Sam Petter may not fit the image of an entrepreneur formed in this age of Dragons' Den and The Apprentice. A former designer, she was working as a yoga teacher and helping to run her family's organic farm in Kent when she started her company, Tatty Bumpkin. But when I met her in her office in an ancient building on the farm – which she shares with her brother's computer software business – it is clear that she is in many ways the archetypal entrepreneur identified by academics and other experts. She has a clear vision, an almost tangible passion about what she is doing and a huge commitment to making it happen. As if that were not enough, the business also utilises skills and experience she already had.
Tatty Bumpkin was, says Petter, born as a complete idea. more

Many Nigerians get swindled by people who promise them placements
So I quickly established myself as a young entrepreneur. I used to deliver papers; I had a stand going on by the time I was eight. I used to make money sweeping my steps and 10 other steps in the mornings. I was also charging people to enter and play on my steps. If you played with my dolls, I charged 25 cents. If you sat on my steps, 15 cents. I had to empower myself because my mom didn't have a lot of money and my father unfortunately was involved in civil rights and then there was a lot of segregation. My father, who had a law degree, could only work as a chauffeur. So my mom had to work like three or four jobs to maintain us. In America, they have welfare, but we were not a part of it. We were taught that you should pull yourself by your own bootstraps," she explains.
Another factor, which she insists affected her life greatly is the era in which she grew up. more
"Fuel prices are denting profits," says transport entrepreneur
No wonder courier entrepreneur Kate Lester is fuming.
"Fuel now constitutes 40 per cent of most firms’ vehicle operating costs," says Lester, who founded Guildford-based courier company Diamond in 1992.
"There are 3,500 courier companies in this country. Competition is tough so we can’t put prices up. Instead, we have to squeeze our profit margins.
"We’re lucky. We saw it coming," she says. "We’ve diversified into other areas – such as storage and passport services – and we always try to ‘co-load’. If we’ve got a one-way delivery to Manchester, we’ll hook up with another courier to arrange return work."
Lester says that her £1.2m turnover will remain "static" in the next financial year. more
