No arrests yet in downtown break-ins

Dalton police had no suspects as of Friday afternoon in the burglary of five businesses in a downtown Dalton office complex Monday night. Five businesses in the Pruden Building, located on West Crawford Street, were entered.According to reports from the Dalton Police Department:� A rear door was broken out at the Elder Law Firm. Several computers were stolen but the exact number was not known at the time of the report. David McGuffey, the owner of the firm, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.� Two laptops were taken from Advanced Insurance Strategies. A desk, valued at $1,000, was also damaged. Dalton Mayor David Pennington, who owns the company, said he had been in the building since 1984 and had never experienced a break-in before.� An electric oil heater and $50 was taken from the Law Offices of Fuller and McCay. more

Open Question: Can we afford to buy a business?

My husband and I are thinking about buying an existing business but have no idea what we would realistically be able to afford. And before you suggest going to see the bank manager, I'm just looking for some general guidance (for example if you're getting a mortgage a good guideline used to be 3 x single salary or 2.5 x joint salary). I appreciate it isn't as simple as that for businesses, but was hoping someone could just give us some pointers. We are looking for a small hotel/ restaurant/ cafe with owners accommodation, either freehold or leasehold. We would both give up our current jobs and run this together with me possibly working part-time elsewhere if required, but for the purposes of this example the only income would be from the business. We have £50k equity in our property (which we wouldn't need to live in as there's owners accommodation) and we also have approximately £7k savings. We have no other debts (credit cards, personal loans etc) and have a good credit rating. If I give you an example of a business we've seen advertised - leasehold £50k, sales revenue £290k (no profit details), rent £25k pa. Can anyone give us any general pointers as to how we can work out whether something like this is affordable for us? more

Open Question: I have a small business idea, how could I make it happen?

Im 17 and study business, english, finance and economics at college. I earn around £600 a month in a part time job. I have a passion to work in business when i am older and I didnt do any planning (although i can make a business plan), an idea popped into my head one day and i believe it could work. This idea is not a new product it is a new style of plastic bottle. I would target it at sports people i.e runners and footballers. It is a style of bottle that will make running with a bottle in your hand more user friendly than it already is. unfortunately I have seen this bottle but only as a re usable bottle i have never seen a brand sell water etc in this style. I believe that people will prefer these as a quick buy and bin after the run instead of a buy and take home as it provides hassle. I could make a brand name and include istonic drinks and water in the bottle, or maybe i could just aim it at current brands as these brands havent got this style of bottle yet? Open Question: Why do conservatives argue that the government does not create jobs?

They argue that government spending does not create jobs or stimulate the economy. They argue that only private sector jobs stimulate the economy. However, my personal life experience indicates otherwise. As many of you know, I owned a manufacturing company. Many of my contracts were government contracts to make parts for aircraft, trains, and many other products. This is government spending that actually stimulated the local economy. ALL of the other business owners I know make money from government contracts. Whether it is a service contract with the GSA, or a military contract to make spare parts, the private sector benefits tremendously from government spending. Furthermore it isn't limited to federal government spending. The local police and fire department also spend money. When they buy new police cars, they spend money to get the cars retrofitted with lights, decals, and interior renovations. This work often goes towards local private businesses. Local schools issue contracts to local companies for general upkeep, from landscaping and maintenance to supplies and renovations. Government contracts are issued to clean the carpets, paint the walls, and maintain the HVAC. Not only that, but government employees spend the money they earn. They have salaries and they spend, which stimulates the local economy. Government employees do not hoard money in their mattresses. Government employees buy houses, cars, and home supplies, just like you and me. If we stop government spending, like conservatives want, then we lose all these contracts and jobs. If we ship all these things to the private sector, then they become more expensive because the private corporation needs to add money for their profit so the owner can become a billionaire, so privatizing everything will result in higher costs. In short, government contracts already produce billions in stimulus. I don't need a television or radio personality to tell me how government spending helps local businesses. I see it all the time. QUESTION: Despite direct observational evidence, why do Republican conservatives continually state that government spending creates no jobs?Also keep in mind, that government spending MUST by LAW be on American companies, while private sector companies continuously ship our jobs overseas. So government spending = only on American companies. Private corporate spending = jobs in China or India where labor is cheaper. Why would private sector spending help more than government spending? more

Open Question: I want to invest in selling on craigslist, how do I know what price to sell stuff for what's best to sell?

