Economy falters, and the repo man gains

After I take it a few more times, he'll be eligible for a Christmas card. One guy, I took his boat four times."

Boat loans, like car loans, give the bank permission to recover its collateral in the case of default, which explains why a repo man can go into a yard without, technically, being guilty of trespassing. Nevertheless, the custom is to get in and get out before the owners, neighbors or authorities notice anything amiss.

Facebook Isn`t the Biggest Time Waster

Business intelligence and operational software is often the biggest source of lost productivity. Heres how solution providers can help their customers gain software efficiency.

Time for a confession: Im a Facebook junkie.

I was a skeptic about the entire social networking phenomenon up until the day I created my Facebook page nearly six months ago. I had been a member of LinkedIn and Plaxo since the day of their inceptions nearly five years ago and never gained any real value from them. My skepticism was quickly washed away. I now have hundreds of Facebook friends, and the platform has become an alternate communications channel with friends, colleagues and business associates. more

Supply and the demand for courses

Postgraduate masters programmes in operations management or supply chain management tend to cover a broad range of activities. "When we talk about the supply chain, we are talking about a range of related roles including procurement, logistics planning, manufacturing and inventory control," says Alan Smart, the director of the MSc in logistics and supply chain management at Cranfield School of Management.

"We go into a lot of detail on some very specific supply-chain scenarios. We have courses on inventory management, distribution centre design and transport management, for example," he says.

Other programmes place more emphasis on specific elements of the supply chain, such as procurement. "Procurement is an increasingly critical function, involving very large projects in terms of cost, complexity and criticality to the business," says Chris Lonsdale, the director of the MBA in strategy and procurement management at the Centre for Business Strategy and Procurement at Birmingham Business School (BBS), part of the University of Birmingham. more

Infosys eyeing buyouts in Europe

Mr S. Gopalakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, told Business Line, "Infosys has two to three companies on its list. We are in discussions with these companies."

Mr Gopalakrishnan declined to give further details and said until Infosys closes the deals he could not give further information. He said Infosys has been active in this regard, and would buy when it finds the right company.

He said the company is expecting to grow faster in Germany, France and Switzerland – markets where local language support is required.

The focus is to acquire capability and people through these acquisitions, he added.

In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008, Europe contributed 29.3 per cent of total revenue, compared with 26.6 per cent in the year-ago quarter. more
