Machinists and engineers question Boeing's 787 business strategy

However, Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney hasn't budged much on the company's global business model.

"We've learned a lot and have the scars to prove it," McNerney said of the 787 in April.

"I think it will be more of an adjustment in strategy rather than a change in strategy," he added.

That position doesn't sit well with Boeing's Machinists, who saw work they used to performing shipped to Japan, Italy and South Carolina for the 787.

The Machinists' contract with Boeing expires Sept. 3. The union went on strike for 28 days in 2005 after negotiations with Boeing failed.

"We're a force to be reckoned with and to be respected," said Mark Blondin, aerospace coordinator for the Machinists.

Boeing and the Machinists began preliminary contract negotiations months earlier than they have in previous years. more

Consumers tired of celeb-based marketing

Brands should stop basing marketing campaigns around sports, music and TV stars as consumers are becoming fed up of celebrity marketing, according to a new report.

The report by market analyst Datamonitor, based on trade interviews and journal research, says over-exposed celebrities have saturated the market and aging populations mean that the growth audience is shrinking.

Marketers must therefore pursue new tactics to avoid the pitfalls associated with celebrity-backed campaigns.

Resolved Question: An interesting story?

Tomato Millionaire - Joke An unemployed man goes to apply for a job with Microsoft as a janitor. The manager there arranges for him to take an aptitude test (Section: Floors, sweeping and cleaning). After the test, the manager says, "You will be employed at minimum wage, $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send you a form to complete and tell you where to report for work on your first day. Taken aback, the man protests that he has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the MS manager replies, "Well, then, that means that you virtually don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed. Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having only $10 in his wallet, he decides to buy a 25 lb flat of tomatoes at the supermarket. Within less than 2 hours, he sells all the tomatoes individually at 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on him that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Getting up early every day and going to bed late, he multiplies his profits quickly. After a short time he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again so that he can buy a pickuptruck to support his expanding business. By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pickup trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. Planning for the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically. When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce? Just imagine where you would be now, if you had been connected to the internet from the very start!" After a moment of thought, the tomato millionaire replied, "Why, of course! I would be a floor cleaner at Microsoft!" Moral of this story: 1. The Internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life. 2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire. 3. Since you got this story via the internet, you're probably closer to becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire. 4. If you do have a computer and e-mail, you have already been taken to the cleaners by Microsoft. lmao  more

Resolved Question: Search engine optimization question?

I am planning on starting up an e-commerce business with a Yahoo shop and I am currently looking at ways to optimize for number one spots within certain search terms. The problem I am running into is their seems to be so many black hat techniques out there that it is sometimes hard to recognize genuine honest ways to rank higher within a search engine. I recently watched a video course by Stompernet that was shot around 2005 and they could not promote reciprocal linking enough. They were adamant that this is the number one thing you can do to boost your PageRank and nothing else comes close. Well as I said this was shot in 2005 and three years is a long time in Google's algorithm so does reciprocal linking still hold the key to search engine position or is there something new. If you could point me in the direction of where to find solid honest white hat PROVEN techniques to rank better in search engines I would be very grateful.  more

Resolved Question: What is the best web hosting site for the money?

I can't afford spending a ton of money on my business website. I'm thinking more along the lines of $100, or a small monthly fee, say $10. (I don't plan on any e-commerce.) Just a nice, well-designed, professional site, with NO ads. I already have a domain name through GoDaddy. Should I just use them? I don't have any "coding" knowledge, nor the time to sit down and design it myself. It's going to take long enough coming up with the content. I will need templates and just feed the information into them. Thanks in advance for your help!!!  more

Resolved Question: Should Americans Boycott McDonald's?

