Rocky parent EW Scripps OKs plan to divide company

The parent of the Rocky Mountain News will split itself into two separate publicly traded companies this summer.

The board of Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. gave its OK Thursday to divide into the two companies beginning July 1. The Securities and Exchange Commission must still approve the company's Form 10 information statement before the separation can be completed.

Scripps announced last October that it planned to spin off its cable network and interactive divisions into a new company, Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. E.W. Scripps, which will continue to trade under its current stock symbol (NYSE: SSP), will retain the newspaper, broadcast television stations and licensing and syndication businesses.

Under the plan approved by the board, shareholders of record as of June 16 will receive one share of Scripps Networks Interactive stock for every E.W. more

SPX Corp. Q2 2008 Earnings Call

Based on the strength of our second quarter and the continued strong order trends in our key businesses, we're raising our 2008, EPS guidance range $0.20 to $6.40 to $6.60 per share. Additionally, we're raising our full year free cash flow guidance to a range of $300 to $320 million.

Taking a closer look at the consolidated results for the quarter, revenue was $1.6 billion, up 29% or $348 million over last year. Businesses acquired in 2007, accounted for 21% of the revenue growth, primarily driven by APV.

Organic growth was 4%, highlighted by 14% organic growth from our Flow segment. And foreign exchange fluctuations benefited revenue by about 5%.

Segment income increased $60 million, up 40% over Q2 in 2007. The increase was driven by strength in the power and energy markets, 2007 acquisitions, and success with the operating initiatives. more

Your technology tent pole

One of my favorite questions for analysts and consultants is what small businesses should learn from big businesses. Let me quote Michael Dortch, long time IT analyst now with the Aberdeen Group, from an interview I did with him last spring: "If you are not entirely dependent on IT to do business and succeed competitively now, you will be by the time I'm finished speaking."

When I speak to small business groups and tell them that quote, a few strenuously object. Comments tend to run along the lines of, "I run a flower shop, not a computer company. That doesn't apply to me."

Small businesses buried by credit card debt

The financial health of small businesses is deteriorating quickly, if Advanta Corp.'s earnings, released yesterday, are any indicator. The issuer of small-business credit cards from Spring House said it gave up on collecting $130.5 million of its customers' debts in the second quarter, up from $102.1 million in the first quarter and $50.7 million a year earlier. "The economy continues to challenge small-business owners and their ability to pay bills," said Dennis Alter, chairman and chief executive officer of Advanta, which last year was the fifth-largest credit card lender to small businesses, according to the Nilson Report. Advanta has ratcheted back on growth while it tries to get a handle on troubled loans to its customers, which typically have 10 or fewer employees and less then $1 million in annual revenue. more