I have a lot of computer junk sitting around : Power Supplies, IDE Cables, Video cards, a few DVD Roms some CD Roms, Motherboards OLD ones and 1 newer DDR2 Dual Core support, Printers, a PS1, adapters for Guitar Pedals rotors, printers, anything that uses an adapter pretty much have. Also I have African Items to sell for and from African Missionary trips. Like right now I have an African Mask and African Jewelery, So I have more then just computer stuff I was thinking about trying to start some kinda business with buying and selling through craigslist and maybe EBay to but mostly craigslist. I was gonna build computers and sell them or sell off parts. I guess what my question is is : What's the best way to make money with craigslist by selling stuff on it. What should I sell that would sell the best, something I can invest in and make a profit? It doesn't have to be computer items only. Yet that was the general way that I was going/thinking cause I have lots of computer stuff and I have A LOT of computer Knowledge as a IT TECH. Does anyone know what people want out there? Maybe the African items and such might be the best but how do I know what what price to sell my stuff for? I am thinking of starting a business selling amazingly delicious organic and healthy cupcake and cake making kits. The kits will contain pre-measured amounts of difficult to find completely organic ingredients, with all the dry ingredients already mixed together and the "wet" ingredients also pre-measured and packaged separately but alongside the rest of the ingredients. All the customer will have to do is mix and put the batter in the oven. I would like to do different mixes you can't just find in the grocery store with exotic flavors and gluten free, vegan and low sugar options. I would also send along my home made frosting in corresponding flavors (shipped frozen). I plan to sell organic gluten free vegan cupcake/cake mix, allergen free brownie mix, and cookie mixes. All my recipes are tried and true and a super delicious way to indulge without the guilt or spending hours in the kitchen. Provided shipping was not too expensive, how much would you pay for this convenience? Keep in mind how much it would cost to buy the organic ingredients yourself such as coconut oil, xanthan gum, almond flour, etc. Everything will be attractively packaged and promptly shipped. I will be selling my mixes mostly online and locally with free samples of already made goodies for people to try then buy the mix and try at home. I am not trying to get rich off of this I just genuinely enjoy baking and I want to show people that baking healthy treats doesn't have to be gross or complicated. While some Blacks are selling dimebags just to get by, the Asian and White guys are running dirty businesses pulling in millions. The Black hooker on Craigslist charging $150/hh is more likely to get busted than the White chick who is serving clients in upscale hotel rooms at $1,000.00 a pop. The only reason Spitzer got busted was because he was a hypocrite and someone ratted him out. I'm sure you guys know the sex slave trade is a multi million dollar business worldwide run by Asians, Europeans and South Americans. Yet, our tax money is spent busting the indie hooker trying to pay her rent by banging guys at $80 a pop. The Black pimp on the street is run in, but the White man running white and Asian women to rich men aren't bothered. Also have you noticed that most of the hooker agencies that are busted and written about in the papers are usually run by women? Are we to believe that all escort agencies are run by women? Also, if a Black person or a woman is running an illegal business you can bet the authorities will stop at nothing to shut them down, while the lighter skin men laugh and continue to run their businesses. I really think it's because Blacks usually boast too much when they get a few dollars and let everyone know your business. Remember the film American Gangster? Where Frank Lucas was running a successful drug business and choose to keep everything on the DL and was doing well until his wife persuaded him were a fur coat in public. Then the Feds and IRS wanted to know how did a Black man get the money for a fur coat, a mansion and beautiful Puerto Rican wife. The White or Asian take their illegal funds, buy houses, open up legit business to report income to the IRS and continue to do their dirt. As long as Uncle Sam is getting a nut you are doing fine. I laugh when some idiot tries to convince me that every successful, rich White or Asian man became so due to hard work and education. HA! They just didn't get caught. These jerks only post news about crimes committed by Blacks. They deny the fact that generations of White people have benefitted from horrendous crimes against humanity perpetrated by their forefathers. Those Whites that were too dumb to make anything out of themselves need to use minorities as a scapegoat for their failures. Open Question: Was there ever a company called Warren Luggage?

I can't find it anywhere on Google, I mean there is a few pages that the company is on but it's nothing helpful. I bought a vintage suitcase and I would like to know how much it would be and it's hard when I can't find the company. The suitcase was from the 1940's I think or around there. How come I can't find this business? What happen to it? The only thing I found, and I don't even know if it's correct or not is that this business is or was located in Mass., USA. Resolved Question: Warren Buffet style of investing?

