Natural allies of Keno? Nope

CLEVELAND -- Ohio's traditional gambling opponents decided to sit out the state lottery's only formal hearing on its controversial Keno game yesterday, leaving only naysayers who aren't morally opposed to Keno or other gambling.

Far from being anti-gambling moralists, the five people who spoke out against Gov. Ted Strickland's plan to launch the fast-playing Keno game this summer were entrepreneurs who had profited from the largely unregulated "skill game" craze that ended last year.

Unlike the so-called games of skill, Keno depends completely on player luck. Like those games, however, Keno is played primarily in bars and at a faster pace than traditional lottery games.

Strickland snuffed out thousands of cash-paying arcade games such as Tic Tac Fruit and Puzzlebug last October, saying they too closely resemble slot machines that voters last rejected in 2006. more

Vijaya Bank on track with business target

MANGALORE: Vijaya Bank is on track to meet its expected business target of Rs. 100,000 crore by 2010 and may end up achieving it a year earlier, according to Chairman and Managing Director, Prakash P. Mallya. The bank as on Friday had achieved a total business of Rs. 78,600 crores, Mr. Mallya said and added, "It is my gut feeling that the bank will breach the Rs. 100,000 crore business target by March 2009."

Addressing media persons after inaugurating the bank's 1,047th branch at Bajpe, near here, on Saturday, Mr. Mallya said he was quite satisfied with the growth achieved by the bank. Bank's deposits have shown an increase of 25 per cent and advances 26 per cent. The bank started its deposit mobilisation drive early in December and this has yielded results.

"We will open our 1,051st branch at Sunkadakatte in Bangalore on Monday," he said. more

Dear Abby: Rude servers bad for business

Dear Abby: You printed a letter from a woman who said her pet peeve was that when she and her friends went to restaurants, they were addressed as "you guys" by the servers.

What really frosts me is the way some waiters address only my husband. They greet only him when we arrive and thank only him when we leave. Apparently, I am invisible.

Dear Lorraine: The servers you describe must be using an outdated etiquette book.

Their behavior harkens back to the days when males were presumed to be sole providers, expected to pay the tab, and often placed the food order for their companions so the fragile little things wouldn't have to bother speaking to the person taking the order.

Because you rightly feel that you have been treated rudely, have a word with the manager of the restaurant and explain that you won't be eating there again, because you were not made to feel welcome. more
