Helping businesses and consumers

Businesses from elsewhere that operate in the state without proper registration are breaking the law, and state officials were right to tout their earnings from a recent crackdown.

More than $1 million was recovered from companies that run the gamut from mom-and-pop stores to multinational conglomerates. As officials noted, if out-of-state businesses don't follow regulations concerning registration, they put local companies at a disadvantage. Ensuring that all companies register before doing business in Connecticut helps authorities enforce regulations on workplace safety, wages, environmental protection and other issues.

It can also save time and effort by helping consumers and state officials hold the companies accountable for problems without having to sue in other states. These are regulations by which state companies need to abide, so it only makes sense that their out-of-state competitors must as well. more

US indigenous business model to be tried here

A 35-YEAR-OLD US model for developing African-American and Native American businesses is being considered by the Federal Government as an answer to the economic disadvantage of indigenous Australians.

The US National Minority Supplier Development Council accredits minority-owned businesses and links them with corporations such as Cisco, IBM and GlaxoSmithKline.

In 2006, the council's member companies bought more than $US100 billion ($104 billion) of goods and services from businesses owned by African Americans, Native Americans and other minorities.

The concept has spread to Canada, where in four years it has delivered $C200 million ($206 million) worth of business to minorities, and to Britain, where it is being used to foster social inclusion.

The US council is now helping Brazil, China and South Africa set up similar systems, but it is particularly interested in indigenous Australia. more

Climate change awareness yet to translate into action

MUMBAI: Climate change is an important issue for most Indian businesses, but more than half of the firms surveyed in a report on the matter said they do not have a clear strategy in place to tackle the challenge. Despite awareness, among 83% of the business leaders that consulting major KPMG spoke to, only 21% said they have measured carbon footprints. Measuring footprints is one of the strategies used to deal with the issue.

The report says that the global market for low carbon energy efficient technologies will be $3 trillion by 2050. This could also open up avenues of commercial interest for various industries such as renewable energy, waste management and water treatment. These industries will be worth $700 billion globally by 2010, on par with the value of the global aerospace industry. more

Open Question: Can I advertise on Yahoo without having a online website?

I want to advertise something that I'm selling. However, I failed two times already trying to do an online business. No one came to it, and it was even when I did marketing searches for it. I feel more comfortable doing things the old fashioned way. Putting it in a newspaper ad, putting my business address and having them call me or write for the product and I'd take orders through a more formal method than online. Anyway, can you advertise on Yahoo without having a website or without doing online transactions(E-Commerce). Plus, if I did go back to trying to work online, would I need a business license, and a Employer Identification number, or does Yahoo Business supply all that within signing up and registering?  more

Hi Guys, My name is Hardik. I m introvert type of personality. i know this question has been answered before on yahoo, but my question is on different lines. Now I have done my Graduation in Commerce and obviously commerce business requires a lot of talking. so My parents and other peers Keep on pressuring me that In order to succeed in commerce I need to be do a lot of talking and should be outgoing instead of being in a shell or i will get eaten up in this big bad world of commerce. Now when I try to be Extrovert and try to talk and make others laugh or smile, other people just dont want to accept that. even the close ones like my cousin es and brothers and sisters. when I say a genuinely good one liner, instead of laughing. they will just repeat my lines with some added words which takes a toll on my mind Are they really hating the fact that I m trying to be what I M Not? Should I really Change Myself to Extrovert if People find it so hard to accept me? and Does Changing from Introvert to extrovert mean that person is feeling low about him being an Introvert? Time will tell, i still have doubts  more

Resolved Question: Does the Shadow Govt really exist? Is this article valid? What are your opinions?

