First Rebuilt Home Opens

Running Springs residents Gary and Debbie Harper greeted guests, thanked God and many local residents and businesses for their help and spent the first night in their new, rebuilt home. The celebration was truly that—a happy occasion that attracted about 60 people from Rebuilding Mountain Hearts and Lives, Rim Lumber, the American Red Cross, Rim Family Services, San Bernardino County Building and Safety, print and television news media, the Running Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mountain Aid Project and many more local and county agencies.Pastor Mack Braden from Community Baptist Church in Lake Arrowhead led everyone in a brief prayer to bless the home and the Harpers.Last October, the Running Springs home on Chicago Drive was, along with many neighbors, gutted when the Slide Fire roared into the neighborhood and destroyed everything in its path. Not only did the Harpers lose their home in the fire, but Gary Harper, a construction company owner, had all his tools stolen last February, dealing the couple one more huge blow. When Pat McCumber, general manager of Rim Forest Lumber, read about the theft he knew he needed to do something. more

Businesses to feel the burn as energy prices soar

UK businesses will face a trying time as energy bills continue to rise, MPs have warned. The Business and Enterprise Select Committee fears thousands of jobs in manufacturing could go as a result of energy prices that are high compared to those in the rest of Europe. It called for action to address problems in the energy sector, following the announcement at the start of the year of large price rises by the "big six" of British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy. However, the committee found no evidence of the companies working together to artificially keep prices high, despite the limited price difference across the suppliers. The report, published just days after EDF Energy became the first supplier to announce its summer price hikes, also warns that millions of households will face severe consequences. more
