ExxonMobil says marketing on for PNG LNG project

"Discussions with buyers began this month," Jeff Appleton, vice president of marketing for the PNG LNG project told an oil and gas conference in Darwin. He did not give further details.

Buyers who have expressed interest in Exxon's PNG LNG project include India's Petronet LNG (PLNG.BO: Quote, Profile, Research), which said early this year that it was looking to buy gas from the 6.3 million tonnes a year project.

ExxonMobil is leading the marketing efforts on behalf of venture partners, which include Oil Search Ltd (OSH.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) and Santos Ltd (STO.AX: Quote, Profile, Research).

Oil Search Executive General Manager Phil Bainbridge told the conference that the $11 billion project was on track for a final investment decision in late 2009, with first LNG production scheduled between 2013-2014. more

Customers help boutique business celebrate first year

For the owners of the fashionable clothing and gift store in downtown Estacada, the first year in business has proven to be a defining experience that reshaped their initial vision for the store.

"We totally changed our store based on what customers have told us," Steve Steele said, who runs Pasha Boutique with Heidi and two part-time employees. "We weren't sure what would work best when we first opened. We were kind of targeting the teen clientele, but that's changed to a little bit older market now. … It's been awesome, and we feel very fortunate to have survived the first year."

Inside the trendy downtown shop, weekend customers browsed the selection of Levi's Silver denim jeans, designer tops, children's clothing and jewelry, along with other items such as candles, soaps and lotions. more

Guide to the UK's business organisations

Joining a business organisation can bring benefits to your company. As well as services such as legal helplines, insurance and networking events, many groups fight the cause of entrepreneurs in the corridors of power. But with several organisations available, how can you decide which one is for you? This guide outlines your options.

Federation of Small Businesses (FSB)

With 210,000 members, the FSB is the largest group representing small and medium sized businesses in the UK. Founded in 1974 with its headquarters in Blackpool, the group has 33 regional offices.

On joining the body, members have access to a 24-hour legal helpline for advice on issues including employment law, taxation, health and safety and criminal prosecution. The helpline receives around 100,000 calls a year. more

BA subsidiary OpenSkies to go all-business

OpenSkies currently features 28 seats in premium economy, 24 in business class and five rows of seats in economy class. The economy class section will now make way for 12 additional seats in premium economy (PREM+).

"Since our launch, we have had a tremendously positive reception to our PREM+ service," said Dale Moss, Managing Director of OpenSkies.

This seating configuration will also be used on the carrier’s second service, between Amsterdam and New York, which launches on October 15.

The decision follows BA’s announcement earlier this year that it plans to launch a business class-only service between London City Airport and New York.

The service will offer 32 fully-reclining seats, although a re-fuelling stop will be necessary in Shannon, due to restrictions on the size of the planes able to use the runway at London City. more

Most chemist laboratories in need of major repairs, says government

The director of Finance and Planning in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing, Januarus Mrema, told journalists in Mwanza last week that two of the up to standard labs are owned by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).

Mrema said the government, in collaboration with the Danish International Aid Agency (DANIDA), is working out strategies to carry out major repairs to 18 labs so that they attain the required standards.

``The certificate of approval is not issued unless the labs are equipped with all necessary facilities and professionals to carry out standard services,`` Mrema explained.

He said the aim is to have labs capable of certifying the standard of products to meet international requirements and help increase the values of the same. more

Open Question: How do I build a Social Networking site?

Once I have an idea for a Social Networking site, how do I grow the site so that it's as big as Facebook. I am mainly unfamiliar with the business aspects of things. Ie. Did investors hear about Facebook and contact them to invest, or did the owners of Facebook seek out investors? What about the ads on Facebook? Did the creator of FB contact different companies to offer the opportunity to advertise of Facebook? Or, did companies seek out Facebook? How did they negotiate the cost to advertise? What are the different licenses needed? And did the creators of FB patent or copyright their idea or business plan to keep others from stealing it? Please provide any addtl info that you may have. Once FB became incorporated, I assume they had to get a business license to set up an office? Did the creators have to hire a whole team to run the companies (everything from a receptionist to programmers, accountants, legal staff) or were these roles outsourced? What are the pros and cons of hiring or partnering with a programmer to design and manage your site versus using a site builder? How about insurance? What type is needed? Also, legal issues, such as someone wanting to sue for some odd reason. How about the worry of hackers, and etc. Please provide any addtl info that you may have. Please don't bother answering if you don't have valuable input and real answers. more

Open Question: How to open a business in Columbia, SC? I am completely serious.?

I heard that the area i am at does not have a roller rink, this means in-line skaters don't have a place to skate. Does anyone in Yahoo answers that lives in the Columbia, SC area think that there is a market for a roller skate rink that would include a small concession stand with eating area, arcade with pool tables, various console games, WiFi for laptops, Some computer consoles to play World of War-craft and other online games for a small hourly or daily fee. Additionally maybe I can include an area for BMX stunt bikers, and skate boarders as well that would be separate from the in-line skaters/roller skaters area. I was thinking of sole proprietor, or perhaps going as an LLC. because I doubt I would get enough business to expand into needing a switch to being Incorporated. I would probably pursue being Incorporated unless I was or am going to open at least 4 locations to do this stuff. I want to start with 1 location and if support is there expand as demand dictates. I would be looking to start this venture in Mid-to-late-April 2010 so about the middle of next month when tax season is finishing up. On the Internet computer consoles I would also have printing/faxing services available for a predetermined fee.I know I am in for a "hard" sell but if the locals want it they will support my business enough to make sure stuff will happen. more

Resolved Question: Why University of Illinois (champaign Urbana)? Also, How personal is their admissions process?

