Forex, import and export South African businesses have been busy in recent years sending goods back and forth across our borders. Steven Matthews, the chief executive officer of FNB International Banking, says there has been a huge growth in imports. They grew 33 percent in 2005/6, while exports expanded 25 percent in the same period. Generally, Matthews says, it is not difficult to do business in other countries when it comes to making and receiving payments. "South Africa�s banking environment is considered First World. It is very sophisticated," he says. With Swift, an international payment system, it is relatively easy to make payments to a business in another country. more

Mirvac chief quits after downgrade

"It was actually around completing our strategic review of the business, which we presented to the board last week. Myself and Greg have been intimately involved in the strategic review for Mirvac, and with that now in its final form the timing was right for Greg."

He said his intimate knowledge of the review and his close work with Mr Paramor over the years meant a lengthy handover was not needed.

"We are well placed, with over $1 billion in undrawn facilities," he said.

"We are getting our business back to basics and simplifying our business model."

Mr Paramor and Mr Collishaw joined Mirvac in 2005 via its acquisition of James Fielding Group, with Mr Paramor becoming chief executive.

Last week, Mr Paramor announced that profit would fall 24% this financial year, while distributions to investors would be slashed by 39% in 2008-09 to a forecast payout level of 20¢ a unit, down from this year's distribution of 32.9¢ a unit. more

Businesses travellers trading down at hotels

Budget hotel chain Premier Inn has seen substantial growth in corporate bookings, suggesting that business travellers are trading-down as the UK economy falters.

The group, which is owned by Whitbread, claimed sales through its Business Account Card increased 48% in June and 337 new business customers signed up to the scheme.

The company also said 1,238 new businesses, mainly from the UK, had successfully applied for a corporate account.

Chief executive of Whitbread, Alan Parker, said Premier Inn was experiencing “significant growth in corporate account usage" suggesting that business customers are “reigning in on corporate travel expenditure".

Parker added: “The smart business traveller is opting for a high-quality hotel room at a much lower price."
