Business community: Xenophobia damages image of S. Africa

The xenophobic violence gripping the country was damaging the image of South Africa, Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) president Brian Molefe said on Thursday.

"The violence must be contained from spreading," he said.

BUSA representatives were in Alexandra, Johannesburg, to pledge solidarity to displaced foreign nationals and look into measures in which business could intervene in their plight.

Molefe said as a short term measure the business community would offer blankets to the Gauteng Provincial Disaster Crisis Center and in the long term they would engage government in matters pertaining to unemployment, housing and crime.

He said businesses ignoring labor and immigration laws in employing foreigners must be reported.

Bobby Godsell, Chairman of BUSA, said it was not true that the mining industry was hiring foreigners at the expense of South Africans. more

My new favorite show: Locked Up Abroad

Using first-hand interviews, each story unfolds as the protagonist chronicles a series of bad decisions and rationalizations that led to their eventual arrest. What starts in many cases as a free all-expenses-paid holiday, a chance for "adventure" and an opportunity to make a quick buck quickly turns into an all-too-real nightmare. They describe endless days waiting in isolated holding cells, confusing foreign justice systems and getting caught in the crossfire of deadly prison gang wars. Interestingly enough, not all episodes involve prison - in one of my favorite episodes so far, an American sets out on a motorcycle trip across South America, only to be kidnapped at gunpoint by guerillas in Colombia. Not only does he manage to eventually escape, he also refuses to be sent back to the U.S. more

Global Energy Advisory Explain Why Energy Risks Are Uncertain But

I believe as an energy trading industry we need to be innovative in managing this specialised credit risk with an effective energy strategy. But Just What Are The Tools For Trading Companies to Manage Their Energy Credit Risk? The main problem with the current arrangements within the energy industry is that they are relatively static and inflexible. Traditional funding availability is not linked to commodity price increases and volatility. In simple terms when the oil price doubles, a company’s financing facilities don’t automatically increase, which means that when credit or cash lines are full, energy traders stop trading with each other. This is not ideal as it prevents highly skilled personnel getting on with the very important task of hedging and ensuring company profitability.Currently energy traders will post cash or provide a Letter of Credit (LC) to cover an energy credit risk. more

Resolved Question: What major would be best for me?

Hi all, I am a senior in high school and next year I will be attending college. I am uncertain of what major would fit me the best. Since I do not fully know about each one, I figured I could possibly get some help on here on which might suit me better. I will at least go to college for 4 years, possibly 6. What I want more than anything is a job paying over 100k a year in Manhattan where I work in a building-office type setting wearing a suit everyday. My main interests are computers and business. I find myself to be very good and fast with numbers, but when it comes to really in-depth math and science, I am not so good. I have been recently working on my communication skills and plan to improve them through college. Two majors I have been looking into are finance and computer science. Like I said before, I do not know everything about either so I would like to hear what you think would be the best for me. more

Resolved Question: No longer disbanding, but parting ways with founding mentors. What to say & do?

