person and this would help me in my business because I need to control my stock and my staff. My weaknesses would be that I do not have much experience in running business because as I mentioned previously I have never run my own business before. I am also concerned about credit crunch in the future. It would have influence on my customers and they would not be able to afford prices or a part of them would decide save money and prepare sandwiches for themselves at home. My operating costs may also increase in the future due to price chances and it would be affecting my selling prices. Personally I believe if all of these key information stated in my report will be applied and considered, my business will be as successful. I am very pleased with my investigation and I am sure that these information enable me to open a successful business and generate a profit. If a business consultant confirm that this plan is reasonable I am ready to take risk and start-up this business." more
