Syngenta Crop Protection posts sales growth The Business Journal

The seeds portion of the business had 15 percent first-half growth to $1.74 billion. Overall results at Syngenta for the first half of 2008 saw sales up 20 percent to $7.3 billion.

Earnings per share for Syngenta as a whole totaled $15.93 per share, up 28 percent from last year.

Plan loosens red tape for businesses

Among other things, the changes will mean savings in time and costs with some applications to set up a business, where one existed previously.

And applications for a material change of use will no longer be required where, for example, an existing warehouse operator wants to add a manufacturing section without increasing the size of the building.

Councillor Lew Brennan, also chair of economic development and council entrepreneurship, said the amendments represented a “significant step towards easing the restrictions on business, while still respecting the values of the original planning scheme".

“Commonplace uses for a town or village centre, such as commercial offices, medical centres, shops and cafes, will now become self-assessable where they are established in an existing building already approved for any one of those uses," Mr Brennan said. more

Mr. Cunningham's next challenge is to ensure that FedEx makes a smooth transition from its long-established regional hub in Subic Bay, the Philippines, to a hub in Guangzhou in southern China's industrial Guangdong province.

Mr. Cunningham, 46 years old, joined FedEx in 1982 and has been based in Hong Kong since 1999. He has a master's degree in marketing and a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Memphis.

He shared his views on management in a telephone interview with Bruce Stanley in Hong Kong, speaking from FedEx's regional headquarters there. more