Dobbs: Well, we know that business people all across the country, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce certainly representing as it does big business, I'm sure that they want to encourage all employers to use E-Verify, because it's 99.5 percent effective and would stop so much of our illegal immigration crisis in this country. I can't imagine that McDonald's would hesitate now, particularly that they have run across this problem to demand that franchise owners use E- Verify and as a matter of policy, for example like AMC Theaters make certain of the residency and immigration status of their employees. Wian: You would think so, Lou, but all along, the business lobby, the courts, amnesty advocates, they're the ones who have been standing up and blocking these efforts by the Department of Homeland Security modest though that they may be at this time to actually enforce the law and hold employers accountable for knowingly and egregiously hiring illegal aliens and even going so far as in this case to help them get phony documents. [...] Dobbs: The fast food industry certainly backs so-called comprehensive immigration reform, which would have given amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. McDonald's is among the companies backing that plan and it's not certainly the only fast food chain supporting amnesty, the quote, "Essential Worker Immigration Coalition", end quote, is a group of trade associations strongly supporting comprehensive immigration reform legislation.  more

Resolved Question: kamal karna roy, a new vision in democracy of equities: why ?

My Presidential Endorsement: Feb 8th 2008 5:22PM They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So why is it the American people allow our politicians to do the same things over and over and we believe them and expect results different from previous elections ? I've looked at the websites of current and previous candidates to get an understanding of their platforms. They all have positions, some of which I agree with , some of which I don't. But there is one thing that is missing from each and everyone of them, any manner of implementation. Health care, spending cuts, retaining or repealing tax cuts, keeping or removing troops, the soundbites with pretty numbers never end. Not a single candidate provides details on how exactly they are going to accomplish anything. Don't they realize that economists exists to make lottery ticket buyers look smart, not presidential candidates ? It reminds me of business plans I get from kids who tell me about their vision and project all kinds of numbers leading to grand results. They can site historical facts and figures, but when it comes time to get into details of exactly how they are going to execute on their plans, the response is basically that they will figure it out as they go. I wouldn't invest in a business that is winging it any more than I want to vote for a presidential candidate that is winging it. Unfortunately , they are all winging it. i have no question that they have every detail about how to spend their campaign contributions on advertising planned out. I have yet to see details on how they plan to accomplish all their great promises they are making to voters. That scares me. It also scares me that despite claims of not being an "insider" or wanting a different vision for America, every remaining candidate spends more energy campaigning to their party than to the issues. I got sick watching Clinton and Barack argue about who was less of a "Reaganite" during one of their few lively debate exchanges. I actually started to get a little bit excited about McCain. Then he went on the warpath to "mend his riff" with the Republican Party. I can only speak for myself, but the fact that he had a "riff" with the Republicans is exactly why i started to get excited about him. No, he hadn't presented any more details on his plans than any other candidate, but there was a glimmer of hope that he was a candidate that thought for himself. (And before all the comments start, Ron Paul is the worse of all the candidates when it comes to detailing how he would execute on his promises. Just saying you are going to cut and eliminate everything doesn't mean you know how to do it and/or could get it done.) So here we are, our country has the same problem we have every four years, our remaining candidates are politicians. They know how to spend other people's money. They know how to assign responsibility to someone else. They know how to beg for other people's money. They know how to campaign, schmooze and kiss babies. They have no earthly idea how to accomplish any of their promises. So here is my hope. My hope is that the entire primary process is just the preseason. That its nothing more than an expensive introduction to the Republican and Democratic candidates and once they have picked their winner, a wealthy individual will nominate them self to compete with the 2 parties and run for President. Are you listening Mayor Bloomberg ? For less than the cost of opening a tent pole movie, you can change the status quo . I'm not saying that I'm going to vote for you yet. As I said above, the devil is in the details. But, I'm betting that unlike the current choices, you recognize the difference between politics and results. PermalinkEmail thisLinking BlogsComments [87] Recent Posts The Internet is Officially Dead & Boring - Its the economy stupid ! (2/10/2008) My Presidential Endorsement: (2/08/2008) Reader Comments (Page 5) 81. Dear Mr. Cuban, I agree with you about Mayor Bloomberg. Now, can you use your celebrity to give him a push. I've signed the petition to draft him, which is purely symbolic. Perhaps someone in your position can explain to him just how many people are out here hoping he'll run. This is NOT my first election and I'm no longer interested in voting for the lesser of all the evils. Thanks. Posted at 12:34PM on Feb 12th 2008 by Steve Sparks 82. Maybe you should have Ron Paul on HDNet so he could detail how he would do what he wants to do. Posted at 1:08PM on Feb 12th 2008 by penxv 83. Ron Paul is the best of all the candidates when it comes to how to get the government out of our way so we can be a more productive and free country. Does not your success story include initial failures where the "how" was not understood or executed correctly? Having the right "what" will cover the "how" mistakes much better than the opposite. Posted at 4:33PM on Feb 12th 2008 by Ken Bacon 84. Interesting thoughts on our country's political process. Until changed, this is how it works here. If things worked right, you would pick a wildly rich business person, the next guy would pick the Pope and still another would pick a skin-head. What say everyone's name go into a hat and a drunk monkey pick it? Odds are it would turn out to be an average working stiff trying to get ahead while the taxes on his efforts pile up by the boatload - someone who might appreciate how much it costs to fly Air Force One. Resolved Question: Which is the best for implementation of a database driven website ? php5 or ASP.NET ?