For an average investor who buys stocks through the Exchange, unless the stocks are traded ( buying low and selling high ), no money can be made. How does holding stocks for a long period of time ( like Buffet suggests ) make any money for anyone. Even if the stock goes up in value, there is no liquidity unless they are sold. Is there is difference in how Buffet and others like him buy businesses as compared to plainly buying shares at the Exchange? This is something not clearly explained in layman terms. Can someone please explain?@Rod Lleyton Thank you for the clear explanation. I still need to know this: If Buffet keeps all the shares he buys with him forever, he does not 'make money' , right? I mean its all on paper. Does his method of investing also involve offloading the shares, like you said, for cash-flow. Or is there some other way with which he keeps liquid? I have read a lot on Buffet but never ever read his company's letters to the investors. Guess I will take your suggestion and start reading them. I have also read extensively on Robert Kiyosaki and Benjamin Graham's, The Intelligent Investor. Whereas Kiyosaki's approach talks of positive cashflow all the time, Buffet's approach is pretty passive ( which is also reflected in Kiyosaki's second book about '...where the rich are investing'). Open Question: Reasons for industrial decline in America?

Search for cheaper labor has driven investors overseas to cheaper labor pools. Investors are made out to be the bad guys. US workers are made out to be the victims of investors greed. With all of the powerful unions led by powerful Fat Cat union bosses, placing the demands on big business which inevitable drove industry to foreign shores, how come you never see these unions pooling there own cash to restart, under their direct control, the companies which they drove away? My guess is they could not, or would not, tolerate the very same cost and expense that they demanded of investors knowing that THEY, and not someone else, were subsidizing a losing proposition. Apparently everyone in the USA wants to buy cheap, but nobody in the unionized USA is willing to work cheap. And we have a certain portion of our society that don't feel the need to work at all. But that is a whole different illness that is has been plaguing America since LBJs Great Society debacle of the 1960s. OK sound off you economical Whiz Kids. everyone is too busy to give a damn about you? Seems like life's issues often take precedence over what really matters in life...which is your FAMILY. Some people love money, some people love power, some people love drama. I love my FAMILY. I often feel that they don't feel the same. My real Dad went to jail when I was 7...(30 year prison sentence).he has a cell phone/email but doesn't contact me with it...only business situations. My Mother doesn't return my phone calls, but she's always on Facebook at 3 a.m, and constantly telling me she'll call me back, only to click the line over, to talk to this married man who buys her everything that she wants. I no longer have a relationship with my stepfather (the man my Mother was with for over 13 years) because he sexually abused me (for years on end) AND my NOW 17 year old sister. My current boyfriend has been trying to have his "away time" from me lately, but if I do the same "I must be cheating". That's fine though. . I'm am 27 years old, the oldest of 5, and people tell me I'm being overly emotional, immature and too sensitive. I disagree. I think in life, it's the little things that count. I don't want anyone putting flowers on my grave. Give them to me now, so I can smell them. People always want to boo hoo when someone croaks over, but never called them when they were alive and well. My best friend (Only friend in fact) has this habit of contacting me to throw these brilliant ideas on the table, then she turns around and flakes on me. For example: She knows I'm looking for a job, so she calls me the other day like "Hey girl, how would you like to watch the twins for X amount of dollars a month. I told her I wouldn't mind but would have to talk to my boyfriend about it. I hung up, talked to him and tried to call her back to tell her it was a go, and she ignored my texts and calls for the rest of the night. She did the same thing after asking me to move in with her once. I know that people have their lives, but the things that my mother doesn't call me back for are stupid things...small things. What could be so important that you don't call your first born back for 4 days? She babysits my brothers 2/3 daughters and kisses his @ss because he has a short temper and will have nothing to do you with you if you don't. I'm just feeling really lonely right now, and everyone thinks I'm being small about this. I'm just going to do my own thing I guess, and if my Mother calls ignore her for awhile. First of all I'm divorced 6 months ago. Then I've met this guy which I thought I'd give it a chance, I've been out with him manytimes he was extremely kind and polite, I was also helping him about his business (we live in different country although we have the same origin) I trusted him more when one day we went to his place and there's only two of us there 5 hours in the same room and I felt totally safe, he was unlike the other guy who'll try to touch or make me feel uncomfortable. He spent 2 months in my country, we got to know each other more, getting closer, more intimacy. He said he'll never find anyone like me and tht I'm all that he needed and I'm the best woman he has ever met, but due to our tradition he should be married long time ago from the family arrangement but he was in America for 10 years so he's a bit different, I asked him why has has never been married, he said he tried 3-4 times before but when he sit and talk with the girl's family it didn't work out.... Sometimes I felt he's afraid of commitment, he got to talk to my Mom on the phone and he told her how nice I am and that he will take care of me but when he met her he doesn't open up his feelings that much and since the beginning that we met he said he'll talk to my dad if we decided to get married. I met lots of his friends and relatives, also 2 close cousin which he said they're more than a brother to him (he's a single child) they did liked me alot and even courage him to marry me but I've heard him said "not now I don't want to deal with break up or divorce" We've plan to travel the world together, first in Asia and he's going to invite me to his house this December and he planned to buy a house in California for retirement, this September we'll open a company together. Now it has been a week since he left I felt terrible, he called everyday though but he said may be sometimes he can't call everyday but its ok I'm his heart and no matter where a guy goes he'll be back to his heart. He has also one profile in dating site which he's a premium member but he said he doesn't use it so I hid his profile but from time to time I saw a message sent to another girl he said its not for him, all of his friends are married so when they did anything like this they'll put it through his name, Should I be concern? He has also deleted all the mobile contacts, messages from the girls he knew before and all the mails and photos in his camera... Resolved Question: I think I have Adult ADD and don't know what to do?

