Sutersville church closes after 117 years of fellowship

The church, whose history stretches back to 1891, closed its doors Saturday, after dwindling attendance left the landmark with just four active members.

The last sermon, delivered by a visiting pastor, the Rev. Aleda Menchyk, and based on the 15th chapter of John, verses 1-12, was titled "Today, tomorrow and beyond."

Lander and fellow parishioner Bill Smith, both church elders, said before the service began that one of their fondest hopes was that the future would be kind to the church building, a small-town American classic with a tall steeple and stained-glass windows, eight of which are etched with the names of deceased parishioners.
