Looking ahead: Is forestry the future in Red Rock?

The hope is that a new image of the city as a tourist destination rather than an industrial town will create some new employment. These new businesses are essential since it will be at least six months to a year before the mill is even ready to start production.

"We'd certainly like to see the new mill running," says Richard Harvey, the mayor of neighbouring Nipigon, which is getting ready to start on a $4.6 million downtown revitalization plan. "But people understand now that one mill is not something we can rely on — all it takes is one little spark in the wrong place."

Bigger worries than subprime on horizon

Add to that the continuing carnage in the manufacturing sector and a worrying picture starts to emerge.

"It's not as bad in Canada as it is in the U.S. but the key thing we will be watching for is credit deterioration," said an analyst who asked not to be named. "The Canadian consumer has so far held up because employment is still strong but as soon as you see that start to weaken, that becomes a concern."

But the bank's business side is beginning to show signs of stress, as corporate clients respond to challenges in the economy by paying down debt and cranking back on their borrowing.

"It's the business metrics that are showing signs of tightening," he said. "The story up to now has been challenging credit markets, but now you're seeing more signs of strain in the banks' core businesses. more

Russia: GAZ Group starts building Chrysler-based Volga Siber

"Today we have launched a project which will open up a new phase in Russia's car manufacturing industry," said Sergey Zanozin, GAZ Group's chairman, who also spoke at the ceremony.

"The GAZ Group has started to produce a new line of cars under the Volga brand on platforms from the world's leading manufacturers. The new production complex has the flexible capacity needed to bring new models into production at minimal cost and investment in the future," Zanozin added.The Siber has been under development for two years and is a modified version of the former US-built Chrysler Cirrus. That model was replaced by the Sebring/Cirrus sedan (US & Canada/Mexico) for North America's 2007 model year.The then DaimlerChrysler shipped the production line to Russia, having sold it to GAZ in April 2006. more