I am a 23 y/o male and have taken all of the online tests and they have all said the same. I score 80, which means "highly likely" to be suffering from ADD. I have refused to consider the idea for a long time because I was raised to believe that ADD was an excuse for being "bad" or "lazy" or whatever else. I have a ridiculously hard time concentrating on my work, I am the Business Development Manager for a Car Dealer. I have a hard time writing long emails at work so I usually use templates and just fill in the important crap. I say crap to my girlfriend of three years that, in my head sound ok, but are mean and rude. I refuse to read unless I have to, and when I have to read, I skim (which does me as much good as not reading) so that I don't have to concentrate. My desk is always a mess. Once a month or so I will clear it off just to find it a mess again in a few hours. I leave cabinets open ALL the time at home. While I do not mind cleaning, I never seem to remember to wash my dishes or pick up my clothes until yelled at (yes at 23). I tend to "zone" out a lot. I tend to "see the big picture" but lose it shortly after. I put plans together for projects only to never follow through. I was tested at seven for being "gifted" and was cursed with that tittle. I say this because I managed D's all the way through school. I have always procrastinated. I can remember countless times when my mother would come to my schools begging the teachers to let me turn a project in late. One example is that I bought a car about 4 months ago, and had received my new license plate 2 months ago. I put my license plate on last night because I realized that I told my girlfriend I would do it 2 months ago. I have a feeling like I have to move something constantly but have managed to hide it by wiggling my toes or popping knuckles etc. It's taking me almost an hour to write this post. Anyways, my concern is that I have no idea of how to go about being checked. Everything says talk to a psychiatrist, but I don't know how to get to that point. I do not have a regular doctor. I just recently picked up my new insurance plan and am not sure what to do next. The truth is that it kinda scares me. Please help with some step by step advice. Each new salesman makes a base of 35k + commission + health insurance + retirement + all the payroll taxes you must pay. But you are not quite certain how the new laws will affect your business. 1.Under the healthcare reform bill, businesses must complete paperwork from the IRS when they spend more than $600 on goods from another business. A similar regulation in the past only applied to services of above $600. -- So now you must do paperwork for each and every supplier you order goods from during the year in addition to any services. Everything you buy, from every supplier will now have to be filed with the IRS. You're accountant has already informed you that his fees will be going up. 2. He also knows that because he has more than 20 employees, he will be hit with the new Medicare Tax increase 3. In addition, you are aware that Congress is planning to bring up a new energy bill and you're not sure how that will affect the costs of your service fleet of vans, utility bills etc 4. I was told that I needed to get a tax license to operate with a dba license in Texas. I was curious as to how people would take that. Being that my products (vintage game systems) will be sold from home, as i have a daytime job, is there a way to get the price even. I was curious as to how Avon sellers charge tax. Do they set their prices at, lets say as an example, $37.43 so that with tax it comes out to $40.00 even? Any other helpful tips for home business would be appreciated. Yes he has improved. But not by much. How is it fair that back in 2002 to the best heel of Smackdown, Matt Hardy Version 1 gets buried time and time again and the biggest flop of 2004 keeps getting countless opportunities and is shoved down our throats? I managed to spit him out but most of you guys have seemed to bought into this mediocre rip off of Diamond Dallas Page and Stone Cold Steve Austin. My wife recently went on a business trip to India for 5 weeks. During her first three weeks our phone convos were good. we even Skype and chatted in good spirits. The last two weeks seemed as if she was becoming distant. I kept asking her if everything was ok...she always said "yeah...im just thinking." (she became increasingly distant as her trip came to an end). When she finally came home after 5 weeks (as soon as she stepped out of the limo) i didn't feel any emotion. no connection at all. In the emails i read, it seemed as if this person stayed in her hotel room for a series of nights, they went on walks together, she even bought him gifts before she left. she came home about 3 weeks ago and she has bought phone cards and apparently is talking to him everyday. My fiance cheated on me, right at the end of our relationship. I bought her a house (new), a brand new high end Mac for her PhD program, etc. and I was just about ready to sign for the keys for the house, then she distanced herself. Tried to get her back, found out she had met someone on facebook while I was away on business and went out with him. Broke up with me that week. I made a few mistakes with her, went with a buddy to a topless bar (and invited her - which she came to - was sort of a fantasy for us - but she told me after she didn't like it), was not as emotionally there for her when her mother got sick (was more analytical about it) - and a really big mistake, got caught 'regifting' some jewelry. But I friggen paid for everything, I catered to her, cooked, bought her stuff. Anyhow, she took off, tried to get her back a few times, not pestoring her, just telling her I love her and that I forgave her. But each time she told me to move on. So...after about 3 months I did. 6 months later she tries to come back full force, says she loves me, that she made a mistake not communicating with me (I asked her what was going on when she shut down at the end), and that listening to her friends/others was a mistake - most of whom did not know me. The woman would simply not tell me what she was thinking. I am dating someone else, but still have feelings for ex. But I don't think I can get back with someone who dumped me without even doing it face to face or having a discussion about our issues. Then, how can I be the one after she dated two guys during our relationship and after? How can I be 'the one'. I am very sorry for my mistakes, but I never ever cheated on her, and I took good care of her! When it is Ford Motor Company, who refused government bailout and assistance, that has been the most successful and profitable through this whole down turn period. The biggest news coming out of GM is the introduction of their $41,000 VOLT. This almost sounds like an oxymoron when you ask yourself who will spend this kind of money to save a few bucks on GAS? Certainly not the wealthy who are the only demographic that can afford it, but really aren't ready to give up comfort for fuel economy. Than who? Given the Ford experience, do you really think bailout and stimulus really were necessary and really work ? How many years away is GM from turning a consistent profit, or is it really possible at all, with the UAW as a partner? How long before we the tax payer say enough, we don't belong in the auto making business and we no longer care to subsidize its operations ? If it is GM where these jobs have been saved and we the tax payer are still seeing government money pouring into GM, that means we are subsidizing the cost of these jobs in addition to the bailout that has already occurred. Open Question: Is Los Angeles Really Better than the San Fernando Valley?