A bit long but please bear with me, it boils down to 3 simple questions in the end. A fuller view of my situation can be found here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Agr.tSvKC970Y4TWpGoxDjzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100302165531AASyBjL Our theatre company started in late 2008 and has dwindled down since mid last year. The main problem was that we were mostly 19-year-old-know-nothing-college-students recruited by a set of wannabe pastors who wanted a lot of hype, and I ended up responsible for this organization I never really wanted to join. However, we managed to agree on some mutual values and envision what this organization stands for (i.e. to pool together young aspiring artists in a fun and creative environment which emphasizes a character of integrity, commitment, and competence; so that one day they grow up to become influential professionals who endorse the right values in society), and because of that, for most of this org's existence I've been leading it passionately as president. I'm an inexperienced 24 year old (was 23 then) who took performing arts major in my fifth attempt at college because I wasn't in a position to have a go at in high school; but I know I'm never ever going to be a professional performer. I mostly relied on my conceptualizing, leadership, and communication skills in directing this org. People tend to trust me to lead things because I'm charismatic, intelligent, confident, care deeply about the world around me and am willing to take risks to make it a better place. Nevertheless, I had very little influence in creating a proper understanding in the minds of my teammembers of what this org stands for (despite having written organizational charts and hours of visioneering meetings with subdivision leaders), and very little authority to excercise work ethics and discipline. I delivered very little and it's eating up my self confidence. Now this founding couple we're leaving is a businesswoman who sells apartments near my campus and her husband pastors a wannabe church. No performing arts experience! They always talk about these big fluffy dreams the average person has no chance of attaining, claiming that with God everything is possible and that faith is all about believing that God gives you the power to attain things bigger than you as long as you put Him first. They take credit for helping us magnify our capacities, become independent and accountable. However, in hindsight, I honestly believe that they're cheapos preying on eager, naive students who would work for free in order to expand their business and ministry, which they have trouble differentiating one from the other. If their main concern was really the morality and carnality of the young generation, then they would invest a lot of time in helping us properly building our foundations: long term vision, day to day mission and objectives, concrete definition of core values, and basic skills like financial management and healthy boundaries. But instead of these, they're scheduling hype: battles of bands, singles' night out, hip hop dances with fireworks--which they keep recruiting new people for and have no idea how to follow up. And they expect me to MC these shows and send a team of my kids to support them. I feel so cheated. Since this couple isn't communicating--well, they talk to me while working on a laptop, or have other friends around when I want to get to the nitty gritty over lunch--I've concluded that the issue is not them being an imperfect leader, but rather their lack of good character and trustworthiness. Due to my lack of authority without the endorsement of a senior couple, I have seriously considered disbanding because we simply can't exist without one, and I have more important things to do. However, this does not reflect my commitment to the vision, as this very same vision always recurs in my life no matter what I do. At the last minute, the five members remaining onboard insisted that we carry out without the pastor wannabes and part with them on good terms. Our next step is discussing our team's purpose, envisioning the kind of cultural movement we plan to initiate, translating those in terms of daily activities and attainable achievements, and networking to find a new senior couple to replace the one we're leaving. This new couple must be a couple who cares about, prays for, and are actively taking action to reestablish righteous moral values, accountability, community life, pride in tradition, loyalty and dedication, and true artisanship in the lives of young aspiring artists. They should have experience as a performing artist themselves, and preferrably pastor a real church (not a wannabe one!) or are involved in some type of discipleship ministry, but know how to implement the principles in a secular context. (We're NOT a Christian org, but most people in our Southeast Asian society believe in God and practice a religion.)1. How do I say a final goodbye to our first mentor couple and leave them no room to "give us another chance"? I just want to thank them for the initiative but make it clear that we can no longer work together, and hope that this doesn't affect our friendship. What if I can't reach them in person? 2. How do I step down from leadership A.S.A.P? Nobody else in the current team is ready to takeover, and I am underequipped to bring this team's vision to fruition. I'm getting married, and have other obligations like finding a real job so I can support myself. However, I want this org to make it and feel responsible for laying down the foundations leaving it to a deserving leader. 3. What needs to be in the organization chart, and how to make a volunteer organization actually buy into this? Who should, and how are rules to be enforced while we have no senior couple in the meantime to mentor us and edify the president's authority? Thoughtful solutions appreciated! Thank you for reading :) more

Resolved Question: Would this company hire me?

This is a cover letter for an application to Business Development Bank of Canada. I'm currently a student looking for a summer job. Let me know if I should change anything... or add... etc. I am applying for a position at Business Development Bank of Canada. It would be an excellent opportunity for me to have a chance to work for your company. I am a student currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program; with the knowledge I am learning, I could relate that knowledge back to the BDC. Engrained in the Bachelor program, there are group term projects, which are essential to a business education. I will have gained interpersonal communication skills and be able to work efficiently to get any appointed task completed. I enjoy working in group projects because it’s a great way to meet new people. It is also an effective way of accomplishing work. I can gain knowledge from colleagues while contributing some of my own input. I have 5 years experience in customer retail/service and enjoy working with people. In addition to my strong background in customer service skills, I have the ability to learn new skills quickly. I am sure my training will prove particularly useful for whatever area I am assigned to. I feel that by adding me to your staff I will provide kindness and dependability that your customers will come to know and trust. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you in an interview. You can reach me on my cell phone at __________ and if I am unavailable you can call my home number, _________. I look forward to your call. Thank you for your time and consideration. Resolved Question: Alternative career options for someone interested in law?

I have a very philosophical mind with a keen eye for detail and a sense for logic. In an ideal world I would major in Philosophy and dive into law school. However, lawyers are now a dime a dozen and there is no sense in racking up debt in law school if it's going to take 3 years to find employment. Others have suggested the business route (MBA) but that seems to be quite a generic degree as well with everybody and their mama flocking to it. I am considering an MPA degree but would like to know of other options, opinions, suggestions? Writing and communication are strengths as are memorization, social etiquette, general people skills and the like. more

Resolved Question: Mashup education, experience, and skills at 24. What should I do if establishing a school is my eventual goal?