I ask because I'm building a powerful robust e-commerce site for a friend who runs a medium sized business (which will become global in a decades time) , and instead of forking out $$$ on a web developer, hes asked me to plan, build and maintain it for him - i get paid of course. I love both web technologies, yet I struggle to come to terms with being able to choose one over the other, there are so many joyful things you can do in php , likewise, same applies with microsofts .net framework. i dont know the pros and cons of either, and their advantages over each other, but the site im building will sell ornaments, statuettes, african tribal masks, oriental decor, authentic persian rugs, and a lot of cool stuff dealing with the occult. I have a SNEAKY feeling ASP.NET is the route to go, as microsoft heavily supports it and microsoft aint going no where for a while. which should i choose to build this site ?  more

Resolved Question: What's a good web host provider?

I would like to create a website- I'm not sure what it will be on so far (either a personal About Me sort of a thing or on a specific hobby or both) but I would also like to possibly sell things on it via Paypal later. What would be a good starter web host provider? And by selling some things, would that be counted as a small e-commerce business? I see there are many different types of providers available, based on what I plan to do with the site, and I am confused by it all. Part II of my question is, is it easier (cheaper) to sell things through ebay or by selling creating your own web site? What I would be selling are postage stamps I have collected over the past 10+ years which I guess I've outgrown and used CDs, DVDs, etc. I've tried listing them on e-bay, but they're not doing too well and ebay charges outrageous listing fees whether or not they sell. Thanks a lot. Something that would be really helpful would be if you could add a link to your site (nothing inappropriate please) you use or know of someone who uses your suggested provider to give me some ideas and the its functions in the works.  more

Resolved Question: What are some really effective ways to market my small home-based business?

I have a home-based business and provide Administrative, Clerical and Computer Training services to businesses. I will also be offering Computer Training services to individuals as well. Last week, I started by creating a nice full-color flier (to advertise the Administrative and Clerical side of my business) and e-mailing it to a list of over 300 people. I got the company names and e-mail addresses from the local Chamber of Commerce directory. I received a couple of phone calls, but no business has came out of it yet. This week I am planning to distribute full-color fliers (to advertise the Computer Training side of my business). I am going to put them in page protectors and tape them to the sides of the mailboxes on our subdivision. We live in a house and have 2 to 3 mailbox receptacles per street. I want to really get my company name out there. Do you know of any really effective ways to market my small home-based business?  more

Resolved Question: How much privacy are Americans willing to give up?