Okay, so I am currently a junior in high school and I am researching universities and looking into the best schools, financially and by the quality of the education. I am originally from Illinois but I have been going to high school overseas in Milan, Italy since I was a freshman. It has been a great experience but I'm not quite sure if I will fit into the U of I community because of my diverse background and experiences. Although, I would love if it were possible. My mom recieved both her graduate and undergraduate degrees from U of I (champaign urbana) so she has been pushing me to apply there. Although she has told me once or twice that it is difficult to get in, and she's not sure I am able to. Honestly it was a bit of a blow to my ego but I would like to know what my chances are, and whether the admissions process will take into account the many extracurricular and other personal activities I have dedicated myself to. Below is a taste of my personal achievements during HS: I am currently taking the International Bacchleareaute (haha that is spelled wrong fyi) or the IB. This is like AP and is an accelerated program. I am taking HL math, HL English, and HL Chemistry although I do not plan to go into a Chemistry-related major. Since my freshman year, my semester grades have included all A+s and As except for this past semester I recieved 2 Bs. Our school does not include B+s or A-s because the IB does not grade this way. I received two Bs in Chemistry and Spanish. My courses include Economics, HL Math, Business Studies, HL English, HL Chemistry, Spanish and Italian. I am interested in entering the Business field or possibly communications although I have not quite decided. To continue this already pretty long description, I am in numerous extracurriculor activities and really dedicate myself to all. I have been in student government as Publicity official for my sophmore year and junior year, plus I am running for President this spring for my senior year. I am a member of NHS (national honors society) and have planned many charity events in conjunction. I am also treasurer of Prom Comitteee, and also do MANY sports. I was basketball captain my sophmore and junior year, and volleyball captain my junior year. I also play soccer. This takes alot of my time and I really enjoy particpating in everything. I won the most outstanding english award for 10th grade and most improved in physics last year as well. I am hoping to recieve both English and Economics this year and I am currently particpating in an international marketing competition with the well known company Media-Saturn. Overall, I just want to know if U of I will take into account many of these parts of my life that I have worked so hard to incorporate. I am almost positive I have left many things out as well. I do habitat for humanities and am going to travel to Romania in May as well as I have done a personal fundraiser for St. Judes. I know U of I has a great club diversity but I also just want the best school that will help me succeed. ~Thanks* Oh and I also do MUN (Model United Nations) and go to a conference in Dublin, Ireland everyyear...... more

Resolved Question: Do you use EC with your baby and how early did you start potty training?

I am re-posting this question as I obviously asked it after everyone was in bed! I have 8mo twins and have been quite interested in the theory behind EC and early potty training. We use cloth nappies and although I don't actually use EC I have been using a potty with the girls for about 6-8 weeks now and have been trying to incorporate some cues into their potty time, although this is hard as I usually can't tell if they're doing a pee, although it is of course easier to tell what they're up to if they're grunting away... that said I always make a big song and dance when taking them off the potty, assuming they've done a bit of business and they certainly seem to respond. I am loving the fact that when we're at home I only tend to change one dirty nappy/diaper between them every other day, and that after sleeps we are having more and more dry nappies (three today between them!), but I am wondering how to better this? Our routine is usually breastfeed, potty, play, solids, potty, play, sleep but even if they successfully use the potty after a breastfeed and then have some nappy off time, before the solid meal I put them in a dry nappy but by the time we've got through the meal then back on the potty, the nappy is invariably wet. Is this just something they will get better at with time? Also how do you deal with potty training or EC in general when you are out and about? Additional Details added in response to the answer I did get yesterday suggesting that "they are physically incapable of potty training." Actually I am not trying to completely potty train them, I am trying to understand their cues and respond to them. It is a fact that diaper companies are behind the late potty training of today's children in the western world, and if you do any research you will see that it is only normal for kids not to be completely potty trained by 18months to two years in countries such as ours with access to disposables. It is also a fact that babies as young as 3 months old are capable of using the right muscles to control their eliminations. One less wet nappy per baby per day is 730 less in a year or 40 loads of washing. I'm ok with that. Sources? Here are a few: Wikipedia "The disposable diaper industry has been accusedof encouraging [late training] by manufacturing diapers in increasingly larger sizes" http://tinyurl/yb8893h "The average age at which kids in western society are potty trained today has been delayed by well over 1 year! The disposable companies know this but it is in their interests to have your toddler in diapers for as long as possible." http://tinyurl/yerd6tv "In 1961 disposables flooded the marketplace and consequently parents delayed training, as parents & doctors went along with the advice of the advertisers that children were not yet "ready" to be trained until much later, despite centuries of experience that showed otherwise." So let's see who has the last laugh; while my kids are nappy free before age two, yours will still be marinating in their own waste until they're ready. Good luck with that more

Resolved Question: So how does a McDonalds or a Lawn Mower Shop or similar small business offer health care to its employees?

