Welsh language ‘can boost business’

EMBRACING Welsh can strengthen a brand and help business compete in an increasingly tough marketplace, a leading marketeer has said.

Richard Houdmont, the director for Wales of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, has called on business to use the language as a marketing tool as thousands of people get ready for this year's National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

He says the festival provides as good a time as any for business to "adapt and embrace the Welsh language to make the most of marketing their business".

The Eisteddfod will be held in the capital between August 2-9, with visitor numbers expected to exceed last year's figure of 155,000. Mr Houdmont, originally from Yorkshire and a Welsh learner, said: "In 1991, there were 508,000 Welsh speakers over the age of three in Wales, by 2001 it had increased to 582,000. more

That opinion said the state had no authority to impose sanctions against businesses for employing illegal immigrants.City Attorney Dean Skokan has previously brought that opinion to the council's attention, saying the city didn't have authority, either.Getzschman and Edwards agreed Wednesday that although the proposal was killed, discussion is not over."Last night and this last month has been an eye-opener for the community, and there are definitely issues here," Getzschman said.Edwards said he favors creating a task force to address some of the problems. The city needs to put pressure on federal officials and the Nebraska congressional delegation to help move the issue off center, Edwards said.During testimony before the vote Tuesday, resident Sylvia Sanchez asked the council to proceed in a way that would not divide the community, spark hatred and destroy families."I'm here to ask you all to look into your hearts and ask yourself if this is truly the right thing to do," she said.Supporters, meanwhile expressed their frustration over lax enforcement by federal officials. more

Recognizing And Responding To The Regulatory Implications

Industrial firms and businesses outside these segments will not be subject to those requirements, but will face substantial cost increases. For example, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated the 2012-2016 impact of S. 2191 at $90 billion per year. The National Association of Manufacturers projected about an 8% decrease in the value of industrial shipments by 2030. Specifically, NAM projected an increase in gasoline costs by 2020 of $0.43 to $1.46 per gallon by 2030, and an increase in industrial electricity prices by 2.7 to 3.2 cents per kilowatt hour.

EPA economic impact analyses projected an increase in gasoline cost of the same magnitude, but projected that it would take until 2050 to be reached. Before one takes too much comfort from EPA's analysis, however, it merits note that EPA also assumed a base price of oil per gallon in 2050 of $68.11, about half of today's level. more