Print E-mail story Most e-mailed Change text size Is Google's data grinder dangerous? It wants to know more about us than we know ourselves. By Andrew Keen, ANDREW KEEN is the author of "The Cult of the Amateur." ak@aftertv.com. July 12, 2007 WHAT DOES Google want? Having successfully become our personal librarian, Google now wants to be our personal oracle. It wants to learn all about us, know us better than we know ourselves, to transform itself from a search engine into a psychoanalyst's couch or a priest's confessional. Google's search engine is the best place to learn what Google wants. Type "Eric Schmidt London May 22" into Google, and you can read about a May interview the Google chief executive gave to journalists in London. Here is how he described what he hoped the search engine would look like in five years: "The goal is to enable Google users to be able to ask the question such as 'What shall I do tomorrow?' And 'What job shall I take?' " Schmidt's goal is not inconsiderable: By 2012, he wants Google to be able to tell all of us what we want. This technology, what Google co-founder Larry Page calls the "perfect search engine," might not only replace our shrinks but also all those marketing professionals whose livelihoods are based on predicting — or guessing — consumer desires. Schmidt acknowledges that Google is still far from this goal. As he told the London journalists: "We cannot even answer the most basic questions because we don't know enough about you. That is the most important aspect of Google's expansion." So where is Google expanding? How is it planning to know more about us? Many — if not most — users don't read the user agreement and thus aren't aware that Google already stores every query we type in. The next stage is a personalized Web service called iGoogle. Schmidt, who perhaps not coincidentally sits on the board of Apple, regards its success as the key to knowing us better than we know ourselves. iGoogle is growing into a tightly-knit suite of services — personalized homepage, search engine, blog, e-mail system, mini-program gadgets, Web-browsing history, etc. — that together will create the world's most intimate information database. On iGoogle, we all get to aggregate our lives, consciously or not, so artificially intelligent software can sort out our desires. It will piece together our recent blog posts, where we've been online, our e-commerce history and cultural interests. It will amass so much information about each of us that eventually it will be able to logically determine what we want to do tomorrow and what job we want. The real question, of course, is whether what Google wants is what we want too. Do we really want Google digesting so much intimate data about us? Could iGoogle actually be a remix of "1984's" Room 101 — that Orwellian dystopia in which our most secret desires and most repressed fears are revealed? Any comparison with 20th century, top-down totalitarianism is, perhaps, a little fanciful. After all, nobody can force us to use iGoogle. And — in contrast to Yahoo and Microsoft (which have no limits on how long they hang on to our personal data) — Google has committed to retaining data for only 18 months. Still, if iGoogle turns out to be half as wise about each of us as Schmidt predicts, then this artificial intelligence will challenge traditional privacy rights as well as provide us with an excuse to deny responsibility for our own actions. What happens, for example, when the government demands access to our iGoogle records? And will we be able to sue iGoogle if it advises us to make an unwise career decision? Schmidt, I suspect, would like us to imagine Google as a public service, thereby affirming the company's "do no evil" credo. But Google is not our friend. Schmidt's iGoogle vision of the future is not altruistic, and his company is not a nonprofit group dedicated to the realization of human self-understanding. Worth more than $150 billion on the public market, Google is by far the dominant Internet advertising outlet — according to Nielsen ratings, it reaches about 70% of the global Internet audience. Just in the first quarter of 2007, Google's revenue from its online properties was up 76% from the previous year. Personal data are Google's most valuable currency, its crown jewels. The more Google knows our desires, the more targeted advertising it can serve up to us and the more revenue it can extract from these advertisers. What does Google really want? Google wants to dominate. Its proposed $3.1-billion acquisition of DoubleClick threatens to make the company utterly dominant in the online advertising business. The $1.65-billion acquisition of YouTube last year made it by far the dominant player in the online video market. And, with a personalized service like iGoogle, the company is seeking to become the algorithmic monopolist of our online behavior. So when Eric Schmidt says Google wants to know us better than we know ourselves, he is talking to his shareholders rather than us. As a Silicon Valley old-timer, trust me on this one. I know Google better than it knows itself.  more

Resolved Question: What should Freedom Lovers Do ??

