What Startups Can Learn From Haruki Murakami

I am a software engineer and a tech entrepreneur. I should be betting on my startup instead.

Many individuals and companies make the mistake of jumping into areas they know little about. A few succeed, but most never make it. It is better to start a company around the topic you're an expert in or know a lot about. This will give you an edge and ensure you're not wasting your time.

Start Even and Finish First

Murakami's life is a routine. He rises early around 5am and goes to bed by 10pm. He declines late-night dinners and outings. He runs and works on his books daily. He achieves his magic by pushing equally every day.

When Brad Feld, an early stage technology VC and a marathon runner, recently completed his 11th marathon, he re-learnt this lesson during the run. more

Modine Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2009 Results

"The announced closures of three manufacturing facilities in North America and another in Europe are proceeding on schedule and should result in annualized benefits in a range of $20 to $25 million when fully implemented by the end of fiscal 2010," Burke continued. "During the first quarter, we completed the previously announced sale of our Electronics Cooling business as part of our ongoing portfolio rationalization process. We introduced select, regional price realization initiatives to enhance gross margins. In support of margin-enhanced growth, the Modine Board of Directors has authorized an investment in the next phase of development of our new Origami™ ultra thin-gauged, high performance heat transfer technology. In addition, we are taking actions to address the continuing underperformance in our Korean business and reaffirm our commitment to update our shareholders on the status of those efforts in mid-fiscal 2009."

"As we execute on our recovery plan, we are building our pipeline with new program wins that are consistent with our strategic emphasis on thermal management, technological differentiation, and diversification of products, markets, customers and geographies," said Bradley C. more

US Presidential candidates in China — the personal and the political

Obama's estranged half-brother, Mark Ndesandjo, is an entrepreneur who has been living in Shenzhen with a Chinese girlfriend for several years. Neither man seems particularly eager to talk to the press about the others' existence, but reports indicate Ndesandjo has been promoting cheap exports with his consulting business, Worldnexus. The tie is a potential political bombshell for Obama in a country deeply fearful of what China's inexpensive goods mean for jobs at home.

Resolved Question: I just opened something from my Texas State Comptroller for state taxxes, help please?!?!?

Last year around April I had the inkling to try and start my own web based ecommerce business. Long story short is it never happened. I didn't even get started at all. But I had applied for all the necessary licensing like sales permit, fed tax id etc. Well I periodically got letters from the comptroller between then and now but I tossed them to the side just thinking it was like spam mail to get me trying to move on my business. Well I opened one of them up today and see its them telling me I owe something like $1,000 in fees etc? Ok I had no idea first of all, but I don't have that type of money, and I sure don't feel I hould have to pay since I never even got to start my business. It was all from home and on the internet even if I had. Any ideas or help would be most graciously appreciated...My God Tax Lady, you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you so very very much... more

Voting Question: How much does an ecommerce operations manager make? need help?

Ok, I need help/opinions. I am an ecommerce operations manager for a major retail apparel website. And our area of the company has grown enormously in the last year so there has been more focus and money thrown at us (since online businesses are growing at a rapid pace nowadays). So things have been restructured a bit and I just acquired a new boss. She told me flat out that what I get paid ($45,600) is way below industry standards….so she is going to work on getting me more money. Especially since new people below me will be brought in (since we are much larger part of the business now) at/around my current salary. But she wants me to do research to see what other people in my role are getting paid. I did plenty of research…looked on monster, salary.com, simply hired.com, but didn’t come up with anything informative. When I did searches for my title…it gave me a general salary…which was inbetween $65-80,000 a year. But none of them really came with descriptions. So when I presented this to my boss, she said that because they don’t have descriptions, this information isn’t exactly credible (since those positions might not be exactly what I do). So just reaching out -- asking if anyone can give me any information on what is accurate pay for an Ecommerce Operations Manager? If you are one, or know someone who is in this role…if you could give me any type of credible information that I could give to my supervisor, would be an enormous help! A little background, I’ve been working for this company for almost 5 years. I came fresh out of college starting out as product setup person (set up and pushed all new product to the site)…also did a lot of photoshop touch up work. But since then I’ve been promoted 4 times. But here is some of what I do: Responsible for on time execution and accuracy of all online content, art and site promotional programs. Manages the operations team to ensure all new site updates are implemented on schedule. (2 people report directly to me) Responsible for managing the process to push all products to the site, as well as all landing pages and banners. Creates, controls and updates all navigational changes. Creates collections of product for each trend or promotion being advertised on web or through email,. Build an online catalog for each mail piece The in-house expert for all ecom operations systems/tools. Trains all operations team members in tools, and production practices including QA processes. Works with merchant team to assure satisfactory representation of all products online. Proofs and approves all emails prior to scheduling. Review daily online analytics for visitor behavior online using Omniture and other reporting Responsible as the team lead in new feature or site development on an ongoing basis. Advanced in Photoshop, Scene7, Dreamweaver, HTML, and our ecom ops tools Again, any help or information would be great…really trying to get a salary bump! Thanks so much. more