In college I have studied business management, European politics, advertising, philosophy (four of these one year each), and performing arts communication (am in junior year, will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in communication next year). I failed my first four attempts at college not because of laziness or Iack of commitment; but because I made some ignorant choices in my personal lives that required a lot of cleanup, wrecked my relationship with my family, and compromised my mental health. In between I took a year off to take care of myself and make amends at home, got back into college, and gradually pursue the dream again. The dream has been in my heart practically all my life: I want to set up the first performing arts high school in my country that provides hard working, talented teenagers the opportunity to test the waters of professional showmanship within the safety of a responsible educational institute before they'll have to make up their minds if this is what they want to pursue in tertiary education (e.g. conservatoires or performing arts college) or for life. At some point in my life, I want this dream to actually come true, but I don't know yet where to start. I'm 24 and have been in college since 16 after accelerating two grades in high school, so my first go at university was a rushed decision. However, I always knew that I would want to own my own business one day (i.e. the school) and that I will need to know how to raise capital, sell the product (school programs), lead people, and sustain a long living organisation. Out of my five studies, the one that has the biggest impact on me was probably advertising, which helped me understand how brand development, corporate culture, corporate identity, publicity and image work as part of a company's marketing strategy. I did well in advertising but had to leave to take care of my personal issues. Initially I chose it was because I was too chicken to audition for music school (I had stopped playing music for about 3 years then, I'd probably flunk anyway), but it's creative and based on the business principles I have encountered in a previous study. My current study, PA, has been the most stable, but the program sucks. The campus is originally a PR school that happens to be attended by a number of local celebrities; so they made a communication program tailor made for students intending to pursue a career in showbiz. We ended up getting raw public relations material with odd classes like anthropology, law, and telecommunication technology, with two supplementary art classes per semester. I don't mind the academic subjects, but am alarmed at the lack of theory basis, technique drilling, and emphasis of dedicated showmanship in these classes. We don't even get to choose what kind of performing arts we intend to specialise in, we just get some singing classes and some acting classes but they're basically just throwing the baby in the bath water. So I can sing a bit, act a bit, dance a bit, write scripts, direct, and produce a production satisfactorily, but I can do none of these at a professional level. The reason why I didn't take education major was because I'm not interested in being a classroom teacher. My goal is to raise the capital to start this school, establish a particular brand of education with a distinctive corporate culture, and lead and train the decision makers to run the business responsibly. However, considering that I will need to know the principles of setting up curricula and methods of approaching students to bring out the best of them, I am willing to consider pursuing a master's degree in education. When it comes to work experience, I have had many jobs but not been able to keep them. My longest job was selling skin care products and recruiting people for an MLM company; I lasted 2 years but can't call that a career. Other than that I have worked mostly doing on and off translation projects, and briefly worked in a clothing shop and as an MC for concerts and corporate events. Now that my musical skills have died, my remaining best gifts remaining would be languages (I'm trilingual), public speaking, fusion cooking, leadership, strategizing, and writing... but I have no formal training in any of these and (except for languages and writing) have barely used them in professional settings. I've considered to start working in TV broadcast or an advertising consultancy... they can always use some creative entertainment and I need to make money anyway, but so far my attempts to get into the industry have not been successful. Furthermore, at this point I just can't see it yet drawing me closer to my later goal of founding a performing arts school. I just don't want to make another bad decision I'd regret later in life. A prospective employer once told me that I know what I want, but currently do not have what it takes to get what I want. He's right, but my life has only just begun and I can do somethI can do something to change that if I could just map out where I want to go, learn, work, and consistently dedicate myself to it. I don't believe that my dream is impossible, but it will require breaking down into realistic baby steps I can rationally work on now, and constantly following up and revising strategies to get there. What I'm wondering is... how do people get into the education business? What did successful private school founders do when they were young? What kind of people did they hang around, and what kind of books did they read? Why did they have a passion for setting up this school? With the kind of education, work experience, and skills I have, what are some valuable things I can use to get closer to the dream? What kind of skills, experience, and further education will I have to pursue? And since I more

Resolved Question: I'm changing majors. How hard is it to find a job after graduation with a BA in Communications? Or business?