Think about it before you answer... read my ideas and tell me yours.... Think about all the individuals who are struggling now days .The single mothers who are now raising kids alone and working hard long hours to make 1800 to 2200 dollars before taxes... how do they pay the average for good health insurance... 900 to 1400 per month for a family of 4... If your a Republican and against single payer then figure it out... how does America compete against societies around the planet that have insurance for every man woman and child and still be competitive. Tort reform isn't going to get it... thats 54 Billion over TEN YEARS. Divide 54 Billion by the population of the US 303,824,640 (2008 census) = $177.73 divided by 12 months = $14.41 per person. I keep looking for real Republican ideas that are going to make a real dent and seem to hear more about protecting company profits than real reform. Take Competitiveness across state lines. Competitiveness across State lines takes place in many states now and the costs in those states is still high so expanding markets in states where it is limited is not going to bring down the costs... that's just a ploy by companies for more access to make more money... Isn't it absurd that these companies are making 34 % profit on our pain. Take the case of my grand son... He slips on the tile floor and 7 stitches and 1 X-ray later they owe $3800.00. imagine you have no insurance. The arguments against single payer are illogical for those that have no insurance at all because the care doesn't change... it is still 7 stitches and an X-ray, it's just how it is paid for. So tell me how the Republican plan is going to benefit the small business owner and those without insurance or are struggling to pay the premiums. I really want to hear your ideas and I'm all for incorporating them into the debate... but divide it up by the population and take a look at how much of an effedt it will have. more

Resolved Question: Working thesis + 3 main arguments for Internet Censorship in China? Would this work?

I have a World Issues culminating (huge project given worth anywhere between 15 and 30% of your final mark). It's an essay about one of the issues in the world. My topic would be "China's Human Rights Record"; more specifically, China's Internet Censorship. This project is not to justify internet censorship; it is your own opinion with information to back it up. Obviously, I am against China's internet censorship and am incorporating my opinion into my essay. Previously I had asked for help in creating a thesis and three main arguments, but I think I've got it figured out and I'd really like other opinions to help me out and to make sure that I'm actually doing this right. It's actually really not in proper format because it's all jumbled up in my brain and it meshes together when on paper. Which is what I need help with - any chance y'all can turn my mess of thoughts into a proper, well-written thesis & arguments? It would be VERY helpful to me. Working thesis (well, a description of what I want as a thesis, really): When the government controls everything, including media, it hurts human rights the most. Aside from being an infringement on human rights, China's internet censorship issue hurts businesses as well. Because governments won't let businesses practice the way they'd like, it hurts businesses just as well as it hurts human rights. With this censorship act in place, China doesn't allow its own educated, knowledgeable people decide what is and isn't appropriate for them. Basically, the government has no rights in making decisions for its people by deciding what is and isn't right for them. Who is the government for making these kinds of decisions? ^ Those are my thoughts on China's internet censorship. Can ANYONE please put that into a more appropriate and well-written thesis for me? I'm desperate and I'd really appreciate your help! And now, onto the three main arguments. Argument one: It's an infringement on human rights. It doesn't allow people to make their own decisions. Argument two: It hurts businesses because they have to spend so much time and money trying to change their company to comply with China's censorship laws. For example, Google and Yahoo! Argument three: Recently with all these problems they've had, there's been so much corruption involved in trying to do the things that the governments want that companies take shortcuts, the "easy way out." For example, the baby milk that had poison in it, and the kids' toys that contained a high concentration of lead, etc. Any way y'all can make that look... well, basically smarter? My mind's blank and I can't think of how to word it properly or make it well-written. PLEASE & THANK YOU! more

Resolved Question: How can I subliminally incorporate SEX into my new job resume? It has to work on both males and females?

I am 19 and in college and trying to get a job. It is difficult even though I am bilingual, have studied abroad, have a high gpa, and volunteered nearly 300 hours so I decided to take things to the next level by incorporating tons of trigger words and subliminal messages into a new resume which will make the person reading them feel pleasure/joy/like I am the one to hire XD I was thinking of incorporating sex into it, but not sure how to go about it since the person reading my resume might be male or female :/ And remember this is SUBLIMINAL, so it's not trashy -- just appealing to their inner desires. How can I incorporate sex in a way that will appeal to both a man and a woman? Thanks and ps: I'm a Business, Marketing/Advertising Major/Minor so this is my hobby anyways. XD more

Resolved Question: low GPA coming out of college how will I be able to find a job?

I will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing and my cumulative GPA is a 2.35. I am really scared that when I graduate I won't be able to find a job because my GPA is so low. I got B+'s in my marketing classes that incorporated real life application into the class but I did terrible in my accounting classes where I had to memorize formulas for tests and then try to figure out what formula I had to use and what information was important and what information was just thrown in to mess with our heads. Do you think even with such a low GPA I can land an entry level job. And do you think if I do well and gain experience that I could move up in my marketing career despite my low GPA. more

Resolved Question: Unis: Indiana Bloomington vs. Marquette?

I got accepted to both but I'm a little confused about where to go. I'm leaning towards Indiana Bloomington because of its high ranking Kelley School of Business and it's very picturisque campus. One con though is that it's known as a party school. What I like about Marquette is that it's smaller and it's very religious and I like how they somehow they incorporate that to their education. But I don't like how they are located in a rough neighborhood. If you had to pick, which one would you choose? more

Resolved Question: How can i get started buying used cars at auto auction?

Resolved Question: questions about forming an LLC in Delaware while I live in NY?

I live in NY state and I'm looking to start a business selling items online. I may also wish to sell some items locally. I'm interested in incorporating in Delaware (my goal is to save money in taxes and fees). Would that work for me since i plan on operating in NY? Would it be better just to incorporate in my home state? Also if I incorporate in Delaware would I need to get a Delaware resale license? or could i get a NY resale license? (I need the resale license in order to purchase items from manufacturers and distributors). Also would my legal address need to be a delaware address? if so how do I go about doing that? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Online Design Business Ideas?

