Naperville entrepreneur thrives in tough economy with 10 stores

In an uncertain retail climate Elaine Krieger of Naperville has thrived with 10 franchises in the resale clothing business for children, teenagers and mature women that have reached revenues of $9 million.But she got off to a difficult start 15 years ago after she and her husband settled in Naperville and she opened a Once Upon A Child store for resale clothing following 21 years in the corporate world.That second career, Krieger says, made her appreciate that resale stores operate quite differently from the way most might think. One key difference is that her stores pay cash immediately for quality clothing in good condition. Some other resale stores take clothes on consignment and pay only when the items are sold.Additionally, much of the merchandise originates from better specialty or department stores. more

Entrepreneur incubator cuts staff by 30 percent

During her 22-year tenure, she oversaw CED's growth into the nation's largest support group for entrepreneurs.The nonprofit added staff, conferences and other services as the technology and biotechnology sectors expanded in the Triangle, and CED sought to broaden its appeal.Amid the expansion, some in the entrepreneurial community worried that the range of programs diluted CED's mission. Some donors have questioned whether their money is being used in the most effective ways.Wiehe stressed that CED is not in trouble and changes are not a reflection on Doss' leadership."CED means a lot of things to a lot of people," he said. "Organizations, as they've been around for a while, sometimes you need to take a fresh look at what's being done."The job cuts, in addition to lowering expenses, should help bring a bit more transparency to CED's operations, Wiehe said. more

But Carlyle, a Queen Anne resident and wireless entrepreneur, wasn't buying it. He had his sight set on a seat in the state House of Representatives, specifically the one filled for the last 35 years by retiring Democratic Rep. Helen Sommers.

Now, with the state's top-two primary likely to advance two Democratic candidates from the 36th District, Carlyle could be locked in a close, intraparty battle for months before November's general election.

Up until this point, politics has mostly been a hobby for Carlyle, who makes a living working with tech startups around the country. Although an aggressive regimen of doorbell-ringing and sign-waving has kept him busy this summer, he says serving in the part-time Legislature will allow him to remain a family man and entrepreneur -- parts of an identity he doesn't want to lose. more