I was pursuing a BSN (Bachelor's of Science in Nursing), mainly because I know that we are in a bad economy and nursing is a high-demand, "secure" job with good pay. However, from volunteering in the ER, I have discovered that I do not necessarily like nursing. All of my jobs have been communications related--I have been a Fragrance Vendor, a Coordinator for an AmeriCorps program, worked in an office, and in retail. I do not want to do retail for the rest of my life. I am worried that I am making the wrong decision. I do not want a degree that will not get me a job within 6 months of graduation. I do not want to be like some people, who earn a college degree and then do not use it. I would like to know if any high-demand, "secure" jobs exist with a BA in Communications. And how hard it is to get a job with just a BA in Communications. Or, I would appreciate feedback on other jobs that are in-demand and "secure" that would fit my skill set. I am good with communication, written and oral, office work, and details, but bad at math, okay/poor at science, and do not necessarily like to work with my hands. Please help! I am at a confunded juncture in my college career right now. :o more

Resolved Question: I have a problem with choosing my electives...?

Anyone have any ideas? I've been trying to decide which elective I should choose for next year...but I have no idea what to choose. Do you have any idea what elective would benefit me more in the future? There is : *American Sign Language (Full Year) – Explore basic communication with ASL. *Word For Business (1/2 year) – Learn Mastery in Microsoft Office, learn Microsoft Word at a professional level. *Career and money management – Learn to make/manage money. Explore career opportunities, ways to climb the “corporate ladder”, how to own your own business, develop a career plan, learn how to write a resume, practice interviewing skills, exploring life as a consumer *Introduction to science research ********* To graduate, I need to choose either Art or Music. If I want to do both, I won’t be able to to choose the electives stated above. *Studio Art (Full Year) -Pros : I love art, and last year I had a 100 average for my art class. It will bring my GPA up. -Cons: The thing is, I don't really think art is going to help me in my future career. It might be a waste of time if want to explore different careers. *Music (Full Year) Pros: I like playing in the school orchestra. Every day, I get better and better at playing the viola. If I don’t choose music, they will not lend me the viola in the school for free like they have been for the past couple of years. Therefore, I will have to quit playing the instrument Cons: The Career path I want to take has nothing to do with music -----Sorry it's so long...but I would really appreciate it if someone answered, this decision is very difficult for me. :) more

Voting Question: Should Arts & Humanities be dropped from schools?

I'm going to be an accountant. Shakespeare, Picasso and George Washington aren't going to contribute to my paycheck, so why waste all this valuable time on such nonsense? And really art and literature serve no practical value in the real business world. We should stick to science and mathematics, useful subjects. Maybe some English to improve communications skills. Everything else seems a waste of time. more

Resolved Question: Does teaching really improve English Language or communication skills?

I'm a foreigner, I just graduated with a degree in Chemistry. I didn't enjoy advance chemistry so I decided to switch into business management in grad school. However, almost all administrative jobs require fluent in english language and strong communication skills. Despite the requirement, I really want to build a strong communication skills and able to speak english fluently without error, so I'm deciding to go for a teaching job (most likely High School Chemistry) for 3yrs with the hope that the teaching will polish my grammar and my communication skills. Although many complain about the low pay of teaching and its stressfulness, my strongest desire is about getting fluent in the english language. Whatever advice/suggestion you give will be appreciated Thanks!. more

Resolved Question: Can you correct my writing assignment?

Can you correct my writing assignment? Please feel free to add or delete words. Thanks in advance! I enrolled in this class so I can improve my language business skills. Communication is the key in succeeding in any type of business. My communication skills are not the best, so that is why I am here to improve my skills. My enrollment in this particular class is also important as it is something which is a requirement for my major. I chose Business Management as my major because I enjoy learning about tourism and lodging. Basically, everything involves business. For example, marketing, human resources and so many other fields play a role in business. Business Management consists of working with different levels of co-workers. Also, a business person provides services to their consumers. In my spare time, I like to browse different internet sites based on airlines and the hotel industry. In the past, I have had the opportunity to work in the airline business. I enjoyed it so much that I want to continue in this field. In conclusion, one day I want to provide charter flights for international clients. more

Resolved Question: I think im on the wrong college course and i beleve its ruining/ruined my life. how can i fix my situation?