A friend sent me this article and I would like your opinions of it. It's long so it may only be for those who are interested in the ways that Bush enacts laws WITHOUT Congress. Why are the American people NEVER informed of these actions, like NAU? Please, your comments: THE NEW WORLD DISORDER Documents disclose 'shadow government' Indicate U.S. far advanced in constructing bureaucracy united with Mexico, Canada © 2006 WorldNetDaily.com Government documents released by a Freedom of Information Act request reveal the Bush administration is running a "shadow government" with Mexico and Canada in which the U.S. is crafting a broad range of policy in conjunction with its neighbors to the north and south, asserts WND columnist and author Jerome R. Corsi. The documents, a total of about 1,000 pages, are among the first to be released to Corsi through his FOIA request to the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, or SPP, which describes itself as an initiative "to increase security and to enhance prosperity among the three countries through greater cooperation." "The documents clearly reveal that SPP, working within the U.S. Department of Commerce, is far advanced in putting together a new regional infrastructure, creating a 'shadow' trilateral bureaucracy with Mexico and Canada that is aggressively rewriting a wide range of U.S. administrative law, all without congressional oversight or public disclosure," Corsi said. Among the initial discoveries, said Corsi, is the existence of an internal Intranet website that never has been revealed to Congress or the public. "This private internal website," he claims, "undoubtedly contains a wealth of documentation that the FOIA request has so far intentionally excluded." Corsi told WND the documents reveal hundreds of internal meetings, memoranda of understanding and other referenced agreements that have not been disclosed. "We have here the beginnings of a whitewash," he said, "in which SPP evidently thinks the public will be hoodwinked by a 'Myths vs. Facts' document posted for public relations purposes on their public website." Among the documents is an organizational chart accompanied by a listing of trilateral Mexican, Canadian and U.S. administrative officers who report on multiple cabinet level "working groups." The government watchdog Judicial Watch announced today it has received some of the same documents, including the organizational chart, which can be seen in this pdf file, on page seven. "There is no specific authorization for this massive administrative-branch integration with Mexico and Canada other than what amounts to a press conference jointly issued by President Bush, Mexico's President Vicente Fox, and Canada's then-Prime Minister Paul Martin on March 23, 2005, at the end of their summit in Waco, Texas," Corsi said. Corsi added that even the "Myth vs. Facts" blurb on the SPP.gov website admits the SPP is neither a treaty nor a law. "The Bush administration is trying to create the infrastructure of a new regional North American government in stealth fashion, under the radar and out of public view," Corsi claims. "Where is Congress, asleep at the wheel?" The SPP organizational chart Corsi obtained shows 13 working groups covering a wide range of public policy issues, including Manufactured Goods; Energy, Food & Agriculture; Rules of Origin' Health; E-Commerce; Transportation; Environment; Financial Services; Business Facilitation; External Threats to North America; Streamlined & Secured Shared Borders; and Prevention/Response within North America. U.S. administrative-branch officers participating in these working groups are drawn from the U.S. departments of State, Homeland Security, Commerce, Treasury, Agriculture, Transportation, Energy, Health and Human Services, and the office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The released documents affirm that counterparts from official governmental agencies in Mexico and Canada are combined with the U.S. administrative branch to form new trilateral "working groups" that actively rewrite U.S. administrative law to "harmonize" or "integrate" with administrative law in Mexico and Canada. "What we have here amounts to an administrative coup d'etat," Corsi told WND. "Where does the Bush administration get the congressional authorization to invite two foreign nations to the table to rewrite U.S. law?"  more

Resolved Question: An interesting story?

Tomato Millionaire - Joke An unemployed man goes to apply for a job with Microsoft as a janitor. The manager there arranges for him to take an aptitude test (Section: Floors, sweeping and cleaning). After the test, the manager says, "You will be employed at minimum wage, $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send you a form to complete and tell you where to report for work on your first day. Taken aback, the man protests that he has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the MS manager replies, "Well, then, that means that you virtually don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed. Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having only $10 in his wallet, he decides to buy a 25 lb flat of tomatoes at the supermarket. Within less than 2 hours, he sells all the tomatoes individually at 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on him that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Getting up early every day and going to bed late, he multiplies his profits quickly. After a short time he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again so that he can buy a pickuptruck to support his expanding business. By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pickup trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. Planning for the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically. When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce? Just imagine where you would be now, if you had been connected to the internet from the very start!" After a moment of thought, the tomato millionaire replied, "Why, of course! I would be a floor cleaner at Microsoft!" Moral of this story: 1. The Internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life. 2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire. 3. Since you got this story via the internet, you're probably closer to becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire. 4. If you do have a computer and e-mail, you have already been taken to the cleaners by Microsoft. lmao  more