I am currently a high school student looking into a career in Graphic Design. My mom mentioned creating an online business to help raise money for school - something I can do on the side and continue doing throughout college - while also improving my skills. I think this would be neat, however, I am stuck when it comes to ideas. I have a passion for marketing and advertising, but I also enjoy creating simple things people can use every day. Is there a way to incorporate both into a successful business? Any ideas to get this started? And finally, If and when I do make that business, how do I spread the word? Thanks for all the help! Resolved Question: How to write a personal statement to explain a change in course subject?

I'm looking to study a business and law course in 2010 after a year of studying a media production course, and was wondering how I could phrase this in my personal statement. I'll be starting in the first year of this new area, and will hopefully be getting a Certificate in HE for my previous course. I was wondering how I could incorporate this in my personal statement, and how I could outline the change in subject area. If anyone has any tips on how to do this, I will be pleased to hear them. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Money and debt forgiveness agreements found after divorce but no money to take back to court.?

Money and debt forgiveness agreements found after divorce but no money to take back to court.? I was in an abusive marriage for 30 years, finally filing for divorce after therapy and leaving 3 times. We owned a biz together which was incorporated. Convincing me to return the third time only for worse abuse. Was so bad at work I was unable to go there even after an agreement was signed he was to stay away from my office. He 2nd mortgaged our home for a business in another town and a loan of 2M in his name. After 10 months of daily abuse I could take no more and agreed to what seemed fair. I gave him 30 properties we owned, most free and clear and took the business, I took the 2nd mortgage liability of 350,000 , the first of $680,000 and the 2 mortgages on the business he had forced me to sign under false pretences. He assumed the rest which included the 2M liability. Two days later he signed a short sale which forgave him the entire debt and also gave him a judgment of $275,000 which he (we) had invested in it using the mortgage money I am repaying. Our corp. and personal attorney was involved in it and this was never disclosed. He had taken the past 2 months income from the business, putting it in a personal account and ordered to return it in 24 hrs. He returned $738.00 and a typed paper showing the rest spent on business expenses, which in reality had already been paid from the business account prior. I have found so many places he was stealing and hiding money and others I can't quite figure out how he did it. He was ordered to bring all bills current and brought none. There were countless violations he removed paperwork and didn't fix which he called into the agencies after I took over. He even took the sales tax and payroll tax money and left nothing for the weeks payroll that I had to make, had extended all utility bills and paid no other bills but what was necessary to stay open. He had stopped making my mortgage payments and my home is under possible foreclosure. He has hundreds of thousands stashed somewhere and I can't buy groceries. I figure he had been planning this for 2 years but my attorney believes longer. He is currently opening up a business which will be in competition with mine just to put me out of business. He had installed an eavesdropping and keylogging remote system at work and in my home and had monitored everything during the divorce, even printing and distributing some of my emails. He sold at least $50,000 of equipment from the business he got the loan on and lied about it. He is still on the mortgage of the business and should I fail he can walk in, pay it and take over, leaving me with nothing. My house will be foreclosed on and I truly will have absolutely nothing after 30 years of work and he will have it all. I know much of what he has done is illegal but no agency seems to want to help and I'm out of money for legal fees, not to mention energy. He spread rumors that I was the one stealing the money from the business, even to the bank, all the employees and people and friends we dealt with. My credit score is ruined due to his not paying the mortgage so I have no where to turn for financial help. I was already in therapy for the abuse being diagnosed as chronically depressed and having post traumatic syndrome from it. Using the fact I saw a therapist he also tells everyone I am mentally unstable and take drugs (antidepressants). I no longer have the money to continue the therapy I need now more than ever. I don't know what to do or where to turn. Are there any agencies that help people in this type of situation? To find even half the money I need a more qualified person than me and going over all the papers, seeing even part of what he did continues to depress me. The worst is not having enough money to even breath and worrying about losing everything if I don't keep going. Are there forensic accountants that work on contingency? Any agencies that can help me with my legal fees until it gets to court? I understand, as he is in contempt he will be responsible but my attorney wants the money as he goes. I complied with all the mediation agreements but as he did not when it finally came to me signing the property deeds over to him, I refused so now I suppose I am also in com tempt but he was to sign the stock in the co. at the same time but my lawyer received docs from his saying he would do so after I had signed the property deeds. All the stock cert. have disappeared as well as inherited stock I had and other files with bogus receipts and other proof of some of what he had done from my home after my alarm system was shut off by someone knowing my information and claiming to be me. It seems I am attacked still on a daily basis and just want it all over but am not going to give him everything, although he may end up with it if I can't find some help. The therapist I saw, who also counseled him , says he is a pathological narcassist, who will not be satisfied until he completel more

Resolved Question: Should I have my side jobs write my checks to my business or to me personally how will this effect my taxes?

I recently incorporated my sole proprietorship due to chances of getting sued working in the legal field. I also have a couple other small side jobs, one coaching and the other working small marketing projects for my friend. I am going to start getting my checks paid to me for my legal job under my business name which means I need to open a business checking account. Should I have my other jobs write my checks out to the business even though they are in a different field of work, can I do that and will it hinder me when it comes to tax time? PS I make under $25,000 a year and I work all these little part time jobs so that I can stay at home with my son, he just turned one this month:) more

Voting Question: How should I do my banking if I'm incorporated plus I have side jobs and make very little money yearly?

I recently incorporated from a sole proprietorship in which I do legal research. I also work a small job coaching gymnastics on the side. I make under $25,000 a year. I have to get a business checking account to continue doing the legal research, since I am now incorporated my client won't write a personal check. I contacted the bank and they told me that I cannot make transfers from business to personal, I do not make enough money to have two separate checking accounts plus I invoice weekly. I sometimes only have a couple hundred dollars in my personal account. I'm a stay at home mom and I need these jobs to allow me to be with my son. How would you do your banking. Should I open a personal account and business and hope I don't get any bounced checks, or can I do all my personal and business checking under my business account? more

Resolved Question: What would you do if your boss gave you more money on your paycheck than what you should have gotten?