Resolved Question: I'm currently an independent contractor, will be a DBA, should I file taxes this year?

This is a little complicated, so bear with me. In late August I finished my full-time salaried position at a large Utah-based ecommerce company to start work on my own as an independent contractor. I am doing freelance writing and marketing work for my former company and I'm currently looking for new clients, as well. I started doing independent contracting work for my former company in September while I was traveling around the States and I've worked off and on since. In the meantime, I moved from Utah to Vermont and now I'm a Vermont resident. I have not deposited any of the money I have made yet. I was thinking about setting up a DBA in VT to get clients around the Northeast. My questions: 1. Should I wait until next year to create the business/DBA? 2. Do I have to claim the independent contractor income as this year's income even if I don't deposit/use the money until next year? 3. What about state taxes? Can I simplify things if I wait? Or is it irrelevant? Will I have to file the independent contractor work in Vermont and my salaried work in Utah? Thanks for any input. I'm just starting out, so any help would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Help me choose a tag line!?

I'm starting an ecommerce business that sells earth friendly cleaning products called Lucky Sponge. We will sell existing green cleaning brands and not be producing our own. I need some help choosing a tag line. Can you pick your favorite of these? ...or if you have another idea I'd love to hear it. 1) Green cleaning products. Sponges need to get lucky, too. 2) Cleaning supplies safe for people, pets, and the planet. 3) Get clean and keep the earth green. 4) Go green when you clean. Thank you!More ideas: 5) Where pine-friendly replaces pine-fresh. 6) Green products for your green closetJust want to clarify, I'm not only selling sponges. I'm selling a wide variety of cleaning products. Lucky Sponge is just a catchy name implying that the sponge is lucky not to be used to clean with toxic chemicals. Thanks for your feedback!I like the variation on #3, Biz Advisor! Here's another contender: 7) Green cleaning products. A sponge's dream job! more

Resolved Question: should an ecommerce website logo have .com in it?

I'm starting a new business and developing a logo. I'm trying to decide if the logo should include .com in the name. I've seen many successful ecommmerce sites, like Amazon have .com in the logo and many do not, such as Orbitz. Any advice either way? more

Resolved Question: I need help finishing my business's website, having trouble making changes, any suggestions?

I had a website built from scratch from a friend of mine who is a web designer / programmer, when it was first introduced to me I liked it and it seemed simple. After learning how it works and dealing with it for a few months I realized there was a lot of changes and additions that were needed, unfortunately he was not that experienced and could not fulfill my needs for the website. I ended up having another friend of mine help me out who knows a lot more, I stayed with the original site that my previous friend created but a few changes and additions were added to it. I am much more happier with the outcome of the changes that have been made to the website, however there are still a few changes that need to be made but the programmer I am working with now is stating its to much work to do and I am better off looking into a "ready to use" site that is mainly complete and all I would need to do is add the products I am selling and I am ready to go. or Build another site from scratch exactly the way I want it My first mistake was dealing with two people who can barely speak and understand english, so that barrier is there and at times what I am saying is not being understood 100%, that could only lead to things not being done the right way or nothing being done at all. I need to get this fixed, either fix the one I have now or look into the other two options that I mentioned above. I do not need or want something specatacular, I am looking for something simple for now. As time goes on and money is made I will invest more money into the site and upgrade it but for now I just want my site open to the public so I can start making some money already. Its been almost a year since I had my site first created and I have not yet opened it to the public, its still Under Construction. I am looking for someone who knows about web design / programming / eCommerce webs stores, etc. I just want a site where customers can come and look for the item they want, add it to there cart and purchase it. A simple retail website where I can sell my Office Products. As much help as possible would be highly appreciate. Thank you for your time and patience. more

