Fremont, Neb. councilman: Vote couldn't wait

The city needs to put pressure on federal officials and the Nebraska congressional delegation to help move the issue off center, Edwards said.During testimony before the vote Tuesday, resident Sylvia Sanchez asked the council to proceed in a way that would not divide the community, spark hatred and destroy families."I'm here to ask you all to look into your hearts and ask yourself if this is truly the right thing to do," she said.Supporters, meanwhile expressed their frustration over lax enforcement by federal officials. more
Confidence plunges to 11-year low
The survey results represent the lowest business confidence figures for Victoria since the survey began in 1997, and the lowest business confidence figures for Australia and the lowest (actual) general business conditions figures since the GST was introduced (March quarter 2001 survey).
The collapse in business confidence is showing at state and national levels.
Apart from the knock to confidence among the 500 small, medium and large businesses surveyed, actual trading conditions in the June quarter were weaker. Profits fell despite selling prices increasing, with widespread wage increases squeezing margins. Only 8% of respondents were optimistic about the economy in the next year. While that was down slightly from 9% in the March 2008 quarter, it was dramatically weaker than the June 2007 quarter, when 32% were anticipating stronger growth. more

"We started with nothing and now we'll have a new marina in Delcambre."According to it's brochure, the DWDP is divided into three stages or proposals:- Purchasing available properties, either damaged, abandoned or Federal Emergency Management Agency buyouts and develop them using surgical design decisions.- Adapt and reuse existing commercial facilities and strategically placing commercial development to bring back economic and residential development and a new gateway to mark the entrance of town.- And to introduce a new "safe harbor" marina to encourage growth.Delcambre Alderman Scott Saunier, who also spoke at the Kiwanis event, serves on the steering committee for the DWDP. more
Business Day to pay costs of NIA action
Business Day has been ordered to pay the costs of a National Intelligence Agency (NIA) application to block publication of a sensitive document, Intelligence Services Minister Ronnie Kasrils said on Tuesday. He said in a statement the Johannesburg High Court ordered Business Day not to publicise the document or any part of it. It also ordered that no other person was entitled to possession of the document or to publicise its contents without the NIA's authority and permission. Welcoming the finding, Kasrils said that although it was important for the public to have access to state information and the right to media freedom, there were clear constitutional and legal requirements concerning classified state information. "The intention of Business Day to publish classified information is highly unacceptable and unheard of in democracies anywhere in the world," he said. more