Im 19 years old and I believe I should be in university right now but I am still on a college course due to listing to other people rather than following my interests, okay, in a nutshell, I did a business course at 16 cause I was told I could not do a computing one, (Im excellent with computers) well, that was a waste of time, I ended up hating the course and bunking, the next year at 17/18 I took a Level 2 NVQ course in computing and I enjoyed it so much, I was completing the work before everyone and top of my class, I passed it with ease but the only thing that I failed in was maths, I left with a level 2 in maths as I fail to understand even the most simple of math for long periods of time, anyways, ive now, stated a course BTEC course in computing at level 2 (presently 19 years of age) ONLY FOR THE BENIFIT OF OBTAINING A LEVEL 2 MATHS KEYSKILLS QUALIFICATION! I was told to do this, im now on the course and hate it because im doing almost the exact SAME work as the NVQ only this time, im behind cause ive been focusing on my maths, My question is, could I have done the Key skills level 2 in maths separately to go onto a level 3 course in computing or a 19+ Access course? Ill list my qualifications below: NVQ in IT Level 2 (BTEC IT Level 2 Equivalent) Communications Level 2 (English A - C GCSE Equivalent) Numeracy Level 1 (Maths D - G GCSE Equivalent) Sorry for any spelling mistakes, im sure there are many, but im in class typing without even seeing the screen as im in class the window is in the lower corner, and I feel silly in class as im in class with a bunch of immature 16 year olds.... Am I too late to get my progress back on track, I wont go uni if I apply to late, I don’t want to be in college at 20 21 either, (I turn 20 this year) SORRY IF IVE WRITTEN TOO MUCH, IVE LEFT OUT SOME INFO AS IT WILL TAKE TO LONG TO EXPLAIN IT ALL AND IM IN CLASS ATM. more

I need to find a couple of good articles from reputable journals or publications about why good communication skills are important in business. Resolved Question: TNA vs WWE Monday night wars e-fed- TNA Impact! Week 2 card: Vote?

TNA Impact week 2- The Monday night wars e-fed Match card vote!!! We see an interesting video package of Mick Foley walking on the streets and looking rather poor. Out comes Eric Bischoff who says that he has created a video like that, but he wasted his time. He could have just got it on video tomorrow. That is right as now there is a loser leaves TNA match between Mick Foley and Samoa Joe. Out comes Abyss and says that it is unfair if there is nothing on the line for Foley. Bischoff asks him who he is. He goes to say but Dr. Stevie says “a monster, with no way of helping, and no communication skills, no conscious, and while my absence from TV, I have given him cytology lessons, to give him a flash of the real world.” Bischoff says what exactly you are talking about. Then Abyss says to earn everything, including respect then Black hole slams him. Then Ric flair walks out and says that tonight there will be a four way match for the honour to be the fourth match in the TNA World title match, and it will be: Sting vs Abyss vs Rhino vs Desmond Wolfe. Backstage we see the newly formed X Division section of the locker room, were everyone is in Chris Sabin locker room were he is getting a truce against rob terry “he Is not an x division competitor, he is fat and doesn’t deserve that briefcase, so lets challenge him for it in a steel asylum match”. Match 2- replacement for number one contender match scheduled- Angelina Love vs Roxxi with ODB at ringside Backstage we see Foley with JB and he says that he has had an idea, if he wins tonight’s main event he gets the feast or fired case. In walks Nash who says then if he wins there match at genesis will be for the briefcase. Foley says what is up with his briefcase. He says what briefcase. Backstage we see a beatdown of TBI by waltman and Hall who throw them into the steel Asylum and say they are going to make history by using there F/F case to have the 1st ever asylum tag match: Match 3 (tag titles)- The British Invasion vs Hall and waltman Match 4- Tomko vs Eric Young In a non title match Out comes Bobby Lashley who says that either Krystal gets a title shot or I leave, Out comes Jeff Jarret who says that lashley moans too much, but she can, an X Division title match: Match 4- Amazing Red vs Krystal Lashley in a title match Then Lashley gets on the mic and tells AJ Styles to get out here but out comes Kurt Angle, Lashley says he is no good for my world title shot, angle asks what title shot, he replies the world title shot I earned in the TCS kennedy low blows angle and the 2 beat down on him, AJ Makes the save but after a while Lashley hits a chokeslam and throws him in the ring says he is going to envoke his TNA TCS win but sting hits a scorpion death drop. Match 5- Brother Devon vs Macho man randy savage vs Raven vs Hardcore in a four way match We see Dixie, Shane, JJ, Eric and Hulk in a backstage party when in walks Jimmy Hart, it all goes silent then he joins the party Ric Flair comes to the ring and says he knows what works in this business and he knows about our rivals the WWE.