Okay... we have developed an ecommerce product... there are 2 main people and shareholders.. I have decided we should now have our business cards made as we are about to start marketing the products.... we want to sound both important and multi-facets... What should we put under our names on our cards? one of us is: - the founder - the main shareholder - designs and creates the basis of the products (not programming) - makes all major decisions in the company - oversees everything The othere one of us: - develops the products - will ultimately be over all IT decisions - will have input into all other areas Both of us are managing directors I was thinking: CEO / M.D. & Developer / M.D. - what do you think ?? more

Voting Question: Is there a legal issue when using computer parts from various manufacturers to build a PC and then selling it?

I plan on starting a small business where I will build computer workstations assembled from some of the major computer part manufacturers in the business such as intel, Asus, and Thermaltake. I will market various assembled "product lines" on my eCommerce site with various names for each computer workstation build such as "the titan", "the journey" etc. Is there a legal issue around this? Can I get in trouble for building a workstation out of various manufactured parts and then selling the finished unit as my own creation or is this perfectly legal? Additionally, can I get in trouble for posting pictures on my web site from the manufacturer's site (a computer's case from cooler master for instance)? I would like to know these things beforehand before I begin moving on my ideas, thanks. more

Resolved Question: How do I start a drop shipping web site?

I want to start a home-based business and I've been wondering if drop shipping would be a good choice. I'd rather have my own ecommerce site using drop shippers than sell on eBay, since lots of other sellers there would be using the same suppliers as me. So what I need to know is: If I purchase only a drop shipping list of resources, how do I build the web site myself with all the shopping cart buttons and all? What web hosting features would I need? How do I promote a drop shipping web site? How profitable is a New Age niche? How reliable are drop shippers and how do I do deal with product inquiries, reeturns, etc.? Do I need any type of licensing or permit? How do I get it? What about taxes? Please don't try to promote any drop shipper in your replies. more

Hey all, i am in need of a reliable, skilled, and affordable web developer. I have quite a few business ideas that i am ready to get started. Resolved Question: Can anyone recommend a "green" web hosting service/company? Can you use yahoo ecommerce with another host?

I'm starting a niche natural/eco-friendly ecommerce business and would like to use a green hosting company. I orginally was looking at using Yahoo's Small Business ecommerce solution simply because it's easy and everything is right "out of the box" plus it seems like a great way to get started with an ecommerce biz fairly easily. The only problem is their hosting isn't ecofriendly or "green". I would love to have a "green" web host since this goes along with my business and plus I don't want to be wasting energy. So my question is really two fold, 1) CAN I use a green" hosting service while at the same time using Yahoo's ecommerce solution 2) Which green hosting service is best? more

Voting Question: Reporting and paying taxes with a silent investor?

Im starting a home based online\ecommerce business. I will be forming a LLC as the business structure. A family member will be investing as a silent partner/investor with the promise of a certain percentage of the profits. The family member will have no mangement or decision making duties. My question is how are taxes reported and paid? Am i responsible for all the taxes on the gross amount then what ever is the net profit, I give the silent investor their share? Does the silent investor then need to go report and pay taxes on the income as well? I would think this would be double taxation. Or would I give the silent partner his or her percentage based off of the gross and then he or she would be pay report and pay their own taxes and I would be responsible for my own. more

Ok, I just bought a small ecommerce business online. I have registered for the name in CA, filed the articles of organization, filed for a tax id, got a business credit card, got a business checking account, got a sellers permit and am now ready to start. I purchased the business with a small amount of inventory included with the price. Does anyone know how I would go about lending money to my business? Do I write up a contract or some type of loan. Since I need a decent amount, $xx,xxx to buy more inventory, I wanted to lend the money from my personal account to the business. But, I obviously would like my money back after I profit. Does anyone know the process on doing this or can I simply write a check to my business and later, write a check back to myself from the business? Would I be able to charge myself interest on the loan? If anyone could help, that would be much appreciated. Thanks! more

I have been using a professional ecommerce site to host my business' site. I want to start working on the site in dreamweaver that I just got but I need to know how to download and apportion all the files in proper directories so it is an exact mirror that I can experiment with before I upload. The only other option is starting from scratch and then uploading my pages, but I still want to use some of the host's functions and polls and things I made from their "templates."