Just got my paycheck and after EXTENSIVELY calculating the hours I worked versus how much I got, I concluded that I actually got about $70 more than I should've gotten. This isn't a big corporate place, it's more of a family owned business (I'm just a regular employee though). I do a lot of advanced algebra and calculus at school, so I'm 99% sure my math is correct. Even if it isn't, I shouldn't have gotten this much extra. It could be because: - my boss was in a rush while he was writing paychecks to his employees (he wrote them this morning) - a late Thanksgiving bonus (but my coworker didn't get extra money?) - I worked overtime one hour one day (but my boss isn't the type to pay extra time and a half, lol) I incorporated taxes and everything, too. He deducted all the right amount of taxes and whatnot. I want to tell my boss but I don't want to look stupid, plus my coworkers might call me an idiot if I do point out the mistake, haha. Plus, the extra money doesn't hurt. What would you do? Should I point out the error? Would I be in trouble or something if my boss catches the mistake? How would this affect my income tax refund at the next season? more

Resolved Question: Question for IRS: what is the best way to ask the IRS to reduce/eliminate interest on taxes owed?

My husband and I own a small business. Long story short, we were notified in July that the business had missed two tax payments the year before, and now owed $10,000 in taxes ($7,000 in taxes, $3,000 in interest). We have agreed to pay it by the end of the year, and acknowledge it was our mistake (my husband and I separated for a couple months which resulted in him taking over business finances, and things got sloppy for a little bit). However, we are having to pull all our resources to make this payment. Does anyone know how we can either reduce or eliminate the interest portion of the taxes?? Again, we were notified nearly a year after we had missed the payments, so we would have paid much much sooner if we had known. Instead we were handed two missed payments and a years worth of interest. We moved in that time, and also incorporated the business at the beginning of the year, which may have prolonged receiving the notice. Any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How do I pay myself in a non-profit organization?

I formed a non-profit (very ligit incorporated/ filed with the state) over 2 years ago. It's a helps ministry designed to help people in the community. I have a kids division in which we do volunteer work a couple times a month. Well, i want to wean myself from my day job and go full time into the ministry by doing counseling in my house. Im the soul owner/ opporator, etc... So, how do i pay myself for each counseling appointment without getting into needing to pay into unemployment and all the tax stuff that business employers have to pay when they have employees. I dont want to do anything illegal or questionable. So what can i do to be legal yet avoid all the paperwork of a normal business?OH, dont get me wrong, I claim every dollar i make on my taxes and know i'll have to pay "self employment taxes" and stuff like that. What im saying is, do i have to do payroll and all that other stuff, or can i just write out a check to myself from my non-profit account, then claim it on my personal taxes.Ann: what's UI mean? so u think i could just do counseling as myself, not under the non-profit? hmm... that might work. see, the non-profit doesnt make enough money to higher a secretary or accountant to figure all this stuff out. and im not that smart when it comes to that sort of thing. it's not that im trying to get away with anything, im just trying to keep it as simple as possible, therefore the only thing that keeps me up at nite is how to give people sound advice! thanks everyone for your input. more

Resolved Question: is this a good rebuttle?...if someone denies the estimate I give to them to clean their home?

Hey again, We do understand that when searching for a house cleaner that cost IS certainly a major factor, but we feel quality and dependability are just as important. You may be assured with White glove cleaning absolutley everything is incorporated into the flat rate price we give to you. If you ever need any extra tasks completed that you just cant get around to like the inside of your fridge and stove, inside of your cupboards, your back deck, the walls washed etc you never have to worry about the price getting any higher because it wont! Whereas other cleaning companies charge for extra tasks. We have been in the house celaning business for quite sometime now, and have come to the realization through research that you really do get what you pay for. If in the future our price does work for you, do not hesitate to contact us back and we will gladly come clean for you. If by any chance you would like to give us a shot and see if you are satisfied, One time cleans are ALWAYS accepted. We also have a refer a friend promotion right now. If you can refer a friend to us,you get %50 off your first/next cleaning. A few things to keep in mind anyways. All the best how could I fix it? what should i add or remopve? more

Resolved Question: How to incorporate business partner?

I have been working on starting up a business and I am now reaching a point where I could use a partner, both in terms of funding and complementary skills. I have approached a colleague about this and he is interested. I am interested in finding out how people usually arrange this partnership/ownership. At this point the business has not even been incorporated yet and I prefer to maintain most of the ownership. I know that at some point we probably need a lawyer, but would like ot get some ideas here first. more

Resolved Question: Family Travel Fund/Account. Anyone have one?

As Christmas gets closer- the unsettling reality is we will not afford to go visit our family in the states. We (our 3yr old, husband & self) live abroad to run the small family owned business. Going on yr # 3 now, in Central America that is, and we have established a tradition that is to visit our Texas family @ summer & Christmas time. There is absolutely nothing Christmas about where we live, nor any family oriented things to do besides kick a ball within our confined resided area we call home.-(which is Honduras- so you can get the idea). So,.. at this day and age, I do not have any shame in saying- contribute to Our Christmas Fam. Fund- so that we may (fingers crossed) be able to visit you. -(That,.. to be directed to our family back home). SO, ? is,.. how do we do this? What about starting a Fam. Blog- and maybe incorporating an account of some sort to it rather than saying- oh just write a check and dep. in our bank account. At least this way, it's kind of like giving back to them, with current fam. updates and photos, etc??? Let's not beat around the bush- we do not have 6k laying around the house-and that does not include gifts, a bite to eat or outings-that's just flight, hotel & car rental. So,... ideas anyone? more

Resolved Question: I would like to have some opinion on Succession Planning.?

