One Year On, 60 percent of businesses have done nothing to protect

Gloucester, UK � 29 July 2008: One year on from the worst floods in living memory, six out of ten UK businesses still haven�t done anything to protect their business critical IT systems. That�s one of the key findings of a survey of more than 300 businesses in some of the worst hit areas of the country about the lessons they�ve learned over the last twelve months. The floods, which engulfed large parts of the UK throughout July 2007, affected more than 30,000 businesses and cost UK plc billions of pounds in lost sales, employee productivity and capital cost of goods. The survey conducted by business ISP, Star, shows that while 75 percent (almost 7 out of 10) of businesses say they have created a plan to help them reduce the impact of major events, the majority hasn�t taken any precaution to protect one of their most valuable resources � IT. more

Sabres add Platinum level Business First of Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres have taken their game to the next level, tweaking their variable pricing system for the 2008-09 season.

The Sabres announced Monday that they will add a Platinum price level for four home contests -- three against the Toronto Maple Leafs and one with the Montreal Canadiens.

Platinum games will be the most expensive at HSBC Arena. The Sabres' other 37 home games will be split among the four traditional levels: Gold (10), Silver (15), Bronze (nine) and Value (three).

Sabres season tickets are currently on sale. General sale of individual game tickets will begin on Sept. 20 at 9 a.m.

Platinum tickets will range from $78 to $233 for an individual game. The other per-game ranges will be $58 to $173 for Gold tickets, $47 to $132 for Silver, $32 to $114 for Bronze, and $22 to $99 for Value. more

Lakeville selectmen divided on business zoning plan

The proposal, which is scheduled to appear on a fall special town meeting, would add small scale businesses in otherwise residential zones to support nearby residents. The areas being considered for the zone include Main and Bedford streets.

Reacting to the Master Plan Subcommittee's review of the plan, Selectwoman Nancy Yeatts said she opposes it.

“More and more as I look at this, I don't like it," she said. “We've been designing where we want our businesses to be. I don't want to take away this town's rural character. This could lead to small businesses all over town."

Selectman Derek Maksy said that is why small areas are being targeted to begin with. Town administrator Rita Garbitt said the feeling is this move would keep the town's rural character as the demand for business properties increases. more

Ryanair, one of the strongest players in the business, confirmed the unprecedented financial threat facing its peers yesterday with a severe profit warning that sent its shares crashing by 22%.

Howard Millar, its deputy chief executive, said the sales outlook had worsened since early June, when the airline had warned that fares would have to rise.

"The UK and Ireland seem to be going into a fairly strong recession and we now estimate that yields [average fare] will fall 5%," said Millar, adding that the carrier's priority was keeping up its load factor - or the amount of seats that it sells a flight.

Under the business model for budget airlines fares are kept low in order to maximise passenger numbers and wring profits from supplementary charges such as bag check-in fees and car hire deals. more