How can one combine professional life with the advancement of liberty? Of course it is presumptuous to offer a definitive answer since all jobs and careers in the market economy are subject to the forces of the division of labor. Because a person focuses on one task doesn't mean that he or she isn't great at many tasks; it means only that the highest productive gains for everyone come from dividing tasks up among many people of a wide range of talents. So it is with the freedom movement. The more of us there are, the more we do well to specialize, to cooperate through exchange, to boost our impact by dividing the labor. There is no way to know in advance what is right for any person in particular. There are so many wonderful paths from which to choose (and which I will discuss below). But this much we can know. The usual answer—go into government—is wrongheaded. Too many good minds have been corrupted and lost by following this fateful course. If often happens that an ideological movement will make great strides through education and organization and cultural influence, only to take the illogical leap of believing that politics and political influence, which usually means taking jobs within the bureaucracy, is the next rung on the ladder to success. This is like trying to fight a fire with matches and gasoline. This is what happened to the Christian right in the 1980s. They got involved in politics in order to throw off the yoke of the state. Twenty years later, many of these people are working in the Department of Education or for the White House, doing the prep work to amend the Constitution or invade some foreign country. This is a disastrous waste of intellectual capital. It is particularly important that believers in liberty not take this course. Government work has been the chosen career path of socialists, social reformers, and Keynesians for at least a century. It is the natural home to them because their ambition is to control society through government. It works for them but it does not work for us. In the first half of the 20th century, libertarians knew how to oppose statism. They went into business and journalism. They wrote books. They agitated within the cultural arena. They developed fortunes to help fund newspapers, schools, foundations, and public education organizations. They expanded their commercial ventures to serve as a bulwark against central planning. They became teachers and, when possible, professors. They cultivated wonderful families and focused on the education of their children. It is a long struggle but it is the way the struggle for liberty has always taken place. But somewhere along the way, some people, enticed by the prospect of a fast track to reform, rethought this idea. Perhaps we should try the same technique that the left did. We should get our people in power and displace their people, and then we can bring about change toward liberty. In fact, isn't this the most important goal of all? So long as the left controls the state, it will expand in ways that are incompatible with freedom. We need to take back the state. So goes the logic. What is wrong with it? The state's only function is as an apparatus of coercion and compulsion. That is its distinguishing mark. It is what makes the state the state. To the same extent that the state responds well to arguments that it should be larger and more powerful, it is institutionally hostile to anyone who says that it should be less powerful and less coercive. That is not to say that some work from the "inside" cannot do some good, some of the time. But it is far more likely that the state will convert the libertarian than for the libertarian to convert the state. We've all seen this a thousand times. It rarely takes more than a few months for a libertarian intellectual headed for the Beltway to "mature" and realize that his or her old ideals were rather childish and insufficiently real world. A politician promising to defang Washington later becomes the leading expert in applying tooth enamel. Once that fateful step is taken, there are no limits. I know a bureaucrat who helped run martial law in Iraq who once swore fidelity to Rothbardian political economy. The reason has to do with ambition, which is not normally a bad impulse. The culture of Washington, however, requires that ambition work itself out by paying maximum deference to the powers that be. At first, this is easy to justify: how else can the state be converted except by being friendly to it? The state is our enemy, but for now, we must pretend to be its pal. In time, the dreams are displaced by the daily need to curry favor. Eventually the person becomes precisely the kind of person he or she once despised. (For Lord of the Rings fans, it's like being asked to carry the ring for a while; you don't want to give it up.) I've known people who have gone this route and one day took an honest look in the mirror, and didn't like what they saw. They have said to me that they were mistaken to think it could work. They didn't recognize the subtle ways in which they themselves were being drawn in. They recognize the futility of politely asking the state, day after day, to permit a bit more liberty here and there. Ultimately you must frame your arguments in terms of what is good for the state, and the reality is that liberty is not usually good for the state. Hence, the rhetoric and finally the goal begin to change. The state is open to persuasion, to be sure, but it usually acts out of fear, not friendship. If the bureaucrats and politicians fear backlash, they will not increase taxes or regulations. If they sense a high enough degree of public outrage, they will even repeal controls and programs. An example is the end of alcohol prohibition or the repeal of the 55 mph speed limit. These were pulled back because politicians and bureaucrats sensed