Hershey 2Q profit, sales up after price increase

Company President and Chief Executive David J. West said a new marketing plan, marked by a 30 percent increase in spending, is driving the company's better performance in the relatively slow-growing, but dominant U.S. candy market.

"We're not satisfied with where we are, but we're pleased that we're starting to get some traction," West told analysts on a conference call.

Hershey's recent market share losses are flattening out, its high-end Bliss bar is the best-selling new product in the chocolate sector and the company is getting bang for its new marketing bucks, West said.

UBS analyst David S. Palmer said Hershey shares could rise in the coming months, considering it set a lowered threshold for success, commodity prices are beginning to ease and high-margin Bliss and Starbucks products are padding the bottom line. more

BB&T Insurance buys Myrtle Beach agency The Business Journal of

BB&T's insurance arm, like the company's retail banking operation, is bulking up at the beach.

BB&T (NYSE: BBT) said Wednesday that BB&T Insurance, which is based in Raleigh, has bought the Puckett, Scheetz & Hogan insurance agency of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The purchase gives BB&T, the Winston-Salem bank, the largest insurance market share in greater Myrtle Beach, a statement says. BB&T is also the No. 1 retail bank in the area, the company says, having garnered that designation during 2007.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in early August.

"South Carolina's Grand Strand is a thriving area. To have the No. 1 market share in both banking and now, insurance, is another great step forward for BB&T," BB&T Insurance CEO Wade Reece said in a statement. more