I have lived almost my whole life in the San Fernando Valley, until a year ago, and now I live in Burbank. I go to a magnet high school school in L.A., about 30 minutes driving time, but on the school bus it takes 1 hour and 10 mins. They have business classes for people interested in majoring in that field. Anyways, considering the distance to the school from Burbank, i'm the only on there who lives in Burbank and there are only 7 kids total from the Valley, everyone else is from L.A. What bothers me, though, is that I have occassionally heard different students there talking about Los Angeles being better than the Valley, and it makes me wonder, how can L.A. possibly be better than the Valley? I mean, all you see in L.A. are homeless people lying around, almost like u see 7 11's in what seems like every other block. Also, from the 3 or 4 times i've been to L.A. for reasons other than going to school, I noticed that there seems to be NO big-name store (e.g. Target, Best Buy) around, only little, individually owned stores, which made me wonder if they buy anything that's not fake and from the alleys (people who live there know what im talking about). And needless to say, the apartments and "houses" of L.A. are garbage and look ghetto, and the people who live there are low to lower-middle class. So, how can L.A. be superior to the Valley (having the Lakers and Dodgers doesn't count). more

Voting Question: Is this a unethical way to do business?

My parents primary source of income comes from real-estate. Basically they buy a piece of land and build houses, condominium, townhouses and small malls. We finance, at a higher interest than banks and if they don't pay we maintain ownership of the property and re-sale it. We also, buy foreclose homes and we also do another type of purchase, were we buy the taxes from home and basically purchase a good property for less(between 30,000-50,000). In the process, we evict the owners and resale it for a huge profit. The later event usually come when kid inherit their parents home. They don't make enough to pay for taxes and the house goes to the market, even tho the house is fully paid for. How responsible is the person purchasing the home of their mistake? We provide a avenue for them to reach their dream. Then, why do people blame us for taking advance of them? We also have bills to pay, mortgage, and wagers for our employes. more