Imagine how challenging it will be for companies to retain great employees as the economy turns and the business environment continues to go global. Can companies retain great employees by providing them with a documented succession plan? Does succession planning matter to you? I'll be posting a link to a video entitled "Shift Happens" today as well. If you get a chance to review it, incorporate what you see with your thoughts on succession planning, and feel free to share your perspective with the class. My question for you to consider is: Will you commit to an organization who shows a commitment to you, or are there always individual needs that would trump anything a company might offer (money, geographic preference, etc.)? more

Resolved Question: Is using a microwave to cook food safe? Does it change the molecules to inedible substances?

My friend, who has very little biology classes if any, keeps harping that there's a study (somewhere, that she can't list and won't track down) that microwave cooking changes the molecules of food, and makes it indigestible or unsafe. And that the study's test-animals became malnourished and/or died. Can anybody list an official scientific study where this is true? I need an official study with control groups, not personal opinions, by real scientists. She keeps repeating this mysterious study, and getting more and more people to stop microwaving food. It's not like she's eating any healthier, mainly stove-heating up canned chili, oven-baking frozen dinners in the plastic container. She eats out constantly, YET doesn't seem to notice how much of the restaurant food is being heated right in front of her with a microwave, then incorporated into the food. This keeps getting brought up in a smug way. I want to see research before I stop using it. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything on the science sites. I keep telling her she has bigger things to worry about with toxins from all the cooking in plastic containers, and using non-stick pans gassing off toxins at temps barely hot enough to cook bacon (see Teflon fine paid for toxins: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/14/business/main1124537.shtml). She does talk about some sort of scientific-community conspiracy...but most of the scientists and doctors I know have such HUGE egos, they think everybody else is stupid and they'll save everybody from their competitor's stupidity. I've seen for myself how they stab each other in the back for a book deal, or one-upmanship at work in the clawing up the ladder.By "changing to inedible substance" I meant similar to switching sugar molecules to make Splenda, a non-caloric sweetener. God forbid she should hear about "ionizing" the molecules, but for fun, describe how that's possible with your average microwave. I might want to mess with her someday. Also, I could use quotes & links to scientific sites, or just the links--thanks. These can be either pro or con. Resolved Question: What can I put for hobbies on my CV?

My mothers friends works for an oil company out in Ghana and he has spoken to me and has expressed his interest in taking me out and working for him. He owns the company with his business partner but if they employ me he will have to send a copy of my CV to him so they can both agree on it. I send over a copy but didn't mention my hobbies, so he asked if I could edit it and include this. I really don't know what to put. I'm only 19 so I haven't had that much experience with a lot of things. I think the main thing that he is looking for is: - I can work abroad without getting home sick - I can work 7 days a week for up to 3 months at a time - I won't let him down - I am a hard worker How can I incorporate this into my hobbies section? more

Resolved Question: Want to buy a restaurant, but I found out the current owner is paying off the Health Inspector! HELP!!!?

There is a restaurant I want to buy. It is a historic building in the small town where I live and it does need work and restoration. Which is perfectly fine with me. The place isn't for sale, but I am planning on making an offer because the owner doesn't care about the restaurant and because of that the business is struggling. I have a killer plan to turn that around. But my question is, I recently found out that the owner is paying off the Inspector to keep their restaurant open. How do I proceed? Like I said, I know the building needs work. It is incorporated into my business plan. (Plus since it is a historical building I wanted to use that to my advantage and get a grant or a special loan to restore it.) What do I do about the bribery? Do I tell someone about it? I am going to try and take part in a mentor type program from the local SBA. Do I tell them about it? What about the inspector himself? Can I request not to be inspected by him? What if he purposely fails us because I told on him? Or because I won't continue the bribery? What do I do?The building is the key to my business plan. It has a ballroom over looking the city on the 2nd floor from the early 1900's that needs to be restored. My mom has experience and connections for booking events such as weddings, company parties, etc. The menu is really great, but it is the building itself that makes the plan outstanding! So...it is vital to the plan. I have to do whatever it takes to obtain it. It's not going to be just a restaurant, but a rental space for events as well. more

Resolved Question: does it matter? how do i fix it?

let me explain. Recently a board of directors that i've hand-picked has been helping me to start a non-profit organization for charity. I have of course met with lawyers for certain aspects of the planning, but the money is coming out of my pocket right now and i cant afford to consult with them for little issues like this. here's the problem: i filed (well mailed) the certificate of incorporation today. about ten minutes back from the post office, it caught my attention that i could register my business name with the secretary of state, however in the state of ohio the name must include inc., incorporated, co., coorporation, etc. In my articles of incorporation i did not include this title. my question is how difficult would it be to to change the name to include inc. now? could i register the name with the secretary to include inc. and worry about changing it on my certificate later? and if anyone wanted to address if i have to wait for my articles of incorporation to be filed before i mail the ss-4 for an employer identification number i wouldnt mind.... p.s. im only 16. while i expect many people will underestimate the possibility of my success due to this fact, im mentioning it because my resources are limited and im not above taking any help that i can get. any addition information/advice would be much appreciated. thanks!for that first comment guy. to answer your question, i didnt register the name. its obviously a small business and in my state its not required to register the name with the state. i just filed the certificate. more

Resolved Question: How Does Business Credit Work?