too high a cost from continued enforcement. The problem of strategy was something that fascinated Murray Rothbard, who wrote several important articles on the need for never compromising the long-run goal for short-term gain through the political process. That doesn't mean we should not welcome a 1 percent tax cut or repeal a section of some law. But we should never allow ourselves to be sucked into the trade-off racket: e.g., repeal this bad tax to impose this better tax. That would be using a means (a tax) that contradicts the goal (elimination of taxation). The Rothbardian approach to a pro-freedom strategy comes down to the following four affirmations: 1) the victory of liberty is the highest political end; 2) the proper groundwork for this goal is a moral passion for justice; 3) the end should be pursued by the speediest and most efficacious possible means; and 4) the means taken must never contradict the goal—"whether by advocating gradualism, by employing or advocating any aggression against liberty, by advocating planned programs, by failing to seize any opportunities to reduce State power, or by ever increasing it in any area." Libertarians are not the first people who have confronted the question of strategy for social advance and cultural and political change. After the Civil War, a large part of the population of the South, namely former slaves, found themselves in a perilous situation. They had a crying need to advance socially within society, but lacked education, skill, and capital. They also bore the burden of pushing social change that permitted them to be regarded as full citizens who made the most of their new freedom. In many ways, they found themselves in a position somewhat like new immigrants but with an additional burden of throwing off an old social status for a new one. The Reconstruction period of Union-run martial law invited many blacks to participate in politics as a primary goal. This proved to be a terrible temptation for many, as the former Virginia slave Booker T. Washington said. "During the whole of the Reconstruction period our people throughout the South looked to the Federal Government for everything, very much as a child looks to its mother." He rejected this political model because "the general political agitation drew the attention of our people away from the more fundamental matters of perfecting themselves in the industries at their doors and in securing property." Washington wrote that "the temptations to enter political life were so alluring that I came very near yielding to them at one time" but he resisted this in favor of "the laying of the foundation of the race through a generous education of the hand, head and heart." Later when he visited DC, he knew that he had been right. "A large proportion of these people had been drawn to Washington because they felt that they could lead a life of ease there," he wrote. "Others had secured minor government positions, and still another large class was there in the hope of securing Federal positions." As it was in the 1870s it is today. The state chews up and either eats or spits out those with a passion for liberty. The extent to which W.E.B DuBois's Marxian push for political agitation has prevailed over Washington's push for commercial advance has been tragic for black Americans and for the whole of American society. Many obtained political power, but not liberty classically understood. We can learn from this. The thousands of young people who are discovering the ideas of liberty for the first time ought to stay away from the Beltway and all its allures. Instead, they should pursue their love and passion through arts, commerce, education, and even the ministry. These are fields that offer genuine promise with a high return. When a libertarian tells me that he is doing some good as a procurement officer at HUD, I don't doubt his word. But how much more would he do by quitting his job and writing an expose on the entire bureaucratic racket? One well-placed blast against such an agency can bring about more reform, and do more good, than decades of attempted subversion from within. Are there politicians who do some good? Certainly, and the name Ron Paul is the first that comes to mind. But the good he does is not as a legislator as such but as an educator with a prominent platform from which to speak. Every no vote is a lesson to the multitudes. We need more Ron Pauls. But Ron is the first to say that, more importantly, we need more professors, business owners, fathers and mothers, religious leaders, and entrepreneurs. The party of liberty loves commerce and culture, not the state. Commerce and culture is our home and our launching ground for social reform and revolution  more

Resolved Question: Starting life over at 56. Product dilemma, home biz. Pros, coaches, partners invited. Need positive cash flow.

The most productive years of my adult life have been lost to mental illness and learning disabilities. This has received very intense treatment and follow-up. I have busted my axx over 20 years to get back on my own two mental feet; find work and move on with what's left of my time with my wife and three sons, ages 19 - 26. But until recently my physical self lost out. Psychologically, I feel ready to rejoin society and 'puff and pant' my way to a new career. Sadly, my body will not cooperate...too many personal needs for a reasonable employer to accommodate OJT. I have a BS and MBA (70s). But much job loss and unemployment periods. I've put together a dynamite one-page resume, creatively enhanced but truthful. My job coach is cluelass. Admittedly, I have a nasty, biting personality that I have not totally controlled. So now what? I have become well versed in online home business methods. Already had my first setback in e-commerce after 3 years of planning. Not out yet! Ideas??  more