I will be designing web pages well into the future, so I am looking for something that will cover these issues (i.e sessions, upload security, optimization) in detail and provide me with a solid first step to becoming a pro at this stuff. (I have some programming background, so it doesn't need to be a "for dummies" sort of thing).  more

Voting Question: What is the best state to start an LLC in?

My friends and I want to start an LLC in the US. We are all Canadian. I would like to know which is the best state to start the LLC? The LLC is for an online / e-commerce business so my understanding is that it doesn't matter which state we do it in. I was going to do it in California, however I heard that you have to pay a minimum tax of $800 in CA for an LLC, even if you make no money!! Does anyone recommend a state which does not have such poor inducements?  more

Resolved Question: How can I file a complaint against a business supported by Yahoo E-commerce?

I need to file a complaint against a business that is associated with Yahoo E-commerce. I paid a vendor in January 2008 (stupidly) for centerpieces for my wedding in September 2008. After receiving the run-around on my shipping dates for eight months, I was told that my centerpieces were not coming - FOUR days before my wedding. Now after the fact I am that I am due a refund (obviously) but am again getting the run-around on when that refund will be sent to me! This is a terrible way to do business and I think it is really awful that Yahoo supports businesses like this one. What do I do about getting this complaint heard by Yahoo Business? I believe that this business' membership should be terminated. I paid in January but was not due to get my centerpieces until April (what the vendor told me)...then May, then June, then July, then next week, then next week - until the week of my wedding I was told they were not coming. That is why I am filing now...I wasn't owed anything until I didn't receive my merchandise. I am currently in the process of taking the steps to sue the business for the money owed - but I wanted to be sure that they cannot continue to do this to people. I paid through PayPal.  more

Voting Question: Can you use a different merchant account in Quickbooks?

We currently use three merchant accounts at our business: one for Quickbooks, one for the boss' telephone orders, and one for our e-commerce website. We are looking at consolidating to one, but from what I've heard, you can only use Intuits merchant account in Quickbooks. Is that true? or can you change the information and accept credit cards through a different company? Thanks! I am aware you can import outside merchant information, what I need to do is process credit cards with Quickbooks. I need to know if Quickbooks ONLY accepts their merchant accounts or if I can use a different one, such as Authorize.net...  more

Hi I have designed an e-commerce website. Right now tho, it has no way of functioning as one - it is just the pages. (I code my own html - and a bit with dreamweaver cs3). What is needed to make it work so customers can securely purchase goods on my site? If i sign up for the free thing with payal for businesses, is that enough to make sales and have them be secure as well? Do i need to go and see a webhost about 'shopping carts', or just use this paypal thing? Thankyou! (sorry I am completely new to e-commerce as you can probably tell) So any help at all, any suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks again AJ  more

Voting Question: Rate this computer joke please?

Janitor or Millionaire An unemployed man goes to apply for a job with Microsoft as a janitor. After a short time he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again so that he can buy a pick-up truck to support his expanding business. By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pick-up trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. 3. Since you got this story via e-mail, you're probably closer to becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire. 4. If you do have a computer and e-mail, you have already been taken to the cleaners by Microsoft. found at www.ticklemewithjokes.com  more

Resolved Question: What job title should I give my assistant?

I have started an e-commerce business for which I call myself founder/owner. My "right hand" assistant will be investing in my company and will continue to be my assistant - although I hate that word. What's a great job title for an investor/executive assistant extraordinaire? This doesn't have to do with a nail salon to answer the question. As an investor and assistant, I thought perhaps I could give her a title more interesting than Admin Assist. Unfortunately, although Executive Assistant describes her position well, to many, I fear it translates as =secretary/admin and she is a bit more than that.  more