I know it's seperate from personal credit. But I have a small incorporated business...and say if I decide to build business credit on it....is it only for that particular business....or will it be "my" business credit and I can use that to get loans to start another type of business later on? I want to open up a restaurant in two to three years so I'm wondering if I should just keep on making my personal credit better or just make my business credit good if I can use that towards another business purchase more

Voting Question: How can I incorporate a business with someone from outside the country?

I have a friend and colleague that I have worked with on a couple side projects while he has been here on a temporary business visa from India. He is a very skilled programmer and I would like to start a business and work together, but most of the opportunities are here in the US and we need to be together to make this happen. How do I go about getting him here from a legal/immigration standpoint? (He is scheduled to return to India soon to work again with his current company) Should I incorporate and then go through the immigration offices here in the Raleigh area? Is it a huge challenge to get an H1B? What are my options – I’m new to this. He is open to the business idea but seems to be unsure of all the avenues we can take - he mentioned doing work from India, but I would prefer for him to be here. more

Voting Question: Being paid less than my female counterparts.?

I work in a very busy department for a company. This department is primarily women (3 women and myself, a man). We all work very hard, each of us having our own stronger points which helps bolster each others weaker points. There is a hierarchy here. I was at the bottom (paid a measly £12k) but have worked my way up over 3 years. We recently had to make a redundancy for one of the ladies as she was not coming to work due to relationship issues. Management decided we were able to incorporate her job into our already busy jobs. We did so, and I received a wage increase to reflect my extra workload and a hike up the corporate ladder. Above me were my two other colleagues. At this point one of them has been off sick for two years with stress, but has retained her £36k wage somehow and company car. I cant climb much higher with her off ill. My third colleague works extremely hard and is a real workhorse. She knows the job backwards, but the cost of this diligence and excellence is she has hardly any life at all outside of work. She is paid a reasonable wage, enough to buy a property, whereas I have been doing the same job for some months now on £14000 a year. I have a degree and years of experience in a variety of roles, plus on top of doing the same role as my colleague I am also the IT support technician here (as I have lots of experience from other jobs in this, its been added to my job description) and I have been told I must handle all incoming formal complaints as the 'complaints liaison' for customers, again due to my experience in the past with high profile cases and complaints handling. My third colleague has now left as she has decided to have a baby with her partner. She says she will be back as her partner is on far less in terms of salary nd they cant afford it. In the meantime, my managers have said they will pay me pro-rata the same rate as my pregnant colleague as I am doing her and other peoples job, plus I get an assistant (yet to arrive!). I know how much my colleague was paid as she told me. The amount they are paying me is only £1000 more than my current wage, far less than I thought I was due. The business is having a hard time financially. With the current climate I'd rather keep my job than demand more money but I am not happy. Any advice? Thanks for replies. Just to add, it's not that I am seeking to leave my job, merely be recompensed at the same rate as others for the same job. more

Resolved Question: MBA application: Work experience in a family owned business?

I see that work experience happens to be an important prerequisite for getting into a good business school. I graduated in fall 2009 and have started working right after and plan to do so until I start my MBA in a year. But I happen to be working for my father's firm which is a very well reputed and successful company in my country of Bangladesh, and I currently hold the position of a Company Director. Granted that I have inherited a spot in top management as my father is the chairperson, hence I would like to know whether this would give me an edge if I were to specify this in my application? Or would I be better off specifying that I am actually employed as a manager and not specify that my family owns the company? I am not sure how an admission personnel would perceive my situation. The fact of the matter is that my purpose of doing an MBA is to bring back all that I learn and incorporate it in how I would run my company when I return back to my country. more

Resolved Question: If I give a personal guarantee on a business credit card for my corpo how does it affect my personal credit?

First let me say that I DO NOT want to know how or pay you to obtain business credit without a personal guarantee! I own a small business and I am incorporated, with an EIN and seperate business bank account. I am interested in possibly obtaining a business credit card, or a business line of credit. I was looking at some different banks/card and I notice the majority would like a personal guarantee. I have no problem with that, I just would like to know how it will affect my personal credit. Does the business credit card/line of credit show up on my personal credit report? Is there a hard inquiry when applying and/or giving my personal guarantee? If I apply for a business credit card/line of credit with a bank/credit card company that I currently have a personal credit card through does the business card affect that personal card? Any information would be great. Seems like all the info out there is about getting business credit without a personal guarantee, and paying for that info. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What should I do about gutting and rebuilding my house?

So I don't really no were to start on renovating the house my mom is giving me for a wedding present. Currently I am working part time, going to school full time, planning my wedding that is a less than a year away, and I am now taking on the project of completely remodeling this older double wide. Yes I most be crazy! Most of the men in my family (which is about the size of a small army) are in the construction business so I will not have to pay for labor (yeah I am lucky) and they know what to do about all the technical aspects of gutting and rebuilding houses. But I am kinda on my own with the design aspect. I like the stuff from Ikea and I am on a very small budget (as in if it gets much over $20K my boyfriend will have me killed lol). The "theme" if you would call it that incorporates nature and foresty. With a big emphasis on a darkly romantic woodland feeling. Can anyone tell me about how much it is going to cost me to completely rebuild this place, about how long it will take, where I can find a good therapist when this is done, and any thing else you can think of. Please I think I am just looking for some help and tips on all this. Thanks so much in advance! more

Voting Question: Is Cosmetology School for me?

