Local woman named 2008 American Business Woman of the Year

Sara Franing of Carlisle was recently named the 2008 American Business Woman of the Year by the local Yellow Breeches Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.Franing is actively involved and dedicated to many sectors of the community, including Project SHARE, Habitat for Humanity, the Bosler Memorial Library and patron supporter of arts. Placentia-Linda Hospital nurses attempt to unionize

Placentia-Linda nurses, which previously attempted to form a union in 2003, said hospital management won't address issues such as unsafe staffing levels and assigning patients without considering the level of care they need.

"These nurses did their best to cooperate with management to improve Placentia-Linda, and management did not reciprocate," said Kathy Sackman, president of UNAC/UHCP. "With the significant nursing shortage across the country, hospital management must do what it can to retain and recruit nurses."

The union said a "strong majority" of Placentia-Linda nurses have signed authorization cards for a union election. The NLRB has not yet set a date for the election.

Officials at Dallas-based Tenet (NYSE: THC) were not immediately available to comment. more

Attacks mark a ‘shameful episode’ in SA history

Business leaders have condemned the spate of xenophobic attacks that have claimed more than 50 lives since the hate crimes began in Johannesburg two weeks ago.

At the weekend, the police and the army began raiding hostels at which many of the attacks are believed to have been planned.

A high-powered delegation of business leaders, which included Transnet chief executive Maria Ramos, SA Property Owners’ Association chief executive Neil Gopal, and Business Unity heavyweights Bobby Godsell and Jerry Vilakazi, met last week to assess the security situation in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

“The property industry and the business community as a whole condemn the violence unfolding in South Africa,” said Gopal. more
