Intevac swings to Q2 loss Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal

Intevac Inc. on Monday reported a net loss of $937,000, or 4 cents a share, for the second quarter.

Santa Clara-based Intevac (NASDAQ:IVAC), which said the loss included $1.6 million of equity-based compensation expense, had net income of $11.6 million, or 52 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

Revenues totaled $32.1 million compared to $72.1 million in the year-ago quarter. The equipment and imaging manufacturer said operating expenses for the quarter totaled $15.8 million, or nearly 50 percent of revenues, compared to $17.5 million, or 24 percent of revenues, in the second quarter of 2007. The decline in expense dollars was a result of lower research and development expenditures and legal costs as well as overall cost-reduction initiatives.

By closing Monday, Intevac shares were down 63 cents, or nearly 6 percent, to $10.27. more

Parent of SA Spurs ready to rock ‘n’ roll

Rick Pych, president of business operations for SS&E, says the parent company of the four-time NBA champion Spurs is evolving, and its reorganized management team is looking to bring more sports and more entertainment to San Antonio and South Texas.

On July 15, Spurs Chairman Peter Holt announced that Pych had been named president of business operations for SS&E. The shuffling of the executive ranks did not end there. Head coach Gregg Popovich is now pulling double duty as president of Spurs basketball. And Spurs general manager R.C. Buford has added president of sports franchises to his responsibilities.

Pych says one of the goals moving forward is to establish the AT&T Center/Freeman Coliseum complex — including the surrounding grounds — as a true year-round entertainment destination. more

UnitedHealthcare to pay $800k in North Carolina settlement The

North Carolina also will participate in reviews of United Health's business that are required under the multistate deal.

It's the second time that United Health has reached a monetary settlement with the state in the past five years. In 2004, the company agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle what the state claimed were "systematic problems" with its claims processing, Pearson says.

UnitedHealthcare does not admit any violations of Insurance Department policy or state law under terms of the most recent settlement. Its fine, as required by North Carolina law, will be distributed to the state's public schools.

"Today's agreement provides a meaningful way to assess how we measure up to the high standards of service that people in North Carolina expect," the company said in a statement. more

Rockwood Holdings to Acquire Nalco Surface Treatment Business

Nalco's Finishing Technologies business provides chemicals and services for pre-treating of metal and will become part of Rockwood's Chemetall Americas surface treatment business, once the acquisition is completed. Included in the transaction is Nalco's Finishing Technologies plant in Jackson, Michigan. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the third quarter.

Commenting on the transaction, Seifi Ghasemi, Rockwood's Chairman and CEO, "This acquisition is an important addition to Chemetall's surface treatment business and a key part of Rockwood's overall strategy to grow through bolt-on acquisitions. It increases our expanding surface treatment business in North America, and it significantly increases Chemetall's ability to serve the metalworking industry."

Voting Question: how stupid does this solution to fixing the recession sound?

Someone I know, who is basically one of those people that think he alone knows how the world works and no one else, brags that he came up with the solution to the economic woes. here is his blog: "So I had the great idea, of what I believe is something that could help the free market and the American People, and maybe the government opposed to trying to tame or "fix it," like the government apparently thinks it can. If you're unaware, the company currently in the midst of all this-major banking/government bullshit-problems has been AIG {American International Group]. Hardly American to me. AIG is is a lot of heat because they quote "lost 63 Billion dollars." Yeah, just lost it. Um? [crickets]. That is your tax money, ladies and gentlemen. How do they loose 63 Billion Dollars? That is ridiculous! They got that money about a month, maybe a month and a half ago and thats like 2 Billion Dollars a DAY! HOLY SHIT! If not more. My epiphany was this. Why not give the 300+ million People in America, each one million dollars if they are of the age of 18 and up. Just give them the money. This is less then 1/8th the amount given to a PRIVATE CORPORATION. The idea would be to stimulate the free market as the people are the ones participating in the majority of commerce. [Note: I do not believe any of the great empires have done this before, but I could be wrong, but it could be a first] The bill, the "Pumping System Bill" would be inactive for 3-years in 2-year sets. It would be like a jolt to the Economy [if you need some imagery] So for the first 3 years, everyone who is 18 and up would receive 1 million dollars. They would only be allowed one million dollars. No more no less. [Group Epiphany: Seniors would have their own means of Social Security. Young people could get out of Social Security, and the Medicare Systems People would have money for Health Insurance. By this many this would help to elevate the Medical Complex. People would be getting themselves out of Credit Card Debt. A Utopia would be created within a Democracy. Go figure] Also a rule would have to go into effect [thanks Deven] that the price of all products could NOT raise more then 2% of its original price prior to the bill being active. The price could go up as it needs to go up or go down, w/e the case, but just because everyone gets a million dollars doesn't mean that a 25,000.00 car should go up to 100,000.00 Ok. So people are skeptical but look at it this way. Even if 40% of the population had invested their money in banks, that would help to re-establish that system. Plus it would benefit everybody. If nobody is to invest their money it will stimulate the economy as people are going to be buying products, houses, getting themselves out of debt, etc. [If nobody invest then that is 300 million dollars being placed in the economy. 300 million being directly injected in, where it matters. The market place] By giving the million dollars out, you have lifted the people out of a slum they had been put in. It might be partially a "socialist plan," but I think this is a great idea that should be challenged and looked into. Investigated and researched upon. And nobody REALLY becomes any different because the person who made 65,000 per year is now the 1,065,000.00 person and the person who made 80,000 dollars per year is the 1,080,000.00 person. Basically, the rich can not get their nuts in bunches because nobody jumped any classes of "wealth." People would leave their jobs [most likely sick or Senior Citizens], but if they did that would open up and give jobs to whom are looking for work. If not, I am sure many would try opening up businesses, and this would create jobs as well. One problem may be that the infrastructure of the ghettos, projects, and cities would fall apart, as if you have major money why not go live in a better area. The idea of people either affording these areas V the idea of people leaving these areas would probably be up in the air. But to help prevent this, maybe "projects" would be created to help clean up these areas before the millions were dispersed. Once again, they could probably take an 1/8th of that 63 billion and invest in our communities-in-need. Another part of this 63 billion, probably and 1/8th again could go back into the payroll of nurses, officers, teachers, firefighters, and public buildings in need. But a major rule would have to deal with all banks and all the investing firms, companies, etc. They would need to insure the all money that would be invested from this "Pumping System Bill." In their long term funds, bonds, etc all money & interest would need to be insured. Up to every dollar of every person. Hopefully this would help with the bankers stealing from long term funds. [I don't know to much of this area so it would need to be looked into.] Also in the bill we might as well include the idea of creating sound mortgages again.