Hi everyone! I am currently a full-time college student working towards a degree in business / marketing. However, since the economy has been creating instability in the workplace, I'm worried that earning a degree won't guarantee that I will find a job out of school. Don't get me wrong; I am still 100% dedicated to graduating. I just think it's a good idea to have a back-up plan. So that's where I got this idea... I've always been interested in hair and make up; I've taken my own hair from jet black to platinum blonde and back, and I'm constantly experimenting with make up. Then I got this idea... what if I went to cosmetology school? If I got my cosmetology license, I could work as a hair dresser or make up artist. Not only would this help fund my schooling / life expenses, but it would also be a Plan B if I couldn't get a job right away after college. It would also be a great fall-back down the road, if I ever lost my job or needed to take on a second job. Now, as I mentioned, I am currently a full time college student. That said, my class schedule is very flexible so I could move things around to incorporate cosmetology classes. So here are my questions: 1) How much does cosmetology school usually cost? 2) After graduating from cosmetology school, would I be able to find a job that pays above minimum wage? (Enough to support myself?) Is there a rough estimate of my potential earnings? 3) Any other advice or warnings? I am just toying with the idea now, but I think this would really be something I could enjoy. I would love to hear whatever you have to say! Thank you so much for your time! more

Voting Question: Need some advice with doing web design from home?

I'm an Accountancy student. No work at the moment, so would like to do websites for small businesses for a bit of money to get me through my studies for the next 18 months. I did a web design course about 2 years ago, so I do need to freshen up on those skills. 1. I only want to do brochure websites, for £200 to £250 . Is this a good price? 2. Is it possible to do brochure websites, just using XHTML and CSS only? 3. How do I avoid site maintenance, and other stuff involved with running the website. Can I just email them the completed designed pages, and they sort out their own hosting etc, is this normal practice: that after designing , the web designer is no longer involved with the 'day to day' of the website? 4. What is a good CMS to incorporate into a website for those small businesses who can't afford to pay a web designer every time they need to change something? I appreciate any advice. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Is There Any Way a Public Option Could Be Done Rationally for Health Insurance?

It can't be like the "Bad Bank" idea, where all the bad loans go to be taken off the books of other banks -- all the toxic assets are bought up by the Bad Bank -- It can't be the Crazy Government Insuror who covers everybody, no matter how risky, no matter if they can pay or not. So, OK, then how could it be? If a rational person were hired to come up with a plan for a Public Option Health Insurance Arrangement, what the heck would it look like. "Rational" here means able to create an economically self-sustaining policy, it does not mean drunk on fake compassion based on giving away other people's money (the Liberal sort of idea of rational). Ten insurance companies, each with, say One Billion in capital invested by the Treasury -- so all the shares of all ten companies are held on the Treasury Balance Sheet. The companies are told to 1. At an absolute minumum break even. 2. If possible make a profit. and 3. If possible make a large profit. and 4. Do not write insurance for people who cannot pay premiums consistent with the risk of that insurance agreement. If people have pre-existing conditions, do as the private insurors do a) make them wait a year or two for coverage of those conditions, and b) when they do get coverage charge them a premium based on their true risk going forward. 5. Remember, your task is to compete with the private insurors, but make a profit if you can, and do not be the Crazy Government Insuror (like the Bad Bank). Now, out of the 10 some will run through their capital ($1 Billion) and fold -- and when that happens each and every employee and executive should be fired and permanently barred from further service in the Federal System (that way they have some skin in the game). No additional capital will every be made available, from the US government, to any of these 10 firms. They cannot operate on a lid off infinite money supply basis, or they will just be the Howard Dean Money Machine, that hands out freebies to everyone on the street, like up in Vermont, where all the money machines operate that way, so you should really go up there. Maybe 2 or 3 of the firms will make a profit. If this happens, a goodly share of it should go as bonus money to the execs and employees of that firm. They won for Uncle Sam and for their nation. So, they get a bit extra -- not like Wall Street Bankers, but better than the average civil servant -- so look for 6 figure bonuses, but not 7 figure. Maybe five of the firms would operate around breakeven. Their business models are viable, but not hugely remunerative. That's OK. We want them there. We want their heads above water at all times, and we are not adding money, but as long as they can hang in and write good policies, which they can get underwritten, and re-insured, let them practice their craft -- let them serve -- they also serve who just serve, without making any significant profit. Blue Cross sort of operates that way. Bless them! This would be a rational system. It incorporates the idea of experiment and diversity (10 firms). It punishes failure (fairly harshly). It rewards success (with a generous hand), and it sustains those who just serve without big losses or profits. It has a fixed up-front cost ($10 Billion). Excellence and only excellence should decide who gets to play with that money. No quotas, no timetables, no civil service extra points, no veterans preference -- Straight excellence, nothing else -- it's business not PC LoveFest time. My guess is that over ten years 10 to 20 million people could be taken out of the problem by this plan (very cheap). I think that after fifteen years only 3 or 4 of the government insurors would be left -- they would be the Darwin-Strongest with the Smartest Most Viable Business Models. It should be possible to scale them up using private market capital raised on Wall Street, or in Peking, or Dubai. Quod Erat DemonstratumLet's make this question a "No Clowns Zone". OK? I've tried to be serious and original in my question. How about if people who can't even read it, please just don't bother to put up a post. Have you no shame? For 2 points are you really willing to bozo around on this issue at this time? Do you ever expect to be taken seriously in your life? Have you ever been? This is a question for serious people. It's a solid question, based on an original idea of mine. Comments on it could be authentically useful, if people are willing to care, think, and work a little. My posts are read by a lot of people in Washington and repeated in a lot of places on the internet. So how about the clowns go elsewhere, just on this question, please don't post jokes and insults. more
